What goes around, comes around, many years later. . . we made these in 1957, using larger balloons and starch. When dry, we sprayed them white and finished with a spritz of spray snow and a pinch of glitter. We cut the tops open so we could include a sprig of mistletoe and hung them in doorways. A lot of memories . . .
I made these in school as a kid. Over 50 years ago! We used starch. We did some differently by sprinkling glitters of a single or varying colors onto the wet globe. We also used different colors of crochet (doily)string We made them as Christmas presents for our parents and grandparents. We used regular bulb to hang them by. They can become fragile so we gifted them in a small hat box that we wrapped each ball in tissue paper. Thanks for a very good memory.
Another great craft to do with my senior citizens without hot glue! I’ve been teaching them crafts for 6+ yard all new tutorials have hot glue. I’m so glad I’ve went to your oldest videos. I’m also seeing how your artwork has improved so so much over the years! This is quite fun. I wish there was a crafting channel just for teaching crafts for our elders. So many senior living communities need it.
Brought back long ago memories of 4th grade we made them for our class Christmas tree, we used yarn and liquid starch. I think I will have to make a few trees. Thanks for the memory jog. TFS
I am thinking of turning the cones over to hang dried flowers from my garden and making the balls for my string lights for my gazebo. Love the versatility from season to season.
Fun idea! I remember doing something similar with liquid starch. We used a jute string and added a thin lace and glitter. There are so many possibilities with this! I had forgotten all about making these years ago!
I love string ornaments and have made many over the years. No pictures of any of them however.....grrrr!! When I used the small balloons, I left the tied end out and hung them on a line to dry by those. I spray painted many also and then decorated with greenery, flowers, bows, etc., used ribbon to hang them. They were very pretty and got lots of comments. They were on a large Christmas tree in the front room of a nursing home for quite a few Christmas seasons. I also used larger balloons and made pumpkins at Halloween time and cut out black felt eyes, nose, mouth.
I remember doing this craft project many years ago....I made large Easter egg for my daughters I would cut a hole in the egg and add candy inside the egg....Thanks for bringing this project up again
I made these last night. some with a lot of string and some very, very minimal string. Both string amounts hold up beautifully after popping balloon. However, I found it easier to just roll them in the glue mixture, actually was less messy. I ran out of string before starting cones, so be prepared with a few hundred yards of string. I had 200 yards and made 18 3 inch balls. So easy!
Great idea, going to go a few steps further with it and add glitter after the glue to the trees so they are all full of sparkle and use as part of the table decorations for my Son and Daughter in law to be wedding in December! Thank you so much for sharing and inspiring me with more last minute ideas! Love them! You are wonderful!
I think you can purchase metallic crochet cotton in at least the gold and silver colors. I love this craft Lindsay. Thanks so much for posting the video. I will definitely be trying this.
I love these I make them very often. Before closing the balloon shut, you can slide in some candies or treats or any kind of thing you want to show through. And eventually make a little opening after to take them out.
These are fun! I haven't seen string ornaments in a long time! I remember a friend as a kid made a string lamp shade for her room! You can make cheese cloth balls for the tree, or ghosts for Halloween too! I love this time of year!!! Really fun yo do with kids too! Thicker, more absorbent string takes a bit longer to dry, but they are fun!!! Thanks for sharing these, Lindsay! These can keep the little ones busy for a while too! (I'd let them dry at least over night at least, heavy, big ones can take a couple of days to dry all the way, then you can use acrylic paint with a brush OR if absolutely totally dry, you can spray paint them too! These look great in silver or gold! You can make candle holders too! These are fun!!! You can make enough balls for an entire tree! ;)
I bought punch ball balloons and made large ones for my sons wedding. After having a few disappointingly collapse, after they were pretty much dry, I learned that I could get another balloon inside and inflate it to expand the crumpled string into shape again. I spritzed it with water just to dampen the string and let it dry again.
