There are certain parts of Spain (spercially in the Northeast) with Celtic culture/History/folklore like Galicia or Asturias. The Spanish group is from Asturias, so that's the reason why you think it sounds celtic. Spain is very diverse and every region has its own characteristics.
I was there in 2013. Yes you can drink alcohol, but it's Sweden AND Eurovision, alcohol is very expensive. So most people bought drinks on entry and then stayed to watch the show. There are no breaks long enough to go to the concessions to buy more alcohol and after you have spent $1000's for flights, hotels, tickets etc... you don't want to miss anything. The atmosphere is always incredible inside the arena but it's a marathon not a sprint. This ain't Coachella.
Galicia and Asturias are historically Celtic cultures, though the native Celtic language died out way back in the era of the Reconquista. We all know that Isabella and Ferdinand were some vicious people, and they probably made sure to stamp anything like that out while forcibly reuniting Spain.
Any other year I think she might have won, maybe safe for the one previous. I was still happy Emmelie won, but man I have a hard time not loving Margaret's performance.
Just for Lauren and Mike information, Linda Woodrof (the funny lady and EBU spokesperson) is Sarah Dawn Finer, actually a well known singer and comedian from Sweden, and former participant and host of Melodifestivalen (the swedish national selection for Eurovision). One of my favorite artists, I must say. I am pretty sure she made an intevral act during one of the semi finals in 2013 and sang an ABBA song.
That little instrument that is played by agathonas from Greece is called "baglamas" and he passed away this year. By the way tell Lauren she is a beauty.
Fun fact: the great choreography in Azerbaijan's song was from the Greek choreographer Fokas Evangelinos. In 2005 he participated in the Eurovision Song Contest with the delegation which brought Greece in the first place. He has directed the songs of numerous foreign artists that participated in the Eurovision Song Contest representing Russia, Ukraine, Belarus, Azerbaijan and winning some of the first places or ending in Top 10. :-)
Also, Lynda Woodruff is a character played by super talented Melodifestivalen-veteran Sarah Dawn Finer. Definitely check out "I remember love" and "Moving on" if you wanna hear vocals for days!
We love Eurovision nights it’s corny cringing and absolutely fantastic in equal measure, people all over Europe have parties and the voting can be hilarious.
I couldn't get anyone to go to Malmö with me so was watching on my tablet, on shakey internet in an tent in a forrest in the wrong part of Sweden, with a music festival going on behind me. Drunk people passing by, stopping to see what was going on and staying for a few songs. Pretty magical actually. I love Kedvesem, I don't understand any of the words but still sing it, it was my standout from this year.
That actually sounds like a really memorable way to experience the show. In 2012 I was in a folk highschool and we were a large group that watched the show from that year in the large gathering hall on projector.
31:13 The Russian entry is co-written by Swedes, and all the five (weirdly dressed...) backupsingers are Swedes. One of the songwriters, Gabriel Alares, is also singing backup. He was also a backing singer, and composer of Russia´s entry in 2015 ("A Million Voices), Moldova´s entry in 2016 ("Falling Stars), and Norway´s entry in 2016 ("Icebreaker")
I personally looove romania 2013. This song is why I started to watch Eurovision. A friend showed me and I instantly was into the whole thing. The mixture of great voice, great show, great dancers, the trashy popbeat in the backround and a little bit of surprise is just art. Perfect example for eurovision: It’s not for everbody but you can’t deny that every song is a little piece of art.
The choreographer and director of Azerbaijan was a Greek guy called Fokàs Evaggelinòs. He was choreographer in many countries entries all those years. He also choreographed the winning song of Greece My number one! In Greece’s entry, this tiny instrument is called Μπαγλαμάς (Baglamàs) The old singer Agàthonas Iakovídis, unfortunately he died a month ago
I didn't appreciate Moldova's song back then but I have watched the whole thing again and that was the only song that stuck in my head. Really beautiful song and voice. It deserved definitely better place.
Loved your reaction! About the Spanish entry; yes, bagpipes are traditional instruments in northern Spain (particularly in Asturias, the region both ESDM and I come from)due to our celtic heritage 😁
Granpa+papous in Greek :) and I love that song cause it has Greek color, it combines old style with a modern twist, has humor and it's good and uplifting. I prefer sending that over a generic English pop song over and over again. "Alcohol Is Free" is a song performed by Koza Mostra (a Greek rock band) and Agathonas Iakovidis (a Greek folk singer of rebetiko style). Was composed as a mix of ska, punk and rebetiko music styles. The British Daily Mirror newspaper called it "certifiably brilliant madness".
