The bad guy with the grenade on stairs happened. Caused controversy as well. The media were asking, "Why does he have so many bullets in him? It must have been an execution!" No, it just that 3 or 4 operators saw the threat independently of each other, and they all took action at the same time. John McAleese described it best, "when theres a situation like that, it's no good looking at each other, wondering who's gonna deal with it. So we all shot him."

Yep yep this. Also to clarify the extraction, 1 hostage was killed trying to exfil with hostages and 1 xray did in fact make it outside to the lawn. He was identified and led away by one of the SAS team. That member returned alone a few seconds later. This was investigated. However as Thatcher had given the order of ' no terrorist is to leave ' iirc no action was taken.
I saw this unfold as a kid, it started my fascination with the SAS.

Two hostages were killed. One prior to, one during the assault. One terrorist survived and was only recently released from prison. He (like the guy killed on the stairs) chickened out and pretended to be a hostage. When he was zip-tied and put on his belly (like all the hostages until positive IDs were made) he was identified as a hostile by the hostages. Rumour has it that an SAS operator picked him up and started to lead him back indoors, with the intention of executing him, before a fellow operator pointed out there were cameras on them and he was reluctantly returned to the lawn and arrested. PM Margaret Thatcher and her husband Dennis later visited the SAS team at Hyde Park Barracks to congratulate them for a job well done. Operators "Snapper" and John McAleese remember Dennis joking "Well done chaps, but you let one of the bastards live."

@Thetasigmaalpha The surviving terrorists name is Fowzi Nejad. He was one of a group seeking independence for Khuzestan province, an oil rich part of southern Iran whose population are mainly Iranian Arabs. The Revolutionary Government of Iran brutally suppressed demonstrations for Independence and jailed many of the protesters. The group that Nejad joined were nationalists, not hard core terrorists like Isis, who foolishly decided to go down the terrorist path. The Iranian government still suppress the people of Khuzestan and anyone else who dares to challenge the Iranian government in any way. As can be seen by their recent brutal treatment of women who wanted to dress in a more western way.
After the siege was ended Nejad was given a life sentence in prison. After 27 years he was released. Normally foreign prisoners are immediately deported, but because Iran would not guarantee his safety he was allowed to stay in the UK. The UK will not deport anyone to a country where that person may be sentenced to death. Because of the nature of his offence he was not granted asylum in the UK, though for practical purposes he was. Which probably means he is not allowed to work. Which in turn means he was getting benefit and assistance with his housing and council taxes from the State. As he is now in his mid sixties he may now receive the State Pension or Pension Credit. It would be a rather sad empty life for him, as although he gets just enough to live on, there would be lots of restrictions on his life.

As for the other terrorist that Buck mentioned.....everybody that was evacuated was ziptied on lawn outside until they could be ID'd. Some of the hostages were yelling that one of the terrorists was there, so they grabbed him. There was unofficial rumour that the boys were going to take him back into the building to finish the job but the news cameras were watching. That of course is completely denied. I can't pin point the interview but it was said that during the Iraq insurgency the door kicking operations went through the roof so that every type of SF unit was doing it. During these times Rangers transformed into a tier 1 unit being a middle ground between conventional and SF units. While at the same time Green Berets were also operating at high tempo in Afghanistan. So at such times one also feels to get the mission over as quickly as possible as there are more targets to hit and there is not enough manpower or time. Thanks for another great video. You even managed to get away with a couple of swears...nice.
If you're looking for a war movie to review that's a little bit different, I'd recommend an Aussie movie called "The Odd Angry Shot". It's about the SASR in the Vietnam war. Not a big budget movie but a good representation of Australian army humour.
    Peace🤙

When I was a Kid I had a subscription to Combat Missions Magazine and there was an article in one of the issues about dealing with threats in buildings and it said Always attack from the top of the building down as it's a bad idea to fight up where the bad guys get trapped like rats and fight to the death. This was sometime in the mid 80's and it's something I've taken away from them since that time.

    • @Goalie002
      @Goalie002 4 месяца назад

Yeah, it was part of British Army Doctrine from post-WW2 through the 80s to attack top down whenever possible for the reasons you said. You can see old training videos where they'd have an MG cover the main exit and the soldiers in the building would shoot through walls and floors on the way down to force the occupiers into the street for the MG crew to take them out. The main problem which was covered as part of the instruction was the fact that it is time consuming and requires a lot of coordination

In the video game America's army the US army's official video game there's actually a mission where they say fight down where you have to gain entry at the top of the building and then fight your way down and it's an old video game from the early 2000s

Larry Vickers said in his Sicario review that full-auto in CQB was a bad idea.
Curious what Tyler's take on this is (as a fellow Delta guy).
Larry was referring to the scene where Emily Blunt uses full auto in the opening scene in the house.

The rappeller got stuck because the SAS purchased some extra climbing rope locally, of a type they hadn’t used before for this task. The rope expanded under the heat of friction during the descent, and this jammed the descender.

The SAS did deploy CS gas, John Mac who deployed the window frame charge and was 30cm/6in from the detonation threw up three times in his mask and had to clear it due to the inhalation of the gas.
The primary rescue targets were PC John Lock and the BBC journalist.
Mac said with the maglites on their MP5 was you aimed down the light and squeezed and made sure you put them down.
The guy with the grenade was shot with 120ish rounds from 3 SAS so they reloaded.
The one that got out and was later identified by the cuffed hostages was being taken back in the building but a news helicopter was overhead.
During the immediate debrief Mac said Dennis Thatcher said “shame you missed one”

The trooper standing behind rusty saw the grenade and butted his gun to the back of the terrorist’s head while warning rusty who then opened up on the guy. It took seconds but the producers spun it out longer. Rusty firmin spoke about the scene in a podcast .I believe the trooper who hit the terrorist was John macaleese ( Mac in the film ) .

To the best of my knowledge, they were already at Hereford practicing as usual. When they got the call to be involved. But there is a lot of stuff out there about the siege, so I could be wrong. But as I understood, they didn't have time to build a full-scale model. They only had lines on the floor. Like looking at something from a bird's-eye view. But I could be wrong. But they got access to the blue prints and help from a janitor oar caretaker or something.
One thing that truly impresses me is,they had to memorize every hostage face and name.So in order not to shot them by accident. That! is truly impressive.Remembering that all that chaos .
