If you stop in an active lane of traffic, expect to get hit! Do everything you can to get out of the way as quickly as possible and create layers of warning. This is not due to distracted drivers. Maybe sometimes, but when a car is in front of you, it's not immediately apparent it's not moving. The brain makes a lot of assumptions about what it sees based on what it expects to see. It's not a matter of not understanding what it sees. It takes a while to get to the conclusion.
I was led to believe that semi trailers had Westinghouse brakes, where they air to apply them and air to release them, so if the lost air for any reason the brakes would automatically be applied thus negating this problem,where trailers run off down the the road if becoming detached.
