  • Copernicus's big discovery that the Earth went round the Sun, and not the other way round, was one of the most important of all moments in science. Three hundred years after the event, it inspired a thunderous piece of historical imagining from Jan Matejko - Poland greatest painter. Matejko is the first Polish artist ever to be shown at the National Gallery in London. It's a moment that needed to be recorded. So we went and recorded it!

Amazing painting and wonderful how much detail Waldemar can pack into a 10 minute vid! I can't help but notice, watching this after viewing many other films of his recently, that he's been routinely challenging the National Gallery's interpretation of art for many years. It's a wonder they still let him in!

My favorite part of all of these is when Waldemar says, "...but I don't think that's right." Always entertaining to hear his interpretations.

Hi, as I am unable to see the painting close up I was wondering if you could answer a question for me? Copernicus's face appears in close ups to have an underlying cross hatch pattern visible. I am interested to know if this is the linen / canvas weave showing through or an interesting technique used by Matejko to achieve a sense of depth. Cheers

Exactly this. This is Matejko's "signature" trick to use a thick canvas hatch to improve depth illusion by adding various amounts of oil color. Anyway, I recommend You to see some of his works in person if You will have a chance. I'm not a big fan of realism but his technique is on a high level.
