We were snorkelling on the Big Island of Hawaii just with shorts and tshirt. I came out of the water with a deep gash just under my knee from the lava. I now have a volcano shaped scar. It’s so sharp I never felt it happen. Most of us had many other minor bleeding cuts on our legs. It’s not just the molten lava that’s dangerous, lava can be razor sharp. Falling through a very thin crust is a huge danger and you don’t know it’s there until it happens.

Great footage, even with ‘bulletproof’ idiots or ‘possibly flameproof,’ interrupting your videos. Hopefully it won’t happen again. It would be terrible if they deny access. But it might become necessary. After all, so many people are sue happy and would gladly go after the government. ‘You didn’t tell us not to walk on the hot lava. I had a last look at the volcano last night before going to bed, but I was stopped in my tracks when I saw that there is was no break in the lava flow from the crater its volume had increased. I watched until after midnight but then I had to go to sleep as I had work in the morning. I got up early and came downstairs to watch the volcano again and still the lava was flowing from the vent. There must almost be a lake of molten lava beneath the hard surface by now and there seems to be little indication of where it's going. I suppose like any lake, it can only fill so far before it starts to spill out - somewhere. But this is not water and I hope visitors will keep that in mind before they step on to one of the flows. There have been severe accidents at Yellowstone Park with small numbers of visitors not adhering to warning signs and getting into a lot of hot water. I so, so hope this doesn't happen at the eruption. Please enjoy, but at a safe distance. Best wishes, Paul - Sheffield, South Yorkshire.

I hope that you are s/how getting some financial rewards for your efforts, but if not I have read other ppl.s wishes that they could help you in some way, perhaps by setting up a 'go fund me site?' . . .In any case do not delete any of your footage's because I think you could combine them make a documentary series detailing how this event unfolded for posterity! Some might say day by day descriptions of events is like watching grass grow but I think many more would find it a fascinating adventure as have I!

I was here for a few days a week ago. It was an amazing experience (I posted some video here and will post more soon). I didn't walk on any lava, but I was at this spot many times, and very close to expanding flows in other areas. In this area the lava moves very slowly in general (I never saw active flow here, but I missed the recent breakout into the valley that cut the main trail). When the lava is moving, its obvious from the sound (it sounds like glass breaking). Likewise when lava breaks out as "springs" in the solid mass, it's very obvious from the sound, and heat. Getting very close to such areas is practically impossible due to the heat. So in general, what they are doing here, while not sensible, is actually not that dangerous. More dangerous would be getting close to very hot rapidly flowing sources, which can overflow channels and change directly unpredictably depending on the velocity of the flow upstream. That said, walking any distance over the lava field here is definitely not advisable, because of the risk of breaking through an area of thin crust over a tube, into the hot lava below. The lava itself often forms as stacks of thin plates, and is surprisingly fragile.

I'm from the US here, I wouldn'tve gone out there unless I had a good dam reason for doing it. Like the pursuit of science and discovery...I'd have brought some samples and real close up pictures back. Wouldn'tve been for the simple thrill. But thats just me. And walking on the close edge of the cool lava is not the same as running out to the edge of the volcano. (I wonder how the daredevils shoes faired....)(and wouldn't some people like to know the path he took?..minefield of public opinion or the volcano...ya know, the volcano has better odds)

A woman jumped into Mauna Loa. Quick scream, gone.
