She's Home! Our RV Painted in Mexico

- She’s home!!! Our sweet, old bus is finally sitting proudly back in our driveway after five and a half months at the spa (aka body and paint shop). She crossed into Mexico in the middle of June as a sad, peeling, corroded “hot mess”. She crossed back into the U.S. smooth, restored, bright and shiny with a skip in her step. We couldn’t be happier with how our painter repaired and painted the exterior of our bus.

I actually loved the bare aluminum with all the rivets. That would have been a one of a kind look but it looks like he did a great job.
Merry Christmas 🎅
Good job being patient, when anyone is doing a restoration on an older vehicle the unexpected is to be expected. The bus looks nice.
Thank you J.G. - there were plenty of unexpected things on this project for sure!
Followed the Bus Grease Monkey link. Enjoying the channel.
Welcome. We are looking forward to having Scott here to work on our bus.
What a beauty. Simple classic paint design with great colors. Well done.
Thank you Jerry - we are very pleased with the job the painter did!
Nice paint job, and it does give it the vintage look.
Thank you Bill
So excited for you guys! I think it is a great idea to retain the original bus theme, we are also attempting to do that. Hope to see you all out on the road. You are truly blessed.
Thank you Don - Are you building a vintage bus? We are blessed indeed - thank you. I hope we can meet up sometime
The bus looks amazing with it's new colours. Retro. 👍I like that you have kept it almost original to how it would look like back in the day. Very cool look. 👍
Thank you Ian - we love the new look!
That’s a great looking bus! Now, I know how one can stealth camp in a bus. Lol.
Rosinante has new barding and is living the impossible dream. :)
D.
Very cool! The colors remind me a little of the older greyhound bus colors. Looks Great!
Thank you Greg - yes - like the really old greyhounds but a little more vibrant - we are very pleased with how it turned out and excited to get back to work :)
Wow! She looks amazing, love the colour scheme and the layout, really suits the bus nicely,...xxx
Thank you - we tried to keep it somewhat "retro"
Well you succeeded, she looks great and I look forward to seeing what else you are going to do with her,... Incidentally; Have you a name for the bus yet,... ? xx
Yes we have named her "Rocinante" after Donquixote's trusty horse.
@@BeginningfromthisMorning Oh right nice, roθiˈnante in Spanish......
It looks great! So glad you kept it with the vintage look!!!
Thank you Debbi - we love the look!
this look more like a bus to me and I really enjoy that !!! the stripe give it a more "classic look" nice job done by the painter and enjoy your freshly painted bus !
Thank you!
Beautiful paint job. I do like what you picked for the design of the bus.
Thank you Mary we are very pleased with how she turned out.
FUN! FUN! FUN! I love the treatment you chose. It looks great! Now get back to work! ;-)
Yes indeed!
Congratulations it looks great cool looking paint scheme for her well worth the wait now on to the inside, good times all your hard work is paying off can't wait to see it finished. Thanks for the ride.
Thank you Brian - we are very excited to start the inside!
Finally! We've been waiting just as you have. But you can look at it as taking an enforced break and now you can jump back in with fresh enthusiasm. Now we wait some more. Keep the vision.
Thank you Dwight - our thoughts exactly!! We are ready to jump in with both feet!
Juan, your bus turned out amazing! I need to get caught back up to your videos!
Thank you j jones - The painter did a great job!
Looks great. I definitely like the vintage bus look
Thank you Joe!
Looks absolutely fantastic or as some would say - the dogs bollocks.👍😀
LOL - first time hearing that expression but I love it! Thank you!
Nice paint job. Happy to see it home.
Thank you Ryan - a big big sigh of relief after all the trouble we had getting her down there.
So glad the bus iui s back. Been waiting to see it. Can't wait until the next step.
Thank you Mike - we are organizing the projects and getting ready to ramp up on the inside
Bus looks amazing! Your videos are getting much better.
Thank you guys!
Guys the bus looks amazing! Congrats! The wait was ridiculous!
Thank you Werner! I will admit that the wait had us a little nervous but we are thrilled with the work the painter did.
@@BeginningfromthisMorning Fast, good, cheap, choose any two!
100% Sylvan! Pick 2
Awesome for you. I am sure you will be going non stop with projects - remember to take breaks ;-) Good luck.
Thank you Moracas - yes we have an ever-growing list going - your advice is very sound - thank you
Hey Michelle surprise on the light bar!!! The bus looks great my anticipation isn't anything like yours was the only thing that matters is you like it. It does look like a vintage bus. Thank you for posting.
Thanks Ed - I sprung that on her but we are still deciding what to do up there :)
G'day from Australia Guy's, love the new look of the bus, she's an awesome machine
Thank you David - we are very pleased with how she turned out
Really pleased for you, it looks realy great bert your both so excited to have it home.

