Fascinating. The guy is an absolute master of his craft. Good to hear his cymbal work since it never seems to come through well in the live recordings.Thank-you, John.
That's the thing about drums. If it's a skilled drummer he can provide audible backing beats if you specifically listen for them, but they stay in the background a bit and add to the song when you listen to it as a whole. Kai is great at that. :)
The giant of drums, playing through tempo changes like he's strolling through the park. And can we talk about how easily Floor's vocals cut through even his drums and come through clearly? Not just any vocalist can do that! Man Kai is a legend!
A drumcam reaction of GLS, a RUclips first for you lol :) And ofc Floor's voice is so powerful it is the sole thing that still manages to come through in the audio of this drumcam.
Wow, this made me view this song a little differently. Thanks for doing this. One of the best drum fills in the song is hidden behind the Floorgasm at the end where no one would ever notice it!
Jukka and Kai both clearly have their own style. Jukka has more showmanship with his movements and such while drumming, while Kai is a faster drummer with high technical skills. At least that's how I see them. I miss Jukka's showmanship, but highly respect Kai's drumming skills as well. :)
@@sebulbathx I once saw an interview with Kai where he explained that learning Jukka's songs was pretty difficult for him. Since Jukka's drumming style switching between rhythms a lot, and fast too. Which to me sounds like Jukka drums more on feeling than on technical rhythm. And that definitely gives a more "fun" factor I think.
@@Sanquinity Ah cool. That almost confirms their styles then. Also how their styles comes to the audiences ears. Both are great but Jukkas style was more fun and engaging whilst Kais was more correct and clean sounding.
yeah in my opinion Kai had difficulties because he doesn't feel it (the music) as much as Jukka did. Some people feel the music more some less (not saying he is not a great drummer and very good tehnique). Jukka's better feeling of the rythm made him sound less liniar, more 'colorful'. However, let's not forget that songs being composed while Jukka was in, what he was drumming there felt natural for him, since probably he came up with lots of the stuff. Here, this guy has to learn to play as someone else, so that's also a difference. True, I liked Jukka's energy more, but I ain't going there since the golden era of NW is long gone so nothing is like with original line-up (well no original but I mean since Marko till end of an era).

Watching Kai makes me unsure about which drummer I want in Nightwish. Kai is such an amazing player, and those little “Kai-isms” he puts in there and in other songs are absolutely amazing. And on the other end, Jukka looked like such a total badass up there playing. I just love both of them.
I miss Jukka and hope to see him return soon, but God damn if Kai isn't a full on gangster on drums up there. I just want Jukka back and a new Wintersun album. Kai's a technical tyrant in Wintersun. Call me selfish :)
Not a technical tyrant in Wintersun. Many other places maybe. Coz in Wintersun all the guitars and the bass are on his level there! And that must be satisfying for Kai.
Why is nobody reacting to Jukka drum cam? He is so entertaining and his style will remain iconic for Nightwish... I could watch a whole hour of just Jukka drumming and not get bored.
Kai Hahto actually was the drum teacher to Jukka Nevalainen (Nightwish's former drummer, whom you already saw in the Ghost Love Score live recording from Wacken 2013). Therefore they have really similar, if not same abilities on amazing the masses.
Look how happy he is :) Seen him play more technically demanding songs, but I like that for him it evidently isn't about that. Might've been more when young - then the hot shots want to show the tech they've got: sometimes on the cost of the music. But youngsters are always so, I remember how it was in the 20's: you want to show all your skills. (It doesn't matter what stuff it is about, it's the in work, sports...). Now it seems Kai just loves when he can play music he likes.

With all respect to both Nightwish and Jukka (love them both), Nightwish songs are a piece of cake for Swallow the Sun's beast Kai. He's used to playing more difficult music.

Kai is clearly more advanced technically (that’s not even close), but that doesn’t mean that Jukka was a poor drummer by any means-because he absolutely is not. Could Jukka play in Wintersun? Probably not... but he’s not in Wintersun, so he doesn’t have to have insane chops like that. Personally, I like his playing a lot. He always had a very good pocket and sense of groove that worked really well in the context of Nightwish. For example, Ringo Starr is amongst the most influential drummers ever, and he was very technically limited. But his parts were often very creative and made those superb songs feel great. He doesn’t need to be able to have played in Yes, Genesis or King Crimson. With regards to the sound of the drums, there’s no way to tell what Jukka or Kai’s actual kits sound like from these kind of videos. Both drummers use top of the line drums and cymbals, that are professionally optimized and tuned before each gig. In a studio, the natural kits probably sound superb. The songs that are all mixed are also using drum samples that are being triggered by the live kits and augmenting the live sound. It makes them much easier to mix from night to night. What you’re hearing from Kai’s kit in this video is likely sound from a video camera microphone that is also picking up band instruments from the venue P.A.. Kai is using in-ear monitors, like most pros do, so you’re not hearing what he is hearing in his head. All you’re hearing is ambient sound with some delay, because all of the band volume is being projected towards the audience. As a result, everything sounds brittle and harsh... cymbals especially. Even in the professionally mixed videos, the mix engineer has an enormous amount of discretion, in addition to whomever is doing the multitracking at the Front of House mixing board. So all of this amounts to... we really can’t tell what the dry drums themselves sound like at all, in this context. 🤷🏼♂️
Okay, so what about this idea? Just look at Emppu's situation and compare it to Jukka. Emppu is a great guitarist, but he is by no means anywhere near the best in the world. But he doesn't have to be because he plays in Nightwish and Nightwish favors crisp, isolated and clear sounds over sloshing together a lot of individual sounds in one mad flurry, so a lot of the things the best of the best are renowned for is simply not needed. It actually comes from the fact that Nightwish is a Symphonic Metal band. Since they layer lots and lots of different instruments on top of one another, the individual instruments need to have a very crisp and clean sound to them since any excessive embellishment would either drown out the rest of the arrangement or get lost in it. Simply put, the ability to do mad rushes and improvs is not needed in Nightwish. At least that's the opinion of someone who hasn't played any music in ten years. If someone with actual experience wants to come in and correct me, go right ahead.
I agree with you 100%. And please remember, I like Jukka’s playing style a lot. I think the other important point, is simply the experience of being in a band. Nightwish is past two decades now. Having a bond, being able to get along with everyone on a tour bus, in addition to playing sympathetically, is all critical to any band’s longevity. Especially once you get into your forties, have spouses and children... as much as you may love your band, you love your kids more. So all these elements have to work together. Whether Emppu can or cannot play what Jeff Loomis can play, for example, doesn’t really matter. His playing works fine in NW and the band all get along well. We also have to remember that Nightwish is not just a band of musicians-it’s also a business that employs many people, and costs significant money to operate on a month to month basis. All the more important that everyone gets along and wants to continue working together.
The sound of an angel in the background😁😁