47:38 - The acts that beat Robin Stjernberg in the Swedish semifinal were these: 1) Ralf Gyllenhammar - Bed on Fire ruclips.net/video/vAGE2V6-k70/видео.html (Ralf is the lead singer in a famous metal/rockband Mustasch whose albums topped at #2 2011 and #4 2012 in Sweden) 2) Ulrik Munther - Tell the World I'm Here ruclips.net/video/JDDl71G9ixQ/видео.html (Ulrik was a kid performer that won the Nordic Junior "Eurovision Song Contest" in 2009 and had since then released albums that reached #1 in Sweden) One can also ad that Robin did NOT win the Second Chance round. There he got second place behind: 1) Anton Ewald - Begging ruclips.net/video/V7H7z2Ao6SE/видео.html
The Spanish song sounds Irish and the culture in the northwest of Spain, where the group is based, is very celtic-influenced! Also, fun fact, the vocalist is Formula 1 pilot Fernando Alonso's ex
I do think her nerves got to her... I know I can go way flat if stresed enough. The song itself, studio version is lovely, and I love the SPanish Lyrics
The guy behind Azerbaijan's Performance is Fokas Evangelinos he is from Greece and he was two prizes (one with Greece 2005 and one with Russia 2008) and several 2 and 3rd places
The song from Moldova actually won the national final with the English version ("A Million Stars") but decided to go with the Romanian version for Eurovision.
And a brilliant performance was born.. Those Romanian lyrics carry far more impact than the English ones, and while the Maya reference was relevant one year after 2012, these days people would be scratching their heads.
Oh, that's kinda curious. I always thought Eurovision would be cooler if the different nations were represented by whatever national language, or local minority language, they possessed.
The Romanian guy's performance was brilliant - and you asked the question "is he serious?" ... You don't get that level of vocal performance in front of 200 million people without being serious. The song was pure gash - but the performance was fantastic.
bonnie tyler is welsh, she lives in swansea wales, her 80's hit was *total eclipse of the heart* ( home to catherine zeta jones douglas* and anthony hopkins) in 2013 she agreed to represent eurovision for UK, she was in the 80's famous in usa,spain,portugal,greece...germany.... your right, she came out of retirement too do eurovision/ but so did the old guy in the previous UK 2012 entry, as he too was famous in the 70's.... maybe the BBC wanted to do oldtimer hits or those who were famous for singing in the past**....
I need to say you that Spain is a multicultural country, there is a region called Galicia that has celtic roots so, Spain is not only Flamenco, Ballads and (Latin Music). It also has celtic music, for example.
Euphoria is my all time favourite eurovision song, 2nd is beautiful mess. Fan from the philippines... but in 2013, i remember rooting for azerbaijan....
RObin was NOT the best song that year AT ALL. Much like Frans in 2016, it was a bunch of little girls and their fast thumbs/lemming voting that allowed him to win.
During the final they had a big screen in center of Malmö, where we watched it and drank wine. My friends and I where all wearing glittery clothes that easily blew in the wind. 🤣
Yeah this year was... There. I can see how Only teardrops won. Kinda stood out and got stuck in the head the most. 2016 is my favourite. Especially cause Sweden hosted again. I'm pretty sure I know like 95% of songs
The Icelandic song is about a loved one helping him overcome anything. "I have a life because of you, when the wind blows in my face I'll climb a mountain because of you", roughly translated. Mind you I don't think the beauty of the song would translate well, but then again I am Icelandic so that makes sense. :) I do think they did a poor job of visuals in the final though. Even with the song being in Icelandic, they could have added visuals in the background that aided with people understanding the song. Producers here are just so worried about "taking attention away from the singer" that we end up with dull visuals and that's half the competition. Anyway, I'll stop ranting now.
My personal opinion, the song and the staging were perfection. It was my ultimate favorite that year, i still listen to it.. Europe didn't know what to do with good songs i guess, lol, because it happened every year! They always had at least one underrated song...
Not entirelly sure how it's handled nowadays, but hearing impared people had a separate Eurovision channel where whole concert used to be translated into sign language (countries had their own translators). Whole song = songs too
ruclips.net/video/S0OeBrQBPNc/видео.html you have to see this guy even if you do not understand the language, best one of all times when it comes sign language.
