huge Adrian fan and I don't dislike Jim or Sam but they have a musical icon and legend in front of them and they can't be bothered to at least peripherally know his work... Jim claims to be a huge Zappa fan yet did not know when Adrian played for him. Then when Adrian alluded to his King Crimson days (arguably one of the greatest group of musicians ever) Jim couldn't take a hint.
Wow. These are two of my major childhood heroes. I have the album cover of "Discipline" tattooed on my arm. I have most of their stuff on vinyl from the 80s.
I wonder if anybody ever asked the Cracked out Bobby Brown and or Witney Houston's thoughts about the song ,maybe Bobby couldn't get untied from the Tower of Power & get the Spindle out of his ass to talk to music journalists lmao
17:23 Just imagine how much better Adrian’s “interview” would have been if he didn’t have 3 DJs and Stewart cracking jokes non-stop during this segment. “What is this Howard Stern?” No, Howard occasionally shuts up and listens. 🙄
It's just a sad situation. Fripp is the leader of King Crimson, and his compositional genius defines what they are. Nonetheless, Belew is an extraordinary genius too, but more importantly there isn't another musician alive who could do for Fripp what Belew could do for him. Between his vocals and guitar playing, I don't know anyone else who could handle what he handled in KC (and I'm not sure how much he wrote as well). So I wish the two of them could get along -- Adrian deserved far more than an email if Robert wanted a change
So nobody in the studio besides Adrian and Copeland knew who the guitar player was for the band Belew played in for 33 years? Does not compel me to watch this un-researched show again.
I must have missed that, I thought he spoke highly of all musicians mentioned... I liked what he said about Sting because like most people there in the studio I thought he would have an ego the size of an elephant, but no. Apparently it's the opposite. I'll shut up now.
Maybe not this interview but he's been known to take jabs at progressive groups in particular, like putting down Neil Peart in the past even though they are friends.
I think Adrian Belew is awesome, but the new version of KC is incredible, and getting Mel Collins back in the group and playing more pre-Lark's material was a welcome change.
@@foodog777 I was at the Live In Chicago show with the 3 drummers (and the 4th playing keyboards), and it was incredible ensemble playing; but you can't compare that lineup with a group with 1 drummer. If they did have one drummer, of course I would have wanted to be Bruford, but that wasn't an option for Fripp to consider. Fripp did choose to exclude Belew, but I firmly believe he chose the best ensemble for the material they played. Again, a setlist of '70-'74 material is what I preferred, over Thrak and Power to Believe stuff.
Thought it was admirable how Stewart stood up for Sting when the interviewers were knocking him down. Love Stewart Copeland :) But saying that Sting did them (Stewart and Andy) a favor by sticking around for two more albums after Zenyatta because he didn’t really need them (what?) and he (SC) was grateful to him for doing that -- that’s a new one. Don’t quite get it. But I’m nobody and who cares if I don’t get it - he was there and lived it. But even though “Sting knew how to make records,” as SC put it, his solo records were not as good as Police records. So he did need them to be as great.
This was great. Kinda funny to hear them talk about Fripp in this light. Sad that things went the way they did but it always was 100% Fripps band. He's the mad scientist.
That's what I thought. King Crimson was around long before KC with Belew in the band....... Belew will get over it. Time heals. Time doesn't wait ( "Time Waits" by Belew is a real nice song btw)
With Stewart's sharing his father's professional life. I am again reminded of the number, increasing number of Musicians whose parents or parent were members of the intelligence community or military. Copeland Zappa Crosby Morrison Leto Cass to name a few. Of the Military base in Laurel Canyon, recently purchased by Leto. The recorded history of T. Leary thanking the CIA for LSD-25. It is an interesting rabbit hole.
This could have all been avoided if they'd just kept the name "Discipline" and not been tempted to use the King Crimson name. I think Bill Bruford suggested it as a way to get gigs. I'm sure the name opened a couple of doors for them, but ultimately it was always potentially going to end up like this. They really should have stuck with a different name, using KC was handing this band over to Fripp. I mean, it took nearly 40 years, but it was probably always going to end up like this.
!please bring adrian back - just him or better yet him and the amazing julie if you have to have him bring a pal . jim - try "tinseltown rebellion" and also any ab solo disk
A note to the host: TURN DOWN YOUR FUCKING MIC! Put a compressor on it and let us hear the folks being interviewed without having to turn up the volume only to have you interject 8db louder. Jeebus - that’s narcissism at its worst.
I don't think it is boredom necessarily but more that he is a bit of an ADHD-like fidgeter (not good at sitting still). I think he needs a guitar in his hands, and he'd be fine.
Adrian did play for 33 years with William B and Tony L, and they really appeared to be enjoying themselves both on stage and off. Those shows were to me infinitely more interesting than what I've seen with the 3 drummers circus. but everything revolves around the Dude/Silent Bob, for it is his band.
Clearly Belew was referencing Robert Fripp in his sacking from King Crimson. Brilliant though he is, Fripp doesn't strike me as being particularly warm and fuzzy - or sentimental towards someone he'd worked with so long. Pretty sad - and Fripp nowadays may not be particularly proud as to how it was handled.
There are some very legitimate reasons why RF didn't want to work with AB anymore. It was all over at the end of the 5 piece 2008 mini-tour. AB acted like a prima donna which we know RF has no tolerance for.
Tell the rest of the story Mr. Belew! Tell the world how you and "Martha" demanded the rest of the band be paid "Sideman" pay, as a condition of you returning to the band. Getting a little full of yourself since you won the Oscar, aren't you?
Only so much time to talk during this interview anyways. But what's wrong with being paid as a side man? Only so big of a pie to split up and blue was the frontman lead singer of the band 4 decades. He's going to want to get paid some real money. That's just business. And this is show business. Most King Crimson fans are Adrian belew fans. But that's fine Fripp wanted to try a new incarnation.
@@goshgolly8305 At the end of the day, King Crimson are a functioning democracy. Everyone should be paid equal. Is it fair to pay RF more than the others because it's his band? No. And furthermore, I always liked the Cross/Fripp/Wetton/Bruford and/or Muir lineup better.

