this is the second time marketing misrepresents Gillermo's vision, the last time they did this was with Crimson Peak, marketing had it look like it was going to be a horror film but Guillermo always said it was a gothic romance, apparently marketing has no idea what to do with these kind of films and they want to put them in a box they dont really fit in

tbf, marketing has a mandate to ... market, ensure as big of a net is cast to boost sales, if sales go down or are tepid, it's their asses on the line. I'm not justifying their actions, but I can definitely see why it's rational for them to "misrepresent" films if it gets their quotas fulfilled.

The way this movie was marketed is going to cause some dissapointmrnt and that is not the fault of the film or the filmmakers. It was the fault of the marketing team. I was incredibly happy with this movie. Those judging it based on the trailer are doing a disservice to the film. Or judging it based on what kinds of movies Del Torro has done in the past does a disservice to the film.

Guillermo Del Toro is one of the old guard of filmmakers that has one leg in the past and one leg into the future. Especially with his involvement with Death Stranding(video game) and with the elements of slow pacing(tho it does drag on from time to time in this film).

I agree with OJ that Stan beginning to drink was all on the Psychologist. His claim that drinking would mess with his act could be seen as an excuse, but there’s still truth to that. With his over confidence and senses blurred by liquor, he failed to see the warning signs that lead to him being shot. There’s also the idea that while using him, she never intended to backstab him. That is until his words, with her assistance, had lead to the death of the Judge and his wife.

"Unless you really love mysteries and thrillers..." Let me quote Joe here to give this a word or two in that light--that dark light of noir. It means you already know the Tyrone Power classic and how, despite the then obigatory in Hollywood "Happy Ending" never more so tacked on or futile than in the case of Stan's "redemptive" reunion with Molly--it is otherwise known as one of the darkest Hollywood movies ever made. It is, and is based upon a brutal, heavily-freudian infused narrative of an unrelenting reduction of a novel by a brilliant, hard fellow named Gresham.
This movie pleased me about as much as I could have hoped--given the classic, brutal and yet psychologically complex nature of the piece. I like the way Joe gets the punch of that last line--it is the very one Gresham works toward inexorably in just a way as that some may wonder is it too punctual an end. I agree with Joe that the movie works it brilliantly here--and that last line is prevented from being an all time movie classic like "rosebud" only by it being almost too perfectly so. Cooper was important to me there--and once again, just like one American Sniper of an actor--he saved my bacon again. Sold it to me. Again. Really appreciate that.
As the guys pointed out, the cast members are throughout the ranks are all very well chosen. And if Willem Defoe's part is brief it is pointed proof again of all that we rightly love him for being as an actor. The lead women in this are both powerhouses in their own way--the key role of the doctor is particulary well acted and envisioned in the rendition--a third take on her,( novel and movie and now remake) I think--and proof that she is of enduring interest as a new kind of noir-modern character, depth-wise.
For a fan of this material, who, knowing so much of the drama would be interior--deeply psychological and suggestive--this movie never really lagged. I'm generally a harsh critic on the too long moments of even good movies, and without swearing its perfect (like the original film) I can say that this story always tended to move for me to just the right thing--after it had stayed for a little more of the right thing in that overtly slower but truly deeper, dramatic fashion with actors galore to populate those spaces.
I knew going in for this movie to be right, it did not to be brutally "straight." (Not magic or wonder or enchantment but the plainest kind we all purchase) But it being Del Torro, I might have wanted one or two more suggestive bends--the illusion gone topsy-turvy a bit--particularly in the key "ghost appearance" scene, when Molly does wrong against her good soul one more time for Stan. I had always thought that in the old movie, this was the one scene they didn't quite have the effects to pull off, and here is where I might have wished that Del Torro had had them create something more elaborate here, and thus use it as a moment to impress us with directorial restraint by otherwise allowing the moment to blur the line finally, between reality and a possibility of "more" "supernatural" "God" "Providence" etc this piece is known to always frustratingly flirt with but never quite say.
So like life, this way, say some like me who revere this dark material. The man who believes his lies, the grifter who "sells out" in this one cardinal way, is the same damned soul he always was, then. So close to a real rube, a real "mark" as they say--and as that scene where Pete reads the watch foreshadows--. It sets him up to be had. By better, bigger, more viscous at his own game.
So, love this movie. Love Joe and the guys for being cool and take the time to dig it. Their review is probably one to go by if you're a more general audience--which is still pretty rare and pretty good--some "slow" "heavy" and yes--very dark--drama--during this holiday time that othewise does work well enough to offer some potential cinematic "counterpoint" to those seeking something past the popcorn fun (we all revere the most) or usual holiday light drama. I would say I completely agree with this analysis, then,
For fans with more age or experience or both, this movie asserts itself as a credible remake of already great material, touches all of the right themes all of the time, that is also unique enough a work in its own right to cause some quibling or contention about certain of del Torro's generally (for me) insightful choices, certain emphasis of certain angles on certain themes twisting throughout the deliciously simmering cauldron of human desire and fear in the more "modern" world--which is well hot enough for me somewhere before that exquisitely short, unbelabored, third act (where it mattered most).
I just happened to see the movies hours before this, and what can I say but what I say whenever this happens: sorry so long. If anyone reads it all--thanks. Otherwise, yeah--Nightmare Alley--some people do need a little slow-burn dark heat like this can of Sterno here right now, too.

