  • We visited a former concentration camp while on Green Island. We had heard so many great things about the beauty of the island that we couldn't pass of a chance to see it for ourselves. But! The highlight of the entire trip was our visit to the New Life Corrections Center. We learned so much and our love of Taiwan only grew after learning about the White Terror period.

    WOW. This is the first time I have seen foreign tourists come to Green Island not just talking about the beautiful scenery but to have a deeper understanding of Taiwan's history.
    If you're interested in white terror history, check out the history of 228 (the February 28 event), where every tragedy begins.
    In this incident, the lives of many Taiwanese elites were taken away, leaving many tragic stories.
    Btw, I love your videos and perspectives, your videos are amazing and the views are totally underrated!

      We really appreciate your comment! We had no idea we were going to learn so much and that what we learned would only reinforce our high opinion of Taiwan. We thought we couldn't make a video on Green Island because we don't have a drone. LOL. It seems nearly every Foreigner made RUclips video has these beautiful drone shots.... We're so happy to have discovered the human rights project there. Thank you again for your nice comment and thank you for watching.

    Hi! I can't believe I hadn't watched this video yet. As a bit of a genocide scholar back in my university days, I can't believe I didn't know anything about this place. It's my first time learning about it. Thank you for taking the time to go, to sit and learn and listen and for sharing some of your reflections here. I look forward to more of your thought-provoking content. Hope you both are well in Taiwan. I miss new content from you both!

      Thanks for the kind words. We learned a lot on that trip. It probably would have visited the prison more than once had we actually discovered it earlier in our trip. We went back to the States for a bit and we are now back in Taiwan. So, more content is coming we just need to get back in the swing of things. Thanks again. 😁

    neither government from the mainland was not the good guy, most participants in civil wars usually aren't. and then they often don't treat third parties, like the Taiwan islanders, much better than the enemy :(

      This is true. War is hell, no doubt. How Taiwan has remade itself since those KMT days is quite impressive nonetheless.

    If we had no 'Chinese' came to Taiwan, all of these terrors wouldn't had happened. Unfortunately, not all of 'them' would like to face it and having all of these cases being justified.

      I almost seems as the humans are naturally territorial. If the Chinese had not come to Taiwan then it would have been someone else, right? Who do you think that would have been? The Japanese? Europeans? It's unfortunate that they're such a need for humans to conquer another land.

    Love your videos! Sorry if you've already answered this question, but do you know if travel is allowed to Taiwan right now from the U.S.? I am planning to come to Taipei for a few weeks during the end of summer, but I am confused on the travel restrictions and then the rule of quarantine hotels. Thanks guys!

    • @Justin_Leah
      @Justin_Leah  2 года назад +1

      Thank you😁 Travel restrictions are changing frequently and quickly. As of right now the borders are not open to just anyone they're limited to those who are coming through legitimate business travel or work permits. Be sure to check out the websites that we have listed on our everything you need to know about quarantine video. Mr Host and the CDC seem to always share the changes your travel restrictions almost immediately.

    how do you feel about the war that is about to happen in Taiwan now?

    • @Justin_Leah
      @Justin_Leah  2 года назад +4

      What war? China has been threatening the country of Taiwan for a long time! This is nothing new. It's only been made anew international media coverage. We follow the locals, they don't seem too concerned so we aren't too concerned. Unfortunately, much like Ukraine, Taiwan is being treated like a pawn by other international powers.

    It is actually a jail in green island. You mention it as a concentration camp.

      @@Justin_Leah 我知道,除了重刑犯還會關一些政治犯,所以你們會稱集中營,但我們都統稱它為監獄

      The information that was provided by the museum and the memorial did not refer to it as a jail. We're using the information that was provided by the Taiwanese government. Jails in Taiwan do not make you build your own facility nor do they force you into re-education classes.

    • @zenkat489
      @zenkat489 2 года назад

      @@Justin_Leah 這是一個觀點,沒有要爭論,因為台灣政府在做轉型正義,所以才會標示為集中營,如你們參觀時所得到的資訊,但它確實是關了超過80%是真的犯罪的人,除了少數政治犯,所以我才會稱它是監獄多過於集中營

    • @Justin_Leah

      So your comment was more of a critique of the Taiwanese government's effort to use Transitional Justice to help write the wrongs of past human rights violations? Just because you call it a jail and just because you under the impression that only 20% of the prisoners were actually political prisoners does that mean we should not acknowledge the atrocities that occurred there? Does calling it in jail rather than a concentration camp actually serve any justice to those who were abused there?
