Rest in Peace Robbie. Thanks for the memories. Saw you in Phoenix late 80s. Just as wonderful as your dad was. Hope you are now reunited with your dad in Heaven.
Kids today will never know the anticipation of these kind of jumps. Days, if not months of waiting, then if you're even able to see it live. For my generation (49yo) this was a big dang deal.
This was appointment television. Growing up in 70’s….Evel Knievel was the man. I had the toys, I watched the specials. What a time. Rest In Peace, Robbie.
Watching this now and having watched it back then the crazy thing is as he took off I still got goosebumps. As if it was live again and I never saw it. People who weren’t born yet have little idea how anticipated the jumps him and his dad did were. It was a fun time back in those days.
Bravo to Robbie for gettin' it done. I saw his dad in the early 60's at oval sprint car races doing school bus jumps. Evel was legendary - the excitement was intense. Not to take away from Robbie, if his dad had the bike Robbie was on, he also would have got it done. The right tool for the job. Awesome!
Robbie not only avenged Bob’s (Evel’s) crash, but the hardly-mentioned crash of Gary Wells. Robbie actually landed on the safety ramp, recommended by his dad (or in his case, insisting on). It make look like he landed it perfectly......but, Robbie actually landed about 15-20 feet SHORT of the “X” on the landing ramp. The safety ramp literally saved his life. True story.
Yes sir. His Dad Evel Kneival saved his life by insisting on the 15 ft safety ramp. That was what the big embrace and pat on the back from Robbie to Evel was i would have to say. Both men are awesome. Just think what Evel could have done with a bike like that...... Amazing indeed
@@615al4 yeah mate wasn't evel jumping on heavy af triumphs and Harleys?? Think this jump was CR500 Honda and built for jumps so better than his dad had.
I grew up loving Evel Knievel! But I'm just realizing I was probably watching Robbie...lol I'm 44. I definitely had a Evel Knievel toy motorcycle. I was too young to realize it was Robbie's jumps I watched. They both are my heroes!
There is no better moment than Evel talking to his son before the jump while hugging each other. Giving Robbie last minute advice and encouragement. So beautiful ❤️😊🙏 As a father of 25yrs, I can relate to this moment. Much love and respect to the Evel family❤️👍 What an accomplishment between both father and son….❤️
That was so cool!! I love these jumps. Love his outfit! Glad Evel was there. Evel was super competitive and loved attention so he was proud, but I'm sure he was like "dang! I need another shot!" Lol!

no use for a name Hell even a 125 will lift the tire in 1st and 2nd. My 500 wants to flip backwards in 3rd, come up hard in 4th, and hang the tire about a foot of the ground in 5th. This is with me leaning all the way forward on the gas tank.
I had a 85 I could be cruising around 30 in 5 gear on the pavement and crack the throttle and it would stand straight up I weighed 260 pounds and had a buddy that weighed 340 and it would do the same with him they were a beast 85 horse power death trap if not respected
Yea , the Knievel legend lives on. I grew up idolizing his dad. Got the scars to prove it. Later became a huge Capt Robby fan. Got to have a drink with him in Sturgis . The family is American royalty I say. 🤘🇺🇸
I remember watching this live. The build up and anticipation was crazy! You could feel Robbie's anxiety. It was great re-living this! Thanks for posting this. I still have my VHS copy somewhere...
I was a wide eyed 12 year old, spending part of my Christmas school break with my father (my parents were divorced), who was leasing a room by the week, at the legendary Colonial House Motel down the strip from Caesars Palace. I was witness to Evel's attempt the bright winter day in 1967, standing for hours before, front center, on the crescent shaped sliver of grass, that fronts the fountains. Fast forward to 1989, I'm working down the Strip at the legendary Desert Inn Hotel and Country Club, as a casino table games supervisor, whose shift does not begin until 9p. I arrive early, hoping to duplicate my position front and center, and view Robbie Knievel's attempt to successfully jump the Caesars Palace fountains. Unfortunately, They've fenced off the property from the Strip, and have erected view blocking grandstands. It's a friggin' zoo. The best I can do, is to go inside Caesars Palace, and watch on the sports book big screens. It's interesting that he was figuring 85 mph for optimum results, only to hit only 75 mph (unintentional he said), and still have enough length to land it successfully.
