  • This vagus nerve reset is designed to relieve stress and anxiety by restoring the social engagement state referenced in Polyvagal Theory developed by Stephen Porges.
Vagus nerve exercises also turn off fight or flight in the sympathetic nervous system to release trauma stored in the body.

-- Vagus Nerve Reset To Release Trauma From Your Body (Polyvagal Exercises) --
When it comes to trauma stored in the body, people usually ask me two questions.
    The first is:
How do I know if I have trauma stored in my body?
The answer to that one is, you do. We all do. Trauma is a part of life and we’ve all got stuff.
(Even if you don’t remember it.)
It’s why our shoulders are tight and our backs ache. It’s why we get weekly massages and go to therapy.
It underlies most chronic health conditions and makes them worse.
    Case in point:
Did you know that researchers have drawn a connection between experiencing racism and a higher prevalence of adult onset asthma for black women?
Trauma isn’t always about the Big Events. Yes, those count. Of course they do.
But so does having a distant mother (who likely had her own trauma).
Cultural shaming (hello women who were constantly told to be quiet, be small, not take up space).
Toxic work environments. Not being heard. Microaggressions.
And of course the ever prevalent accidents, injuries, falls out of trees and off horses, broken legs, cracked ribs, etc, etc, etc.
So, you’ve got some trauma. You don’t have to call it that, but it’s there, okay?
Now the second question: what do we do about it?
This is the part I love. SO MUCH of the conversation surrounding trauma in our culture boils down to understanding the narrative -- what’s your story?
    That’s important, BUT…
It doesn’t get to the biological roots. These parts of our bodies are up to 500 million years old and they frankly don’t give a flying unicorn fart about your story.
So that’s where I come in.
We can “talk” to these ancient parts of you -- the parts where fear, stress and trauma are stored -- through movement and sensation, which form the language of your nervous system.
And that’s what I’m showing you how to do in this video.
You can use this vagus nerve reset regularly any time you feel stressed, anxious or tense.
Be sure and leave me a comment to let me know how this vagus nerve reset went for you!

I was very discouraged when I first began this practice because I could not hold the gaze for 30 seconds. In fact, it was such a powerful exercise for me, I became nauseous and dizzy after my first attempt with just 15 seconds on each side. However, I kept at it with my small 15 second gazes and tried to reassure myself that something was better than nothing. It was. Keep at it no matter how many seconds you can hold. It's a mediation element so that means it can build over time❣️ It did for me. 🌹

WOW!!! I didn't know what to expect when performing this exercise, most people have commented they cry or have better motion in the neck, not me my experience was completely different. I have had a tremendous amount of stress for decades in combination with covid related damage. When I started the exercise looking to the right it was hard for me to focus my eyesight on a given point, I kept going holding my eyes as far as they would go. About 5-10 seconds in a huge wave of panic came over me, rapid heartbeat, uneasiness, alarms going off, i kept going. I had no swallow or yawn halfway through. When my eyes came back to center it felt like my entire chest cavity opened up for my first deep breathe in decades, it was incredible. I looked to the left for 30 seconds, my legs started to get warm and tingly. My heart was beating so quickly and my breathing was so rapid i thought to myself OMG I'm going to have to go to the emergency room. I sat up, was very dizzy a little discombobulated. It felt like i was walking for the fist time, very strange feeling like my legs didn't know what to do. I sat on the bed and checked my pules which remained over 130 BPM for about 15 minute's, i could breathe so easily and felt so calm. About 3 minutes in i had a strong urge to go to the bathroom, most amazing bowel movement of my life. It took about 2 hours to calm down and for the body to get settled. I went to the beach the next morning and i never felt more relaxed, stress free and a calmness that is indescribable. This has helped me so much I'm at a loss for words, i must have had so much trauma built up it exploded.... The second time i did the exercise about a week later, i threw up a few minutes later. What i find interesting is most of my experience is GI related, maybe its from my appendicitis trauma. Another interesting point, i went to see an energy healer a couple months prior. She stated, huh that's interesting your brain and GI tract are not communicating at all..... I truly believe this exercise has helped them reconnect, thank you!!!

So far anyone I've seen presenting this has neglected to emphasize the exact position on the back of the head that gives you the greatest result and feedback. In Stanley Rosenberg's further description of this exercise he notes that the eye muscles doing the movement are connected at the BASE of the skull. So by making sure your first fingers or thumbs feel just beneath the curve of the occipital bone just above the connection to the neck you can notice very subtle changes in the muscular tension. To find the optimal point for your body with your hands low on your skull behind your head slowly nod chin to chest In the west we call this a nod YES. (some other cultures use this motion differently!) Try it with your hands both ways and see what you notice. It's all about YOU and learning to know how your body and heart FEEL. Thank you Sukie, your video is very helpful. Can't wait to see more of your channel!

That’s great. Just a note: people often go their whole lives with undiagnosed or misdiagnosed neck tightness specifically on the right side. IF this is a recurring/ongoing issue for you, look up the “Right TMCC Pattern” and seek out a Postural Restoration physical therapist. The issue is resultant of our naturally asymmetrical physiology and subsequent breathing patterns.
The vagus reset she outlines is a great way to get neutral and an awesome tool for combating tightness. The stuff I mentioned above is what you’d wanna look into if you found yourself having to vagus reset more often than is practical and you continued falling back into that right neck tightness.

