Wadjet Eye Games Holy crap, you guys made new game?? I hate that i can't watch all this video yet, but as i crunched the entire Blackwell series, playing Unavowed is now unavoidable.
In a few months no one will remember this mediocre story-driven "game" as we remember monkey island, the dig, fate of atlantis, quest for glory, etc. etc.
Unavowed was indeed a great game. One of the first in a long time that left me really wanting more afterward. I hope they do more with the characters in another game It'd be great to interact with them again even if they're just cameos.
Thanks for reviewing this. I love most of the Wadjet Eye games though I don’t often get them at release. I might have to get this one sooner rather than later though. I really like how they’ve combined more RPG elements with the usual adventure fare. Also, I’m so excited you have a cameo in this.
I got my first games from them at a discount, but now I feel it’s my obligation to support them. The quality of their games and the hours of quality entertainment they have given me are worth the measly 15 dollars they ask for a new game.

My husband and I started watching your videos recently, and I just wanted to comment and say THANK YOU for recommending this game. I was so convinced that I went ahead and bought it right after. I've been obsessively playing it since and I absolutely LOVED the game. Thank you SO SO SO much! 💕💕💕 This game is amazing and I'm hoping against hope for a sequel (I know being an indie developer is hard but 🤞🤞🤞)

I am a big fan of Urban Fantasy. I really like the concept of mixing the mundane every day world with magical things that are sometimes more, sometimes less, pronounced and out in the open. For example the Hollows books do a great job of showing off a modern world where magic is nonethless a big part of it with all the problems and conveniences that brings along.
@@Soradakanizat I have not played the game but I have heard a lot of good things about it. I am not sure if I would call it urban fantasy as it is missing a lot of not most of the classical fantasy elements but the style is very unique for sure.
I just can't stop revisiting this video. This was the first time I've ever heard of urban fantasy. A lover of fantasy (epic and dystopian, etc.) I have now become intrigued about this subgenre!
It's nice to hear so much enthusiasm for a game like this. You clearly had some mild gripes (such as dialogue not transitioning between screens) but obviously they were not enough to make the game lose its gush-worthiness. Not everything needs to be torn apart; sometimes experiences are just good and the flaws barely stand out. Also, while I haven't played the game myself, I agree with you about the quality of the art.
I love this game!! Mandana's voice is so soothing and I love Eli's backstory. I wish Logan got more story and or development other than his drinking problem. I'm going to get into the Blackwell series because I'm new to it and it looks interesting!
I played this game due to your recommendation, and I LOVE IT!!! The plot, the puzzles, the humor, and how different it is based on the decisions you make. The trip to Chinatown always makes me crave Chinese food, that's the one downside haha!
Myself and a couple of friends did a playthrough of this game over the course of a few weekends. Honestly it's perfect for doing that. Being able to take turns selecting the dialogue and arguing over the tough decisions was really enjoyable. I highly recommend this game as well. It scratched an itch I didn't realize I had, and I wish there were more games like it being developed! Also you NEED to play through the Blackwell games. I think you'd really enjoy them.
I've just finished the Blackwell Series and I recommend it completely! I had a few frustrating moments but nothing like a bit of preserverance to walk past those hard moments when you are stuck! Refreshing and original story with memorable and likable characters. Shed a few tears at the end, I confess!!! Will be playing Unavowed and other Wadjet Eye games very soon.
Unavowed is likely Wadjet Eye Games best game to date, though I really enjoyed playing Technobabylon, too. Those are my top two games that I've played from Wadjet Eye.
I know you don't cover recent adventure games too often, but I just want to say it's always a huge treat when you do. I love this video, I love the one you did back on Dropsy, and Thimbleweed Park, it's always just really fascinating to hear your take on new games as well. Keep up the amazing work, Roses.

Bruno Fonseca I support good games, not just the developers. There are a ton of games coming out every month across all platforms and I'd rather not blow my monthly gaming budget on a dud because I just blindly supported a Dev without checking out the product first.
Zazzaro703 that’s a very fair point and I agree with it. I may have my perception skewed because wadjet eye have been launching great games for a long time now, thus my “support the developers” pitch. But you’ll see his is also a great game... enjoy.
the only thing that bugged me was the dragon teeth puzzle. I was so overthinking it that I missed the simple solution. I like how you get to discuss with two followers for hints on what to do next. I also like the scattered dialog between the following companions.
Bought this game as soon as i watched the review, but played this weekend. I wish i had done it sooner, so i could watch the commentaries of all the scenes already.
