I think wild caught should be for the left to the experienced professionals to create captive bred for rest of us
Wild caught is another ballgame. My first retic is wild caught and I'm being forced to learn a lot VERY quickly just to be able to work with her. I agree to a certain extent but at some point the new keepers will outlive the old and that wild caught knowledge needs to be passed on

I have 2 Surinames. One is about 2 the other just a few months. Both captive bred. They are both very social and gentile as kittens.
Sometimes one like button simply isn't enough! This is one of those times. Really love your mindset man we can definitely see that you put your animals first. And you answered one my questions. Can I (kept reptiles for 20 y) handle keeping my small breeder's bccs while he might be looking for a place where he is aloud to have them again.? Bc he's about to loose them all due to ignorance n fear of landlady. So once more cheers mate...

He is definitely gorgeous! I have wanted a red-tailed BCC for a long time, but I was not aware of the wild caught part of it or of so many things that you described. I am so glad I have seen this video now, I will not even be trying to get one of these gorgeous snakes now. Thank you for devoting so much of this video to promoting USCBB animals. I have 4 BCC's, all CBB except 1 which I believe is farmed/imported as a baby. They were not my first snakes, and I did invest in setting them up properly/ongoing care. But, I've found them 100% problem free in terms of health. 2 of mine are very laid back, and 2 are pretty squirmy but gentle. I think they are just less forgiving, not necessarily more problematic/harder.

Great video man. I'm a huge fan of BCC. I Keep Suriname and Guyana. After the repeated heartbreak of losing snakes to regurge and other issues due to purchasing inexpensive, wild caught animals. I reset, and decided that if I was going to keep these animals, I would do it right and dropped some decent cash on captive born and bred stock. The difference is night and day, wow (also beware of the "farmed" animals. The same thing as wild caught.)
The only thing I would advise keepers that are new to these animals is that there is a difference in their feeding needs. Significant difference in my opinion that does merit discussion. I keep mine warmer and quite a bit more humid than my BCI's and they are thriving. If anyone hasn't already, check out Dav Kaufman's video about BCC and are we keeping them correctly. Very informative. All in all, great video man. Don't worry about bothering people that are doing the wrong thing man. Thanks.

Thanks for a great video. I agree with you completely about wild caught animals, and that we shouldn’t support this trade. My understanding has long been that b.c.cs need higher humidity than some of the other subspecies. I have a b.c. amarali adult: she’s a wonderful snake, and has a great temperament. Interestingly, she is very particular about having her environment kept clean: she once displayed very uncharacteristic bityness - I found that there was some poop in there which I had missed. Once that was removed, she was her usual gentle self!

Boas get alot more hype than ball p pythons cuz they're picky eaters and can be snapy boas are sweet like puppys and will eat whatever rodent you give them
In October I picked up a suriname the store owner said was wild caught. It was probably only at the most a few months old they had it in shop for 2 months. So I'm guessing it was a new born baby when it was shipped here. She is doing absolutely fantastic and I'm assuming that is because she was so young and not exposed to much. I didn't know she was wild caught till I took her out and fell in love with her. She has really high peaks, very light colored, and alot of pink down her sides. I usually don't like buying wild caught but she was to beautiful to pass up. She is also one of the most docile snakes I have ever had.
The only thing I have found with BCC is that they can not take the fluctuations in temperature as much as BCI. Other than that, over the past 27 years, I have had no problems apart from a yearling that regurgitated his meal, but thankfully, he was fine,but it stank my whole room out. Lost my favourite snake a 23 year old Suriname in June.Just woke up one morning to find her dead, which was most definitely age related! Just stay away from wild caught, or even farmed animals, and you should have no problems!
I completely agree with you that wild caught red tail boas do not do good in captivity. I completely agree with you on the topic of wild caught red tail boas.
I took care of a friend's red tail for 2 years. She never bit us, but we fed her in a different container than she lived. So she didn't take our hands for food.
I'm getting my first boa (3rd snake, 5 th reptile) in a couple weeks. A captive bred female 8 week old Suriname Red Tail and I can't wait!

Real red tail boa is common here in Brazil. I find interesting that many breeders from Europe and USA talk about problems with this animals but we here in Brazil just dont have those problems., And we have many climate patterns around our big country, Very cold, Very hot, high and low humidity, yet is the most easy snake of all here.
I think they are super easy to keep and maintain. I’ve said that for a long time. For some reason they have gotten this reputation for being super hard and difficult. I think it has more to do with the importation process being filthy then anything else. The import process is usually very time consuming in. These snakes are kept in pure filth for a long time. Even if the import process is clean, most of the time, the people importing them are not the best keepers either. They have large groups of wild, caught animals from all around the world. It is very easy for them to spread diseases amongst the whole group. That is a different situation than what you will experience being able to access them directly.

