Disco is right. There may be more opportunities to wrestle now. That doesn’t mean wrestlers are making as much money. Also, businesses that don’t generate new customers will fail because the hardcores will be there regardless. Ever seen a thriving bar with no women and a bunch of old creeps sitting around? Me neither, those places die slow, pathetic, incel deaths. That’s Indy wrestling these days, a surplus of shit dive bars with no hot women.

@@GLPitt1 Exactly. Plus the people making a living as wrestlers now aren't doing so hot for what the job actually is. 150k is the average pay for those guys minus the few Cena, Lesnar, Reigns out there. It's good money but no insurance, lots of travel, no per diem, lodging isn't covered so that 150K starts dropping real fast to be more like a 40-60k with gas, hotels, food, gym memberships, and medical.
PLUS it's only hot with advertisers who don't do much research, they just assume wrestling will be big again or is holding at some fairly large size. They didn't realize the majority of the Gen X/Gen Y crowd left long ago and the rest were drove out. So we're building towards a ESPN level mess where eventually it becomes unprofitable as advertisers realize the 2 million IS the whole world.

I have an overarching theory about contemporary culture (ie. the last 20 years, especially), and here's how it relates to the current wrestling audience (and Disco alluded to this)- the modern-day fans eat up watching normal guys who they can project themselves onto- I believe that they want to fantasize about being wrestlers and getting the girl and would rather watch schlubby guys like Kevin Owens (who is admittedly very talented) or undersized guys that look like shit like Joey Janella that they can project themselves onto, because it's less work to pretend like you're one of these guys than to see yourself as or ever aspire to work to be a guy that actually projects the aura of a badass man. Sorry to be an asshole, but comparing these modern-day 'superstars' to even the smaller guys of 20 years ago like Hart and Michaels is such horseshit- those guys were both around 6 feet tall and looked like and carried themselves like MEN and had an aura of true mainstream CELEBRITY about them- look at Hart in his leather jacket and shades and look at Michaels in his amazing outfits, and the way they carried themselves- even the truly smaller guys of that era brought something else major to the table to make up for being average size (eg Dean Malenko had '1000 Holds' and proved it week in and week out), and even guys that were only 5'8"-5'11" were still muscular and looked like they took care of their bodies and were athletes and looked like they could still whip you in a bar fight. Joey Janella? Orange Cassidy? These fucking geeks that project dorkiness look like they work at a deli. Let's go back further- even guys like Harley Race or Dick the Bruiser or Big John Studd who weren't exactly roided out bodybuilders were still big hulking motherfuckers who could rip you limb from limb. We now have the worst of all worlds- guys that are 5'9" that look like they don't workout that don't project celebrity who do nothing but goofy high spots and 'high impact' moves and wouldn't stand out in any way from the average crowd of obese / pathetically shrimpy American males.

I don't think it has anything to do with appearance tbh. I think people are missing the point. What fans look for are larger than life characters. The real reason people get behind Orange Cassidy is because he is offers the fans something unique and different when compared to bigger dudes. He is entertaining on and off the ring and got himself over without even saying a word. Off course we would need him to be more serious if he plans on developing as a serious threat. Someone like Roman on the other hand is too serious, does the same five moves and is more of a cookie cutter baby face. Built superstars should not get over solely because of their size and look that is why Cena failed at first, they need to be entertaining as well.

I totally agree that you don't have to be 6'2" 240, but on the other hand, if you're 5'9" and look like a geek, there's a huge swath of would-be fans who will never take you seriously unless you are present yourself as a legit shooter / badass (eg Taz, Malenko, Benoit) or otherwise at least look like you are some kind of athlete. My all-time fav was Bret Hart- not a huge guy, but i credible worker, treated himself like a pro, and was serious- can you imagine the smaller greats of 20 years ago (Hart, Guerrero, Malenko, Owen Hart, Marty Jannetty) working with the indie goofballs of today? They complain about things that don’t even matter like wins and losses or the number of pretend championships that someone has. Wrestling has gotten away from being something that people enjoy and turned into a never ending roundtable discussion with fans. I used to be a smart mark and I decided that I wasn’t going to watch wrestling that way anymore. I wanted to have fun again.

