LA and Houston have lots of things in common, but in terms of skyline and urban planning Houston is doing better job. Houston’s skyline is much denser, have more CBDs, and more new buildings are under construction. A new high-rise building proposed in LA faces much more challenges to break ground compared to in Houston.

Huge!!! Classic example where a city’s downtown doesn’t show the entire story. Ie Atlanta too.
I will never disrespect Houston again. In Texas, its Houston, Austin, Dallas for me. I put Houston way ahead of Philly. Need to see a similar comparison with Miami and Atlanta.

    • @benji4kdrones844

I think that in the public light, Houston is usually somewhat underestimated. In terms of skyscrapers, Houston ranks fourth, behind New York, Chicago and Miami. It should be noted that Houston has taller buildings than cities like Miami, Dallas, Denver, Phoenix, Las Vegas or Seattle that tend to have more national attention.

I've flown over both cities and Atlanta isn't even in the same league. I've been to virtually all major cities and Miami is I think equally nice but in a different way. Houston has twice as many building over 35 stories as Ft. Worth and Dallas metro area combined. I was at a conference for the steel industry being held in Houston back in the 2000s and one of the executives told me that at that moment over 80% of all sky cranes were deployed in Houston on projects. You could look across the city and see crane after crane. This went on for a long time. BUT, they are the single worst overbuilt commercial real estate market in the US right now. There is no over a 25% vacancy in non-residential (i.e. business) towers, nearly twice the national average. They've recently started a number of new residential towers, so they may be on the verge of doing the same thing there. I've been here for 40 years--some things never change and one is "boom/bust" -"rinse/repeat."

Lack of zoning makes it possible. Dallas has zoning that restricts high-rises to certain areas. That’s why Dallas skyline now extends for over two miles consistently since they built more and more high-rises in Uptown Dallas.

No zoning put it in a total mess! Restrictions makes it even worst!!! They arent allowed to build certain buildings! With zoning, you can build whatever you want as long its in a proper zoning area. Restrictions doesnt let them build certain buildings!
