    1. As of 2023, Tom Ford himself stopped being actively associated with Tom Ford Beauty and it is now just being run by Estee Lauder personnel. So that would correspond with the time that you saw the creativity leave the brand. (Bobbi Brown feels like a ghost town to me since BB herself left it as well.). 2. TF Fiber Brow Gel had Teflon in it and I do think that most companies are trying to remove that from all their products. So maybe they are still supposedly working on another formulation that would be just as good that doesn't have that in it. 3. I suppose that the main reason that all fragrance companies change the ingredients in their beloved scents and then try to pass them off as unchanged is because the price of the ingredients has gone up. My guess is that maybe the original Guerlain fragrance had some natural essential oils in it and that they decided to abandon that. Which makes me kind of want to do a smell comparison myself, actually. I'm enjoying your Mishmas videos, btw!

The first maybe half dozen of the Pat McGrath Mothership palettes contain Teflon too. So I imagine that they are just selling off their existing inventory and then that will be that.

And I think part of the reason all the powder products are being reformulated is to get rid of talc. But, I agree that so much makeup in the luxury sphere has become so boring and directionless. I’m your age Michelle and I remember the excitement that was there when the pros launched their lines. It was revolutionary!

I'm an R&D chemist and I've formulated for many big brands over the decades and I can tell you exactly what's going on. Regulations, supply issues, or cost cutting. R&D and regulatory are saying we have no other choice and marketing is tearing their hair out. So you will NEVER get your old formulations back.

    • @Lighthouse1852
      @Lighthouse1852 Месяц назад +30

I'm sure regulations, supply chain and costs do play a role, but they can't be the whole story. For example, the impact of a higher pigment cost on a $90 eyeshadow quad is negligible on such a high margin product. They could just raise prices - oh wait, they did! Even as they cut quality.
Second, given how few consumers were actually clamoring for it, it's hard to see the so-called "clean beauty" changes as anything more than an opportunity to reduce costs and build in automatic demand for rapid repurchases because products would go rancid so quickly. Preservative-free products won't last 8+ years the way old Chanel blushes have. What surprised me is how willing the market has been to "invest" in perishable makeup that most consumers can't possibly use up within its shorter shelf life. It's like "investing" in bananas.
Third, if supply problems, costs and regs were the reason, how are Urban Decay, MUFE, Persona, Victoria Beckham, Chanel, and many others have for several years produced better eyeliners than Hermes launched at a 2-3x higher price?

Guerlain got a new creative director a couple of years ago that wanted to modernize the scent and formula. Basically she wanted to put her stamp on it. She blew it big time IMO. I don't own the new one and will not buy it. It is horrible. Powder changes started with that LaMer powder that everyone LOVED. Then Chanel, and Givenchy changed. When Chanel added coconut oil to the reformulated cream bronzer that did it for me. I do not put coconut oil on my face. Instant breakouts occur and I'm 72!

You are spot on. Michelle! “Clean” beauty trend ruined the luxury makeup. The quality is very bad and the life span is much shorter. But is not only about the clean beauty trend. They try to cut costs and use cheap ingredients in order to increase the profit in a record time. Also some of them (ex.: Armani bronzers) are made in China. And on top of that the prices are higher every year. They think that people will buy no matter what but I doubt. In the last 2-3 years the limited editions are available much longer than before.
In my opinion I think influencers can help with videos like this one. But the problem is the companies send free products and the reviews are more advertising than a real opinion and many people are influenced to buy because everything is “wow”, “excellent quality” and so on. Recently I saw a review (on RUclips) of the new reformulated blushes from Chanel and the “opinion” was like “they are a hundred times better than previous and the quality is very good”. And people are happy and buy using affiliate links.
Anyway I hope people will be more selective with makeup products and influencers as well.
    Thanks for sharing! 🙂

    4) Bite Beauty - Company had to shut down when they turned vegan. Their lip mask was my holy grail. Had to buy up so many of the lip masks in ebay. Last time I looked, the original lip mask is going for more than $100 for a tube. Crazy.

