- How to Grow & Harvest Broccoli
G'Day Folks. Broccoli would have to be one of my favourite plants to grow here in our patch. It can be a bit tricky to know when it's time to harvest their tasty heads so have included a quick explanation at the start of this clip.
After that we get stuck into how to grow broccoli so you get the chance to pick some for yourself.
Hope you enjoyed the clip & your gardens are booming. 🌱🌱
Cheers all.

Hi Rob. What variety are you growing in this video?
I could watch you harvest for hours-it’s so calming.

Can I ask where about in Aussie? I watch self sufficient me and he’s in QLD.
Whoops, didn’t get far enough into the video. Lol

Glad it was helpful Doofy. 👍😁

@Selfsufficientme is a much larger gardening focused channel Ursula. I've moved onto aquaponics for now due to pulling most of our soil beds up when we renovated the house. Mark is also in SE QLD but has AWESOME content.
You are a legendary bloke mate, your help goes a long way. Thank you for the extra nuggets of information that you always manage to chuck into your video.

You have a very positive energy! I've gotten into the habit of leaving snarky criticisms on every other video I watch, but just can't bring myself to do that in this case! Gardens are a fine place to spend one's life.

Very useful information. Thanks Rob. Didn't realize how big these plants really get
It can really cause issues in small beds with mildew & aphids when they're crowded in I've found. Probably should have mentioned that in the video. 😉

I've been harvesting Broccoli in Mount Isa for the last few months. Up here the climate is not realy suited for them due to the heat, but that just means you harvest a smaller head as they go to flower quick. I also trim the leaves and slice up and boil like cabbage.

I didn't know the side shoots could grow so big! I want to try container gardening this year with 5 gal grow bags. I really want to put more than 1 in a pot tho since I'm on a budget, have limited space, and want to grow more plants than broccoli
They may still grow well for you as long as you can keep them well-fed with a good compost/fertaliser Cymba.

In Melbourne, we plant ours at the end of Autumn and then they're ready just before Spring. Frost doesn't phase them
Same in Canberra. Usually ready late winter early spring, with side heads produced throughout early spring. Love to grow cabbage, buk choy and broccoli over winter because you can't grow much else!
The one plant i want to grow on my new place.
Definitely one of our favourites here OBK. 👍 Where are you moving to?

I live in the states in North Carolina.I live in the city right now in a rental and its pretty strict and i can't really do a whole lot.The property i bought is about and 11/3 acre.about the size of an American football field including the end zones. The problem i'm having is that the property is within a mile of the city limits and i have to go with the city zoning laws.I'm in the process of having it rezoned and a variance done. The property had a Manufactured home on it before but it burned a few years ago. There is power, well and septic in place and i thought all i have to do is put another one on it.?NO That is why i have to jump through hoops and pay a bunch of money to get things changed. .I've been watching the videos you post for years I just find the videos you post very interesting.and i want to try and possibly fail but i want to try and see what I can do. I know I'm not alone here with you're subscribers.
Very cool Rob. Your broccoli looks great my friend!

pickerick1 Thanks Rick. I never think I've planted enough until the side shoots start to form.
Cheers mate
Huh! Thanks for educating me on broccoli. Certainly makes you think about those you get from supermarkets, noticed they are gradually getting smaller (harvesting early due to demand?) same with cauliflower, mostly leaves and a very small head here in uk
Have never managed to get a cauliflow to produce much more than 50mm/2" secondary head here & that only happened once. We take the plant out once the main head comes off.
Cheers S W. 👍
Awesome video. Thank you
Cheers Beverley. 👍🥦
Beautiful broccoli and great tips, Rob! I need to try growing some in our front yard garden too.
Am glad you enjoyed it Patrick. Would be just about time for you to start sowing yours out now isn't it?

Very helpful info👍🏼
If you want to eat the leaves, as you would kale, remove the leaves in the early morning or after sundown....there is a sour essence that flows up into the leaves to protect themselves from the sun....and we were very pleased with our FIRST try....so much grew that we had to share the first crop with neighbors !! .....and are blessed with a cool...all year...climate !!
Thanks for mentioning that BFA. 👍 I know that most market gardens will only pick certain crops early in the day for that reason.

Feeding brocolli very high nitrogen feed works absolute wonders, this year i fed with like 15-0-2 and it absolutely exploded, phosphorus is usually present enough in soil to be a none issue for brocoli as it is very hardy and just needs nitrogen i find. Edit* did i mention the fertilizer doubles as road salt in the winter for ice? Not the best for the environment using fertilizer salts like that though.
We have a few organic chicken based fertilisers here that cover all their needs. 👍 Am looking forward to setting up some new beds & getting this season broccoli started in a few months time.
Cheers. 👍
Very informative, thx

Young Broccoli leaves are awesome stir fry + they are bitter = free iodine! If you see this, give it a try !!! 😊😊😊😊😊😊
I love them in a Chinese style mince & fermented bean stirfry Jordan. Very tasty indeed.
@@RobsAquaponics - :)
Thank you for the tips. What's the easiest way to start broccoli plants? I never grew up before and I want to try
Hi Walt. I sow them in small pots first. The post are kept slightly moist until the seeds germinate then I give them a light water once a day. I like to transplant them out once they have about 3 sets of leaves.
Hope that helps some.
Wow I will do that too
Need to plant mine earlier, never had much luck before....

Thanks Tisha. Hope to be posting many more gardening videos once we get settled in on our new farm.

