Don’t worry Jasmine I got you, another point that you could add to the upper hand that Kpop has is the insane amount of non music content that is released by the companies. These include Variety shows, vlogs, livestreams and travel diaries. They are highly entertaining and keep the fans engaged for a longer period of time. Weverse and bubble are other apps solely for artists and fans to interact with each.

this topic is so interesting. As a kpop stan, the money the companies put towards the group is a lot more than the west is putting. Kpop also demands your full attention, puts out so much content which demands the attention our short attention spanned generation. I could barely keep up with the content from my ults during their last comeback. Even their mvs demand full attention because so much is going on. Some kpop groups have really cool and interesting concepts while the western groups don't really have a concept, their concept is just that they are a boygroup or a girlgroup. There's more variety, budget and content in kpop. Groups are also a lot more prevalent in kpop than soloists, while it's the opposite in the west so companies/labels prefer accordingly. Let's see what the future holds for the western groups

Many, many friends say that I have "pre-teen musical taste", and I just had to ignore this, because this is their hyporcrisy and insecurity screaming, and I know this because sometimes I'm listening to music alongsise them, they're digging the sound until they find out it is Little Mix, or KPop, so it's not about the music, it's about the market.

This is a huge part of it. There is a stigma against boy bands and girl groups in the West. These types of acts were in the prime in late 90s early 00s in the west, but much like anything that teen girls like. If teen girls like something then the general public decides it is bad. This is despite the fact that teen girls are responsible for a lot of acts getting notoriety but they only get critical recognition when they leave behind their teen fans a la the Beatles. Which resuts in any Western artists who wants to move forward in their career feeling like they have to leave that fanbase behind. KPOP doesn't have that stigma where they are from.

i'm a bts fan, and i've noticed that kpop groups also have a short (but predictable) shelf-life. kpop artists typically sign a 7-year contract with their company, and while there are some groups that either disband before this contract finishes or that resign for another 7 years, most kpop groups typically stay together for only 7 years. what primarily affects the shelf-life of boy groups is the 18 months of mandatory military service that korean men are required to complete. This results in group members focusing on solo music and having group comebacks that are missing members, until eventually the hype for the group declines.
bts are currently also at a place where members are beginning military enlistment, but bts have planned out their enlistment to prioritize their future as a group. the youngest members of bts won't be forced to enlist for quite a few years, but they're enlisting much earlier than required so that the group can come back together as soon as possible. bts' genuine desire to stay as a group, and all the sacrifices they've made to continue working together really inspires me. i feel like that motivation to stay as a group is missing in a lot of western groups, and it makes me feel less attached to those groups as a result.

Another thing for kpop is that they don't do just one genre of music like the typical pop and pop adjacente genres that are typically seen on the west but they mix many genres even on the same song (punk, metal, electronic, rib, etc) giving a distinctive and unique sound to the genre and the groups. At the same time groups change concepts all the time so you get a lot of variety, at the same time new groups are always popping up so you can always find something new to listen too. Also kpop groups have comebacks more often, usually twice a year, so you get way more content, and you also have way more engagement with fans (though messaging apps and live-streaming) and they give content all the time though their youtube channel or going on tv shows constantly.

one thing i feel to note abt kpop is that a lot of groups don't succeed/will eventually disband after some success. however, the companies will put those idols into new groups w/ new concepts or push a solo career a lot faster when a group disbands. for example, sakura from le sserafim has been in three groups (counting the current one). i think this is interesting to note bc it seems like a lot of kpop companies will keep pushing out new variations of groups even if they have failed groups or are forced to disband while the western market seems to just throw away the whole concept of a group once they've had one flop or disband

Sakura Miyawaki’s situation is not that common actually, her first group, isn’t even a kpop group, she was a Jpop idol part of AKB48 and their sister group HKT48 for nearly a decade and then she got into a survival show, Produce 48 and from that it is known that Produce survival groups are temporary groups, the contract is usually 2 years and any longer is good luck, but then the produce scandal happened so obviously they couldn’t extend their contracts. Sakura at one point would have to graduate HKT48 like every other member as graduation/ leaving the group is expected and they will eventually go pursue something more “mature” and Sakura went to Kpop. Your example is flawed because the survival shows Mnet is doing makes it quite public that these groups aren’t staying for long, most kpop group contracts are for 7 years but obviously a lot don’t last that long due to company issues or members leaving to pursue something else. A lot more people are leaving than usual but the so called phenomena of Sakura being in 3 groups is just a result of being in a Mnet survival show group. Sometimes kpop idol is simply a stepping stone, some just want to gain fame and eventually be a soloist and some would want to be actors or actresses, but yes more groups fail than succeed