I just know loss of habitat in Central and South America is happening at a alarming rate, so I'd like to see specific locality Guyana and Surinam breeding pairs, etc Brazil, Peru and that way we could preserve specific locality and species and cut down on or cut out imports of certain species
100%, but unfortunately more people who get these guys have no business owning them. And if we do import, the conditions should be required to be to higher standards
@@JasonsExoticReptiles I 100% agree, maybe there should be aza credited lic for anyone who imports wild caught specimens and I also am open to capturing and breeding wild caught in their country of orgin, and importing the captive born offspring and either keep tje parents for breeding or even releasing id game for. Its how we get specific Louisiana locality specific speckled kingsnakes, capture and breed wild caught, keep baby's release parents back to their homes
This is a great video Jason, and I've been extremely interested in getting a boa at the end of this year if my landlord allows it(fingers crossed for that haha), this really helps to guide me in the right direction.
ideally, I would LOVE to care for a red tail boa, but just as pet keeper I definitely do not want a wild caught and I'm too inexperienced . it's such a shame how so many are taken from the wild in such poor conditions. they are incredible snakes though! In your opinion, which boa locale/subspecies is the best as pets, personality and temperament wise but still reasonable to find and afford?
Common BCI or pick a bci morph that you like and go for it. They come in all kinds of colors, very hardy, and make awesome pets

Boa constrictor constrictor.. never heard this before it has always been just one constrictor.
Its recently changed to just boa constrictor (BC) and boa imperator (BI) from boa constrictor constrictor (BCC) and boa constrictor imperator (BCI). It’s not official in my opinion, but seems to be heading that way
My boas and pythons are thriving in the huge outdoor enclosure I built for them.. it's also summer time in Florida so it's hot and humid, I feel like they hate when it's time to come back inside😂

@@7shameik they love it.. I built a really nice one indoors too, but the outdoor enclosures is larger. Funny thing is, they have all this space but pretty much chill on the same shelf together🤷🏾. It's 5x5 and a little over 5 ft tall. Basically a big snake cube, I want to make it taller so I don't have to bend while I'm in there.
My wild cough Suriname boa Squeezy is the best pet in my life and the nicest animal. Today is her 7th birthday :) ok I go on Watching the video bc I just started.

What guidelines for handling a BCC would you give in a (human-optimal-climate) room at 68-70F and maybe 40% humidity? Ie what would you suggest as the longest time that wouldn't stress the snake?
I'd say about 15 minutes or so. Think of how long you would feel comfortable on a 60 degree day outside naked haha. I'd say thats about the same.

I had snakes since I was a little girl they were my dads what I learned is that owning a snake eventually you are going to get bit it comes with owning them snakes are not out to get you there are two reasons a constrictor will bite one is a defensive bite it's trying to protect itself we are way bigger then them the second would be food response you never want to associate you're hand with food get them when they are babies and handle them a half hour every day unless they are in shed don't power feed you're snakes feeding you have 2 choices frozen thawed or live we fed live because it was enrichment for the snakes I mean they eat live in the wild so also feed them a variety of food most importantly feed you're snakes the right size prey items as they grow when they are babies feed them once a week when they get alittle older space out the meals like every two weeks or three weeks and when they are full grown feed them once a month the snakes do require vitamins and Calcium wet the prey item and sprinkle some vitamins and calcium you can buy at a pet store snakes do require going to the vet incase they get sick or parasites what have you watch for odd behaviors that's a good indication you're snake maybe sick schedule vet visits to catch whatever you're snake has before it gets to serious I'm planning on getting an exotic pet license so I can buy some snakes myself I miss owning snakes I have a cool trick for anyone that wants to get a snake so after you're snake sheds go to your bathroom take out all your soap shampoo conditioner out of you're bath tub and put lukewarm water in you're bath tub put you're snake in the bathtub and let it swim the lukewarm water will stimulate you're snake into going to the bathroom so it will poop and pee in the tub instead of it's enclosure drain the tub clean the pee and poop rinse you're snake dry it off the only thing you have to clean is take out the shedding and do water changes boom clean snake enclosure every time you're very welcome
Sometimes it is as if people underrestimate the importance of disinfecting enclosures. Do you think you could make a video about what chemicals you use and show in clear view how you use them? Such as if you would give plastic plants a chemical bath or just spray them etc. I myself have a lot of room (too much tbh) to improve. Learning →why← various chemicals works would be super useful. Yes. Ill have to make a video on it. I've mentioned it in the past but there is a balance. You really need humidity but good airflow which totally contradict each other.
The thing with BCCs are...alot of them are still imported, unlikely the almost exclusively CBB BCIs, so with wild caught, you add in a host of issues. I've owned both BCI and BCC and honestly, other than color and evetually size, there isn't too much of a difference between them.
Keep also in mind we separate them based on geographical names like suriname or guyana or colombia...snakes don't know political borders and there is a good amount of overlap in the ranges of this species.
I think so much of the bad press BCC gets is simply due to them still coming in wild caught...anyone who remembers retics and burmese pythons have a bad rep in the 90s because most of those were imports...now we CBB and they are great snakes.