Yes! We are very excited about starting the inside build-out
It looks awesome!
Thank you Greg! We are very pleased with how she turned out
Looks great Juan!!
Thank you Danny we are very pleased with how she turned out!
I know that this is months after you posted this video but in response to the center lane, the center lane is considered the thru lane. That is the lane that large rigs should be using for travel. Those responding otherwise, have never needed to stop and start a large vehicle to accommodate merging and exiting traffic.
Bus looks great, Guys! Can't hardly wait to start watching the "build series"! I'm sure y'all are breathing much better now that the bus is home. Have you named it yet? Congrats, again, and, I'm so happy for y'all!

Thank you Jim - We are organizing the project list as we speak! I can't wait to get back into it again! We have named her "Rocinante" after Don Quixote's trusty steed!
Very Nice. Nice bright headlights are great
Thank you Glenn - these original halogen lights are pretty tired, so some nice bright LED ones should fit the bill nicely. The new shop looks like it is coming along very nicely.
Amazing..... love the classics
Thank you Dennis - exactly our thoughts - we wanted her to look like a vintage bus
Woot! Looking sharp.
Thanks Shawn - we are SOOO relieved to have her back - and excited to get to work!
Holy Moly! Let the pros replace your W/S! No kidding. It is not as easy as you think! Congrats! Enjoy your ride.
Thank you Gloria - We stopped expecting things to be easy long ago. We got a quote from the glass place to get the windshield installed. To our surprise they do stock these old windshields - however, they stock them at their Las Vegas facility. So they were going to have to ship them down - at a cost of $350. The grand total for replacing the windshields was going to be just shy of $2000. By contrast - we were able to get the glass from Luke at US Coach in New Jersey for $185 per side. Luke told us he and his brother do them all the time - and he is 74 years old :). I clearly don't mind paying people to do a job - but I was told it would take about 3 hours to complete and now I know that the glass costs about $370.00 (probably much less wholesale) if it costs $350.00 to ship it from Las Vegas that puts material costs at about $720.00 - That means the install cost is about $1200.00 - or roughly $400.00 an hour. For $1200.00 I am going to at least attempt to put these windshields in.
Looks really nice 😎👍
Thank you Yasin - we are really happy with how it turned out.
Yah! You're back in business! (Actually you'll pick up where you guys left off) Nice color/paint!
Yes! Thank you
Woo hoo! Very nice!

Looks great!!!!
Thank you Bill!
Very awesome and yes they have a very great deal of in Mexico and if you go to the right one like you did and prepped it well like your guy did it will last but it's that once a year wax job that you will love to do to keep up on it. Love the colors great look on the vintage. Thanks for sharing
Thanks Chris, we had a very strong recommendation and it worked out well. Like you said - 95% of the work is the prep work.
Looks great! 😃👍🏻
Thank you Bill - we are very pleased with how she turned out!
Looks great. Paint work takes a lot of time (mostly prep). Ours took about 11 months, but it was inside a building over the winter and I was able to get some other projects done on it during that time. (Actually, those projects caused the body/paint work to take longer than it probably would have.)
Thank you Bruce - we would have LOVED to be able to work on the bus while it was waiting but with it being so far away it just was not feasible. It would have probably eased our anxiety a bit to have it in a place we could still work on it - but as you stated - it would have probably even taken longer
Mbhester
Great job on bus, we own a 63-06 that we acquired in 91and began the long process of conversion. Still own and travel in the bus. It was and is a long process for sure but we love it until one of those too often problems occur with an old bus and then it’s a different story. We are passing through your area heading on west. Good luck.
Awesome! Drop us a line when you pass through - we love to meet fellow bus people! juan@beginningfromthismorning.com
I like the color scheme. The paint shop owner must be happy that you are happy with the work.
Thank you Kevin - we worked through quite a few paint schemes before we landed on this one. We are pleased with how it turned out and look forward to continuing the work. How is the MCI coming along?
That was well worth waiting for. Congrats! Looks GREAT!! (I was worried the painter was taking you and the bus for a ride...haha)
LOL thank you John - you were not the only one - Michelle was having dreams that we ended up in Mexican jail!! We prayed more than a few times for that old bus to be OK down there and it looks like it worked :)
IF you change out the headlight cans, let people know on bus conversion int'l. Somebody the other day is looking for THOSE stock round ones . Thanks. and great to finally see it !
Thank you Wayne - we LOVE the round lights - just not the low output of the lights - we are hoping to keep the look but have brighter lights.
Yea!!! 😀🎊🎉 Looks awesome!

