  • The founder of Waldron, William Grandison (W. G.) Featherston, moved to the area in 1832 with his mother, wife, and four children. He built a store/tavern on his property where Main Street was later constructed. A post office named Poteau Valley was established at this location in 1838, with W. G. Featherston as the first postmaster. In 1843, his brother Edward wrested the post office from him and moved it northeast to a new community called Winfield. In 1845, W. G. Featherston donated ten acres of land to establish a town and county seat at Poteau Valley and hired engineer W. P. Waldron to survey and lay out the town. The town of Waldron was named in his honor.
The Civil War brought four attacks on Waldron in 1863 but the town did not experience its first major setback until some of the buildings were burned by the departing occupying forces of the Second Kansas Cavalry in 1864. The Union forces were sent to Waldron to capture the Confederate forces and to guard the southern and western military roads leading to Fort Smith. After the Civil War, this small western town experienced great difficulty regaining law and order when two factions of the Republican Party expressed strong political views, leading to bloodshed. During the years 1873 to 1879, more than thirty murders occurred, resulting in Governors Elisha B. Baxter, August H. Garland, and William R. Miller ordering the militia to Waldron to restore order.
    Early Twentieth Century
The village of Waldron experienced a steady population growth during the first half of the twentieth century. When a terminus of a branch of the Kansas City Southern Railroad (KCS) reached Waldron in 1903, it became an important shipping point, bringing economic growth to the area; the KCS organized the Arkansas Western Railroad in 1904, and it offered transportation from Fort Smith to Heavener, Oklahoma, on to Waldron. A stone jail was built in 1908 to replace the wooden jail. By 1920, the town had a bank, a weekly newspaper, a canning factory, a flour mill, a brick factory, a soda pop plant, an ice and cold storage plant, electricity, telephones, large lumber interests, natural gas, mercantile businesses, and a population of 918 residents. The first automobile arrived in 1912, and horse-drawn wagons and buggies gave way to the automobile, paving the way for car dealerships, gasoline stations, and garages.

I spent the 1st 10 years of my life living in Waldron. My father was 1 of the 2 town doctors in the late 60's. The movie theater in Waldron is the oldest operating theater in the state. Enjoyed the video and remembering my old stomping grounds with my old dog Bobo.

Well that looks like a quaint little town. What impressed me the most was the low crime rates and the 65% retention of born there residents. We live in the city and it's no so quaint here, However we're within a mile of Drs. Hospitals and a Super Walmart. I guess it's a good place to be old when all you have for transportation is mobility scooters. Thx for the tour and the history info on your little town. Hugs to Y'all

I was born in a small town near there. Born at my grandparents' house. Left there in 1943 with my family. Have never been back. I'm 85 now, so don't think I'll ever get back. It's Bonanza, outside Ft. Smith.
Think it's really small town. Near coal mines. My grandfather worked in one. I would appreciate a tour of the town. Probably only three streets so it'd be quick.
Really enjoyed this. Looking forward to more.
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year Mike, and for all your dogs, and chickens too.

Mike, I used to be hooked on Casino Slots, like I would go 5 or 6 days a week. Then I started a coupon group on Facebook, and no more time for Casinos, to busy getting the deals and posting the deals around town. But that got to be to much, had over 300 people join my group. So I took the group down. Coupons are few and far between now a days and I really buy no name most times now, whatever is cheapest. Thank for the ride along, it was nice. ;)

Always fascinated by the historical backgrounds. I watched cab views from planes trains and the Yukon train was awesome. I also found a video that followed the old tracks the wagons left going west. In Europe, the engineering for railroads and ski lifts is awesome. Now I found some more in Italy that's like an elevator that is underground and goes from level of the streets to another even travelling sideways and straight up. Trams that fly through narrow Portugese streets. The world is a fascinating place - if one cares to look. Thank you for sharing.

Tax here in Ontario, Canada is 13%. I love small towns. Did you mention a Library???? I think Harps needs some competition. I hate spending above what I know I can get somewhere else, but there you would be spending even more on gas. So If say I took a trip out of town to Walmart, I would stock up on whatever I could, as long as I had the money mind you, and I be canning whatever I could, that for sure. Oshawa was a small town, but people that work in Toronto, are moving to Oshawa, Courtice & Bowmanville, they just keep building new homes, I would not buy one, as they not made like the olden days. I bought a upright freezer before Bradley was born and it is still running and Brad is 32 yrs old, So I have had that freezer maybe 33 yrs, Same with Christmas tree, bought at Canadian Tire before Brad was born and just put in garbage last winter, cause I did not want a 6ft. tree anymore. I better touch wood after talking about my freezer lol We do have housing program, if you want to wait 15 years for apartment, geared to your income. They say that our population is going to grow. I was born and raised in Toronto, so I guess you say I city girl, but not true, I like wide open places, i hate people staring at me, very shy I am, makes me feel uncomfortable, I rarely go out, you know the saying Home is my Happy Place, well you got me there, it sure is.

too bad with the tax rate, it’s hurting the people that can’t afford it.
good job on the will. still dealing with my moms estate with no will… if you don’t have anything (don’t own property and no money to speak of)it doesn’t matter so much.
have a will and don’t hoarde or hang on to everything you’ve ever owned. the estate sale made some money but cost a lot of money too(thousands). that is a massively huge burden to leave people.

Glad you started the process of writing a Will. The more you can leave to people and causes you care for and the less to the government, the better.
