This song was like crack on the dancefloor. It would make me feel so euphoric when we were out dancing. It's like that feeling when you find an a/c vent in a super hot nightclub and you just camp out under it and dance.
I've been a New Order fan since '87, and "Bizarre Love Triangle" was my intro. Pre-Internet, you really had to do research to find out who performed a song, so my older brother and I heard the song randomly on T.V. and spent several days trying to figure out the song's name and artist. My bro finally just called our local radio station to get the answer, and soon after, bought their first quasi- greatest hits album, "Substance". My bro took his girlfriend ( now wife of 30+ years) to see New Order in '89 in San Diego. I didn't get to see New Order play until '05, at Coachella, but that was a total bucket list sort of moment for me.
I can't even explain to you how important New Order were growing up in the 80s and 90s in England. They were literally the coolest. They still give me chills when I hear any of their stuff. They weren't a 'spin off' of Joy Division. They were literally Joy Division just without Ian Curtis.
This. This is an important part of music history. Ian Curtis. Tragic. But, yeah. I have the original vinyls of a lot of these. I. love. New Order and where how they impacted our popular culture. Arghhhhhhhhhhhh
This song and video are ART. The video is chaotic yet fluid. It flows from one seemingly unconnected image to another but does so to the constantly changing textures of the music. And the beautiful part about it is that they didn’t make a video just to market the single. They weren’t in that scene at all.. They made a video where they and the direction obviously had full artistic freedom.
Blue Monday is their best known single, their first top 10 in the UK. It's the best-selling 12 inch record of all time... which are longer mixes used mostly for dance halls. But it was first released in that form, not first on an album. The version of Bizarre Love Triangle on the 1987 compilation Substance of their prior big hits mostly in 12" longer mixes was 6 minutes 44 seconds in length... definitely check it out as you'll see how their dance versions gradually brought in more instruments into each mix which is intoxicating. When listening, you can focus on your favorite rhythm/electronic groove as it comes to the foreground or wanes to the background.
Joy Division's most well-known song was 'Love will Tear Us Apart', highly recommend a listen, along with New Order's biggest hit and club staple of the 80's 'Blue Monday'.
An interesting bit of trivia! This video was directed by the artist Robert Longo, who is mostly know from his print series Men in the Cities, which depict people in business suits in contorted motions (if you have watched American Psycho, Patrick Bateman has them decorating his apartment walls), a theme that can be seen in this video too. He went later to direct Johnny Mnemonic, his only movie to the date, which also features a suited actiony Keanu Reeves (the story behind this one is very interesting too).
This version of the song is chaotic, but the album version isn't! Looooove this song. You should listen to some earlier stuff on your own time. Check out "Procession".
And now I’m hearing you both say there’s no iconic moment to “latch on to”……. “I don’t believe in reincarnation because I refuse to come back as a bug or a rabbit!” Millions of us know that quote.
In a nightclub you probably heard the 12" mix by Shep Pettibone (the version of BLT that's on the Substance - 2CD collection/greatest hits). The version used for the vid. is quite a lot shorter and is rougher, choppier in several respects.
Good point. I’ve just re-listened to the Shep Pettibone mix from Substance and much prefer it to the shorter video version. I’m not usually a fan of remixes but the long mix is very smooth and easy to listen to for the first few minutes. The subsequent transitions are also very well-done. I always appreciated the vocal during the last 75 seconds on the remix being synthesised and finally in duet form (Bernard Sumner + synth voice). Love it.
Joy Division were many things. "Cheers" would not be an apt description, though...The Shep Pettibone Remix is the superior version of this song. Substance was such a great compilation, they re-released an expanded 4 CD version of it recently. True Faith next on the compilation too. Blue Monday, Thieves Like Us, The Perfect Kiss, Sub-Culture, Shellshock, State of the Nation, 1963...What a compilation!

My fave song by New Order. Great work guys !

...which is why they were nominated for the Rock Hall of Fame as "Joy Division/New Order"

I absolutely love 80s music 👌😘🇬🇧✌️
I grew up dancing on Blue Monday, and then loved all New Order songs. They are just iconic for the dance and pop world 👍❤
80's best decade to be a teen
Moustache bros 😆

Blue Monday is a contender but True Faith and World in Motion are contenders depending on where you’re from.
One of the three most influential tracks of the 80s for me.

wow, impressive you started singing along with Baltimora "Tarzan boy"
This is an edit of the Shep Pettibone remix. The original album version from “Brotherhood” is the best.

Not a guitar in the end. It is a bass played by Peter Hook.
🙌🏼💃🏻🙌🏼
Thought this was "Love Bizarre" by Sheila E. and Prince. Dyslexic I'm.

i definitely prefer the other version of this song