Wondering if you guys were doing all the interior yourself or will you be taking it back to mexico for upholstery work? If you take it back to Mexico, who will you use? I am looking for some small auto upholstery work done on some truck seats.
We are very likely just going to do most of it ourselves. The next time we go back to Mexico we hope it is for a vacation :)
Beautiful.
At 3:39, however, the very first still image, upper left of the video, there appears to be paint missing around the rivet.
I suggest you contact the auto shop and record the exact paint that was used.
Just in case you need a touch-up and don't want to head back to Mexico.
Hi ianrsigel - I think what you are seeing is a glare from the camera not actually missing paint. The painter did send us home with approximately a quart of each color of paint.
Nice show me more I love it. Got to get some ponies in that baby like big turbos
Any new video coming out about the bus
Thanks Derek. We have many videos since this one came out. We try to release a new video weekly...doesn't always happen but that's the goal. Thanks for joining us.
Beautiful!! Great job done, and a wonderful idea to keep the paint scheme vintage - really suites the bus. A thought on lighting, could you do some LED driving/fog lights in the front bumper holes instead of mounting a big modern LED light bar between the headlights?
Thank you Josh - great suggestion those big holes had fog lamps originally but they are all sealed up - maybe some thinner roundish LED lights would fit nicely in there :) - great suggestion I will look into that
@@BeginningfromthisMorning I'm confident whatever you settle on will turn out great! Looking forward to seeing the inside come together as well. Thanks for the reply and an early Merry Christmas to you and the family!
Thank you Josh - Merry Christmas to you and your family as well!
That looks great. just found your channel and subbed.
Awesome! Welcome aboard!
Very nice, between the headlights would be nice for her name to be written.
I've got a set of vintage, parabolic-lensed , Cibie fog & driving lights on my Travstar 320. I will replace the bulbs with LED's, but am very aware to not just drive around with them on even now. I absolute despise all the jackholes driving around with their lights bars blazing away in traffic.
I agree - I intended to use them on boondocking dirt road type situations or for security around the bus at night (if they got tripped). We are very aware of keeping our lights out of drivers eyes. We just returned a set of lights we had in mind for the headlights because they were not DOT approved and threw a "round" pattern like a spotlight instead of the "flat" pattern that keeps the light out of drivers eyes. We are trying to do things correctly and appreciate the feedback.

