How Much Laundry Does Disney Do?

- Disney World is a massive vacation destination with 20+ hotels and over 36,000 hotel rooms. That means a lot of bedsheets and a lot of towels, not to mention the uniforms for cast members. So when all is said and done, how do you wash all of that? How much laundry is Disney doing?

Now I’m curious about how the Disney Cruise Lines laundry works
Actually, pretty much the same. They have those tunnel washers, laundry presses and conveyor system to the dryers as well. This is from a backstage tour on a cruise: photos.app.goo.gl/tu4meGYQCGbU4XZeA
That costume hanging system reminds me of the door warehouse scene from Monsters Inc.
Aka the door warehouse attraction we've been waiting for ever since the movie came out!
Had to get the inspiration from somewhere, right?
The doors were actually inspired by the costuming facilities!!
@@HeyImAlissa818 Really? That's a cool little factoid.
I've always wondered this! The cast members work so hard. They definitely deserve more credit than they get.
I love these videos that show how a place so magical has a lot of things going on in the background.
Huh, they could easily hide a drug lab there.
Blake Xu Lol you better watch out that you don't get "Meth Mouse" and lose your teeth. It should be okay though because it's Squeaky Clean and top Mouseketeer Shelf quality.
@@treyartson6788 MDMA seal of approval. Primo stuff.
@@blakexu4943 lmfao
OK, that was WAY cooler than I expected from the title and topic!
Never underestimate the importance of logistics. All the behind the scenes operations that make the magic possible.
The videos that seem like they should be the most boring end up being the most interesting. Keep up the great content!
I’m currently in my room in the contemporary, it’s odd to see what happened to the blanket I have on top of me right now. It is also odd to see b-roll of the hotel I’m in and be able to pick out exactly what room I’m in
Laundromat footage is very satisfying
yes. yes it is.
"The answer is a lot" thanks Rob good video..oh wait there's more
As someone watching from Europe, a HUGE thank you for always putting the numbers in both imperial and metric units ^^
😎👍 Several years ago I took the all-day, backstage tour and I was truly amazed seeing the laundry facility in action. That backstage tour should be on every WDW fan's bucket list! 😉
I need a dewatering press
It's just a big wringer. Your washer does the same thing in the spin cycle. If you have a really old washer there's an external wringer on it.
I actually did think of it lol. When my family went to WDW, I remember wondering to myself while at Be Our Guest, “What do they do with the cloth napkins? It’s like they have laundry machines in the back of Belle’s castle. Do they just throw them away after they’re used? That seems wasteful...” So I’m glad you made this video!
How fitting - there was a laundry detergent ad right before this video 🙃
On a related note to costumes, I wonder how much WDW spends on wigs, hairstyling, and makeup for the on-stage cast.
I was an Engineer for Ecolab and we installed a high tech chemical dispensing / data logging system at their main large laundry in the late 90's . At the time there were 5 - "Tunnel Washers", each would spit out 125lb loads every 90 seconds. This laundry serviced linens and towels. It was a fun 4 year project. I also did some work at the All Star Laundry (think the was the name), with more conventional industrial washers.
You hit right on the head Rob! The cast members are the most important part of this and all of the Disney parks!
You missed one opportunity: using footage from the Muppets at Disney special & Gonzo singing "love in a laundromat", but great video still!
Gonzo singing "Love in a Laundromat" came to mind right away when I saw the title.
Watching this makes me want to work at Disney’s laundry buildings so I can watch those machines all day
Ha, ukno, for a while I was wondering why Rob Plays wasn't showing up on my notifications. Recently realized you changed the channel name. Glad to see you haven't gone AWOL on us
Yes I miss his old name
Here's a question for a new video. If the monorail or the peoplemover were implemented into our society as public transportation how much today would it cost for a single ride? Or a monthly membership card?
My husband and his cast members do their own at Downtown Disney. Meaning me! I do his laundry!!!
If you want a real appreciation of the amount of costumes that Disney has for cast members, task the behind the scenes tour in Epcot and you should get to go in the building where they check out their costumes for the day. The all day behind the scenes tour that goes all day (different tour) will take you in the building where they sew the more specialized costumes - also a real treat.
Thanks for the great video! And thank you so very much for adding the quantities you mentioned in the metric system. It really makes a difference for those of us with kilos instead of pounds!
Wow, that's an incredible system. Another thing I never would have thought about.
iirc from the keys to the kingdom tour, some cast members are responsible for their own costumes. Can you shed any light on that?
Seconded
A lot of cast members take their costumes home now and are responsible for cleaning them. When I say costumes, I’m talking what outside of Disney we would call uniforms.
Is so interesting and efficient to have the laundry area for all textiles related to food separated from everything else. Thank you for including the measures in the international system!!!
That was incredibly interesting. I didn't even pay attention to stuff like that. I'm never going to look at a Disney room quite the same way again
You can make any Disney topic interesting
Did the backstage tour ( think that was the name ) a few years ago, we toured this facility. Best part of the tour, I was absolutely amazed !