I loved the Unavowed. And yes "Biowarian". I love the KOTOR series. Maybe this is the reason I enjoyed the game so much (tho story wise they have nothing in common). Yes as in KOTOR after a short time you don´t even notice that your main char isn´t voiced.
Oh my gosh! I didn't even know Wadjet Eye had a new game out. I probably would have bought it regardless, but your review definitely seals the deal and I am super hyped. Congrats on the cameo appearance -- it is very fitting that you'd make an appearance in a classic-style adventure game like this.
Thanks so much for bringing this to my attention. Big fan of Wadjet Eye and absolutely loved the Blackwell series, so this is a definite purchase for me.
This is why i love your Channel. It keeps me steeped in adventure game options for future play. If ever i need one i breeze through your back catalogue to see if there's one i want to play, then i watch your review to be sure :3
Thanks for the review! I know it's rare you talk about modern games but I wish you would do it more often - or at least for the (indie) adventure games (Hero-U?). Saw this pop up and pretty much being ignored by everyone else so I'm glad it got the thumbs up from someone who loves adventure games. Looks great. Goes on the wishlist. With a little bit more priority than most other games.
I'm so glad I accidentally found your channel! You seem to like the same kind of games I do and I've gotten some great suggestions for new games! So, thank you!
When I saw this on my subscription page I wondered why it looked so familiar but as soon as started watching I was like, "This is the game I auditioned for!!!!" I'm glad you at least got a cameo. Hopefully, I'll get a part next time I audition.
The mish-mashing of different sorts of supernaturals gives me Mage: The Ascension vibes. In that game, of course, everyone is a mage, but what _kind_ of mage they are - and what their area of expertise is - can vary widely. You could have a practitioner of Western style High Ritual Magic hanging out with a more agrarian style witch, a mad scientist, a shaman, a mystic martial artist, and a cyberpunk-style Reality Hacker. It's great. And because it runs the gamut between all these cultural and philosophical sources, a Mage game could lead to many different kinds of stories. Dealing with ghosts, fey, demons, nature spirits, men in black, and even more esoteric threats and mysteries. It's not merely a game that tackles the obvious supernatural tropes, but is a lot more abstract and weird. It's worth noting that Mage: The Ascension first came out in '93, and so was a contemporary to a lot of alternative culture; Vertigo Comics of the time especially gives you the impression of the high concept weirdness you'd be in for, if you really wanted to go there. Stuff like Untouchables, Doom Patrol, Neil Gaiman's Sandman, Alan Moore era Swamp Thing, Shade the Changing Man, etc. Even a bit of later stuff, like James Robinson's run of Starman. And obviously various bits of pulp stories, cyberpunk, classical fantasy, and modern conspiracy theory, mixed with Real Life philosophy, religion, and alternative sciences. Mage: The Ascension is a game about belief, and how it shapes people, actions, and the world. It's a game where HOW a mage character uses their Magick is as important - if not more so - than what Magick they do. The beliefs of a mage flow into everything they do, and determine their tools, their magical style, and their overriding world view. Ultimately leading to the central tension of the Mage setting: in a world where Belief influences Reality, those who have different ideas about what Reality is or should be inevitably come into conflict. The present day cold war between mages of the Nine Mystic Traditions and the Technocratic Union is merely one expression and iteration of a conflict going on since the beginning of time.
I can see some the elements of past games , it like they bring in all the characters from previous wadjet games and making new interesting story too , i be adding this to the ever growing collection i have of their games
I love all of the Wadjet Eye games I've played. (Especially the Blackwell series!) I thought Unavowed was absolutely excellent. Probably their best so far.
funny, I commented on your Top 11 Retro Adventure Games about I would choose any David Gilbert game... yet, you surprised me with this one. Actually I paused the video because I had to buy it!
Very good game, it came to me by surprise since I expected a longer development. During the review the graphics stand up so well against the other games shown. Like all of Wadjet Eye's recent games it strikes me as having the quality level of the old Sierra and Lucasart games but playable without getting stuck.
Just played it. This game is great, to me, another great step in the adventure genre, with multiple persons to choose on your side (yeah, i know this has been before, but it never felt that good) on the fly. I love the interaction and dialogue between each of the characters. And you made a great review. Also the Jazzy Soundtrack is excellent. All i can say is: Wadjet Eye, pls don't stop making adventures. BTW, got my copy of Strangeland today :)
I just discovered your channel, I saw the I have no mouth and I must scream review, now this one, and it's really well done ! I do recommend all the games by this studio, they are so awesome !