THE GRUMPY BUS
Thank you Marshall - We really wanted her to keep looking like a bus. I know it is a fairly simple scheme and some folks don't like it but we love it. It is exactly what we designed and the colors are the exact colors we picked out. We are working on a video about how we went about designing it and relaying that information to the painter so that there was no confusion over what we were asking for.
Very exciting....Looks Beautiful. If you go with a LED light bar, go with a single row and put it in the gap between the bumper and body, you don't want modern tech distracting too much from the vitage look. There is some classic looking HID lights that you could change to instead of LED. Check out "SICK-HID's"
A light bar should be as high as possible.
@@BajanAlan I agree, but for the sake of asthetics and having a light bar compared to not having it "in the gap" is a good place. Maybe they could put ia curved light bar on the roof. I'm sure whatever they do will be awesome!
Thanks Karl - I will check out "SICK-HID's". We are still deciding what to do up there but more light is absolutely needed - these poor old incandescent lights do not put out much light at all
@@BeginningfromthisMorning I was going to upgrade to LED on my 1974 VW Kombi but then I thought if I'm going to that trouble I might as well go all the way and get HID's. I've search for a while and I found 'Sick HID's'. They custom make them to whatever you want, I think they are in CA.
As an over-the-road truck driver, PLEASE, PLEASE, FOR THE LOVE OF GOD, DO NOT PUT A LIGHT BAR ON THAT BUS. There are way too many clueless people out there with those things that have no idea they are blinding the hell out of everybody. If you read the literature, they are even labeled "OFF-ROAD USE ONLY", and that is exactly the reason why. That being said, looks like a nice build that's off to a great start.
Thanks James - we were thinking the light bar would be used for boondocking or traveling on backwoods dirt roads and for security around the bus if something trips them in the middle of the night. We have no intention of running them on the road. We even returned a set of headlights we just bought because they were not DOT approved and the pattern was a big spot-light. rather than the flat - DOT approved pattern that does not blind oncoming drivers. We are doing our best to do things correctly and appreciate the feedback.
Cuantos pesos le costó pintar en México 🇲🇽?
Hi guys, great result! Now, don’t scratch it putting the solar on top ;-) White gloves from now on ;-) Juan, I send you a mqtt related email a few weeks ago. Maybe check your spamfilter again or let me know if I have to resend. Congratulations on getting your beautiful vintage bus back.
Thank you Freddy - we will be very careful with the solar :) I did receive your email and I am reading through it - thank you so much
It's been since forever... Was it a "backburner" type job for them or has there been some problems?
Thank you Andy - Initially, there was a ton of rain delays - they had an extremely wet monsoon season. It also required much more prep work than they originally anticipated. He also had to fabricate 3 or 4 piece of aluminum for different pieces that were damaged. They also have a different mentality towards time in Mexico ... they tend not to rush around as much as we do.
So...why did you have this done in Mexico? Cost? If so, how much did you save?
We got a strong recommendation from a friend who owns the same model bus as us. He has been doing business with Carlos for over 20 years. The cost was significantly lower than in the states - With all the work Carlos did this would have cost around $30K in the U.S. We got it done for $8K in Mexico
@@BeginningfromthisMorning that's a great deal.
sweeet.
Thank you Richard
WOW it looks fantastic :)
Thank you Aaron - we are very pleased with how she turned out
Hey guys, looks really good, glad you didn't have any problems on your trip back.... I am wondering however, how old the tires are on it?, I haven't watched all your videos yet and you may have addressed this already but if it sat outside for a few years in the desert the tires could be pooched, they will have lots of tread on them but be brittle from the UV rays, when I picked my MC5A up from Palm Springs I only got to central Washington before I blew a driver side steer tire at 65 Mph..... that was fun.... especially pulling a car trailer, rear tires aren't that big a deal if they blow cause you can continue with a single. but when a steer tire blows very often the driver will lose control and roll the vehicle , not trying to scare you but at least replacing the steer tires is a good bet, I replaced both steer tires after that and over the years all the drive tires now.... they blew one at a time and never at a good time... one cost me 750.00 because of where I was and what was available, the new bus, I'm putting all new tires on before I go anywhere.... blowing a tire on the road will ruin your whole day.... believe me.... if you've already addressed this, disregard my ramblings... :-)
Thank you James - Tires look really good - The previous owner kept very good records and it shows that they were bought in 2015 HOWEVER when we looked at the date codes on the tires we noticed that they were manufactured in 2013. We have always read and been told that anything over 7 years old is time to replace the tires - which is exactly what we intend on doing before we take off. We keep tire covers on them to keep the sun off of them and they don't show any visible signs at all of cracking or aging but we don't trust them so we will replace them. Man the thought of blowing a tire on this thing is enough to make me go buy new ones!
Hi Juan, if your tires were manufactured in 2013 they should be fine, the rule of thumb is you shouldn't buy tires more than 8 years old, so if they have been sitting on a shelf for 8 years don't buy em' cause there won't be enough time to run them out, tires will last 15 years or so if they are looked after (covered as you do).... we used to run re-treads on our drive tires on our Hi-way trucks years ago and they were more than 8 years old.... my suggestion would be to put new steer tires on when you are ready to use it full time and keep the old ones as spares, the drive tires will last for years yet, mine were over 20 years old and sat it the desert southwest for years, I was just trying to get it home and didn't quite make it, fortunately I was able to keep it on the road when the tire blew and we just changed it out but if someone had been in the left lane I would have hit them as it went halfway into that lane before I was able to gather it up and pull over... bet you guys are exited to get working on it again.... we're going through a cold stretch here so I have to wait a bit to get back at mine
Great information - thank you! We 100% will replace the steers and probably ask for advice on the drive tires. Having a blow out sounds like no fun at all. Before too long we want to go through all the mechanicals of the bus to ensure anything we can do as preventative maintenance is done and we are looking for a "bus expert" to give us a checklist of what we need to be diligent of. We research and read a lot on the forums and we know to never overheat or lug the engine - keep and eye on and change the fluids regularly etc. We have a good size leak between the transmission and the engine itself that we are unsure what to do about and a few other questions.
well fire away, I'm happy to answer any questions I can, do you have anyone in the Phoenix area that can pull wrenches on it if you need?... they are pretty simple by today's standards but can still be a bit intimidating if you are unfamiliar with them, you seem to be willing to tackle almost anything so you should be able to do most everything yourself, on the oil leak, if it's engine oil, look to see if it's actually coming out of the seam between the engine and transmission housings, if it is the rear main seal on the crank is leaking, I'm not sure on your model being slanted as it is if you can get the oil pan off the engine in the bus or not but you can pull the pan, loosen all the main bearing caps and roll the old seal out and a new one in using a tool called a "sneaky pete"... basically a long thin rod... it's an old school tool and not that common anymore ... it's not a job for the faint of heart as you need a 600 foot pound torque wrench and other specialty tools, that's why I was wondering about an old Detroit mechanic in your area, that's the worst case scenario, if it's just coming from the rear of the engine somewhere, look to see if it's coming from what's called the slobber tubes, there are 2 tubes that go into the air box and allow oil to escape from leaky blower seals, this is pretty common, they are right at the back of the engine just forward of the bellhousing webs, it's easy to mistake a bad crank seal for the slobber tubes, hopefully that's what it is, let me know
Just thought of something else to check.... there should be a housing on top of the blower with a big butterfly in it, it shuts the air off to the engine, these old 2 stroke Detroit's are famous for running away if an oil seal in the blower starts leaking substantially, the engine starts to run on oil and it can't be shutdown except to starve it of air and that's what that butterfly is for, some are air, some are electric, check to make sure it works or repair it if it doesn't, that Is the main reason for the slobber tubes, so the oil can't accumulate in the air box and get pulled into the combustion chambers, not trying to scare you as it's pretty rare for this to happen on a good engine but it's better to be safe than sorry
Yes bus looks great, but please do not add a light bar on the front----BLINDING To Other Drivers !
Thank Monty - the light bar would be used on dirt roads for boondocking type scenarios not for driving down the street.
FINALLY 😎😂👍
LOL yes we are soo glad to have her home!