I wonder how much they save on laundry, compared to a stand-alone hotel, due to the economy of scale.
How much detergent does it take to wash 285,000 pounds of laundry?
@@drewnolde2674 it will take a insane amount of laundry detergent to wash that much laundry, and you would have to go through at least hundreds of Speed Queen laundry pairs they use in most laundromats in the US and the average lifespan of a residential washer dryer set is about 11,000 to 12,000 cycles.
Rob, this is amongst your most interesting videos ever. And I don’t say that lightly.
👏
Now my question is: what about the ships? Are there big laundry rooms on board, or do they bring in a fresh pallet of linens and napkins when the dock and send the dirty ones to be washed elsewhere?
Laundry operations on a cruise ship are huge and they have pretty much the same machines, tunnel washers, laundry presses and conveyor systems to the dryers. Also, they do wash passenger laundry as well. Took several backstage tours on cruise ships and the laundry room always is a highlight for me. Here are some pictures I took last time: photos.app.goo.gl/tu4meGYQCGbU4XZeA
I would imagine they have onboard laundry facilities. I repaired laundry machines back in my Navy days. Nothing that big, but my boat was smaller ha ha 😎
@@TitoTimTravels hey Shipmate! I can vouche for that, I was S-2 (mess specialist) I had a good friend on my ship who took me down to see how S-3 handles laundry- puts small laundromats to shame! Thank you for your service! fair winds and following seas!
There are also more, less technically advanced laundry facilities in every "character room" across the parks and in several other locations! I used to work costuming for Festival of Fantasy, Move It Shake It, and the Hoedown Happening, and we did our laundry at the production center behind Splash Mountain and Pirates where parades leave from. If it could be thrown in a washer and then a dryer or hung in the dry room, OR if it could be hand washed (and then also thrown in the dry room), we washed it in house. If it needed more attention, dry cleaning, or pressing, it was sent to textile services. The character room (where Mickey and the Princesses pick up their clothes and accessories) does laundry the same way, and there was a schedule of when Textile Services would pick up and drop off our out-of-house laundry. And then there's ACCESSORIES. Shoes and belts and fur pieces and the rings that fill out princess skirts are each their own ordeal. Festival of Fantasy has 8 costumers and a supervisor and coordinator every day, with additional help from Hoedown Happening's costumer when it's time to load the truck, and each costumer has a different role come laundry time after parade. There are 6 costumers and a coordinator for the Street Party, and one costumer for Hoedown who reports to the Festival of Fantasy coordinator.
Fun fact: the flag on Main Street is laundered in the Magic Kingdom character room, and there are special instructions for it's care per the code you mentioned in your previous video about the US flags on Main Street!
and a final note: with lots of people being laid off at the parks right now and with the parks not currently doing their usual parades, meet and greets, and holiday parties, most of my friends from Disney costuming are no longer with the company, so seeing you post a video about Disney laundry was oddly touching for me at this time lol
Teams of unseen workers making life comfortable for others. It's like Downton Abbey except with a Mouse.
I used to work in entertainment laundry at Disneyland, and I wish we had something as high tech as this!!
I love your vids! Especially your Disney cruise series! Keep up the good work!
Hi Rob! Just subscribed today. I have seen you in Michael Kay’s videos (he is my favorite RUclips Disney Enthusiast) and wanted to see your content! WOW this is really interesting content being put out. I love it! Our family is going to binge watch your channel this weekend on “pizza night”...so glad to be here. Thanks for all your hard work and research for your community. Theresa xo
Rob. These are the best videos. Always well researched, educational and interesting. The highest quality. Nobody is a close 2nd on Disney vlogs
I love these behind the scenes videos. Thank you... And..more please.. TFS
Amazing, Rob! Thank you for this video!! 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👍🏽
This blew my mind! One of my favorite videos yet!!
I LOVE these types of videos!!
I am a "laundry nerd" I love washing machines (I'm awaiting a new one 4 me) I'll have to "hand wash" in the mean time (NO I'll NOT go to local laundromat) my dryer still works. As a former 6 flags host, we had a wardrobe dept. where we'd pick up our uniforms. While NOT as vast as Disney's we still did a lot of work for the 2,000 seasonal employees for 9 months of the year. That was one huge machine 4 WDW. I still like to watch the clothes carousel @ the cleaners. LOL!!!!
Good stuff, thanks for making this video 😀👍🏼
Hey Rob.love the fact that you also provide the metric system measurements along with the imperial ones and love the videos overall.
So interesting! Thanks for this!
The giant corkscrew machine is just fascinating to me, I could watch it operate for a full day.
Thank you that was a great video love all the time and effort you put into your videos.
Rob: shows Fountain of Nations
Me: *cries*
Rob, answering questions I didn't know I needed the answer to
I’ve seen you everywhere across Disney videos
Very impressive!!! Never thought about it before.
Great Video, I love to know the behind the scene at Disney videos
Cool video! I like being the one with random Disney Park facts; thanks to you!