First I tried 30 seconds on each side and didn't experience anything. I tried it again for about 40 seconds and still nothing. So I tried a third time, 60 seconds on each side. Then my breathing suddenly became very deep and a bit faster. I could feel energy moving through my body, entering my feet. As I sat up I moved my jaw (I have had some clicking from my jaw on the right side) and both sides of my jaw sounded *sqwishhh* in my ears and the clicking in my jaw was gone which I've had for maybe 6 months. It's like something losened up on the right side and made it balance on both sides. This is great. I will keep doing it. It worked - I had to come back for a brief part 2, but whatever it was left my system. She is spiritual, not religious, and works with Archangel Michael. Hey love, I know your struggle 😘. I have been depressed once (2 years ago) but it was really bad. Taking vitamin D and omega 3 every day can help. Its good for your serotonine levels. Writing down the best moments of your day in a journal at the end of the day also really really helped me to feel more positive and appreciate the moments that made me smile that day. Its also great for when youre having a really bad moment. Just reading that journal reminds you there is beauty out there waiting for you 😘. Surrounding yourself with people that genuinly care for you and only watch and read things that make you feel you good. Be very kind to yourself.. think/speak to yourself in a way you would talk to someone you love. You deserve that 🤗. Go out into nature. Breathe in the fresh air and enjoy the stars and the moon..I know it sounds corny but it makes a world of a difference. Move your body..yoga, running..any type of movement that you love can help you produce endorfines and connect you to your body. It brings you into the present moment and helps you let go of overthinking. I don't know if you are taking medication but it is a possibility and it can certainly help. I prefer to not take anything chemical if I don't have to but it really helped me back then. Remember that nothing lasts forever.. that is also true for this depression you are going through. You will be happy again even if that is something that feels out of reach now 😘. If I can do it, you can do it🤗🤗🤗. Trust in your own intuition as well .. it tells you what you can do/change to feel better. Much love, Cindy

The first time it was a struggle to turn eyes to the left. I didn't feel enormous peace afterwards, but the neck was definitely more relaxed and I could turn my head with ease. Later I tried this before going to bed. I have ADHD and during bedtime my head is quite often very busy with all sorts of thoughts. I did the exercise in a pretty dark bedroom and still I felt quite peaceful and relaxed afterwards and there was little or no traffic in my head. I also did this once sitting in a car. It was a situation where I was getting nervous about time while waiting for my husband as he went shopping. I leaned back with my head to keep it steady and turned my eyes both ways. Afterwards, I felt very relaxed, the nervousness had disappeared and I felt like I could take a nap (which I never do!). My husband also benefitted from this, as I was not irritated when he got back to the car 😀

These past couple of weeks I have felt so anxious and tense that I felt like I couldn't take in a full breath. I always felt like I was gasping for air. I did this exercise twice on both sides and the second round I definitely felt a shift....I kept yawning. When I finished I took a deep breath in and it felt so clear and like a breath of fresh air, I almost started crying of happiness. I am definitely going to keep doing this!

It’s wonderful , felt the need to swallow and catch my breath - it’s an amazing relief of pain - I tore both shoulders in Iraq and Afghanistan and both knees meniscus - always in a lot of pain . The relief from this vagus nerve rest is a miracle in God’s way of giving us self healing capability . Thanks so much for sharing this gift with us .

Sukie Baxter, this is ridiculous! This simple exercise actually has an effect! When I looked to the right, I felt a pain on the left side near the base of my skull and my eyes kept wanting to return to center. I have double vision when I look right because I was assaulted on the right side of my face, causing a "blowout fracture" of my orbital socket. Once I returned my eyes back to neutral, I felt dizzy. Looking left was much more pleasant. At the end of the exercise, I had less stress in my neck when I tried to turn to the right and chronic tension in my neck is noticeably less! THANK YOU!

I got to 30s & had a swallow on both sides but felt so dizzy & my eyes were shaking when I got back to middle. I am curious how come & what more to help (planning to practice this & +hold time daily), but obviously my vagus nerve is crying out & needs the additional help. Nerve sensations are the absolute worse when they are unhappy.

Every time I try one of these exercise I cry. When my anxiety was really bad last year I remember if anyone touched my back (doctors, friend tried giving massage) I would start panicking and hyperventilating. This feels like the reverse. I did feel more range of motion after. Thank you.

I have MS and most of my problems are the result of a cervical lesion. It is quite difficult to turn my head fully to the left. This exercise certainly helped to alleviate some of that pain and stiffness. While there was no deep breath or sigh, I do feel incredibly calm and relaxed. I'll certainly be trying this again. Thank you.

Wonderful! That's a common response for people who have been stuck in high activation for a while. Many of my clients notice they are very sleepy at first and then once their nervous systems adapt and they are more naturally regulated, they simply feel general relaxation with practices like these. Thanks for watching and commenting! 💜

I noticed a strong desire to return my eyes to the middle position before the 30 seconds were up. No sighs, swallowing so will probably need to increase time of eyes being right or left. But I noticed when the exercise was done, a MUCH calmer feeling in my nervous system and in my muscles in general.

I've realised that I don't cry when blocks are released, I laugh or at least smile. So it's interesting to read that others cried, I was smiling very big after doing this and I still am 10 minutes later. Nothing happened on my right side but 2 seconds into the left I swallowed. The left is where everything goes haywire in my system and my neck has been jammed up on that side despite all kinds of efforts on my own as well as monthly adjustments. I definitely feel reset. Thank you!!
