  • Harry Potter and Fantastic Beasts author, JK Rowling explores her family tree in Who Do You Think You Are. She heads to Edinburgh to meet with her Auntie Marian, the last link to the French side of her family. When her mother Anne died, author JK 'Jo' Rowling had only just begun writing her Harry Potter novels. To her daughter's abiding regret, Anne never lived to see the boy wizard become a global phenomenon. Anne was keenly interested in learning more about her roots, but never found the time to explore her French genealogy. This is something her daughter wants to correct. It's the beginning of a personal journey that demolishes a long-treasured family story and reveals three generations of indomitable single mothers.

She knows that he was awarded one of France's most prestigious medals, the Legion d'honneur, for his actions during World War One. Jo wants to find out exactly what he did to win the honour. My mom has MS as well. She was diagnosed 32 years ago when I was 2. I remember reading and falling in love with the first harry potter book the year it was originally published. Only years later did i know that her mom also had MS and wed struggled through some of the same pain.

Less education back then, but wrote cursive beautifully. Kids today don’t know how to write cursive. 🤦🏻‍♀️

It's not like it's an important skill to have anymore. It's like knowing how to read an analog clock or a map, there's no need for it. I love writing in cursive, but I had to teach myself because it isn't taught in school. If you want your children to know how to read and write in cursive, you have to be the one to teach them.

Yes cursive is important. Some of us learn by writing notes and brainstorming by hand. How will they read historic documents that are in cursive?

@@elainagilbert7663 I have to say that I still use an analogue clock several times every day, and that I will sometimes look at paper maps too.
But I never had any use for cursive writing since I never had to use the kind of pen, that has to be dipped in an inkwell.
My teacher in 2nd grade forced it upon my class decades after it went obsolete without explaining what it even was good for.
And it also gave me a grudge towards it, that I can't fully get rid off even today.
When I saw that no other teacher expected me to use cursive writing already in 1995, I decided to not bother with it after that...

@@zellahIt is very much possible to learn how to read old documents without using cursive writing in your modern everyday life.
I mean, some people can read cuniform or hieroglyphs, and yet, it is not like most people have to learn it.

I understand that, but I wasn't saying nobody uses these things. I said they aren't useful skills to have in this day and age. I can't stand when older generations complain about the things kids don't have today without realizing there are reasons for that.@@Furienna

I believe that loved ones are often here to protect us. Some of the greatest earner have a loved one gone bevor their success and I like to think that they were guarded by them to achieve their goals. So having this believe system I am pretty sure her mum knows about her success because she might be the reason of it.

An example of how family members often live with a falsehood all their lives. I know the Legion of Honor gets sorted out later, but you must verify everything when researching your tree.
