Exact same thing happened to Greece when they won the Euro in 2004. 2 years later in the world cup we made it through the group stages in first place, only to lose horribly in the very first match, getting last place. The pressure of being consistently perfect and playing at the top of your game is quite impossible. So many things have to happen in the perfect way, which requires a lot of skill and luck, to get to the finals. Just because a team or country won once, doesn't mean they are the best. It means they got lucky and had a great team that year. That's it.