I really enjoyed this video. I was looking for a fun craft with Christmas trees. I'm going to definitely make a few sets of these for quick gifts for possibly coworkers, etc. Thank you!
This is such a fun craft . you can also make the balloons in three sizes ( big , bigger , and biggest ) and make a snow man out of them . They turn out really cute , and you just fasten something flat to the bottom one , to make it stand up .
Omg I’ve had the hardest time dipping the string then making it look nice around the balloon this is so much easier! BRB gotta run to the dollar store😂
It would look awesome with the string the has the gold or silver in them!! I may actually try to make some if I can find the string that I am thinking of! Thank you for all your videos!!
Thank YOU so very much for this video. I've been wanting to make both the balls and tree, but my daughter made the trees and a couple fell to the side, so I've been hesitant to make them. Now that you showed us how to do it, I feel more confident to try. I also appreciate you showing how to make the tree using the cereal box. The cost of those cones are crazy (8.00 or more) and another reason why I haven't made them yet. I almost forgot about the glue. My daughter bought some expensive stuff to make them, but you used regular white glue, which I have lots of. Again, Thank YOU!!! I am so excited to do this now!
This project would be good for Easter. Just stretch the tip of the balloon to create more of a egg shape then buy pastel colored string or soak some string in dye if you want to create it yourself
Ooooh I have just seen something similar for £10 in a very upmarket gift shop. I liked it but thought hum I dont have 10 so I will just look. However I do have string and Pva glue. Thank you for sharing. I willnbe having a go. Xxx
that's a really nice idea - like most of your ideas! :) thx also for talking about your experience because the first thing i thought when i saw you wrap the string around the balloon was: 'hm, if i try this, i'd pull the string threw the gluemixture first!' ;)
I tried this idea, myself, using a foam tree shape. I used crochet thread. But the only thing, I was unable to remove the foam, so it became a part of it. I think I will try your idea. I also, used glitter, and powdered snow, to enhance it. Thanks for your suggestions.
Thanks You. I'm going to try this with some fancy crochet yarn my mom gave me. It is the kind with crazy frills & dots & what nots. I'll let you know how they come out. hmmm you gave me some ideas...gotta go....
How cool, Lindsay. I was going to ask about mixing glitter with the glue, I see Amanda asked about dunking them in glitter after. I was wondering if mixing the glitter with the glue would waste too much. Also, could watercolour paint from a tube be mixed in the glue to colour the orb, or would it be better to paint them after they are dry? I'm thinking my sis is going to get a few for Christmas...I'm off on a hunt for balloons tomorrow lol. x
Bejay Roles yes to all, I think I would wait til the ball was dry and balloon removed and I would brush on more glue and shake on glitter. You could also spray paint it. You could add watercolor in the glue, it would make it easy to see where you have applied it too!
it needs to be a natural fiber so it will soak up the glue, you need to saturate it and let it dry completely for it to work. I have used worsted weight yearn and it worked.
thefrugalcrafter Lindsay Weirich That's good to know. I always wondered about using yarn. On all the videos I've seen on RUclips, everyone uses string. I thought if you could use yarn, you could make them colorful without have to paint them afterwards.
If you wanted to add color, would you add (acrylic) to the glue? or paint (with acrylic?) after it dries but with balloon still inside? Or would you paint at the end after removing the balloon? I was thinking these might be nice in metalic blue, metalic red, and gold to string up as decorations around the house.
Hi Lindsay, I tried this the other day (Preparing early this year lol) .... My trees haven't hardened even though they've dried. They're still really soft and flimsy. What do you think I could have done wrong?? xx
Lindsey, Where did you get your tan cotton string? Its thicker like twine but smoother like" baking string", is that what it is? I like the color too but all I can find is white.... thanks in advance.
+eveny119 It looks like crochet thread. Look in a yarn or craft store. That's my guess if she doesn't respond. You can sometimes find it in colors or different thicknesses.
+golferbabe1225 -Thanks..... I was thinking of using more of a stiff twine but when I saw this it looked to me to be a cotton bakers twine (confused what to buy, they sell it in 8 - 36 ply ???.) ...so this thickness is nice and I liked the off white color. I know nothing about crochet string.

