Hello sir, is it safe to use tempered glass with 8mm thick for 40 gallons?
If you want a 55 - skip it, and get a 75. You won't regret your choice
Do you have a good source for a 75 ?Around my area a 75 is double the price or more. I realize they cost more ( thicker glass etc.. )

I found a 65 gallon which has the footprint of a 40 breeder and the height of 55. Best of both worlds if you only have space for a 3 foot tank. Otherwise 40 breeder is much more preferable than a 55 IMHO.
I disagree, I have a 65 gallon and am switching it for a 75 because it's way too tall. My lights can't penetrate 25 inches.
I don't think there is much of an advantage in getting the 65 gallon over the 40.

@@armandoleyba1539 no, typical 55 gallons are a 48 x 12 x 21, which is 3 inches shy of a 60. a 65 is 36 x 18 x 24. 8 inches higher than a 40 breeder

40 gal breeder tank is my favorite tank. Had multiple different tanks in my life. From as small as 2 gallon to 70 gallon. My 40 breeder I had about 9 years ago was my favorite. Sold it when I moved to a neighbor who always admired it. Always regretted it as it put a years into that tank slowly adding just the right fish. Fish by fish slowly over time and live plants and wood etc. It ended up being ridiculously beautiful. With a weird mix of unique fish and invertebrates. Somehow they all gelled together. From pigmy puffers to freshwater founder to African frogs to bumble bee gobys and some Molly’s and patty’s I searched for and collected over many months. But the 40 gal breeder tank is my favorite because of all that surface area at bottom. My favorite thing is Aquascaping and planting and it gives lots of room for that. Also like weird fish that hang out at bottom a lot. Great tank for those who like me like the art of adding to a tank with different unique rocks and wood and plants and species.
Great video. Definitely a 40 breeder over a 55. I had both in the past. I also had a 60g long which was even way better. It was 48×18×17ish. I had my three goldfish in this tank.

I agree the 40 breeder is the way to go. Much more aquascaping space on the bottom.
My favorite tank I ever had and I have had a lot was my 40gal breeder tank. I love the Aquascaping and also like weird fish that like the bottom. Bumble bee goby, fresh water clams, fresh water flounders, African frogs etc and many others. You can have a ton of fun adding plants and rocks and wood etc to a 40gal breeder.
I personally would take 40 breeders over the standard 55s, but my favorite size is the 75 as it has both the big tank look that the 55 offers and the added depth of the 40 breeder. Great comparison!

I have a 65 breeder which has the same footprint as the 40 gallon. Love that tank! The extra width lets me really hardscspe it well with nice big chunks of wood and I have the height for my barbs, danios and loaches that inhabit it.
I like those too!
When I was deciding for my tank I went with a 55g. It was cheap on the $/gal sale (50% off) and I made my own lids out of glass. I wanted the dilution with having a footprint that filled the location where it would be kept. 55g is a much more picturesque display compared to a 40g. This tank is now a swarm of green tigerbarbs, co2 planted tank with Cory cats, plecos, and a red tailed shark. Needless to say I enjoy and wanted the length/height And may upgrade to a 75g when I move. I just didn't want a 40g because I couldn't pass up the affordable tank with better dilution. I wanted a larger swarm of Tigerbarbs. I couldn't imagine letting the fish swim in a shorter tank, I definitely think they'd prefer this or a 75g over a 40g. Second favorite tank size is probably the 29g, especially for the price. I'd argue the 29g should be the standard over a 10g, but that's just me. Anyways, 55g vs. 40g, I would rather have a taller tank to let the fish have a better separation of layers, swimming length (especially for fish that enjoy strong current), dilution, cost, and display qualities once set up.

Here's another vote for 18" width and 40 breeders. As I slowly add tanks to my fish garage, they are either 40B or 20L. The 48x18 seventyfive gallon is my bigger option. I had a 55g many moons ago and always thought it was such a small tank - so hard to decorate. Nice video!

Very helpful breakdown, thanks! This last week, just by chance, I came across a LFS that stocks the Marineland 53g for $1/g everyday. It has the same footprint as the 40 breeder only 4 inches higher. Seemed like a great compromise so I picked up a couple. I plan to use 53's with 40's on the same stands, in the future.