Tom Ford, the designer, had sold his line few years ago for a very nice price. I noticed my favorite stick foundation was discontinued. One of countless times a company has changed ownership and their excellent products are discontinued or reformulated into something that is quite obnoxious.
I think Estée Lauder and the companies are now seeing a change in the atmosphere of beauty. I think they’re discontinuing legacy formulas because they see more trends that attract clients in a different way and they’re not interested or even know about these better formulas. So they figure why are we spending money when we can cut costs and go with whatever the new market wants.

@@barbarasmith6229...you betcha!!! They see the older customer as a "dying" demographic and they are putting pretty much all their focus on how do they capture younger customers and keep them loyal throughout their lifetime, sadly those of us 45/50 +++ they just do not really care much about what we think or want, it's all about figuring out how brands like the "department store" brands many younger generations see as their "mom's" makeup, this is a huge uphill battle for all of the major department store brands like, Dior, Estee Lauder, Lancome, Schiesdo, clinique, Guerlain, Givenchy, chanel etc. So the focus of the big major parent companies that own all the smaller brands, are pushing their newer acquired brands like LVMH buying part of Fenty, and it owns Sephora which gives them a very good world wide grasp in the new and upcoming beauty brands.

It was so lovely and light and just a one and done for the days I wanted to just get out of the door. Of course, they discontinued it! Said they were reformulating but that was well over a year ago!

I love the brutal honest Michele version!♥ Thank you for expressing loud and clear our indignation regarding big brands, their high prices and their endless meaningless launches! It is disgusting to see that, increasingly, luxury stores are much more concerned with following trends to sell more and more, with the aim of making formulas even cheaper and leaving us to suffer the lack of quality.

I’m still in grief over the loss of the Lancôme Absolute powder in Peche. I used it with the Sonia G Buffer Pro and it was magical as a finishing powder. I haven’t found anything that can come close to it.😢

Gonna throw Nars under the bus too: they/he reformulated their lip and eye pencils so one each of my faves is no longer a “wooden” pencil, but rather the pseudo-creamy ones that you can’t sharpen very well no matter what sharpener you use. Both texture and color are different and aren’t the same anymore. I have mostly switched to MUFE for lip and eye, and ABH for lip. I particularly like the ABH ones, so I’m expecting them to change that too! I used to laugh at my mother who’d buy her makeup in bulk, like she was warehousing them for a nuclear attack. Now I get it.

    • @lindalee8793

I really feel your pain with these, especially the Dior highlighter replacements. They just aren't made the same. Only one product I found comes close after a lot of digging- strangely, it's from Revlon! That brand sells a highlighter series called Skin Lights and the formula applies as close as I can see to Dior's OG formula on the cheeks. The pans are pressed so they look like snake scales and I use the shade Daybreak Glimmer. Hope this helps! I could listen to your makeup and fashion opinions for hours (and I do!). Thanks for compiling so much into one video.

Great video, Michele! Absolutely agree. I have same issues with Dior. Constantly changing and discontinuing their products. I used to use my favorite Air serum foundation until it got discontinued and replaced by bad foundations in a plastic bottle. So I switched to Armani luminous silk. Same with creams, I purchased refillable only to find out that they discontinued refills. Brands push us to buy elsewhere. I don’t get it 🤷‍♀️

Yay Michele, finally someone telling it like it is. I'm sure big brands will be paying attention to you. I agree with everything you said.
Just wanted to add my take the dior packaging for the highlighter. we pay a lot of money, with the silver quilted packaging, at least it showed elegance and was
obvious it was dior. What's with the flat bland packaging? Boring! Seems to me that dior has kind of copied the chanel with just the cd now?
I want the flashy packaging back! i want to admire the flashing packaging when i'm using it! Guerlain meteorites, the scent was the best part of the experience of using it!!! Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr.

Oh I love a good rant! Gotta hold these companies accountable in my opinion. If they want our money, there's no excuse for bad manufacturing or reformations without warrant. Also Michele, if you love a sophisticated violet scent that's a nice blend, you should try Penhaligon's Artemesia perfume! It's got a strong note of violet, but it's also a little woody too. Very feminine!