Do BCCs actually grow larger than BCIs? Or is that just a myth?
About the same in my opinion. Just like bci, some bcc localities grow larger than others.
Over the 25 years I've been in the hobby i have had some nightmare experiences with WC animals. So much so that I will purchase them any longer. Eventually since I am just a hobbyist & not a breeder. I felt as though I was involved in something morally wrong. With captive bred i feel as though I'm giving an animal, which was meant to be a pet, a good home. With WC i felt more like i was imprisoning an animal that was stolen...similar to the slave trade.( that may be a little extreme but u get what im saying. )

I heard true red tails tend to be more nervous and not as chill as the BCI. Even as adults they squirm and hold on really tight.

Hey guys, I have a bci of 7 years old, she was all fine till 2 days ago when started laying all day in her waterdish, she came out once in 2 days. No mites for as far as I can see, does any one have any idea what can cause this or is she just having a good time?
Should just pile the water but it's usually one or a combo if needing hides, higher humidity, mites or temps need to be adjusted

Possibly. All wc are imports but some imports are cb or farmed. These sometimes do a little better, but typically still get imported under poor conditions

I love Peruvians. They’re all pretty awesome macaroons far certain my favorite.

The problem is not enough captive breed available and much more expensive then wild caught. Breed more of them and sell the for less and you'll destroy the wild caught game
Its a simple concept but the problem is that we get sick and unhealthy imports and breeding them is very difficult. I'm going to say that 95% of those imports people buy for that cheap price will die in the first year. So doe it make sense to buy a 300 import or a 600 cbb?

I NEED HELP!! So my neighbour kicked there son out he has snakes which he was able to take with him apart from his boa she's a big big girl (so much bigger than my python) but she is super gentle her viv was filthy so I cleaned it and changed her hide to the warm side because she was always cold, I have 3 loud children 🙈 she came from a very quite home, now I've tried to feed her 3 times and she's not eaten it's been 3-4 weeks any help would be greatly appreciated
Also I was told she is a red tailed boa but looking at the one with you my one looks diffrent she has orange and speckled black bits running down her sides she does have a red tail and also she very wrinkled like she has bend bumps and on them her scales are picking outwards, he said she's 8 years old but I've lived here for 5 years and she's stayed 8 this whole time 🤣🙈 is there a way of actually telling her age 😊

