  • Philosophy has been revered for many millennia across the world. Apart from the various forms of religion, philosophy has provided us with answers to existential questions that humanity has asked itself since the dawn of time. Unfortunately, it hasn’t had the same luck with the Muslim nation and more specifically with the Arab Muslim world. As a science, it has been looked down on and frowned upon by Muslim scholars since the Golden Age of Islam. And this position has led to the same disrespect applied by modern Arab society onto the science and its relevance to our earthly life.
In this video we look at the negative perspective that exists for Arab Muslims and with that exploration we explore one of the leading Muslim philosophers, ibn Rushd, known to the West as Averroes, who’s treatises and dialogues concerning revelation and reason was at the heart of the arguments for and against philosophy in Islam. We further into ibn Rushd’s life and his impact not only on Islamic philosophy but the effect he had on the civilised world’s philosophic recourse from the Middle Ages and onwards to the pre modern era.
All my appreciation to my friend Mustafa for inspiring this video. Not only have you been a wonderful commentator on my works to date but also extremely helpful in improving the content on this channel.

As always, a unique and original presentation. I wonder, is there a preoccupation in the Arab world with the question of our existence? You know, why am I here, what’s the meaning of life and such. I personally always found it absurd as we are an expression of life and if there is any meaning to it, it’s for us to be one with it as we are all connected, but I believe the Western philosophy turned that on its head and internalized it. Just wondering how this meaning of life is seen in the Arab world?

    • @thekandarichronicles

Hakukuze7947 you ask a very important question. Also a piercing one. There is no "pre occupation" per se. Is it real question posed by Arabs? I am sure. Not just the why but what was it all for? But for Muslims there is strong recourse. The finality of faith, and the pursuit of an afterlife are common suppliers of comfort that are much more powerful than any philosophical rationalisation.

There are other influential Muslim philosophers in the world, such as: Ibn Taymiyyah, Al-Kindi and Ibn Al-Tufayl.
Dr. says Abu Ya'arub Al-Marzouqi (د.أبو يعرب المرزوقي )said that Ibn Taymiyyah is the greatest philosopher in Arab-Islamic civilization
Dr. Tayeb Bouazza (د. الطيب بوعزة )also says that Ibn Taymiyyah is more accurate and knowledgeable in the science of logic, and he is the most revealing of its imbalances and errors.
Al-Kindi, who is the father of Arab philosophy, and Al-Kindi’s contributions to philosophy in transferring philosophical sciences from the Greek language to Arabic. He worked to adapt Greek philosophy to fit Islamic teachings and used the experience to save some of the philosophers’ opinions, and he had some philosophical opinions.

Philosophy is the natural state of the intelligent person and all sciences are nothing but slices of philosophy. It's not something useless at all: extremely useful for all those otherwise mindless times at work, transportation or just walking around, sometimes it may open you absolutely new almost unexplored paths that nobody else can even see in their tiny bubbles of "pragmatism" and evasion (mostly evasion, pragmatism is psychologically crushing, soul-devastating, at least in excess).
The problem with philosophy (but also with mysticism and anything slightly free and creative) is dogma. When you have a truth and you think your truth is the only truth and that everybody else must abide by that "truth", then we have a problem of intolerance and inquisition. In the words of another more modern Andalusian great mind, Antonio Machado:
      "Your truth not, Truth
And come with me in search of it
      Your truth
      Keep it for yourself".

Within revealed religion there has to be a limit to questioning. There would have to be, no matter how progressive one is. It would not be possible, for example to question the existence of God. Let me rephrase that, it could be possible to question the existence of God, but never to answer in the negative.

As a muslim myself, why do you think that in principle I cannot question whether God exists? I surely can question it all I want and still choose to believe that God does exist.
I'll give you an example that you might understand better. One can rationally argue for Solipsism for example, you can question the existence of anything other than your own mind, you can analyse it all you want. But at the end of the day, whether you want to believe it and live by it or not, is actually up to you.
A theist can question the existence of God, analyse it all they want but at the end of the day they can still choose to believe in God. No one is "forced" to believe. I believe in God because I literally chose to. Because it makes my mortal human life much more meaningful, it allows me to live a moral honest life. You can argue that I'm biased since I'm only Muslim because my parents raised me as one, but when you inherit something you can either throw it in the trash or appreciate and use it. To me Islam is a great intellectual and spiritual heritage that I inherited from my parents, from their parents,...etc.

In discussing faith with a Christian friend and he went into philosophical levels, my mind was just "La Titfalsaf." It's hard to understand Christianity but when he adds philosophical layers, it's over. I never like to question: where did we come from, why is there evil, where do we go after death. My faith is enough. I am not curious to wonder. There's enough to do here to live my principles and serve the community.