His dad was my hero when I was a kid we used to jump trash cans (when they were made of metal) crash, get up pick the rocks out of our foreheads, and do it again LOL
Damn your comment brought back so many memories, some PAINFUL....LOL, but we did the same thing. I remember my buddy saying they were too round, that being the metal garbage cans, so we kind of flattened them a little. Ohhh my Dad was pissed. The bike crash was easier to take. Knievel was our hero.
Wow....That was intense, and that pillar in the middle after the landing which wasn't there back then....It takes huge balls especially knowing the history of the jump. Like father like son. Evil tried it on a Triumph ...heavier bike with no suspension. Incredible.
I was there for that. Robbie was painting a line down the ramp earlier in the day. I walked over and asked him if he was scared and he said yes. He was very nice and i wished him well.
Posters need to stop saying incorrectly that Evel jumped the fountains on a Harley. He used a Triumph Bonneville 650, his bike of choice until the Palace jump made him famous and Harley decided to sponsor him.
@@MrJoeyplatinum yes we did. none of that electronic crap the kids play with now. Toys that brought imagination into our lives. Ahhh yes the good old days. Cheers to those days my friend

Man! A cold Beer never tasted sooo good!!’ Those were the good ole days!
Thats completely insane what evel is doing using basically a heavy street legal bike making these jumps. And knowing ahead of time that its not going to end well but still jumping because people paid is legendary.
A pretty risky jump, it would seem, as the runup to the ramp was obviously not long enough for him to get the speed he felt he needed to reach. He said after the jump he wanted to get to 85 mph and probably only got to 75, and he could barely get the bike to 5th gear in time. In all of his practice runs, he said, he never got beyond 4th gear. And it appeared that he barely made the safety ramp--coming some 20/25 feet short of the ideal landing spot, according to someone below. Also, how about the steel bridge pile that he had to avoid not long after landing. Had he lost control of the bike after landing, he might easily have crashed into that thing--which, though padded, would have caused a very serious injury. But glad he got it done--an achievement. Tough way to make a living! RIP!
He was the only true motorcycle hero at that time....(as far as I know) There are some young bucks out there keeping the sport alive......they have monster stones for sure....but Thank God we all grew up with an idol like Evel , nowadays the kids admire thugs...????
Evel said, If he had the Bikes that they make today, He would of Jumped over the friggn Moon. Remember how Heavy Evel's Bikes were when he jumped those things were Tanks.............
***** Interestingly, the mass doesn't matter, just the drag and the launch speed. IT still accelerates towards the ground at 9.81m/s^2. Yes, there's more force on the heavier bike, but that happens to be offset by the fact that it's heavier and thus harder to get moving in the first place. I suspect that Evel probably had a little more room for his launch, and thus, with the same power to weight as Robbie (He probably didn't have as much power, so his power to weight was worse), he'd have a better chance of clearing the gap. Of course, Robbies suspension and tyres are probably what made the difference.
+Grizzly Boxing BIG BEAR the Bonneville triumph was just over 650 ibs. dry. my pops had two. the shocks were ridicules for anything other than a relatively smooth ride, for say, no more that 2 hundred miles, tops, then you were sore because of the stiffness. they were road shocks, considered enough for the last of the "thumper" bikes. he was crazy for trying to jump those old dinosaurs.
He shorted the jump just like his dad but the suspension saved him. The rear suspension compressed and didn't rebound him off the bike like the Triumph did.
+spectacular cycle jumps: hope you remember our last conversations about the Michigan crash? ok, more info for you. Evel was certifiably crazy on that shock fact alone.
Yes, in fact Robbie was planning on his trademark no hands move but as he cleared the ramp; as he said 'He was short', he thought he was in for a bad tumble.