Great reaction. I think our bonnie Tyler was on the razz the night before not the best vocals ( though I think several struggled). My favourites were spain, Malta, Denmark, Belarus,Hungary,Germany,Iceland,Greece but I wanted Ukraine to win.
the Porto region of Portugal (that name is a portmanteau in a sense: Porto/Galicia) along with entire northern coast of SPain over to Pais Vasco is Celtic... another example of the Celts being pushed to the farthest western edges of Europe
I remember talking about the then upcoming Eurovision with my mother and my brother's dad in 2013. I made a comment saying we (the UK) weren't going to win, my mother got all defensive asking "What's wrong with Bonnie Tyler?", and my brother's dad turned round and said "She may of been good in the 80's, but hearing that song the other day, i've heard frogs sing better than her". I think that's the best way I could ever describe her performance.
well the cascada girl was the same and she is not that old i guess for cascada it was the problem that it was not on the same level was everytime we touch or evercuade the danceflor it really was a meh song and bonnie tyler well beside her voice being a bit older and maybe out of practice the song was also compleatly diffrent from waht shes known for if she wrote it her self then thats cause the charachter and idears of every human change with the ange but still it was not suiting her imagine miley cyrus with her destroyed voice would choose to sing disney pop instad of rock that wouldent sound right
Germany was Cascada a EDM trio they still make music till this day not mainstream but they had at that time hits like Evacuate the Dancefloor(2009) and Glorious(2006) were there big hits but they still were relevant in Germany and the Benelux at that time. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cascada_discography
I love how the Finish song got so much hate from media for being sexist, so they added the girls kissing at the end to show that it was not about a man. As if that made the message any better, haha!
I know you're American but it's not that hard to do some research. Sign language from the beginning is REALLY important for Sweden. Swedish Sign Language (Svenskt teckenspråk or SSL) is the sign language used in Sweden. It is recognized by the Swedish government as the country's official sign language, and hearing parents of deaf children are required to learn it.
Only two off them are amarican and they made the commentarryon the fly there was no preperation and the european in the group even forgot about that part so if you dont remember it there is no way you would google it before starting the recording right? and it also is no common knowledge either only if you are really into swedish culture or sign languages there might be a chance you know
that epic story of the Caterpillar..... and then the main logo has the colors of every EBU member in it.. I dont know who designed that logo, but it will always be my very favorite one
You're my favorite esc related channel thanks to Lauren and Mike who are just amazing haha. So, next up is 2014, huh, the year with the bad sound quality even in the grand final that was uploaded on November 2019 (though it's a bit better than what it was). I know it's not possible but there are a lot of gems that were lost in semi finals mainly because they weren't mainstream or just who knows, like Bulgaria 2013 and both Albania 2011 and 2013. I know it's not possible for them to watch them now buuut maybe you can show them the NQs of a year in future videos? If they're not tired of ESC by then haha.
Anouk, absolutely amazing. Krista from Finlandnis actually expecting her first child with her boyfriend. Thanks for your hard work Alex, really appreciated 😎
I work at the Arena they were in. And yes you can drink but only in the bars outside the arenaroom. You are no allowd to have a drink in the big arenaroom.
Yeah, bagpipes are part of the traditional music from the northwestern regions of Spain. But, to be honest, I never understood that weird mix of North tradition with South pop that El Sueño De Morfeo did. It kinda works, but not completely
The Swedish entry was not the most popular here. The song that got the most votes was “Heartbreak hotel” by YOHIO. He’s a Japanese inspired singer who was massively popular but the juries didn’t vote for him because he was less commercial.
Can you do a interval act reaction video, like choose the top 10 - 15 interval acts of all time and have Mike and Lauren react to them, the riverdance one from Ireland, the flashmob from Norway, the really cool one from Russia, Love Love Peace Peace from Sweden, could be really fun
As asturian (the spanish region where the group ESDM are) I have to say that our traditional music is celtic, 'cause the north of Spain was celtic before the romans and we keep some of that ancient traditions until nowadays... Spain has a lot of different cultures and types of music inside, not only flamenco and latin 😉
in the north of spain we also have gaelic music thats why the spanish entry sounded irish because of the instrumental but its something we also have in here (I didn't know how to explain it in the right way in e glish bit I hope you can understand what I mean)
Great reacts with this amazing year. Marry me of Krista Siegfrids!! So catchy and Love Kills of Roberto Bellarosa is a good song really, i love it. Then we have Marco Mengoni (😍😍😍), Azerbaijan and Norway (👌).
In that _ding dong marry me_-song it wasn't her girlfriend Krista kissed, they just wanted to shock ultra conservatives and actually that part wasn't shown in some countries at all, since back then it was too much...
did you not even watch the video? As he even mentions that the opening ceremony for the grand final is not that great so we'll watch the opening segment from semi final 1
Fun fact... the name of the Icelandic song "Ég á líf" sounds really close to Russian phrase "Ехал лифт" ("The elevator was going", or something like that). That was a name Russian ESC fans used for this song.