This COULD have been a masterpiece but Toro made the mistake that too many modern directors make -- he fell in love with every frame he shot. So he spent so much time on developing every scene that it too often dragged -- meanwhile, he lost the focus of the story. The love relationship was sudden and undeveloped. The arrangement with the shrink was vague. And his dissent into alcoholism was too abrupt. (The last 10 minutes of the film). Yet the movie was THREE HOURS LONG!!! It literally could have been cut in half. I would have loved to do a rewrite and an edit. It would have been so much better because it's a great story with great performances and the look was magnificent. It just got too caught up in its own cleverness and wound up missing the point of the plot.

I haven't seen anyone mention the psychiatrist's connection with her mother and suicide - When Stan first reads her in front of the crowd, he mentioned her flirtation with suicide as one reason for the gun. The way she says 'I'll live' after being choked was almost disdainful, which made me think that was also potentially part of her plan. That's why she was so disappointed with Stan, because she wanted to bring the geek out of him and flirt with real life or death consequences again - and living was almost a disappointment after that. If everyone is secretly desperate to show the world who they really are - she should be a victim (she hides her abuse and scar and projects a powerful woman) and Stan is a monster hiding behind a facade of ultimate control. Her scheme could have put two truths to the light in one move.

I enjoy you all talking about Spider-Man/Marvel films being a "fast" 2.5 hours because it's the complete opposite for me. I'm usually checked out 10 minutes into the inevitable opening fight sequence and the films feel like they're 10 hours to me after that. lol

I just watched it a week or two ago. I, too, thought that it would be a supernatural horror film based on the trailer. I had to check the summary to realize that this was a noir film.

I think the psychiatrist woman actually did have feelings for him and the bag of money was actually just a test to see what he'd do. She shouted she loved him as he was leaving and If you pay attention you can tell shes very emotional the whole scene, her eyes are watering like shes ready to cry, she makes a point to say "no you're right, it wasn't about the money. But for you it clearly was." . I think the idea was to see what he'd do and when she realized he was just going to take off with the money and leave her high and dry like she meant nothing to him, then she initiated her plan of revenge.

    • @zackie8172

she didn't, it's obvious in the last scene she held a huge grudge against him for what he said to her on his show, she kept repeating to him what he said as he shot him in the ear, she was just crazy and wanted revenge

nah cate Blanchetr character didn't know the rich guy was hurting women, I think it is unrelated, since he says right before his confession that he never told it to anyone, so I guessed it was just one way to show how bradly coopers actions fucked up his victims life (it was right after the couple murder suicide scene)

Really wish Joe would expand his vocabulary. As a critic, you need to be able to express your thoughts/opinions more clearly out of respect for your audience AND the filmmakers especially if you’re not recommending folks buy a ticket to see it in the theater. When you have all these subscribers, you are an influencer. Influence is power! And with power comes …

@ 7:20, Woah, woah, woah! Don't be tellin' people not to go see this in theaters. What the hell. You gave this movie an 8, and then tell people to wait for it to come to streaming⁉ Most definitely 100% do go see this in theaters. We need movies like this. These are the kinda movies studios are afraid to put out BECAUSE people won't go see it in theaters. Go see this movie in theaters twice! Once in color, and once in black-and-white.

I'm late to the party just. saw it on hbo max, i thought this movie 9/10 and so refreshing to watch something different. Felt like the twilight zone the ending you can see from a mile away but its the how that is most important. The movie starts off with him killing someone so right off. the bat you can't trust him or that he has a secret. It was alittle slow but it was tense through and through. I want to show this film to family but it is so dark and graphic in the beginning.

It's about a 6/10...Stylish but slow, Nightmare Alley pays off with a powerful ending -- if you can hang in long enough to make it, that is.....the 1947 version is better.