i think a big thing missing is the amount of content that gets put out for groups. an artist can put out like 2 or 3 EPs a year which keeps the music fresh in peoples minds, there's always some behind the scenes videos, every group seems to have their own variety shows like how bts has run bts!, treasure has treasure map, le sserafim has lenniverse, etc. and thats not even counting all the shows that they can appear on that was specifically made to have idols do variety content too. and when the artist put out music they can perform at multiple music shows a week for however long they promote the song, performing alongside other artists that can maybe draw in another artists fans to listen to their music. whenever i see content for acts like one direction or 5th harmony, it just seems to be interviews or clips from concerts. theres so much to get invested in with kpop and you see so much of the members personality and chemistry. anyway if you're reading this listen to cix they have one of the best discographys in kpop

ahh no way!! i was actually the one who submitted the request and i'm so glad you wanted to make a video about this topic too! i literally love all your videos so much!! very long but here are my thoughts on this topic:
i completely agree with all your points about western groups vs. kpop groups but as a huge kpop fan i want to add a couple of things. so kpop was originally established in the 90s as a response to the big western groups of the time like the spice girls, destiny's child, nsync etc etc, but it has had over 20 years to develop since which is one of the reasons it works so well. all of the music shows and variety shows etc are all set up specifically for and to promote these groups, so they can still be shown to the general public even if the company is not a well-known one. sadly, i think this is what is holding back the resurgence in western groups because there aren't any specific places they can go to perform until they have amassed a large audience, and therefore no one outside of their fandoms are likely to hear about them. this is also the reason why i think little mix, 1d and 5h did succeed because they were formed on x factor, and so they were all known for their talents and looks before they were even put together. this is why i think groups nowadays turn to tiktok, as the fyp makes it quite easy to go viral and show their videos to people, however as a byproduct of this, fans and followers are less committed to these groups and don't interact with their content as much. anyways rant over now lol but i would love to discuss this topic with other people and thank you so much jasmine for this video!!

The thing about kpop is that it changes so fast, sure there are a lot of new groups with super young members but there's also a lot of 8+ year old groups who still have a lot of fans, continue touring and release new music like SHINee, Mamamoo, Red Velvet plus there's been a lot of reunions of older groups like Kara and Girls Generation. I really was waiting for u talk about this ever since I have started to watch ur videos...In my opinion I think a crucial point that u missed about kpop artists is their ability to deliver better fan service and fan engagements. Not to say that western artists never did this ( I was a directioner/mixer in the golden age like u😊) but kpop artists have various ways of maintaining that constant communication with the fans. For example, after a every award show or even certain concerts idols make it a point to go live through apps such as Weverse ( in older times it was vlive) where they can talk about what they are feeling, give a bit more backstory about their performance and even respond to comments from fans etc. As a BTS/ casual kpop stan, when idols do this it really makes me happy and more closer to them. In fact, idols can go live anytime like another example would be Bang Chan from Stray kids doing a live almost every week through RUclips. This is one of prime things I found very unique to kpop that western groups do not have. Secondly and most importantly, THEIR ADDITIONAL NON MUSIC CONTENT . In kpop, idols not only make music but also create content . And this is not like those Spin the harry or Megamind videos but these are carefully curated variety content. For example, for BTS it's RUN BTS, for Seventeen it's Going Seventeen etc where they have these idols indulging several fun and games and mind you these games are very intricate that u can't compare them to a simple game of never have i ever. These contents are the real source to seeing idols in a more natural and relatable way and thus make u feel like u know them. Further, shows like this are epicentre of a thousand kpop memes on the internet. In fact, sometimes these contents can become so popular that they legitimately create fans who actually only follow their content and but not so much of their music. Their content does not just end here but it even goes further to travel shows like BTS bon voyage or staycation shows like In the soop or behind the scene of their tours like SKZ talker Go. These shows have multiple episodes for example RUN BTS has 150+ episodes. When 1D gave us literally one movie This is us documenting their rise in 2012 and 2013, BTS on the hand did it literally every year with BTS MEMORIES. So all in all, another big USP as to why kpop is huge is fans not only get music but a huge deal of additional content that will constantly keep them engaged.

i think the key distinction between kpop and western groups is the fact that the kpop as an industry via the various multinational companies have much much more resources & $ and kpop as an industry has strategically deployed and grown it's market in various parts of asia and into the western markets. u can't compare the kpop groups to groups like boys world because the kpop groups you mentioned and more come with money on money. boys world is under an indie label.