I found out about King Crimson only recently. I love Adrian Belew!!!!
Bill Bruford once called Fripp an amalgam of Stalin, Gandhi and the Marquis de Sade.

MerkinMuffly KC and the Sunshine Band

Poor Adrian when talking about Fripp.
Reads lyrics to Bobby Brown Goes Down. Immediately understands why Jim loves it.

Yeah why would they crack jokes on a COMEDY SHOW
They're having fun.
Mr. Belew seems genuinely hurt. I hope he and Mr. Fripp can reconcile.
The fact that neither Jim nor sam mentioned discipline is a sin
"Flakes" is probably one of the greatest songs I've ever heard...... also one of the funniest(crazy how the lyrics still hold up even now :D)
Sad these clowns have no clue about Fripp, Belew, Crimson, Discipline etc.
@GOOMBAH no argument here but the mathematical precision of his music requires an asshole to make it work

200 motels - I agree with Stewart. It's a fantastic Zappa album. Thank you for posting. Very interesting interview. Can't wait to see them tour.
Wow, what a perfect show! Amazing story from Stuart Copeland and his connection to Kim Philby and the Cambridge Five. Then the great Adrian Belew!
Great interview. Stewart and Adrian come across great! Bravo for the high road taken on previous band members.
Copeland's never been shy about criticizing other great musicians, I think it's mostly for show and attention though.

Meh! You think KC’s duet on “Indicipline” with Jacko singing Adrian’s spoken word part is good? They need 4 drummers to replace Bill Bruford! Meh!

In the thumbnail Belew looks like one of those Opie photoshops from reddit.
Stewart and Belew are the kings of music. Norton and roberts are the hemmeroids of media

Talk about ego these guys have more than they can count on both their fingers
Yeah but it's pretty understandable why!
Ya, the spouse must be told of the CIA employment, background checked, etc.
I'm not sure but like 10 years ago or so was Stewart Copeland on the Old O and A show and they hated him and he came across a blank.
