  • How to Grow & Harvest Broccoli
    G'Day Folks. Broccoli would have to be one of my favourite plants to grow here in our patch. It can be a bit tricky to know when it's time to harvest their tasty heads so have included a quick explanation at the start of this clip.
    After that we get stuck into how to grow broccoli so you get the chance to pick some for yourself.
    Hope you enjoyed the clip & your gardens are booming. 🌱🌱
    Cheers all.

    Feeding brocolli very high nitrogen feed works absolute wonders, this year i fed with like 15-0-2 and it absolutely exploded, phosphorus is usually present enough in soil to be a none issue for brocoli as it is very hardy and just needs nitrogen i find. Edit* did i mention the fertilizer doubles as road salt in the winter for ice? Not the best for the environment using fertilizer salts like that though.

      Hi Walt. I sow them in small pots first. The post are kept slightly moist until the seeds germinate then I give them a light water once a day. I like to transplant them out once they have about 3 sets of leaves.
      Hope that helps some.

    Great video! Thank you! I'ma newbie gardener in South Africa and I got free seeds so I planted them end September not knowing they're a cool season veg. They're growing really well and one is already almost 30cm in diameter. What's going to happen when it gets really hot here in the next month or so? I'm so proud of my plants, my babies. Lol. I don't want them to die!

    • @RobsAquaponics
      @RobsAquaponics  3 года назад

      You could try adding some shade over them Jolene & making sure they stay well hydrated. 👍
      You can also eat the leaves so that's always an option if the heads don't form. I fond the younger leaves are better for salads.
      Hope it doesn't come to that & you get some decent sized heads from them.
      Cheers.

    • @RobsAquaponics
      @RobsAquaponics  6 лет назад

      I think the best bet would be to ask your local seed supplier what varieties they would recommend. I have seen a few F1 hybrids that are recommended for warmer climates. "Green Magic" is one F1 that we can get here that is recommended for our warmer climate here.
      Sorry I couldn't be of much help. Hope you find a good variety to try out.

    Any tips to deal with these pesky critters?

    • @RobsAquaponics
      @RobsAquaponics  3 года назад

      I've found netting to be the best way to keep them out Serge.
      I also spray any that are exposed with a natural bacteria based caterpillar killer called "Nurtures Way Dipel". The bacteria in it gets into the guts of the grub & kills it fairly fast. It's animal, bird, reptile, amphibian & fish friendly to use as well so safe for you if you have an aquaponics system.
      Hope that helps some.

      Hi Jackie & sorry I missed your comment.
      We used to have over 322ft² + random wicking barrels & root pouches.
      Over the past 2 years we've retired a lot of beds for a few different reasons so only have about 200ft² with a lot of perennials growing in the beds.
      That's not including the aquaponics BTW.
      We'll be removing some more beds soon as we would like to change the garden around a bit & will probably expanding the aquaponics a bit more.
      Cheers & happy growing. 🌱🌱🌱

    Thanks Rob. I'm in SE Qld also. First time attempt with seeds and WOW. I planted seeds early May but just about ready for first harvest. Does removing lower leaves on plant help boost the plant above? Also, have steamed some large leaves which nice but a bit bitter so will try with the smaller next time.

    • @RobsAquaponics
      @RobsAquaponics  5 лет назад +2

      Nice one Paul. I haven't found removing them helps much so tend to leave them on. If the bed is too crowded I may remove a few just to help with airflow which helps stop mildew issues & removes hiding spots for pests like aphids.
      Hope you get a great harvest from them Paul. 👍👍

    Good work Rob..I had some beautiful heads last week ..around 7.. this week gone..At first i thought neighbours have helped themselves but looks like they might have been chewed off. Many places around the world will have different pests. I will look at re working this video & including some controls. 👍
      For caterpillars I would suggest using a BT (Bacillus thuringiensis) bacterial style control. Is safe for all animals as it targets the insides of caterpillars specifically.

    How long does it take for cow manure to be well broken down

    • @RobsAquaponics
      @RobsAquaponics  4 года назад

      I like to semi compost it by keeping the dry pats we get in bags & giving it as bit of a hose Ermine. If you know the cows have been fed on grass & have no worming medicines in their systems you can break up the dry pats & use them as a mulch straight away. My grandfather did that & never had any issues.

      We've had ok success growing the broccoli in aquaponics before. I would wait until the system becomes a bit more mature & the fish put on a bit of size as broccoli can be a bit of a nutrient hog.
      Hope that helps some Peter. 👍