Something similar was going on in Germany, "Kedvesem" the hungarian entry, sounded so much like "Geldwäsche" (money laundry). Geldwäsche even trended on Twitter.
I enjoyed it also, though I was unfamiliar with Contratenors at the time. It turns out Cesar was rather a large ass to people at ESC though. Living up to the worst parts of the Diva stereotype.
Thanks for liking our entry (Belgium) so much! :D I see 2013 as our starting point for our big comeback :p 2018 and 2019 were meh but we're going to do well again next year I'm sure.
Margaret Berger, the norwegian woman was 27 or 28 at this time, she was born in 1985 Fun fact, in the national finals, the dress didn't even have that split. It was tight...
its an Irish-American stereotype.... remember the big deal about St Patirck's Day is ONLY because of Irish-american immigrants creating a party. Just like CInco de Mayo is a MUCH bigger deal in the USA than in Mexico
You are always welcome to chill around here in Aarhus (second largest city in Denmark). For Laurens Denmark-loving hearts sake. You guys just hit me up. 🇩🇰✌🏻
The group from Spain was from Asturias, a region in the north with a Celtic past. The bagpipe is a traditional Celtic instrument and so it is very popular and significant in northern Spain. It is true that it is often related to Ireland and Scotland but it actually has more to do with Celtic culture. I recommend you all to listen to "Busindre Reel" a song by Hevia (an Asturian bagpiper), you will sure like it. Greetings from Asturias (Spain)
it was my very first year of finding a way to watch it (delayed) online. I feel 100% in love with Aliona Moon and "O Mie". It actually inspired me to learn some Romanian. I've made connection with her on Twitter back then wnd now we have been Facebook freind for about 5 years (along with Pasha Parfeny, the composer [Moldova 2012 singer] and Yulian Scutaru, the lyricist - and now Pasha's wife).
At that point it was 11PM and it came after all the hyped songs in the end of the show. As Lauren said, if they watched it in order maybe they had different thoughts about it...
Greek song was my absolute favourite, ska music, Greek language, energy, fun.
Me too - I love the bleep out of Alcohol is Free!!!
There are certain parts of Spain (spercially in the Northeast) with Celtic culture/History/folklore like Galicia or Asturias. The Spanish group is from Asturias, so that's the reason why you think it sounds celtic. Spain is very diverse and every region has its own characteristics.
Northwest* but well explained. Spain has the richest and most diverse culture
Bitch expensive?
I’m offended
so alcohol is not free
The ethnic music in the north of Spain is similar to the Irish. It is celtic music too.
Galicia and Asturias are historically Celtic cultures, though the native Celtic language died out way back in the era of the Reconquista. We all know that Isabella and Ferdinand were some vicious people, and they probably made sure to stamp anything like that out while forcibly reuniting Spain.

@@ZakhadWOW yes ireland and spain are similar because celts who ruled ireland originated from northern spain
Soooo tired of some kind of comments...
Both ABBA and Celine Dion saw their careers take off after winning Eurovision
Unlike Madonna
To answer the question "was there any significance to the sign languages', the day the finale was held it was also international sign language day :-)

imagine miley cyrus with her destroyed voice would choose to sing disney pop instad of rock that wouldent sound right
Glad you liked our song from Denmark 🥰
Only two off them are amarican and they made the commentarryon the fly there was no preperation and the european in the group even forgot about that part so if you dont remember it there is no way you would google it before starting the recording right?
and it also is no common knowledge either
only if you are really into swedish culture or sign languages there might be a chance you know
And I’m european and I didnt even know this too. So calm down, not everyone knows everything about every country.
I honestly love the intro its so clean
that epic story of the Caterpillar..... and then the main logo has the colors of every EBU member in it.. I dont know who designed that logo, but it will always be my very favorite one
Denmark were deserving winners, the rest of my top 5 are Sweden, Belgium, Russia and Greece
Meeeen, I was totally obsessed with "Alcohol is free"!
You are awesome guys, really enjoy watching you!
Love from Greece
In the case of Cezar they technically get the video of Freddie Mercury's "Made In Heaven" and rebooted that in a minimalist Dracula-style I think
Cant wait to see their reaction tonesc 2014, its such an amazing year!
Anouk, absolutely amazing. Krista from Finlandnis actually expecting her first child with her boyfriend. Thanks for your hard work Alex, really appreciated 😎
So, he didn't actually marry her in the end 😅
Thanks a lot for this, it was fun to watch!