Great video! Thank you! I'ma newbie gardener in South Africa and I got free seeds so I planted them end September not knowing they're a cool season veg. They're growing really well and one is already almost 30cm in diameter. What's going to happen when it gets really hot here in the next month or so? I'm so proud of my plants, my babies. Lol. I don't want them to die!
You could try adding some shade over them Jolene & making sure they stay well hydrated. 👍
You can also eat the leaves so that's always an option if the heads don't form. I fond the younger leaves are better for salads.
Hope it doesn't come to that & you get some decent sized heads from them.
Cheers.
@@RobsAquaponics thank you so much for replying!! That is a good idea. I need to put up umbrellas. lol. I've never eaten broccoli leaves so that could be interesting!
Great ideas about the shooters I like the stem.;-)
Using it in stir fries & salads =is my favourite way to use the stem Dave. 👍 Better than the heads I think. 😉
Cheers mate.
Question, What type of broccoli seeds is best suited for the Caribbean climates but also produces large heads ??? Very Informative videos thanks soo much for sharing your knowledge :)
I think the best bet would be to ask your local seed supplier what varieties they would recommend. I have seen a few F1 hybrids that are recommended for warmer climates. "Green Magic" is one F1 that we can get here that is recommended for our warmer climate here.
Sorry I couldn't be of much help. Hope you find a good variety to try out.
Love your broccoli...hoping my ones will be like yours...im in Perth W.A and having trouble with caterpillars and im on caterpillar patrol most nights...lol
Any tips to deal with these pesky critters?
I've found netting to be the best way to keep them out Serge.
I also spray any that are exposed with a natural bacteria based caterpillar killer called "Nurtures Way Dipel". The bacteria in it gets into the guts of the grub & kills it fairly fast. It's animal, bird, reptile, amphibian & fish friendly to use as well so safe for you if you have an aquaponics system.
Hope that helps some.
This Vid is amazing
I'm glad it helped you out some.
Cheers & happy Growing. 🥦🥦🥦
Great in stir fries after they flower to!
Like your videos better than any other so far.love your garden too.what do you have for growing footage in your garden ?
Hi Jackie & sorry I missed your comment.
We used to have over 322ft² + random wicking barrels & root pouches.
Over the past 2 years we've retired a lot of beds for a few different reasons so only have about 200ft² with a lot of perennials growing in the beds.
That's not including the aquaponics BTW.
We'll be removing some more beds soon as we would like to change the garden around a bit & will probably expanding the aquaponics a bit more.
Cheers & happy growing. 🌱🌱🌱
Rob.
Wonderful video!
Thanks Rex & Sky.
Happy growing.
Good
Thanks mate. ... question .... I've been trimming some of the leaves, does this help in the development of the head?
I'm not sure if it does but we do it to add them to meals. We will wait before the main head is harvested before doing so.
I grow brócolis with beans ,beans help brócolis with nitrogen :)
Thy'd love that Michelle as they're heavy feeders.👍

Good looking Broccoli, new supporter here. I am starting a vegie garden tonight .SEQ too
Thanks 47 Ag Studios.
We're out at Ipswich if that helps put our garden & climate in perspective.
Hope it grows well for you.
Thank you, I'm on the gold coast so should be a very similar climate
Thanks Rob. I'm in SE Qld also. First time attempt with seeds and WOW. I planted seeds early May but just about ready for first harvest. Does removing lower leaves on plant help boost the plant above? Also, have steamed some large leaves which nice but a bit bitter so will try with the smaller next time.
Nice one Paul. I haven't found removing them helps much so tend to leave them on. If the bed is too crowded I may remove a few just to help with airflow which helps stop mildew issues & removes hiding spots for pests like aphids.
Hope you get a great harvest from them Paul. 👍👍
NIce video Rob! On average how many broccoli heads do you get per plant?
Only one large main head but then loads of smaller ones. I have had a few that produce side shoots almost as large as the main head though. 👍
Cheers.
Good work Rob..I had some beautiful heads last week ..around 7.. this week gone..At first i thought neighbours have helped themselves but looks like they might have been chewed off. I have seen a couple of possums on power lines out front of house..Do you think they could be the culprits..(Brissie)
I know folks that have lost them to rats too mate so might pay for you to look around for rat scat under the plants to see if there's any evidence.
Hope you catch the culprit.
thanks Rob!
No problem Montana.
Cheers & have a top one.
I like to boil the tender young leaves and eat them with rice. Adding a little salt and butter.
We use them mainly in salads & stir fries here.
Cheers.
I followed the advice , I got some nice great big heads however they were infested with green worms and a furry grey growth so I think this problem should have been discussed .
Many places around the world will have different pests. I will look at re working this video & including some controls. 👍
For caterpillars I would suggest using a BT (Bacillus thuringiensis) bacterial style control. Is safe for all animals as it targets the insides of caterpillars specifically.
Awesome looking side shoots Rob! Is that the calabrese?
I think it may of been Jacob. 👍
Sorry I missed your question mate.
Cheers & happy growing. 🌱
How long does it take for cow manure to be well broken down
I like to semi compost it by keeping the dry pats we get in bags & giving it as bit of a hose Ermine. If you know the cows have been fed on grass & have no worming medicines in their systems you can break up the dry pats & use them as a mulch straight away. My grandfather did that & never had any issues.
I ordered my broccoli
That soup and salad looks delicious... Will this grow in an aquaponics bed? Or is this a soil is best type of deal... My family loves broccoli and cauliflower so I'd love to be able to grow my own...
P. S. I know this is an old video, but I'm now moving through your history as fast as I can...
We've had ok success growing the broccoli in aquaponics before. I would wait until the system becomes a bit more mature & the fish put on a bit of size as broccoli can be a bit of a nutrient hog.
Hope that helps some Peter. 👍