From how you handled talking about different aspects of this modern adventure game, it sounds a bit similar to the Dresden Files in how diversified the mystical creature population is. Also, how the protagonist goes on different missions to investigate crimes and keep relationships "simpatico" between the different races is a classic RPG trope, which happens to appear in the Dresden Files. I have to admit though, that montage of the seven races and your voice cameo in the game were my favorite bits of the video.
ohh my brother and me had a wonderful time playing the blackwell series together, it's great to see a new game by wadjet eye!! thank you for making this video and letting us know about it!
It's like you read my mind. Saw this game released on gog and thought "Why do I think of roses watching the screenshots and reading the plot? Would be cool if she reviewed it". I guess I know you better than I imagined. Great review, will now have to buy the game ;)
Thanks for the review. I ended up picking up the game based on your recommendation and loved it! Good story, fun puzzles, and simple but enjoyable game play. Hoping for a sequel or, at least, a spin-off at a different Unavowed headquarters (Unavowed: Miami! or Unavowed: Antarctica...where the weather is cold but the devils are hot!)
I was already interested in the game, but this review was enthusing! By your description, it sounds like a game that I might rather enjoy. Thank you for the review! ^_^
So you mentioned Kathy Rain in another video, and from there I started looking at related adventure game titles on Steam. Saw Unavowed, thought it seemed right up my alley, so I bought it. Holy crap, I love it! The story is really engaging; I stayed up way too late because I just wanted to do one more scene. I've never played adventure games; I like puzzles, but I'm not that great at them, so when I read this game was more on the story side, I decided it was a good way for me to get my feet wet. I only struggled on rare occasions, and almost always because I was missing something. The only puzzle I had trouble with was the 'old man snake dog man' one, but I'd say one hard puzzle in 11-12 hours is pretty good for a newbie! And then, while I was watching the credits, color me surprised when I see *your* name in there! I honestly hadn't recognized you back there, sorry. XD But it was the perfect finish. Thank you for introducing me to this game.
Instant purchase day one:) was not disappointed in it, but the end... well, it's kinda wadjet games trend, I guess. Still great and enjoyable game overall! Thank you for review
Looks cool, though as the review went on, it made me think about what I loved from Gabriel Knight which seems missing here (not a bad thing, as this is it's own thing). For me, a big draw on GK is how the supernatural is all behind the scenes and so feel plausible in the otherwise realistic setting. From the outside it just looks like some killer using voodoo props. It's only when you fully investigate that you realize what's happening and get the supernatural stuff. Whilst on this game, it feels a little goofy with this supernatural team who goes around with swords and fireballs, which is a bit of a shame for me as I find the GK approach really evocative. Either way, this looks worthwhile as a play.
I finished this game long before I played the Blackwell series. I have somewhat mixed feelings about the first few Blackwell games, though I still like them quite a bit, but they do continue to get better.
I should get this game soon. I've been working on my own game and I didn't want to play anything on my pc after working on it all day! Now it's finished woop! It's more like Broken Sword but with earlier 90s graphics but with a bigger dosing of humour. Trailer is on my channel, I won't link it here, it's bad enough I've gone into self promoting mode! Nice cameo!
Superb overview, nice and in depth from the adventure game maestro that is PUR! Congratulations on the cameo too. Heard you reference the Persona series - any chance you'd give some PUR insight into that series one day? You could call it PURsona and pun pundits everywhere would rejoice!
I loved the Blackwell series. At first it was difficult to get into, but each game was like watching an artist learn their style and at the end I was completely emotionally invested.
I only recently discovered this. I loved it. I'm not the biggest fan of point and click adventures but I was totally absorbed in this until the end. It one not to miss.
I picked this up on the recommendation from Dodger upon discovering it was on sale. Curious, I checked it out and played through it in only a couple of days (which is currently unusual for me). I enjoyed it immensely, playing the Male Bartender origin and loved...well, most of it. A couple of the puzzles actually stumped me, which led to some serious frustration. However, the remainder of the game, the artwork, the voice acting, the story structure, everything else was top notch. I really hope Wadjet does something more with the Unavowed in the future. Your review was great and I felt myself agreeing with pretty much every point. As I said, my only complaint was that some of the puzzles seemed a little nonsensical in their solutions. Otherwise, the game was top notch.
Apparently your me because I did the exact same thing. Picked up on Dodgers recommendation, blew through it and played as the bartender (although female) came here when I spotted Roses in the credits.