As a former costuming CM- lots. LOTS of laundry 😂😂
The feeling I felt when I saw the giant puck of linens was indescribable.
why is everything about disney so impressive??
Yes, it's impressive because they do everything on a grand scale. They do this for efficiency.
It was so fascinating to get to tour one of the laundry facilities on the Behind the Magic tour!
I really wanna see how they clean the costumes for the character department!
Rob your videos are awesome. You should do some investigative journalism on shopdisney shipping/ordering logistics and inventory control. They do most things so well, but shop Disney is a disaster...maybe you can find some things they can improve upon!
Lived in central florida for 12 years now and I have never been to Disney.
What's up with that? Being a Florida resident you get a discount. Start at the Magic Kingdom, then Epcot, then MGM, then Animal Kingdom. You can spend a whole week there.
does anyone remember when did Disney World started to allow cast members to do self-laundering of their costumes? Was it around 1999? I wonder what the ratio is of those doing self-laundering vs having Disney wash them...
Do they really wash it themselves? I thought they would just check out a certain number of costumes to take home but would bring back the dirty or worn costumes to exchange for fresh ones again.
Brandis13 I don't think I ever washed my own costume when I worked there (EPCOT - Norway), but a couple of my collegues did. Some sizes have fewer available costumes and/or more competition for the size, so a few people would refuse to give up the few perfectly fitting ones to Costuming once they finally had it, and rather just toss it in with the rest of their clothes when they did laundry and rotating the less perfect fits.
I’d go to disney world just for the massive industrial logistics empire that supports the overpriced knick knack emporium. That they created an entire Township “improvement district” to have more liberty in land procurement, use, and services, is monumental. If nothing else, just proves that private enterprise can do public services far more efficiently. They could generate water, power and commercial laundry services for most of Osceola County, and it wouldn’t increase workload that much. Of course you’d have to get the barcoding and logistics, but Disney is absolutely brilliant!
I’ve been doing my costume laundry myself since 1998
I noticed I don’t see those forced RUclips adds on your channel either. Thanks for what you do. Love the statistic videos very much.
Rob answering a question I didn't even know I had
Thanks.
Wow just wow
great vid
Hold that last huge corkscrew laundry machine just a minute while I get my skivvies!
Hey, how cool, this is what I do at my day job! I write software for a company that designs and builds huge industrial laundry machines...so I can say I work in the Amusement Park industry now, right? 😁🤣
I had friend who work in the costuming depth
Man I would take that sponsoring money as long as it wasn't like a sweepstakes company I say get that extra money 7 it will add up
Rob, I'm geekily curious about how character costumes are cleaned, inside and out. They get so much intense use and yet they never look or smell bad - on the outside at least!
They can wash my clothes too lol.
Sad as Florida usually has a water shortage,
Everyone always wants a map of the parks but I want a map of all the Disney utilities in Florida. The laundry facilities seem fascinating to me but I'm an unbalanced fan
Meet my wife and you’ll know I do more laundry than Disney ☹️ just kidding , i really enjoy your videos brother
That’s a lot of washing
Along with my question. Would it new more likely to see the original Disneyland Peoplemover or the Magic Kingdom Peoplemover?
looks like monster inc factory
Where is the food and beverage facility located? Love to search the places on Google Maps and was able to find the other 3, but not this one. Is it in the same place as the "secret" test kitchen behind Port Orleans?
Costumes Rob, we do not wear uniforms. :)
Costumes, NOT uniforms!!! ;-)
Any info about the kind of hours these facilities are running?
Sounds like a real Mickey Mouse operation.
I had a stupid question related to your video : Where does guest laundry go?? I have never seen cast members in the resort specific laundry areas, and sometimes they are labeled like they went out somewhere. Does guest laundry go to a plant?
I'm not sure about guest-specific laundry but most of the resort laundry gets loaded into bins on trucks that go to the on-property laundry facilities. In a presentation from some Disney industrial engineers I attended, they talked about partnering with some outside laundry companies too so it could go off-property.
@@phdprincess thanks. That kind of lines up with my observations and suspicions.
My cousin had to wash his uniform everyday. Annoying. He only had 1. Then my dad is a chef. Same thing.
Very interesting. Even if you could afford it where would you put it in your apartment??
No views I see
sometimes you just gotta ask yourself the real, thought provoking questions in life. like, how much laundry does Disney World do every day?
When did you change your channel name?
Why cant they just keep making the parks bigger people say. They have room they say. People never think of the gears that make Wakt Disney Workd work.
The 2 downvoters must be wearing dirty socks.
Back in my Navy days I repaired some pretty big washing machines on the ship... but nothing that big! I would love to work for Disney. After this covid mess is over, I could be convinced to go back to the US for a Disney job.
Looks like a sweat shop 😏
It would look like that to most people but it's not. I worked for WDW some time ago. The conditions aren't bad and there are perks to working for Disney no matter where a cast member works.