Thank-goodness that I'd held off from treating myself to the new Meteorites for these Holidays!. I still have the original version. What's more, you were the one who taught me how to use it for their best effect. I'd been using Prisme Libre for the past decade, and can't comprehend their reformulation. What's next?. Armani reformulating Luminous Silk?. Ugh. Clearly, there are forces at play that us consumers are oblivious to. Loyalty, quality, and innovation used to mean something in this space. Here's hoping that 'some' luxury beauty houses re-launch their brains, again, in 2025. Thoroughly enjoying Mishmas from you. It's become a welcomed staple in my Holiday routine.

Tom Ford Beauty's death began when they killed Cocoa Mirage and that entire line of amazing color stories in their quads...then it was one random mediocre release after the next all in beigey pinks. I have that big TM palette in the purple and it is DIVINE and so luxurious...I will keep it forever! It was their last hurrah. I agree, it feels like their ship has had no captain for yearrrrsssss. They need a true Creative Director with vision because EL has tossed this once amazing brand in their corporate factory. No more TF for me. I have loads of Burberry single eyeshadows from their original line - great grunge silver packaging and interesting colors, smooth formula...bygone era..they're searching for a high luxury Chanel like identity but i dont think they've found it.

It's absolutely maddening when you fall in love with a product and they either reformulate it, or discontinue it altogether. It's all about cutting costs. Less quality ingredients means more revenue for the cosmetic companies.
My example, Donna Karan's Chaos Perfume. It was my signature scent for 10 years. I also got compliments on it. It lasted all day. It got harder and harder to find. Then it was gone. I contacted the company, to no avail. I started buying it up on Ebay. I drew the line when it went over the $600 threshold. I was done. A few years back, and friend ordered the perfume oil from England for a birthday gift. I was in heaven. It's used up, never to be found again. Now 40 perfumes later, I still can't land on my signature scent. So frustrating. I feel your pain. 😢😡😯

What a great video. I totally agree with you. Oh that Chanel eyeshadow palette. Poor decision that they haven't made it permanent. I bought three of the Chanel blush 2021 reformulation and promptly threw them out. They were a chalky flat dull mess. Drug store blush is better. I took a chance and bought 4 of the new powder blushes (Malice, Rose Bronze, Rose Initial and Pink Explosion) and I will say the ones I purchased are good and slightly blurring. The colors are more pigmented and not quite the same tone (example- Malice used to be warm coral, but now it is definitely a pink). They went on smoothly. The shimmers are very very subtle. I did not try any matte colors. And no, they are not the lovely baked old formula. Closest comparison to texture to what I own would be my Tom Ford Shade and Illuminate Blush duos. A great easy everyday blush but nothing special or magical like the original formula.

I agree on the powders but the new Guerlain & Givenchy remind me of the Makeup Forever HD skin twist & light monstrosity - since all 3 companies are under the LVMH umbrella perhaps it is simply a decision to utilize certain glittery ingredients across the board.... I hope Dior doesn't become the next victim of this as you say "incorrect" path. 🙏

You are absolutely correct about these beauty companies. I buy luxury brands from time to time, Pat McGrath was one I would purchase however in the past few years her line has not inspired me. Chanel, a bit overrated in my humble opinion, their products do not feel luxurious to me anymore, Armani same thing. To me these beauty products are an investment, they are expensive and should perform as such, or are we just paying for the name and the packaging? Anyway, I can go on with the RANT, but I won't, you did a great job doing that and was funny I might add. 🤣❤💋

I'm so with you on all accounts, especially Guerlain. They must, absolutely must bring back the old formula, although I like the new #1 shade. Also, why did they stop doing the holiday limited edition ones? Chanel blushes... definitely bring back the old formula.. and why did they stop making the original satin lipsticks? The original Burberry... they must bring back. Personally, I don't understand why there isn't much mat eyeshadows anymore and why most eyeliners are waterproof. It seems that proper variety is not available anymore. I feel that the magic has gone (for me, a long time ago)!
This was a very good rant and spot on. Thank you. 💕💕💕💕