That’s a wonderful comment and thank you for the insight and honesty. I think there should be a middle ground. Questioning shouldn’t be ambit existentialism or reason for being but more about terrestrial things and how things work, inquiry that can lead to innovation.

    • @yuzan3607
      @yuzan3607 4 часа назад

I think faith and philosophy are completely separate. I think that at some level you kind of "fear" questioning because you "fear" losing your faith. But that's a wrong way to look at it. You choose your faith, no one will take it away from you. Because atheists like to think that if you think long enough rationally you must conclude that God doesn't exist. But that is not true, it's just what they choose to believe and you can keep believing what you want whilst still be able to comfortably question everything.

If you can look at the Arab history, they were nothing until they had this religion, after that in 23 years they became a superpower only to last for 300 years that’s when the philosophy entered their cultural feild, that’s when they started to decay

No. The answers in the Quran are not explicit, so they require interpretation and therefore require questions. And also no, the Arab world did not become a power because of Islam, before Islam it was already a civilization. And the Muslim world did not fall because of philosophy, quite the opposite, at the height of critical thinking there were the various technological innovations that Muslims launched to the world. The Islamic world only fell because of laziness in thinking and the lack of unity among nations

If you don't question everything you'll become a mindless servant who just obeys orders, not too different from a donkey. That's certainly not what Islam teaches us to be. Allah says" إنما يخشى الله من عباده العلماء" meaning those who fear God the most are the one's with most knowledge. Because when you're knowledgeable you don't just mindlessly obey orders, but you "know" what it means to follow Allah, you "know" the right path. And without questioning you can't reach higher levels of knowledge.

Uf Kandari, you started promising, analytical, and then you slid on the slippery slope of insecurity and Feeble Islamic Apologia. Ibn Rush was a colossus for Western thinkers and much as you selected some images to show Western disrespected for him, Ibn Rushd had been deeply etched in Western Consciousness as the Teacher, not just Commentator; one who helped transmit Ancient Greek philosophy to Christian Europe and thus helped usher the Renaissance. To not do this as required by good manners shows how much you hate the West and how you try to blame the West for Islamic shortcomings. Why do you hate this much Kandari?, why can't you raise above hatred and be equidistant and fair? Without proportionality there is no justice! Now, should you had spoken about the fundamental conflict between Al Ghazali treachery - he sold the rational Islam in favor of revelation - under the pressure of the Nizam-al-Mulk who served the Seljuk interests, Seljuks being primitive and violent minds who never bothered with philosophy and sciences...then you would have invited the next level of awareness in your discourse. Meaning how the destruction of rational - scientific - philosophical Islam was destroyed from the inside, with the advent of Al Ghazali, and because of the destructive Turk invasions, never rational and humanistic folks but greedy and utterly violent. Turks destroyed Islam! But for you to claim that Ibn Rushd was belittled by the West when exactly the opposite is the truth is dishonest, cruel, and sorry to say this, this was utterly stupid on your part! You should strive to teach, not to spew hatred. Lift yourself above your hatred, be reasonable and fair, be a man that has the courage to speak the truth, as Ibn Rushd did! Best wishes!

He's right, he hasn't spoken anything else than facts.

"Lift yourself above hatred” as you demonize the Turks

"transmit Ancient Greek philosophy to Christian Europe and thus helped usher the Renaissance"
I recommend you research German historian prof. Fuat Sezgin. The so called Renaissance was built mostly on theft. At best, the names of original Arab authors and inventors were omitted, at worst these inventions and ideas were attributed to Europeans, a.k.a. plagiarism. Fuat Sezgin was able to trace back thousands of European books and inventions to their Arabic origin, and demonstrated how the entire "Western civilization" was nothing but the result of the stealing of the golden age of Muslims after the fall of al Andalus.

Hi Nicolas. I actually appreciate all commentary and your repeated viewing of the content, but you see if you resort to expressing yourself in such a way you will lose any reader, even if your points might have validity. Be civil even in your disagreement. That way I can hear you and we can have a constructive give and take. Thank you.

@@thekandarichronicles Kandari, how can you project thusly? How can you call me uncivil when it is you that reaches the peaks of intellectual dishonesty? To jumble and make a mess of history for ideological purposes is the epitome of falsehood. It is intellectual death!. To deny the cataclysmic impact of Turco-Mongol invasions on Islamic world and the wholesale destruction of Iranic and Arab monumental libraries by these so called Muslims is criminal, irresponsible! Therefore I deem you a troubled soul, a corrupt mind and ideologue and will quit following you. Best wishes!