@@PrimeTimeAquatics I was thinking too that most of us wait for PetCo and PetSmart to run $1/g sales and PetCo around here only gives 50% on anything over 29g, so this ends up being the same cost as a 40 breeder on sale at petco.
I'm into aquascaping, whether it's plants, rocks, wood, or a combination of all, so the extra depth of the 40 breeder makes it more desirable in my opinion. If I were to upgrade to a four foot tank, I'd want to do a 75 gallon or larger, for the same reason of the extra depth.

Thanks for another informative video. 👍 I prefer the 40 breeder. Width, surface and bottom make it easy to maintain. I bought mine during the Petco $1/gal sale for $49.99. The "Aqueon Versa Top 36" X 18" Hinged Glass" lid was $30, so not that expensive.

Right on with the 40-gallon. I own four SeaClear 40 gallons all are freshwater. A great size for a panted tank and, of course, breeding. I love the Tetras and they love the 40-gallon size :)

I am in love with your 50 gallon lowboys, but cannot seem to locate any in Michigan. Seems like you have to drive over to Wisconsin to pick one up. Anyhow, this video was super helpful. Just picked up a 40 breeder at Petco for a dollar a gallon. Super excited to get it set up. I have a 20 long I love, but I can tell this scape will be epic and I will have more versatility stocking wise.
Wanted to finally upgrade from a 29 but not confident about going over 55 gallons yet - I looked at a 55 and a 40 gal breeder in store and really liked the aquascaping room on the 40 gal but was hoping for a larger volume tank... but after watching this and doing some more research I think the 40 gal is actually perfect for the type of aquarium I want to keep :) thanks for your insights!
The other cool thing, is technically the 40B is 47 gallons!

I also chose the 40B when I decided to go a little larger than my 20g's. My only issue was I got mine when Petco switched the Aqueon tanks for the Tetra tanks for a short while for the $1/gal sales. The more common Versa/All Glass lids do not fit this tank so it was even more of a challenge to find a lid. At the time my LFS came through with the Perfecto lid, which does fit these Tetra tanks. Recently I had to replace the lid when the hinge split and again the hunt was on. Not available this time through my LFS, I was able to finally find it on-line. So, if you decide to go for a 40B, try to get the Aqueon over the Tetra tank as I think the lid (Versa/All Glass) will be easier to find. I also like the shorter height of the 40B.

Hi Jason, I agree with you on the 40 breeder; I’ll take them all day long. I have the two pair of Eureka Red Peacocks I got from you in one all by themselves, and they are doing great. Also, I just picked up a brand new 20L with a new glass lid from the FB Market Place for $30. Perhaps a video of a comparison of that tank could be an idea for a future video. Great review. I opted for a 60 gallon breeder tank since most of my fish I like seem to inhabit mid to low water. The height is wasted space, IMO.. The 48" light was pricey, but since it will be a planted tank, it was needed. I will be building the stand. The space to aquascape is also a bonus in the breeder dimensions. Tall, thin tanks display fish well, but I think long and low will be best for my situation: tons of tetras and nano size fish..
I finished the stand with a few embellishments, I added two cross struts and used some thin sanded plywood for a bottom shelf and enclosed sides to make it more presentable in my living room. I had all of the 2x4s on hand, although they were old and not all real straight, but done it is, painted and with the new tank on it. All by my little self! Thanks again!

Thank you, this video was really helpful, here in Europe we got a lot of different sizes, I now decided to get a 3,3 foot long 16 inches wide and 20,5 inches high tank that equals to a 55 gallon tank, only 3,3 foot long but a lot of more surface area, that should be perfect for the smaller fish I have like corys and mollys! I had planned on getting a 40 breeder but picked up a used 50 g cheap 36,18,19. I love this tank a little harder to find but over all is my favorite. I'm hoping to find 2 more to change out our 45 gal and 40 gal column tank .

i agree with the 40 gallon breeder, i use mine for guppies with a fluval 407 filter with a 4 inch sand bed and a lot of plants. i put a pre filter sponge on intake for guppy fry. i keep nitrates 5ppms-0ppms. i also raise discus in 90 gallon aquariums same way with ro/di water with gh minerals added back, which i buy from germany, really good product. key for me very low nitrates, lots of babies. love your videos great information, wish we had this information 45 years ago, new hobbyist today have so much information, they just need to listen to the right people. joe h navy seabee

I'm going for corydoras so 40g and the extra surface area is preferable for me. I will probably do a 75 with Angelfish. I've also had a 55 kit and ended up replacing everything that is came with anyway. So I prefer to get the tank and the exact equipment I want.
Your geophagus surinamensis are beautiful! With the type of fish I lean towards, the 40 breeder is the tank of choice for me. Good job in your comparison.

