I love the story of this song - how Gary Kemp was trying to impress Claire Grogan from Altered Images with his mentions of Marvin Gaye and Nabokov's Lolita but too scared to tell her how he feels about her - 'why do I find it hard to write the next line'. So romantic. And Tony Hadley has the best voice of the 80s surely.
One of my favorite memories of this song was just a couple of years ago with a group of friends at a small bar. The first few notes came over the speakers ( we were several drinks deep at this point ) and I turned to one of my best friends ( a quite handsome straight gentleman ) and just said, “Dance with me for a minute.” And he looked at me and said, “Let’s Go.” It felt like Sixteen Candles. Classic.
Spandau Ballet were awesome. So many great songs. They were dismissed by some critics because they were pretty boys but they did have a lot of quality. This one is a classic. Do more songs.
I saw lead singer Tony Hadley perform this 5 weeks ago when he was supporting Boy George and Culture Club. What a night!! Tony has still got THE voice, and ahhh it was magical. Thanks as always for a great reaction. Random fact for you before I go - Martin Kemp (his brother Gary is the one you think looks like Seth MacFarlane!) from Spandau Ballet married Shirlie Holliman who was backing performer for Wham! and best friend of George Michael.
One of my fave UK 80s bands! They have some great hits. Gold (more sexy sax), To Cut A Long Story Short, Chant no 1, Communication, Only When You Leave, Through The Barricades. Lead singer is Tony Hadley and his voice is magnificent!! ❤ please do a few more of their songs.
Oh, I loved Spandau Ballet and they were played on the radio all the time. I think my favourite song was "Gold". Would be nice with a Spandau Ballet week.
"Seth McFarlane" is Gary Kemp, the man who wrote this song, and all the songs of Spandau Ballet in their first five albums. And yes, he acted in The Bodyguard,
Lol Tony Hadley is the lead singer. He sings "sound" when it kicks in - "this is the sound of my soul" Seth MacFarlane is Gary Kemp, his brother is there too, Martin. They acted together in the film The Krays. They were part of the New Romantics style bands back in the 80's. Other great tracks (if you haven't already heard them) are Gold and (my favourite) Through The Barricades.
4:53 is Gary Kemp. He's the brother of band member Martin Kemp. Gary also played the selfish publicist and advisor 'Sy Spector' to Whitney Houstons character 'Rachel' in 'The Bodyguard' movie.
Loved this review/reaction! - funny & relaxed, clever without being try-hard, appreciative of the vid, plus whether you liked the song or not, I can tell that you can hear what's going on - the instruments etc - you're both musical guys - & I liked the reminiscence of school days lol -new sub Btw, I read that the whole band met at the same school - now that's the kind of school I wish I'd gone to!
Some fun facts; there are two brothers in the band; they were called New Romantics in the ‘80’s; their other hit was “to cut a long story short” which was more upbeat.
This band was one of the New Wave/Post Punk/New Romantics crowd who idolized Motown artists and were trying to emulate them both stylistically and musically (hence the lyric "Listening to Marvin [Gaye] all night long." See also: ABC, whose biggest US hit was "When Smokey Sings" (as in Robinson).
From Wikipedia about the origin of the band name: "Friend and writer Robert Elms suggested they change their name to Spandau Ballet, a phrase which he told them he had seen written on a wall on a weekend trip to Berlin: “Rudolf Hess, all alone, dancing the Spandau Ballet”. Spandau is a part of Berlin where Rudolf Hess, a nazi war criminal was incarcerated. FYI
The band didn't dress like this, it was the director of the video's idea. It's pronounced Span-dow (rhymes with cow) and refers to a Berlin prison and the "ballet" refers to the twitching of prisoners being hanged there.
Ok, glorious adorable funny insightful brothers, somehow I found you randomly.. Is anything really ever coincidence, or random. And now I'm part of your fandom (see what I did there) I appreciate I'm new on your scene, but I would graciously request a UK viewer 'Portishead' Glory Box live, I promise it will blow your socks (and pants) off! Thank you, for all you are and all you do❤🙏 ruclips.net/video/MnMTK8EdsOc/видео.htmlsi=mmrlmfLkwqdeB2g3
Need to put requests under their weekly suggestions video where people have to vote on your list. The top four lists of 5 songs that get the highest votes will go on their poll on their Saturday live and voted on again.
@ 2:25 I love that they give a nod to Marvin Gaye.😉
One of the greatest songs of the 80s British music scene.

That story was just as lovely as the song. Just lovely ❤
Tony Hadley still has one of the best voices in the business.
I was a teenager in the 80s and this band was EVERYTHING !!!!!!
Spandau Ballet were awesome. So many great songs. They were dismissed by some critics because they were pretty boys but they did have a lot of quality. This one is a classic. Do more songs.

That’s the one! Gold is awesome. I’d also throw in Only when you leave.
Gold (Gold!)...
im suprised gold and pleasure werent bigger hits
To cut a long story short always felt to me like it was from a different band. Like ABC or something like that.
Great tune though. As is gold.
British New Romantic. Includes other groups like "Duran Duran", "Ultravox" and "ABC"
This song makes me miss my dad.. he loved this song along with others.
That amazing man with an amazing voice is the 6'4"' tall Tony Hadley!

One of my all time favourites 😍
Thanks guys

Oh I knew this was Sy! 😀
The Gentlemen of 1980s New Wave music 👍
Gary Kemp (Piano) wrote this song, & was in The Bodygard with Kevin Vostner & Whitney Houston. FYI Singer Sade designed their suits.
This song is as beautiful is Mike 😊
And Joe!
The Wedding Singer 😂 Steve Buscemi
The Spandau boys stopped on the Bryan Ferry page of the fashion catalogue here...

Haven’t heard this for a while, such a great song! 🎵 🎶 Such a great voices!! Beautiful! Let’s not forget the sax! 🎷 ❤❤
Love your reactions guys!!❤❤
Some fun facts; there are two brothers in the band; they were called New Romantics in the ‘80’s; their other hit was “to cut a long story short” which was more upbeat.
Martin and Gary Kemp are brothers in the band who also went on to do a lot of acting, martins son Roman is also a well known radio host in the UK.
Beautiful song and a very nice video.
To me the pianist looks a lot like the former lead singer of Wet Wet Wet, Marti Pellow, in his younger days.
I both love this and hate it because it makes me miss being young 😭
With their suits and ties they remind me of early Beatles, just more poppy 🙂
Now you have to listen to P.M. Dawn sample this in "Set Adrift on Memory Bliss."
And stay tuned because up next Rick Astley will bring us home with his new number one WTF that voice that face hit Never Gnna Give u up!!!

Yep the guys don’t understand the fashions back then lol
Definitely react to Johnny Hates Jazz "Shattered Dreams"!
Ooo yes! Great song!
The mic is normal size, he's just got extremely large hands 😂 they look like a wedding band 😂
His microphone is SO SMALL 😂 I know that much is true

FYI
Pronounced Span-DOW
And the "Spandau ballet" was suicide by hanging

Ya'll are funny. The mic analysis/imitation had me dying😂
Nice🎉
Supergrass
Alright
I always think it’s weird for them to name the band after a notorious Nazi jail
A friend suggested they change their name …he had been to Berlin and saw it written on a wall ..Rudolf Hess ….all alone dancing the spandau ballet…
Spandau is pronounced Span-dow (rhymes with now)