if theyre importing for the sole reason of sales then yes you CAN shame them and should. thats the exact opposite of what we want.--
Good stuff. I always wonder why the pricing for BCC boas are so different across the board. I see an array of reputable breeders around the world and pricing has me wondering. I refuse to look at, go on websites, etc, of a few breeders in the Northeast region of the US.
Another thing gets me wondering is why are Guyana boas so cheap in comparison to Suriname's. Not even Pokigron's in this equation, just general Suriname's are 2x - 3x the price of Guyana's. Peruvians are moderately high in pricing in comparison to all BCC's. I do have to say, in all do respect, your Pucallpa, Peruvian's pricing is extremely high in comparison to other Pucallpa breeders. Even Iquitos boas are extremely high in price.
every breeder has the same sales pitch, which no direct offense to you. I've watched you for years and have a ton of respect for your work, knowledge, experience, etc. But, every sales pitch is the same.
I've been breeding for 20+ yrs, I have so and so's bloodline, my facility is top notch, my facility is optimal environmentally to emulate the wild conditions, ie: temps, humidity, etc.
Almost like everything is to perfect, to good to be true, in a sense. If this makes sense. So i wonder if everybody has similar pricing and one breeder has the same lineage of parents from the guru's who started this 20 - 30 yrs ago, and uses the original guys name and lineage as their sales pitch.
So picking and choosing to buy from any breeder across the board for a specific boa, Pucallpa for ex, why does ones prices double or even triple compared to the majority of prices when everybody says they all have the same lineage / bloodlines,
I've seen Pucallpa, Peruvians sell for $ 800.00 - $1200.00 when yours list for $ 2,000.00 and the parents etc, bloodlines come from Rio or Russo etc. If everybody has the same bloodlines, how does anyone pick a snake when all descriptions are very similar but huge price differences between breeders.
I have been wondering these things for so many yrs. I had Pucallpa, Peruvians, one Iquitos and a couple of Suriname's some yrs ago and my Peruvians were a fraction of some breeders pricing. If breeders say the lineage is from legends like Gus, Vin etc, are we really getting any more or less of a quality animal if we choose to go with the cheaper animal than say one 3x the cheaper priced ones.
I think the bcc pricing for specific really depends on the current demand and more importantly how many are being imported. Guyana tend to be imported more than suriname. Perus are no more import. Then others like Brazilian and colombian. Overall I've seen prices go up and up on all the bcc stuff. It will eventually level of and I belive we are about there. Regarding the male that I sold for 2k, keep in mind that it was a 2 year old almost ready to breed male. Babies sold for about 1300-1500. I think babies this year will sell for about the same.
Ultimately supply and demand drives most commodity markets including reptiles. The demand is about the same for guyana and suriname but you can get a suriname easily. A little less demand for peru mainly because most people don't even know what they are, but also very hard to find. I know of a few breeders who I KNOW for a fact have cross blood animals selling them as pure. I also know of a few who have diseases and mites running crazy through their animals yet people praise them as the best out there. Really just comes down to the buyer and how informed they are.
People are willing to knowingly pay more from me (not always more) because there is a trust factor that you can't put a price on. In that same instance, there are things that I do not do and things that I won't risk to make sure my collection and animals are clean and healthy.
I tend to price my morphs and things you can get from 10 other people tomorrow at about market price, sometimes lower. Things that are harder to find and I dont really want to dump or don't really care if they never sell i tend to price on the higher end. Mainly because i don't need to sell and don't really care if I sell or keep, but the prices are what I would sell for if that makes sense.
Then you have to think, are the prices really expensive if people are buying or are the other prices just too cheap? Again circling back to supply and demand, trust, reputation etc.
Dude this sucks…you’re correct. How do we address your concern. Don’t lie. It needs to be about the animals not about selling….be a snake advocate.
Unfortunately I don’t think it can be stopped without some type of extreme law/regulation that impacts everything. Then the conditions will only get worse because people will move to doing things like shipping in ways that are unsafe. General awareness it be best solution in my opinion. The awareness that the animal is probably going to die may defer people from buying. But that said, many people will ignore the warnings and impulse buy regardless.
Thats real rich saying dont support wild caught, buy from breeders, when breeders like yourself sell for 1k + an animal just because you can. Maybe breeders should bring prices for BCCs down if its truely about doing whats best for wild population...what a concept.
Technically I don’t breed any of the BCC that can be imported anymore so this comment doesn’t really apply to me, but think about it this way. it took years of work and loss to learn how to acclimate a WC boa and then breed them in captivity. There are only a hand full of CBB litters of bcc born every year. You really think it makes sense for a breeder to sell them for the same proce as WC imports or Farmed babies that are likely to be covered in internal and external parasites and die on you in 6 months?
I think you comment is very one sided, not taking into account the years or time put into acclimating, raising, then then successfully breeding the animals. If that’s not worth the extra money to guarantee you a healthy animal then by all means, spend $600 on a WC animal.

If you have 10 females, you're breeding, and you have bred them over the past 10 ywars, youd have produced around 1500 babies on the low end....1.5mill from breeding 10 snakes over 10 years and thats at 1k each (with giving females an off year everytime).....yeah...cant imagine why wild caught imports are still a problem...many breeders are breeding much more than this. I dont feel my statement is one sided. I feel like you are the one looking at this from one side only. Your statement "you really think breeders should sell for same price as wc?" Is the reason I say that. Wild caught IS so high in price because of breeders taking advantage. If breeders started selling thousands and thousands of BCCs for 500 dollars, WC wouldnt be 600 anymore, they would be 250. Want a prime example? Look at the savanah monitor. You can pick them up for 20 dollars a pop wild caught/farm bred why? Because you can get captive bred for under 100. If CBB were held at 1k a pop, wild caught would be selling for much MUCH more.
So much wrong with beginners buying wild caught red tailed boas for pets. People purchase wild caught baby guyana Red Tailed Boas for two hundred dollars at a reptile I saw. WOW! That's cheap. People only prefer to purchase wild boas becuase if is cheaper. It is incredibly harmful to the animal unless a boa constrictor expert purchases the wild caught red tail boa. If someone wants a personal pet, just a pet and only a pet they need to purchase a captive bred baby boa constrictor from a good breeder like you. Captive bred baby boas are easier to socialize and get them okay with humans holding them.