another one of the main reasons the last two generations of kpop have blown up so much in the west is the focus on dancing and virality the industry has. if you take a look at the most popular western boy/girlgroups of the past decade, they either did not have a choreography or it wasn't flashy enough to capture the gp's attention. besides, the way kpop companies have perfected the parasocial dynamic between idols and fans makes the artists feel a lot closer than it did with groups like 5h, 1d or little mix the past decade. idk, these are just my two cents on some of the points you didn't mention about kpop's it factor, as a kpop fan myself who has been in those fandoms since 2015-2016

the group factor is key. you can even tell that companies have recognized that fans like it when group members get along well, and they have started to make sure that the members of the group match well with each other in terms of personalities and tastes. a group that stands out to me in this aspect is le sserafim (girl group from source music / hybe), whom despite only being together as a group for a little longer than a year (counting pre-debut training), seem to have an amazing relationship with one another. it's so evident that the company considered this when putting them together. people might think of this as something that makes kpop even more "manufactured", but imo it's better in the long run since the members might be less likely to develop animosity towards the group, as they are with people they like / love and trust.
but on the other hand, i think the factors that you've said in regard to western boy/girl bands could also be applied to how people in korea feel about idol groups lol. most people there aren't interested in them as groups, and it's only girl groups who experience consistent success with their music. this why is many companies have turned their eyes to the west (especially after seeing the success of bts).

Will they come off as a stale rehash of the old western groups, or will it shake up the K-pop scene? As for western groups, I'm really rooting for FLO, I think the main question is how heavily they've relied on nostalgia for a very specific time and sound so far. People will inevitably get tired of it, so do they have other gears?

It's interesting because I feel with kpop it's a lot more normal to have adults/older people who enjoy it. of course theres some shady comments towards that as well but i feel to most kpop fans and even on that side of the world generally it's not seen as something purely for 12-14 year olds. like people know the fandoms are usually gonna range from 14-20s and maybe even older.
Kpop groups also have a much longer shelf life, of course it depends on success but for successful groups it's not shocking that some go on into their 30s performing even when they debuted in their teens early 20s. Kpop is almost always doing something different one way or another the industry is so fast that it has no choice but to create new things after a few years so even with kpop as a whole being new a different what kpop is tends to change with every generation so people will most likely never get tired of it.
And it goes without saying that companies put genuine thought and money into debuts so the performance and concepts are way better in comparison to Western groups, in addition to fun content like variety shows, reality shows, game shows things not related to music that make the experience more fun and personable? It's amazing to me that no western companies have caught on and tried to create a group that more so resembles kpop marketing and talent because they have it down in a lot of ways maybe it's just not possible in the west though.
But I agree I really think FLO are gearing to be very successful or at least the most successful GG we've seen in a while very excited for them. Their management so far has done pretty good with making sure they're releasing content and doing enough appearances to not be forgotten and the girls are talented and have a good team behind them. I'm hoping they take it.

you made some really good points, especially about how a lot of these western bg/gg members wanted to be solo originally and were then put in a group. in kpop, a lot of groups were going to be groups from the beginning. idols on survival shows, whether it's for a temporary group or a popular group, want to be in a group. there are specific examples as well - rm had the opportunity to go solo but he chose to be in bts, and many idols don't leave unless they have to (would wonho have left monsta x if that whole scandal hadn't happened? would garam have left le sserafim if she hadn't been forced to?) even though kpop has its own formula - comebacks, certain members, animals, photobooks - different groups are still different enough to be refreshing. and being a multi in kpop fandom is a lot easier than being a multi in western fandom. i honestly prefer kpop just cuz it's more fun too. there's always some sort of content - especially when you stan multiple groups - and all of kpop feels like one big family. with the comeback interviews, and collaborative performances (chanyeol performed 'stay with me' with seola, wendy, and yuju and i love all three even though i only stan seola), and the dream concerts and kcons. there's a mix of nostalgia - seeing older groups that are honestly legends like snsd and bigbang and shinee even if you don't stan them - and motivation to work hard - all these idols worked so hard as trainees and continue to work hard for their groups and their fans.

It's very common in "heavier" genres for members to have solo projects and even be in multiple bands. Like a guitarist can write and play for like 5 different bands and singers can release solo music in a wildly different genre from their band.
Rock vocalist releasing pop, jazz, R&B solo music, imagine a boy band member releasing a screamo project. That would be so great for more versatility in music and probably also help the longevity of the band, That way members can experiment with different kinds of music without "cheating" and having to leave or disband.

All 7 members of BTS get to have solos on BTS albums and perform those songs when on tour. You got to see how they were as individuals and see how different their music styles were from each other. They are all unique and superstars on their own, they aren't dependent on 1 or 2 members to carry the group like NSYNC or Destiny's Child. They're even going into more Latin inspired music with "Dale Pa'Ya", a Spanglish song.