Thx 4 this review. I also have played entire Blackwell series and loved it, and I think Unavowed brings another top notch storytelling. Highly recommend playing Blackwell series if you like this game. There's also another cameo from Blackwell and that person actually has a part in puzzle solving as well. And thx to this game, I finally learned the profession for those "ghost whisperer" thingie here are called Bestower. Speaking of that however... Got a bit confused with existence of another bestower in this game, particularly with the ending of Blackwell finale. A slight spoiler btw, why there's still ghosts in Unavowed, tho I'm guessing all those in this game are fresh made ones since the event from Blackwell finale. That aside, there is a slight downer with this game, the soundtrack. They are beautiful, tho most of them felt way too moody/nostalgic feelings, even there are scenes that doesn't really fit with choices of the tunes, like the bad ending for example. That aside, really recommend this game. Really hope seeing sequels to this game. :D
The blackwell series is really good i recommend it. i don't think I've heard of Unavowed before now. this video did a great job conveying the experience and i found it interesting. thank you for your time and effort making this.
Hm. Thanks for reviewing this. I loved the Blackwell series, but after reading all the comments on GOG on this one I wasn't feeling like buying it. I might have to reconsider.
Just finished my female bartender worst ending ever playthrough and I find it amazing how many alternate routes there seem to be. Great game! :) My favourite moments were Calli learning about whammying, meeting Kay-Kay "in the flesh" and the big twist in the middle! :)
I was going to get it regardless because I have seen nothing but praise for the game (Though most of it retweeted by Dave Gilbert himself, teehee) but you gushing about it is just icing on the cake I want it Next paycheque Thanks for the recommend
I love the whole Neil Gaiman esque "there's a secret, magical world going on in modern times that we're all oblivious to" premise for an adventure game. I hope they pump out some sequels. Plenty of interesting lore worth exploring.
Unavowed is dope. I'm generally not big on replayability because I have a huge enough backlog of games as is, but this is a game I plan to replay again at least once.
I made the same realization about all story-ideas being used through folkloristics. Most stories and plot elements are so adaptable, that I wouldn't be surprsed if the last original story-idea came about at the dawn of the bronze age.
Never was a big fan on adventure games but I like to look at them. Think you will ever do a lets play of it? maybe with a Lazy Gamer in toe? Regardless, good vid PUR!
I really like the Blackwell games. They story they told was interesting, and the puzzles were tame and grounded even though this made the games a bit too easy for hardcore adventure fans. This feels like it's going a bit way overboard with the supernatural element which I am not sure I like, but I will probably give it a chance.
OMG I love the Blackwell games. Those are easily the best point and click games I've played since the Syberia games. In fact, their better than Syberia. Although Syberia is prettier, Blackwell just has such a great story. I can't wait to try this one. Thanks for the heads up PUR.
The carefully detailed atmosphere in the scenery reminds me of good anime series. The japanese do a great job meking you feel almost as far as smell . And the almost mathematical perspective in drawing. This game does just that.
You know, it's true: I've been playing this game myself (thanks for the recommendation!) and it does remind me a lot of the Callahan's pnc game. I've especially been thinking of the music and set pieces from the Transylvania mission in that game. Fitting, I guess =3
6:29 yeah, this has some serious Mass Effect vibes, minus space. Bioware were at their best in KOTOR though, it has less action'y combat than ME but AMAZING dialogue (only second to Planescape: Torment) and brilliant atmosphere. Dragon Age was just like a darker, edgier version of Baldur's Gate.
Damn, this game looks gorgeous! I have to pick it up at some point. You compared it to Gabriel Knight and that's my all time favourite so, yeah, going to look into this!
So, Roses, Shawn Clingman here...love SIERRA games, never got through many of them, but a lot...what would you recommend are best point and click adventure games on STEAM (working my way through FATE OF ATLANTIS)?
Love the Blackwell series and play all the Wadjet Eye games (eventually). This is possibly my least favourite by them. That said i still like it. Up until this point they always stuck to the very traditional point-and-click set up. This felt like a fresh and new twist on it. So while they missed the mark for me, i can totally appreciate the experimentation and can't wait for future games! (including the ones out i haven't played yet ...i've been going backwards recently. not forwards.) For anyone who is interested but doesn't know where the should start? I would say it 100% doesn't matter pick whatever story looks most appealing to you. The Blackwell games should ideally be played in order? but the first one is noticably more dated than the others. Shardlight (post-apocolyptic) and Technobabylon (sci-fi/cuberpunk ...noir?) were particular favourites of mine.
Just poking in to say thanks for the review! Been a big fan for years. And thanks again for the cameo. :)
Just want to say, you folks do great work. Point-and-click adventure fans are lucky to have you producing games like this.
The game looks absolutely gorgeous. You did wonders with the visuals and I am sure it's a great game altogether too!

I think Wadjet Eye makes and publishes the best current point and click games. Dare I say better than Ron Gilbert's and Schafer's latest offerings.

John O ́neil That is true! The game was more based on real life things than actual fantasy themed. Nonetheless a great game.