When I was a kid in the seventies Evel Knievel was a god got to see him jump at the Cow Palace then I got to see his son Robbie jump in the old Orange Bowl in Miami in the 80s during a monster truck show I think it was billed as the longest jump with no hands

There’s so many *DIRECT* comparisons between Robbie & his dad…I’m a retired professional Motocross/Supercross racer… let me put it this way, Evel Knievel used to Jump Harley-Davidson XR-750’s (4-Stroke, Air Cooled, 750cc, It had 3-to-5 inches of Suspension Travel) where-as Robbie is riding a Honda CR500 Motocross Bike (2-Stroke, Liquid Cooled, 500cc, Single Rear-Shock, Center link. Robbie’s CR500 has Upside-Down Forks) now, because Evel Knievel’s XR750 had conventional forks & Dual Rear shocks…and because of that, even though Robbie’s bike has like a 10” advantage in travel… Evel’s bike would have WAY WORSE suspension rebound because the Bounce-Back effect would be so much more
When I was growing up in the 70's, I remember 2 memorable figures that were always in the headlines. Elvis Presley and Evel knievel. Every kid wanted to be Evel knievel, building ramps in the street jumping over their mates on Raleigh Choppers and Grifters. Great memories.✊😎
I remember watching this live. Dave Despain announcing. Robbie riding a Honda CR500. Very powerful bike and it took every bit of what that bike had to make the gap. Nothing like a 2-smoke!
I think they are all great jumps. The problem is, they are all being compared to each other as to which one is better. Reality is they are all different, incomparable. Different bikes, different ramps, just different technology all around. They are great on their own.
The evolution of jumping has improved..what Pastrana did was cool and all. But know where as difficult as Evels jump. If he Had used the same setup as Evel the results might have been different. I’m not hating on it. But way different technology was used. Even Robbie’s jump was more difficult than this. And he used a dirt bike
Shiny Knife yes exactly! Now a computer can simulate every detail. You saw Pastrana cleared those jumps easy! Could have jumped 5 more buses, lol. Yes he must have skills to take off, land, drive it etc. But they know beforehand how to do it and exactly what will work. Evel was guessing, his guys calculated stuff with a notebook. And they showed Evels crash in London, he KNEW he was going to MISS! Didnt have proper equipment! That would never happen today.
Rest in Peace Robbie. Thanks for the memories. Saw you in Phoenix late 80s. Just as wonderful as your dad was. Hope you are now reunited with your dad in Heaven.

Elvis Presley and Evel knievel.
Every kid wanted to be Evel knievel, building ramps in the street jumping over their mates on Raleigh Choppers and Grifters.
Great memories.✊😎
Super dave was there, that's awesome! R.I.P. Robbie, Evel, and Super Dave
Mad good luck luv it.
RIP to legend that became a myth. Turn up the bottles tonight
Honda CR500 baby!
Sweet bike with alot of travel.
Shit can, just like their cars.My fathers Chev pu has over 690000K's.Like to see any Honda even come near that.
I remember watching this live. Dave Despain announcing. Robbie riding a Honda CR500. Very powerful bike and it took every bit of what that bike had to make the gap. Nothing like a 2-smoke!
What year was this? The Cr500 appears to be a '89 or '90 model so I assume it was somewhere around then
Man, that makes me happy in the face. Grand Canyon, though... THAT was close. Blessed be RK
@Leon Wood Robbie is the one who did the Grand Canyon. Not his dad. I saw it.
Still love watching this !
Rest in peace Robbie. We loved you!
RIP Robbie! What a legend
I think they are all great jumps. The problem is, they are all being compared to each other as to which one is better. Reality is they are all different, incomparable. Different bikes, different ramps, just different technology all around. They are great on their own.
Men had balls of brass, courage, big dreams ,and the guts to follow thru with these incredible challenges!!! Who today can run with the bigs dogs?!???
I watched Robbie do a jump back in the mid 2000s at Sault St Marie Michigan, very cool!! 👍👍👌👌
Great jump! The CR 500 was great too! His 1991 CR 500 was sold for $17000 recently!
This was a masterpiece.....a hell of a lot fatther than it might look until you watch it from the angle they shot it at.
WOW.....THATS AMAZING.................WOW..........
Awsome that boy earned his wings!
Montana raised, and all natural giant balls, bro! 👌 👍 ✊
I would LOVE to have the full version of this PPV on a DVD-R, Dan. I would pay you for your time and trouble of making a copy.
That was a great jump. Anybody who thinks this is easy let's see them go try it.
steven simmons Oh it's easy,if you do the math, got the balls, &is crazy enough
Travis Pastrana is going to try July 8th on a Indian 750. should be interesting
Why was landing ramp so narrow? Pastrana just did it with ease but landing ramp is 5x as wide...i dont get it
The evolution of jumping has improved..what Pastrana did was cool and all.
Robbie was my friend I love you man
Father and Son together that's awesome
RIP BUDDY!!!!
that was a fantastic jump and i love the mx bike