    • @Nissl61
      @Nissl61 Год назад +14

I'd say the west has no ecosystem for promoting smaller groups. There's no daily music shows with a dozen+ artists together. Typically artists get one late show performance per single, by themselves, for a largely disinterested audience. If you don't rate that, then you get nothing. And TV slots are heavily skewed towards critical favorites when it comes to smaller artists.
Before this TikTok era, the pop market was totally controlled by the majors. Western indie labels would never be caught dead doing a pop group, and groups had no way to put themselves together. And the major label model is to sign hundreds of artists a year and discard them quickly searching for a handful of home runs. Get in the rotation on pop radio (which plays just 10-20 tracks heavily) in few singles at most or go home. The majors completely controlled radio access. Groups are expensive, and usually failed, so the majors would not try them often. Typically just a few when the prior gen was starting to disband.
Finally I think South Korea being small actually helps. Everything is centralized in Seoul, and you can get there from basically anywhere in the country in a few hours. Makes it easy for smaller groups to do fansigns, concerts, etc. and the festival circuit is apparently massive.

the kpop being new and different one is honestly one of the factors that stood out the most. almost every single kpop group has their own distinctive songs and storylines connecting between each song and album. their group systems are also fixed positions with every group having a different dynamic with nct and it’s rotating system and multiple units, seventeen with three leaders for three units but also one leader that leads them all, and like txt who only have the leader as it’s fixed position because the members themselves are talented to not be put in one box of criteria.

  • @pizzagirl71
    @pizzagirl71 Год назад +7

You talked about this point too and I completely agree: I think the west really values "authenticity" more now, like they want artists that write their own music, have unique performances (aka, not the same choreographed dance every time), "struggled" to be known (not just put together by a producer...) etc. And that's really difficult with the boy group and girl group model, especially when there's an emphasis on the artists being "relatable." Well, it's unlikely that 5 random girls or guys will all be best friends and all be able to sing and dance equally well, so there goes the authenticity and relatability. But, these things aren't really an issue with k-pop because the point of idols isn't to be relatable, it's to be... an idol. They're completely transparent about the trainee system. K-pop is also much more than just music, it's a whole fandom subculture and it's really good at sucking you in! A lot of kpop's popularity was initially driven by Korean and Japanese fans and their extreme dedication to just one group, while in the West people are more likely to be casual listeners of multiple groups, which again, doesn't really work well for girl groups and boy groups that would depend more on hardcore fans than the general public. I personally was never actually that into western GGs or BGs (even though I was the prime age for 1D... I was "not like other girls" and I liked edgy music lol) but actually after becoming a kpop GG stan, I've started listening to Little Mix and Boys World and I really hope for the best for them! i think what i will say, for folk our age specifically and again, specially directioners, mixers etc. kpop’s modern boom came around as we’re getting to that age were we can say “oh, i don’t care if it’s cringe it’s really good and im gonna listen to it” that we perhaps didn’t feel we could do at 16-19 and also the death of cringe culture and embracing your inner child.
funnily enough it’s done the opposite to me as i dipped from 1d back in 2015, to kpop but ive found myself casually listening to old 1d music.
not to mention, in regards to ggs kpop always had a wider variety (which is what drew me to it) and it’s perhaps what kept western bg stans from converting over earlier, because of how saturated our market was with bgs producing very similar music
also, exactly as you said a lot of these idols do sign up to being in group they know what they’re getting into and they’re also allowed to go solo / sub units and stay in the group but do something different artistically.

I feel like the main thing with kpop is fan interaction and quick music. Kpop groups are expected to release something at least once a year. That’s why there’s always a lot of mini albums instead of full length albums every time the time. Kpop groups are also expected to interact with fans all the time. That’s why there’s bubble and weverse. There’s also more content outside of music like variety shows and vlogs. The industry is super saturated and moves really quickly, so kpop groups kind of have to release consistently to stay relevant. Especially if they’re in a smaller company.

  • @user215oghndghj

the thing about the kpop industry is that there are companies that have kpop idols and groups come on and peform their new songs everytime they have a comeback. Not only does this help big groups with their promotions, as they perform in all their pretty outfits which get used as background videos and edits on tiktok promoting them further, but these companies have their own followers too...
So if you are a small idol or an individual artist wanting to make it big you can appear/perform on the companies youtube and get promoted through the same streams as big artists. This way big artist fandoms may notice you and become fans of yours.
Take xooos for example. she just put out her first single Naked under a smaller company and recently appeared on It's Live's youtube channel where big and small artists alike perform live band versions of their songs. Having artists under all sorts of companies appear on the same shows also creates a more collective and familiar vibe throughout the whole industry.
I believe that the west not having these promotional opportunaties makes it much harder for newcomers to arise on their own, often ending up self-promoting on tiktok.

