1944 - Lyrics
Can you imagine, The night it happened
the place was swinging and crowds were singing
and then the people were dancing all night
to the sound of the band
and when darkness came, well this I’m telling ya’s
where the story began
Ya see Miss Evans, Sweet twenty seven
Out having fun with everyone, life had begun
and she was dancing all night, To the sound of the band
and just before first light came, she left the party to go working again
And she danced like never before
to the music upon the dance floor
blind to a war she tried to ignore, in 1944
Just like a bird her heart it would soar
all through the night then right through the door
Back to the job she never asked for, it was 1944
He was a stalker, He’d waited for her
the moon was dimming, her head was spinning
and as she walked she was soon out of sight
but could still hear the band, It was dark that night
she didn’t know of all the things he had planned
You see now Arthur, He was a father
he had a wife, he had a life, he had 3 children
but he lost them that night, as the band played for him
and he took her soul and left her strangled by the side of the road
And she danced like never before
to the music upon the dance floor
blind to a war she tried to ignore, in 1944
Just like a bird her heart it would soar
all through the night then right through the door
Back to the job she never asked for, In 1944
Just thirty-seven, he’d not see heaven
‘Cause Arthur Heyes was sent away to Norwich slammer
and he would hang that day, there was nothing to say
and then the lynch man came and that is when his execution began
And she danced like never before
to the music upon the dance floor
blind to a war she tried to ignore, in 1944
Just like a bird her heart it would soar
all through the night then right through the door
Back to the job she never asked for, In 1944