Hi Charles - we ended up paying $8000 because our coach needed to be stripped down to the metal (It had something like 7 or 8 layers of paint in some places). The original quote was for $6500. Carlos communicated with us through the whole process but there were many, many rain delays (the bus was gone for about 5 months all told). His name is Juan Carlos, but most people just call him Carlos. His business is called "Taller de Carroceria y Pintura" and he can be reached at (520)234-6010. He is very kind and helpful and did a wonderful job. We have no hesitation in recommending him and his shop.
How much do u pay
I ended up paying $8000 for everything which included bodywork, full sanding to the metal, sealing all the seams, and finish - He used Dupont automotive paint.
Talk about high maitenance

Why are you hogging the middle lane?
Alan Collinge that’s just where semis and stuff drive. It’s usually more dangerous to use the right lane anyway since most car drivers have a stroke trying to figure out how to merge in, from on-ramps, when there’s a big vehicle.
@@josephsamsor1698 I thought that these days it's an offence to hog the middle lane.
Alan Collinge hmm I’m not sure. Honestly it could be a written rule somewhere I don’t know about but generally in my experience truckers stick to the middle lane. Rarely do I find a trucker way to the right unless it’s a two lane road or they’re starting to fight an incline and their truck can’t keep up. I actually remember someone saying middle lane hogging is an offense in Britain or something but i haven’t heard of that in the U.S. Of course you don’t want to be blocking the fast lane but other than that it’s seems to be fine to drive in the middle. I might have to look into that but I like to just follow the flow of traffic anyway. In my area the fast last goes at 15mph over the speed limit and cops don’t bother them.
@@josephsamsor1698 You are correct about it being an offence in the UK but the last time I drove in Seattle, which was about 6 months ago, the highways had signs, some of which said "keep to the right when not overtaking" and others which said "It's an offence to hog the overtaking lanes" or words to that effect. In the UK it's also an offence to undertake a slower moving vehicle.
5.5 months to paint a bus? hmmmm
Yes - it is very labor intensive to prep correctly. The bus had been through a few poorly executed paint jobs that were peeling and flaking off. There were also a few weather delays and a few hiccups (we needed to source new headlight buckets, he fabricate patches for 4 different spots that we did not know were even a problem, the rear taillights fell apart, and there were quite a few spots of corrosion that needed to be cleaned and smoothed. This is also just a guy and a couple of his sons not an entire paint shop full of people.
