    Great looking wagon. Always been partial to those 1966 models. I had a 1964 Challenger Wagonaire. One of only 200+ built in 1964. Challenger was the lowest trim level Wagonaire that year, so no frills. What made it somewhat rare was the 259, automatic transmission combination. Standard was a 3-speed manual and OHV 6-cylinder. If you are ever interested in selling, look me up. Thank you for sharing.

    Reminds me a lot of my 65 Chevy II, Nova wagon....but I like this design better,
    My Nova had a two speed power glide, power steering, manual drum brakes, 190 L-head six cylinder, medium metallic blue.
    I bought it off an old lady when it was 16 years old for 600 bucks. I put new steel belted radials on it, an ADDCO rear anti-sway bar and tucked an FM radio "Radio Shack" converter under the dash. Damn I miss that car. The Massachusetts snow and salted roads ate it up pretty bad.

      I'd prefer a real Studebaker engine to the Canadian Chevy motor that this one has. However, I like the front end of the '66 better than the earlier Larks. Given that everything was interchangeable, I've seen '64 Wagonaires with '66 grilles swapped into them.

      They should have merged with packard, nash and hudson back in 1930s... maybe it would go all very differently. They could compete with GM, ford and chrysler

    • @seed_drill7135

      One reason is that that 1966 car was still built on a 1953 chassis. They couldn't afford redesigns. Another reason was price wars between Ford and Chevy. And the South Bend workers were paid more than their Detroit counterparts, which further cut into profits. Studebaker had been losing money for years before they introduced the Lark in '59. That was a big hit which gave them two profitable years, but then the Falcon and Valiant came onto the market. The Board of Directors decided to roll those profits into diversifying the company, rather than new product. So the company survived even after auto production ended.
      Even the amazing Avanti was an outsourced fiberglass body sitting on a Lark convertible chassis with some heavy duty suspension parts from the Wagonaire.

    • @neildickson5394
      @neildickson5394 5 лет назад +3

      @@seed_drill7135 The Avanti fiberglass body was only built by the same company producing the Corvette for the introduction cars. Then, because of fit and finish issues Studebaker killed that contract and thereafter created their own bodies.

    Studebaker kept making cars for a short time after they shut their engine plant, and the last Studes like this one had a Chev motor - a 283 I believe. The Stude V8 was strong but heavy, and the Chev engined ones should steer and handle a bit more nicely thanks to the lighter motor.

Of course GM had more Pulling power with the government to make sure Studebaker wouldn’t be able to Make a come back. Just Like Tucker . They settled out of court for $10.000. Wow.

      I'm curious what car you are talking about. It's NOT a Studebaker, the last one was built in 1966, and it doesn't really sound like an Avanti II, which in 69 was still pretty much a Studebaker Avanti with a GM drivetrain.

      @@JeffDeWitt Prototype I have no find it in a bunch of other cars that my partner and I were buying really don’t know what it was until I got it back to the shop and cleaned it up .they also made Avanti for doors and they also had Avanti convertibles before The Avanti two came out

      @@JamesBond-hu9rg The four door Avant's and convertibles were built by Avanti Motors, not Studebaker. Studebaker did build some styling exercises for four door sedans based on the Avanti styling, but they never got any further than that... and all of that kind of work ended with the closing of the South Bend plant at the end of 1963.
      I'd love to know just what you had!