I think I depends on the fish. I got the tall for Angel fish. I also got it for depth for aquascaping. I'm 5'2, so a step stool definitely comes into play

I’m buying a 40 Breeder for several reasons, some that you mentioned. The heavy metal desk I am putting it on isn’t long enough for the 55 gallon. I love the 18 inch depth and more bottom surface area - and I am short so prefer not to be sticking my arm all the way up to my armpit to do maintenance lol

I have a 40 gallon breeder, my mom has a 55 gallon. I definitely prefer mine, but when I do go bigger I'll probably go straight for a 75 gallon.
I've just come back into the hobby after about 15 years with no tanks. I'm really enamored with cube tanks, but am looking at 40 gallon breeder for ALL the reasons you mentioned and it's closer to a cube than the 55 is. Aqua scaping is important to me so the added depth front to back is a no brainer decision. I know there are 75s that offer a combination of everything, but I prefer smaller fish so no need to go that route. I'm not actively looking (or so I tell myself), but I'm sure I'll have a 40 by the end of the year. Now I just have to quietly plan furniture rearrangement so wife doesn't throw me into the dog house hahaha. Great comparison video...a whole lot more to consider than just the amount of water in a tank.

50% off tank sale at petco right now on their aqueon open top tanks. My advice dont get the aqueon 60 cube. I just had to return my newly purchased and set up one because the seams had bubbles that were expanding under the water pressure. Went back to exchange and all the 60 cubes on the shelf had the bubbles...
Ended up with the 75 filled with plants and a ton of smaller fish. Love it! Then I also got my 40 gallon setup yesterday hahaha. Wife is happy as could be...whew!! The 40 gallon is going to sit and cycle for a little while and it gives her time to decide on stocking choices with a little input from me since I'll be doing all maintenance. In the meantime, plants and decorations look great 👍

The stand in the store looked exceptionally weak and that is a whole bunch of water to think of all over my floor. Sounds like I may have dodged a bullet based on your review. @Steve Cox that you did! Tge stand isn't bad we thought it would be bad too but gave it a try, we super glued the dowels in and reinforced with some sturdy screws but it wasn't bad. I wish tge tank was worth it! Research it you will see the insanity! Currently deciding between a 40 breeder, 60 breeder or 75 gallon personally. No problem on the heads up! Goodluck!!!
I just “traded up” from a 29 to a 40 breeder. Seeing what I can do after 30+ years of the same tank to the deeper 40 breeder I never want to go back to a shallower tank. But then looking at standard sizes available and while I want to upgrade one more time when next I move the only way to do all if taller, wider and deeper is to go way up to something truly massive.
i have taken care of many tanks in my day i just got my first 55's when i started fish keeping again but the 40 i think is a better tank you dont need a step stool ti get your hand to the bottom of a 40 Breeder where a 55 gal some may need a step stool especially if your raising the stand off the floor with a cinder block to get the bottom tank away from the cold floor

Another words the 55 is for display in living room and 40 is for the basement fish room. After you add 2”-3” of sand and some decor there’s not much display left in the 40.
You could make the same argument for the narrow 12.5” width of the 55 gallon?
It would be great if you had a stocking video of just Lake T. African cichlids for the 40. :D

I definitely see the value in the 40 gallon aquariums and I would consider them if I where to ever breed for profit the livebearers, tetra, small catfish and small to medium sized new world cichlids I tend to keep. But I have chosen the 55 gallon aquarium because all of my tanks are personal display tanks and they ( in my opinion ) just simply look better as decor in a room.
As stated in the video items needed for setting the tanks up are much easier to locate and are at a better price point. Is a 55 gallon my favorite sized tank the answer to that would be no. I prefer 75 gallon and 125 gallon aquariums but those are not practical in some settings and are leaning towards the more expensive side of the hobby for the midsized tanks.
I always black mine out and I usually set them up to look like they are part of a stream or a river. That four foot length allows me to use decent sized pieces of drift wood or have a more extensive yet ( simple ) rock placement.

