It helps to know the context of some of these matches. e.g.
12:48 Is a world cup match between S.Africa who have been world Champions 4 times vs Japan who aren't considered a major team.
Now look at the time and score . Rugby matches last for 80 mins, but you keep playing until there is a break in play e.g. one team scores, the ball goes into touch, there's a knock on or a penalty.
S.Africa were leading 32-29, then Japan won a penalty and could have gone for goal which would have tied the game. Instead they chose to kick for touch and go for a try and the win. They kept the ball in play for an additional 4 minutes after the 80 were up and won the game in what's regarded as the biggest upset in Rugby WC history.

14:58 - In that still you see the player in black's arm? He is trying to "hold up" the ball and prevent his opponent from "grounding" it. If the ball doesn't touch the ground the score will not be given.

I met JL in London back in the 90's and he was so lovely. I asked if I could hug him and he said of course I could. I'm 5'7" and I could get around his sides but not much more than that. I was also wearing a platform sole and still had to look up at him. So sad when he passed. One of a kind.

When a player scores a try (touchdown) on the goaline or ingoal (endzone) they get a chance to add an 2 extra point conversion, but the kick must kicked perpendicular to where the ball was grounded, that's why you'll see players try to score as close to the posts as they can to make the conversion easier for the kicker

When the player carries the ball over the line for a try other players will still try and tackle them because if they can get their hand under the ball before it hits the ground then the try won’t count. Similarly if the contact can make the player lose control of the ball there’s a chance the try won’t count because the attacking player needs to apply direct pressure on the ball to the ground for it to be a try.

When you said there was no need to tackle him after he was over the line. There is. They have to actually touch the ball on the ground. If a player can get underneath the ball, even just a hand, so the ball doesn't touch the ground, it's called being Held Up, and NO SCORE
On the very last one, if you check, you can see the guy is trying to put his hand under the ball

A "stiff arm" (at 1:33) means totally different things in American football and rugby. What you were watching was a hand off, where a player can push another player away using the palm of his hand (not a fist or elbow). It bloody hurts if your on the receiving end and I've still got a crooked nose after having it broken in a hand off. A 'stiff arm' is what Americans call a 'clothesline', in other words you attempt to sweep a player off his feet by extending you arm at his throat level. It would get you sent off in a game of rugby, and booed every inch of the way by the crowd..

Rugby union is the greatest game! It caters for numerous skills, strength, power, speed, intelligence and teamwork. You can be slightly built or a monster, there's a position for you in the team. I'm a Kiwi and live for All Black success, but accept defeats as long as the game is the winner.

  • @KevinN-df8eo
    @KevinN-df8eo Месяц назад +2

The whole game IMHO is about spatial awareness and just damn well knowing your team mate will be on your shoulder every time. Forget the physicality, it's a thinking parsons game. Compare this to soccer and we are going towards the opponents try line far more than they are i.e. no kicking back to the defence, or back and forth, you have to keep moving, ball in hand or you lose it.

This is a terribly named video. these are not the best from a skills point of view, but some are ok. but the majority are important because of the importance of the game and its result. world cup wins, or very unexpected results etc. but there are many far better actual tries than these. its a bit of a click bait title for the video that you are revieving

@@jennifer3735 Yes I do jennifer, I was pointing out that the video that he was reacting to was terribly named, in that way he wasnt left with what would have been the wrong impression that these were the best tries ever scored. i'll highlight just 1 here, the try by japan vs the springboks. it was a last minute try, that allowed the cherry blossoms (japan) to beat SA, the spring boks. The match was dubbed the miricle of bgrighton, As it was played in brighton england in a world cup, its the match winning try, that was scored after japan turned down a penalty kick that would have drawn the match, Instead they risked it all to go for the win. With that victory, they announced their arrival as a true tier 1 nation, or at least that that was where they were heading. this has only happened 1 time before in history where Italy transitioned from tier 2 to 1. Japan were massive under dogs headding intoi the match, the try itself technically isnt any thing special, but its the result it generated is why it made the video. but the video would have been better named important trys in rugby, rather than best or most skilled that it was titled

If you want to see the respect that players give to ref look for videos with Nigel Owens, probably one of the internationally respected refs. He has been retired for a few years now, there are other great refs (including at least 1 woman ref) at the top level. If you come across a clip where Nigel say at a line-out "I'm straighter than that" it's because he came out as gay, he worried about how it would affect his career, but it didn't, the respect was because he was fair, and explained his decisions, and the players knew it, accepted it and got on with the game. Now look at the tantrums and attempts to intimidate the refs in American football or baseball.

Those first few tries, and a few others by the team dressed in black are the New Zealand national rugby team, the All Blacks, the world's most successful international sports team for any sport. Over the last 120 years they have won 76% of all games they've played and have a winning advantage over every team they have played. @1:13 - Going over the Try Line doesn't mean you have scored the Try. You have to actually place the ball down with pressure. As such, a defender attempting a tackle to put the attacking player into touch in some way, to try and get under the ball before it hits the ground, or by causing them to drop the ball slightly - thus causing a "knock-on" as a way to stop the try from being scored even if the ball has past the try line.

If you're brought down before the try line (In Zone) you can still score if you have momentum enough to take you over the line and you ground the ball in one movement. You can even come to a stop before the line and if you're within arms reach you just reach out and put the ball down over the line - it's still a try and will count. Some of these were close but they were all successful tries

You mentioned that there was no need to tackle him once he was in the end zone. Let me explain why it matters. Depending on where you ground the Ball in the Endzone the Kicker gets to kick from a diffrent location for the conversion(2 extra Points) so by forcing them to ground the ball as far as possible to the side of the field they increase the likelyhood of the kicker missing the conversion

If you want to look into other sports. The national sports of Ireland are Hurling and Gaelic Football. Hurling is one of the oldest sports in the world, traditonally used to train warriors, its played on a pitch like football but you play with a flat bat called a hurl and heavy ball and you have to dribble with the ball on the stick, you hit the ball and other players sometiems with the hurls and score in a net like a soccer net. etc most of us grow up playing this and professional hurling is huge in ireland. Gaelic football is like soocer but you can hold the ball and theres dribbling rules where you have to bounce the ball, drop it to you feet or pass it every few steps.

With Rugby, the attacking team should always have support runners both sides of the ball carrier.
That way it gives you two options within basically a split second, to decide which runner you use.
One can also be used as a decoy runner, while you play the other side.
And usually with a wrap around player who originally passed the ball.
    It’s like chess. ♟️ I guess.