He gives a great performance. It's so convincing that I had NO IDEA it was him until the credits.

OMG is PUR actually a cameo in a video game?!?
I can see some the elements of past games , it like they bring in all the characters from previous wadjet games and making new interesting story too , i be adding this to the ever growing collection i have of their games
I would have liked to see Joey
the universe of this game is actually good. it's stable and very well knit, that in itself makes the characters stable.
Congrats on the cameo, and it looks like a very fun game indeed, I'll keep an eye on it. Great review.
Awesome video and review as ever :) keep up the stellar work as always!.
Thank you for not spoiling the MC and yea Im glad you loved it !!!
Thanks for reviewing this. I somehow did not know about this game and it is awesome.
I was already interested in the game, but this review was enthusing! By your description, it sounds like a game that I might rather enjoy. Thank you for the review! ^_^
One exception to that voiceless character thing is Heroine's Quest. The protagonist doesn't say her name, for obvious reasons, but she does speak.
2:15 - "что нуб" - "what noob" on the wall to the right o_O
ну. странно))
Wow this game looks great. Also am happy you got to have a part in this as well. Congrats!
I loved the Blackwell series. At first it was difficult to get into, but each game was like watching an artist learn their style and at the end I was completely emotionally invested.
Also, have you ever thought of reviewing or doing a playthrough of the Dark Eye adventure games?
First game that you've reviewed that I really want to play.
I am SO loving this game! It brings me back to my younger gaming days.
Congrats on getting a cameo!
Great game! :)
My favourite moments were Calli learning about whammying, meeting Kay-Kay "in the flesh" and the big twist in the middle! :)
Just played Shardlight and came to see if you've talked about it... But now I have to buy this one as well!
I was going to get it regardless because I have seen nothing but praise for the game (Though most of it retweeted by Dave Gilbert himself, teehee) but you gushing about it is just icing on the cake
I want it
Next paycheque
Thanks for the recommend
I love the whole Neil Gaiman esque "there's a secret, magical world going on in modern times that we're all oblivious to" premise for an adventure game. I hope they pump out some sequels. Plenty of interesting lore worth exploring.
Unavowed is dope. I'm generally not big on replayability because I have a huge enough backlog of games as is, but this is a game I plan to replay again at least once.
Looks like a pretty fun game. Great review!
I made the same realization about all story-ideas being used through folkloristics. Most stories and plot elements are so adaptable, that I wouldn't be surprsed if the last original story-idea came about at the dawn of the bronze age.
The visual style is definitely slick.
Never was a big fan on adventure games but I like to look at them.
Think you will ever do a lets play of it? maybe with a Lazy Gamer in toe?
Regardless, good vid PUR!
Fun fact: I was going to audition to voice Kaykay in this game but I completely forgot and missed the deadline. Was really looking forward to it to.
You should totally play Shardelight. I think you found it interesting. Also I really like your cameo in Unavowed.
Well, this is your opinion. Let me have mine.
I really like the Blackwell games. They story they told was interesting, and the puzzles were tame and grounded even though this made the games a bit too easy for hardcore adventure fans. This feels like it's going a bit way overboard with the supernatural element which I am not sure I like, but I will probably give it a chance.
Enjoyed the Blackwell games and was a little tempted. After this review I definitely need to check it out!
This game is definitely on my want list. I have a backlog of Wadjet Eye games I need to work through.
This was a very well done review. Thanks.
Have you played Technobabylon? Same publisher and a great point click adventure in a similar style to Unavowed but more cyberpunk.
Hooked me in after that Kings Quest reference.
Cool to see your review on this! Such a great game for us point and click buffs ;) Cheers!
This game looks brilliant! Reminds me of the Dresden Files books, I'll have to give this a try! Great review! Thank you!
Damn, this game looks gorgeous! I have to pick it up at some point. You compared it to Gabriel Knight and that's my all time favourite so, yeah, going to look into this!
Looks fun! Good job on the cameo, haha
So, Roses, Shawn Clingman here...love SIERRA games, never got through many of them, but a lot...what would you recommend are best point and click adventure games on STEAM (working my way through FATE OF ATLANTIS)?
Just gonna say that I SHRIEKED when I found your cameo! :3
(including the ones out i haven't played yet ...i've been going backwards recently. not forwards.)
For anyone who is interested but doesn't know where the should start? I would say it 100% doesn't matter pick whatever story looks most appealing to you. The Blackwell games should ideally be played in order? but the first one is noticably more dated than the others. Shardlight (post-apocolyptic) and Technobabylon (sci-fi/cuberpunk ...noir?) were particular favourites of mine.