Can you do a interval act reaction video, like choose the top 10 - 15 interval acts of all time and have Mike and Lauren react to them, the riverdance one from Ireland, the flashmob from Norway, the really cool one from Russia, Love Love Peace Peace from Sweden, could be really fun
you should show the reaction to the voting part, the best part in the eurovision!
which f-word did he say at 41:15 🤨⁉️🔎
I am waiting for the following reactions.. From 2014 it's starting to be interesting😋
Yay great video. i was waiting for this one :D
in the north of spain we also have gaelic music thats why the spanish entry sounded irish because of the instrumental but its something we also have in here (I didn't know how to explain it in the right way in e glish bit I hope you can understand what I mean)
Loved the video and the reactions.
Did you show them the Opening of the first Semi-Final? Please, this is the best part, I demand their reactions on it :D
did you not even watch the video? As he even mentions that the opening ceremony for the grand final is not that great so we'll watch the opening segment from semi final 1
@@MrThedwp well, he asked this 2 days before the premier of the video..
@@ZiaHere. ah so I (now) see. My bad
Fun fact... the name of the Icelandic song "Ég á líf" sounds really close to Russian phrase "Ехал лифт" ("The elevator was going", or something like that). That was a name Russian ESC fans used for this song.
Something similar was going on in Germany, "Kedvesem" the hungarian entry, sounded so much like "Geldwäsche" (money laundry).
Geldwäsche even trended on Twitter.
God, Romania was my absolute favourite in 2013, not even kidding in the slightest.
I enjoyed it also, though I was unfamiliar with Contratenors at the time. It turns out Cesar was rather a large ass to people at ESC though. Living up to the worst parts of the Diva stereotype.
For this opening some of the kids performed in sign language! I remember that and I didn't understand it until 3 years later
Thanks for liking our entry (Belgium) so much! :D I see 2013 as our starting point for our big comeback :p 2018 and 2019 were meh but we're going to do well again next year I'm sure.
Yes Mike. They ARE like the Greek Dropkick Murphys. I got the reference!
Mike comment on Russia was briliant
Why do we have to wait this loooong... :)
because of Lauren
Margaret Berger, the norwegian woman was 27 or 28 at this time, she was born in 1985
Fun fact, in the national finals, the dress didn't even have that split. It was tight...
I'm romanian and I didn't knew that "dracula thing ,song " existed 😆
Hahaha... the only way to explain it!!!
I got Mike's Dropkick Murphy's reference (to Greece) and I kind of agree 'cause both bands are in this folk punk ska-ish genre
Excited for 2015-2018. My era of Eurovision. 😍
Krista's backing vocalist was not her (to be) wife, they kissed to support Finland legalizing gay marriage in 2013
I can’t believe how weak this year was (half of it at least). I still listen to Marco Mengoni!
YAY MIKE AND LAUREN!
As an Irishman i can confirm we do not say top of the morning to you!😂
its an Irish-American stereotype.... remember the big deal about St Patirck's Day is ONLY because of Irish-american immigrants creating a party. Just like CInco de Mayo is a MUCH bigger deal in the USA than in Mexico
Agreed! If you said this in Ireland you would get shot.....a dirty look.
Antonia Iacobescu a Romanian-American singer always says that in her Insta stories so I assumed that this is an American thing. lol
You are always welcome to chill around here in Aarhus (second largest city in Denmark). For Laurens Denmark-loving hearts sake. You guys just hit me up. 🇩🇰✌🏻
40:00 For Romania...
Can't wait to see them react to Conchita XD
The group from Spain was from Asturias, a region in the north with a Celtic past. The bagpipe is a traditional Celtic instrument and so it is very popular and significant in northern Spain. It is true that it is often related to Ireland and Scotland but it actually has more to do with Celtic culture. I recommend you all to listen to "Busindre Reel" a song by Hevia (an Asturian bagpiper), you will sure like it.
Greetings from Asturias (Spain)
ruclips.net/video/qUA3sdyZ_Pw/видео.html this is the link to the video clip of "Busindre Reel", which was filmed in Asturias.
Timestap for denmark’s song 51:02 - 53:01
2013 was my least favourite of the 2010s😅
it was my very first year of finding a way to watch it (delayed) online.
Shawn Putnam Hihihi, salutări! Aliona finished 4th in the Voice of Romania many years ago.
Shawn Putnam Hihihi, salutări! Aliona finished 4th in the Voice of Romania many years ago.
Noo, it’s good
Yawning at Birds 😂 I love it though
At that point it was 11PM and it came after all the hyped songs in the end of the show. As Lauren said, if they watched it in order maybe they had different thoughts about it...
I'm really loving these videos.
Mike saying that he won't feel bad making fun of kids is a MOOD
Fun fact: I know the giant in the Ukraine act. Never thought I'd say that about anyone in Eurovision! It was a bit surreal.