Cena destroyed the entire roster from 2005-2015... and wrestlers still try to blindly figure out why wrestling never progressed after that. You'll never figure out why wrestling is dying until you step out of the woods and look at the trees. Cena and Roman are MANUFACTURED. They were not success stories, they are gimmicks. If you can't figure that out, then you're wasting your breath. I don't care how long you've been in the business. I remember being desperate to see early ROH for example but you had to wait ages for the dvd.now you can stream it and that core crowd can get whatever they want straight away. The core crowd has grown thanks to the nerd culture that has overtaken it but its not mainstream, even longterm fans like myself have switched off as they do their best to alienate anyone but their core audience. I would imagine as a performer there has never been a better time to make a bit of money. As a longterm fan though I hate the products and many of the performers to the point I don't think I'll ever watch modern stuff regularly again.

KG is delusional here. Wrestling has never been as unpopular as it is now in the US. That's not to say a pocket here and there has a hot indie scene, but overall wrestling is deep, DEEP in the doldrums. CZW and other Philly indies (ROH) were drawing over 900-1,000 fans a show in their heyday several years back. crowds like that aren't ground breaking. Also the problems with guys like Richochet is there's so many other guys like him. Tons of guys today can do flashy wrestling moves, it's almost the norm. Yeah Richochet is good but as time goes on his star will fade because there's a lot of others like him, he doesn't really stand out at all after you see him a bunch of times. Great athletic talent, but totally replaceable / interchangeable like pretty much all the wrestlers from this generation and I think that's the biggest problem. Nobody stands out at all, nobody is unique, nobody is a star.

The modern wrestling isn’t the same. Disco was right about nerds are taking over in professional wrestling and everywhere. However, Professional wrestling is getting political on the ideals of what wrestling should be or shouldn’t be. I feel like modern wrestling isn’t doing original things that we don’t see in professional wrestling nowadays. We see same thing over and over again.
We want to see new things in professional wrestling.
For example being the elite is awesome shows in RUclips. It’s different from wwe that we watch as wrestling fans. You see wrestlers who embrace the characters as themselves or their gimmick. In television shows like WWE shows or AEW shows we don’t see anything different but recycles storyline that doesn’t make no sense at all. Even some wrestlers who has awesome gimmick are being burying because of backstage politics and bad bookings. That’s why wrestling fans are listening to Jim Cornette podcasts and Keep it 100 with Konnan podcasts. Because they want some intelligence logic storyline within modern wrestling.
The best storyline ever seen is the golden lovers in NJPW. There are a lot of lgbt people are wrestling fans. They related with the golden lovers storyline because their is a strong connection between Kenny Omega and Kota Ibushi. It’s the same thing with Heel Sasha Bank and Babyface Bayley when they was in NXT at the time. Both women want to be the best and make the women champions matter. I want to see wrestlers to make wrestling matters with a smart storyline that relatable to us.

6:43 Disco called it! Look at what has happened to NXT. Phased out HHH version and went back to hot girls & big guys with both sides being young. That indie wrestling style was ALWAYS FOR THE nerds never for the mainstream audience AND NEVER WILL BE.

I don't mean to take shots at a guy while he's doing because I hear he's not doing so well... but really, Kevin Gill just SUCKED on this show. Listen to him. He's telling a WRESTLER that he's wrong about how wrestling works.

Sami zane is athleticly as good as hbk. He just lacks the fans base and and charisma. The only reason hbk was so huge was the window moment with Marty. Sami just needs his Marty moment

What neither of these guys take into account is that NOTHING is as popular today as shit used to be. The internet has fragmented the culture into a bunch of niches. This doesn't apply just to wresting.

Fans hate that anything that doesn’t feel organic. They don’t like someone if they think the company was planning to make that guy a star behind the scenes. Fans like the person who they believe the company didn’t give a shit about, but they(the fans) saw something in them, and because they got behind that person, the company was forced to push them.

@@KeepinIt100OFFICIAL Alright, cool. Yeah I agree with that to a degree. I do think he completely over looked that the U.K. was having a wrestling boom period. There were so many promotions, running sold out shows or close to sold out shows for a few years. Now...I feel like NXTUK hurt their own scene there. But over all, I can agree. I try not to compare today's business, to yester years because nothing will ever compare. Joining the patron!!

Disco is right. As far as American wrestling goes it doesn’t matter how hot wrestling is in England or Japan. It’s at a major low point in the US.