I agree with all the comments on reasons why the 40 breeder is the best tank. Actually it's in the name. A breeder tank is short and wide while a 55 is a show tank. The 55 is made for viewing the fish and the breeder is meant for raising the fish. Regardless of why you use the tank there is one thing to always consider. Stocking rates are determined by the surface area of the tank for oxygen exchange. The 40 has more surface area than the 55 therefore it can hold more fish in it.

I pick 55. 55 gives the length and appearance of a big fish tank for a budget price. The extra foot of length just gives so much more appearance of size and grandness. and its perfectly suitable for most fish 6 inches or less including angelfish because of the added height. And I feel the 55 is just gonna be more practical for most people who just want something that looks really nice/big and you can stock decent sized fish or larger numbers of fish into.

I was getting a 55 from a guy and once I got to his house I saw a 60 gallon he had for sale for just a little more so I ended up getting it instead.
If you do the math on the 40 breeder it comes out to 50 gallons actually, not sure if you mentioned that but it's also a big plus about the 40b.
I think when I measured mine it was about 45 gallons. Still cool! : -)
I like keeping snails and shrimp so a breeder tank would be ideal. Wonder how long a 40 breeder would stay planted with a crayfish... When I was a child I had a crayfish that would eat literally everything I put into the tank with him. I didn't realize how big he was gonna get at the time and he ate my little 10gallon tank bare within a year. Lol, I started buying feeder goldfish on the occasion for him. He kept one of em around till it grew twice as big before catching it
home depot use to have glass that would perfectly fit a 40 breeder but the down side was you had to cut it if you had a hang on the back filter and sometimes the edges and corners were kinda sharp but I would just cover them up in electrical tape and it would blend in with the tank rim the bright side to it was it only cost about ten bucks 👍

I wish I had seen this video before I bought a 55G. I didn’t even think about surface area 🤦🏻♀️ ! I’m looking for a stand on the short side for easier maintenance. I’m short. I have a 20G tall that someone gave me years ago. I recently set it up and find cleaning, vacuuming and planting very difficult. I have to use a step stool.
It does have a nice viewing panel though! : -)
Back in the 70's 40G breeders weren't easy to get. I got a 55G package deal and was excited as it was bigger than my 20G's. After awhile I regretted getting it, maintenance was a pain trying to gravel vac as it was hard to reach the bottom. Difficult to light back then for growing plants. Not so much surface area compared to tank volume so stocking was still a bit limited. Now that I'm back in the hobby I'll stick with my 40G breeders, 75G and 125G, I find them nicer and easier (except the 125G) to work on. Aqua-scapes look much nicer with the deeper front to back. Maybe if I was only displaying a handful of angelfish or discus I "might" consider a 55G, no not really. LOL

The 40 gallon breeder for me had multiple 55s and the 12 inch wide just kills it can’t fit much of a aqua scape and have room for the fish to swim picking up a 40 gallon breeder acrylic tomorrow to hold me over till I can get a 180-240 gallon

Although I enjoyed the info I am still confused and debating the two. I want rocks, live plants and fish. With I feel the 40 is better for depth. However, I feel that the fish need a good length if they wanna stretch or fly. I only plan on having one aquarium and just wanna pick right the first time.

I saw a 60g breeder at Petco recently. Has the depth of the 40 and the length of a 55. But not as tall as the 75. Perfect mix!
I started off with a 55g and it did me well but I’ve just downgraded to 10s and 20s now I’m left with these giant fish in my 55g I’ll be downgrading to a 40 I think just for less water changes and maintenance in general on the 55 is a hassle

I have a 29g but thinking about getting a 40B to replace it in the future as I have platies, female guppies, female bettas, cardinal tetras and rummy nose tetras.
I came here because I saw a second hand 55 gallon tank and was tempted, but I keep corydoras. They will have so much more living space in the 40 gallon breeder.