That's a great idea for a channel! When I taught at a senior center, plastic canvas was popular and surprisingly relaxing!
@ We’ve done that 😃
Love this. It reminds me of some things we did back in the 1960s and 70s so cool thanks Lindsay
Loved the sponge technique on the ballons; much easier and less messy than when soaking the thread in the glue. Thanks!
Brought back long ago memories of 4th grade we made them for our class Christmas tree, we used yarn and liquid starch. I think I will have to make a few trees. Thanks for the memory jog. TFS

I've sprinkled iridescent glitter on mine while they were wet still also and used thin twine from the dollar tree to make them more rustic

Your tips for winding string on balloon before gluing and differently for tree--very helpful.
Janet Baker thanks:)
Thank you for this! Really appreciate that you included the one where it didn't go according to plan. Us novice crafters want to see that part lol
I’m glad you appreciated the “fail” part. 😂
Amazing DIY String Ornamnents your super talented Lindsay 😊😊Gracie 🙂
I do enjoy playing with string and glue. I remember making these balls when my kids were young.
Great decor for Easter, weddings and Christmas! I remember doing this as a kid. What fun!
I think you can purchase metallic crochet cotton in at least the gold and silver colors. I love this craft Lindsay. Thanks so much for posting the video. I will definitely be trying this.
Shirley Roach I have gold, great idea!
I love these I make them very often. Before closing the balloon shut, you can slide in some candies or treats or any kind of thing you want to show through. And eventually make a little opening after to take them out.

A great idea. Nice project to make with kids
I used to make these with my kids. We glittered them. They gave them as gifts
Fun project! Did something similar with my Girl Scout troop years ago. Would look great painted, decorated, glittered, etc.!
I bought punch ball balloons and made large ones for my sons wedding. After having a few disappointingly collapse, after they were pretty much dry, I learned that I could get another balloon inside and inflate it to expand the crumpled string into shape again. P3XSONS thank you for the tip!
Great idea, Thanks
Love this, going to try and also put some things in the balloons, like bells etc x
I haven’t done that is about 45 yrs. The kids loved making them.
It's fun! I always wanted to make them, and never did. Thank you for sharing. Take care, Kim :)
I really enjoyed this video. I was looking for a fun craft with Christmas trees. I'm going to definitely make a few sets of these for quick gifts for possibly coworkers, etc. Thank you!

i would have done the same.
Glad to know about the glue water ratio. Thanks for the video.
Party hats are great to use as well for the cones :)
Very cool! Thanks for sharing this Lindsay :) Hope you are having a wonderful weekend!
It would look awesome with the string the has the gold or silver in them!! I may actually try to make some if I can find the string that I am thinking of! Thank you for all your videos!!
I always wondered how those were made. Thank you. I have tons of string. Edith
Dziękuję za cenne informacje 😊❤
Great idea! I don't think I have made anything out of string for Christmas. That would be a good idea! Thank you
Very Beautiful ❤️
You are so wonderfully creative. Do you ever run out of ideas? 😉
🎄❄️☃️🍷
Not yet 😆
Isn't it funny that I'm watching this 8 years later as summer is about to begin, and stll lovng it?

Im definitely trying this tutorial this year for the holidays! ♥️
I'm so doing this for Christmas! Little paint and a little glitter.
I think these look great. I will try it this afternoon and give you a link back on my blog.
This project would be good for Easter. Just stretch the tip of the balloon to create more of a egg shape then buy pastel colored string or soak some string in dye if you want to create it yourself

Wondetful. Can they be painted. TFS
OliviaDaughter sure, I would use a metallic spray paint after the glue is dry and it has been removed from the form:)
Would the use of heavier string or light rope be a problem? Thanks for the tutorial.

Hi my friend ..cool channel!!! Thank you... beautiful .
Too cute!!!
Thank you for mentioning that glue soaked string does not work as well.

You could add acrylic or just use colored cotton string.
Hi Lindsay, I tried this the other day (Preparing early this year lol) .... My trees haven't hardened even though they've dried. They're still really soft and flimsy. What do you think I could have done wrong?? xx
Jane Slater not enough glue I'd say:)
I'm such a directioner at 1:19 when she said "one way" I said "or another" ( I know that it's not their song but I like the one direction version )
Mahrukh Yar ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh same
this is great! love it : ) TFS
Gonna do this thanks for the tips
thanks Lindsay xx

hi there greetings from Germany, can i used any glue?luv ur videos..bless you
any white glue or liquid starch will work:)
thefrugalcrafter Lindsay Weirich
Thank YOU so much for answering this question. I'm going to try it with Elmer's Glue and see how that works.
Lisa Did Elmer's glue works?
glitter on the wet glue?
