    Best part of this video is seeing the face behind the voice and fingers! I'll let your educated and thoughtful followers cast light on the tools and their current function. Real craftsmen will always be helpful and encouraging, others probably need a "time out" and change of diaper.

    I’m sure you know what all of these tools are now, but for viewers who don’t know, here’s a list of them all :
    3:30 - this is a depthing tool for laying out the location of pivots on a new movement and checking the depthing of wheels.
    5:30 - These are also for watch jewelling. The tiny collets hold a metal jewel setting (chaton) which in turn holds a jewel. The little metal containers might be empty, but held metal settings matched to the size of the corresponding collet. The larger round tool is a clamp, used to hold a collet, which in turn holds a setting. You then use a jeweling press to friction fit a jewel into the setting held in the collet. The thing you call a chuck is the collet that fits the round tool base, the tiny things in the container you called a collet are the jewel settings (chatons) that fit the collet. The manual for the big deluxe Seitz jeweling set contains instructions for this set.
    6:26 - These are all trueing callipers, for trueing wheels (mainly cut bimetallic temperature compensating balance wheels) in the round and the flat.
    7:07 - these are wrenches that are used with the trueing callipers. The notch in the end grips the rim of the balance wheel so you can make alterations to bend it back to being perfectly flat and perfectly round.
    7:23 - this is a mainspring gauge. The slots around the edges are to measure width of the spring, and the slot in the centre is to measure the thickness of the mainspring.
    7:42 - this is for polishing pivots, but a Jacot tool is superior for this purpose. The pegs at the bottom can be secured in a vise, and I think they were also designed for use in a watchmakers WW lathe, but can be driven by a bow too. Never used one.
    8:20 - Hard to say, I couldn’t get a proper look at them. They could be different sizes of female centres for the Levin pivot polishing tool.

  • @wbfaulk
    @wbfaulk 2 года назад +182

    The first tool, the brass one in the red box that you poked yourself on, is a depthing tool. You suspend two wheels between the centers, in the middle, so that they mesh. You then adjust the distance between them so that the meshing is optimal, and then you can use the pointy outside of the centers to scribe that distance on whatever you need to drill into to mount those wheels on.

    I cannot believe some of the mean comments that people are making Marshall. You clearly state in virtually every video you release that you are an amateur and hobbyist learning as you go along. Everyone knows that watchmaking is an incredibly skilled job and I think that you should be admired for your efforts and willingness to learn. My late father was a true watchmaker and I remember sitting mesmerised while he repaired/service watches (I was always told that I had to sit still and quiet when Dad was working). I remember quite a few of those tools, although do not know what they are used for. You purchased a job lot of tools that would obviously have just been thrown away judging by the price you paid for them. As your skill levels improve you shall probably find use for those precision instruments. Good luck to you and thanks for the great and interesting content.

      Not to mention every “watchmaker” coming after him has had a very elitist attitude. I think it’s also worth mentioning that he isn’t a watchmaker as much as he is a watch restorer. While the terms are probably synonymous now, He doesn’t actually make watches, so it stands to reason he wouldn’t know all of the tools of the trade. But I think it’s only a matter of time before he attempts it.

    This is a little late but; The first tool is a gear mesh tool used for making gears, the caliper looking tools are used to check the position and truth of gearwheels on their pivot shafts wile making gearwheels, the two slotted bars are for correcting the truth in a gearwheel so the gearwheel does not woble, the lathe looking machine is just that it is indeed a pivot polisher for making replacement pivot shafts for gearwheels it seems that the driving bow is missing the small box of chucks most likely go with the pivot polisher, the screwdriver looking tools are indeed jewel staking tools, the plate gauge could be used to measure any thing it is hard to tell what without a closer look.

  • @Scrizati
    @Scrizati 4 года назад +386

    The ruler like part is a main spring gauge, the red box is a gear depthing tool for checking gear meshing, the thing you have 3 of are balance truing calipers for checking the balance is flat although at least one is missing the index arm, the final Levin part is a lathe attachment for polishing pivots, the 2 pieces at 7:12 are listed in some places as balance wheel wrenches maybe for use with the calipers?

    The first tool was a depthing tool. You could send it to me if you like. You also have a pivot lathe several truing calipers for balance work the jewel hole open and closing tools that you identified. The more you get into watchmaking the more you will use everything. I was surprised you did not recognize the mainspring gauge. Have fun

    What you call a chuck, at 5:55, is a collet. We do use them on lathes to chuck round stock. Each collet has a different sized hole for holding different sized material. The collets all have the same sized O.D that goes into the chuck or holder. The chuck and the collets are designed to work together. As you tighten up the chuck the collet squeezes down on the material, holding it securely. The one you pulled out looks to be 1.50mm would make sense being Swiss.

    The three calipers look different from one another. i can only begin to describe the last trueing/duplicating caliper (one with machine turning). When one side only is used in conjunction with the adjustable arm a damaged gear (on the staff) is placed in the caliper mount pegs and gradually checked for true gear rotation.
    I believe one of the two "rods" is an adjusting lever. It has slight relief cuts used to lightly bend and adjust the gear into alignment - with slight adjustments and rotating to check gear rotation relationship with the free arm locked in place.
    Eventually, one will see no variation/wobble in gear rotation in relation to the arm locked in place.
    As for the duplicating aspects ??? i don't know...

    The spanner like instruments (3 pieces) are for finding out if the wheels are bent. You put the wheel between the holes in the tip of the spanners and use a blower to make the wheel spin. If the wheel warbles, you will know there if a bend somewhere. By the way, I think you have not opened one box and showed the contents.

    You actually picked up some useful tools there. In today's Ebay bidding environment that lot of goodies would have cost you upward of 500 dollars. It's the current explosion of hobbyists joining the watchmaking community.
    You are so correct that watchmaking tools are very expensive. The deeper you get into the hobby the more tools you find out that you need if you want to be able to work on and fix just about anything.
    One funny Hobbyist watchmaking RUclips content creator has a saying that is quite funny and applicable:
    'How to become a millionaire by doing watch repairs.. Start with a billion dollars'.