Hi Jason,great video. I have a 5 yr.old common goldfish whos4.5 " long. Hes always been by himself. Hes currently in a 20 gallon tank. What tank would be best for him. I just bought a 55 gallon but was hoping you could tell me what's best. I want to get him a few friends too. What type of other fish should I get for him ? More goldfish ? Thx for the great video. Great question - That will be a nice upgrade. I might just add one more goldfish to the 55 gallon. They can get pretty big!
There may be a way of having the best of both worlds by getting a 65 gallon. It is 36x18x24. You would still get the surface area and it would be taller just like the 55. It just wouldn’t be as long as the 55 gallon. I have a 40 gallon now and I was thinking of upgrading to the 65. I wouldn’t have to get a new stand because 2 of the dimensions are the same (36x18).
That is true. 65's are a little hard for me to work on though with the height. : - )
Could you do a 150 gal 4 foot wide xtall vs 125 6foot I’d like your opinion I keep larger American cichlids and feel they would enjoy the 24 in front to back in the 150 vs the 125 that only has 18

You mentioned about getting a lid for the 40-gallon breeder. How could I get one? I had to improvise something because apparently it’s hard to find a lid for them.
If you can’t find them at your LFS you could use 8mm polycarbonate greenhouse siding and cut it to size?

I'm in the process of building a fishroom to breed Mbuna. I was going to buy all 55g tanks for species only but do you think I can use 40g breeders instead? If I use 40g breeders I could fit way more tanks so I could breed way more species.
At the moment we breed 8 species of the less aggressive mbuna separated in 3 tanks so that they don't crossbreed and we have 4 tanks for frys/juveniles.
I would prefer 40 breeders if I were going to do that!
My pet co has breeder 60gal only 16" high my favorite so far but inventory is not normally there 1 or 2 here and there
But think 40gal would fit my room better I didn't account for the extra 3" wood on sides and 1" space

40 breeder. I have a couple of 55s that I have gotten for next to nothing but like barb said go for the 75 if u can. u get the best of both worlds. Surface space and height

I saw a 60gallon breeder at PetCo this week and am seriously considering buying one. It seems like the perfect mix between these two. It has the depth of the 40 breeder and the length of a 55, but not the height of the 55/75 which makes it more difficult to catch fish and do maintenance. Do you have any 60g breeders? Would you ever do a video on them?

Even though im quite late, there is no upside to a 55, it is harder for aquascaping than a 40 and smaller than a 75 for stuff like cichlids.

I I just got a bunch of feeder guppies i am planning on breeding as feeders for my various tanks. with the economy now its getting insane to buy feeders. total I will need 400 to 500 feeders a month eventually. Would the wider tank like a 40 gal breeder be better because it has also more surface air, OR would a 55 gal be better for its larger volume of water. I don't mind over filtering, but that only goes far because too many fish pulling oxygen out of the water is also an issue right? Right now i have a freshwater needle fish in a 75 gal. I got him as a rescue, and he eats like 100 rosy red minnows a month. I know he should be in a small school of 3 or 4 needlefish, but at the moment he is a hungry fish and to me its expensive to buy feeders for just a single one. ATM i bought 100 feeder guppies to start with, and there still small ( about 3/4 an inch to 1 inch.) I separated some to a net breeder in my 55 gal and in a 29 gal with a aquaclear 70 filter with a prefilter on intake. But i ask because i have an option to either upgrade the 55 gal to a 75 gal for my peacock cichlids and use there 55 gal, OR buy a 40 gal breeder for them. I normally make my own lighting using led standard daylight bulbs with a kitchen drawer organizer (6"x 15 ") lined with tinfoil. and the lights simply plug into a small power strip with power outlet to standard bulb connector from home depot. The lights i just use on a timer . the light fixtures just sit on the top of the glass top with the drawer organizer on top with a few vent holes to block glare. I planned on just using some base rock , java ferns and christmas moss on ceramic tiles to make a carpet. Like i said i don't mind over filtering like my 75 gal used to house discus, and on that filtration is an FX6+ and aquaclear 70 filter, I would say overkill but with filtration is there such a thing ? I tend to keep to the physical filtration (spounge) / biological filtration methods in my tanks and I use live plants also for filtering. So with all that what size tank do i need and how much filtration to handle over filtering if needed. Oh nd i even have a pothos plants roots in the 29 gal too to suck up more nitrates.If i calculate right 10 female guppies would put out about 500 fry a month maybe 1 or 2 more to also compensate for die offs. would you agree? I started with 100 medium sized fry, this I felt would compensate for die offs in transport and weaker fish considering how feeder stock is kept and still have at least 10 to 12 healthy females and a few healthy males. I also know its gonna get a population explosion sinbce i also have to give time for the fry to grow up to be used as semi to full adults as feeders, so there will be a few months with fry in different stages of development.