As someone who used to be a fan of western pop groups, and has also moved on to kpop groups now, I don't entirely agree with the inorganic creation and creative freedom reasons raised in the video. The most popular groups then and now are not created organically, they've gone through some formula, and most of time, fans don't really care about how a group was created aside for some music critics/snobs who tout authenticity. Kpop has a better formula to create groups for sure, but they suffer from many of the same issues as western groups, like limited shelf life and inorganic creation. I wouldn't say Kpop groups have much creative freedom either, they're projects are usually heavily influenced by management is also a relatively new thing in Kpop, and solo projects in between group projects is also a relatively new thing since BTS sort of made it a thing.
Imo the biggest reasons Kpop has taken over is some of the unique production of the music and high concepts of the music videos, fresh and unique sound imo is the most important thing, and western groups are too often trying to replicate each other. That's why Flo has garnered so much hype, imo, the RnB sound from a group feels fresh again, it hasn't been attempted since Destiny's Child. Another reason is that society has a greater appreciation for diversity than it did formerly as well.

The biggest difference and the main reason why K-Pop groups dominate and obliterated western groups it's the budget. Western record labels can't or aren't willing to invest the ridiculous amounts of money that K-Pop companies invest on stablishing their groups, from the MVs to the styling not to mention the training system, the skill set of the idols can't be matched by western pop stars since they weren't trained for years like idols are (with some exceptions like Destiny's Child) and can't duplicate the chroreographies, western pop groups have school talent show level chroreographies with rare exceptions (PCD) and some of them didn't even bother to dance (one direction, jonas brothers) so I don't see western companies trying to compete with K-Pop groups atm since the trend on the west seems to be DIY disposable viral tiktok solo artists that already have the 'fanbase" and are cheaper to produce and market

It's just like the changes of popular music genres for solo artists during every couple of years (2000 - 2014; Pop, 2014 - 2016; EDM, 2017 - present; hip hop/trap), since making a group with individuals can't last as much as solo artists (most pop groups last 5 - 6 years, maybe 7 at most (Excluding LM but they are a different case)) so people will naturally try to look for other groups, and by coincidence, BTS, TWICE, BLACKPINK and KPOP itself was an open door, with many more groups/creative concepts compared to western groups, it's natural they became mainstream, but like every other genre in music history, KPOP will soon decline in popularity (since BTS, TWICE and BLACKPINK (the groups that made kpop famous worldwide) are now in their last years of their careers, and without them, we must admit that kpop will lose it's mainstream.) So now, we only have to wait to see what other continent can bring more girl groups/boy bands, oceania, africa, the middle east are the only places where we haven't seen a major pop group rise to worldwide popularity, so they might soon.

im still watching but i just wanted to add that i think kpop groups have more shelf life because
1.) the main goal isnt for idols to become soloists, solos are treated as something special and also i think a lot of times kpop idols may have a stronger bond due to the trauma shared as trainees
2.) most kpop idols still manage to maintain their youthful looks even later on into their careers

Big Time Rush has quietly come back, vs. Jonas Brothers being plastered everywhere. BTR’s new stuff is great, Not Giving You Up is a bop, I get instantly happy. Jonas Brothers kinda disappointed me. But there’s not any girl groups… we need that! Kpop is offering more interaction with fans than Western music has ever done, so that’s the problem. They do capitalism better than the US who is too lazy to use modern tech and lean into it!

Actually hard disagree with the creative freedom in K-pop. Yes, there are members of groups who release solo music but most K-pop artists are often not allowed to pursue the musical direction they want because their image and sound are highly controlled by the companies they work for. In most groups, solos are not common (there are a few solo tracks here and there but they usually get no promotions and are just treated as a ''gift to the fans). Even when these few promoted solos happen, the artist has usually very little say in what the concept and song will look and sound like. Extremely detailed and strict contracts do not make this any easier. Many former idols who have left their companies or joined new ones have spoken up about this issue. Of course, there are exceptions (BTS, Stray Kids, Seventeen, Btob, Monsta x, G-Idle just to name a few) but in most groups (especially in girl groups), any sort of freedom is close to non-existent which makes it not so different from the western model after all.

I think one think that contributes to kpop groups being appealing in the west is the unattainability. Many people say that the more relatable the better, but I think that its a very fine line.
Kpop groups have their livestreams, fansign, variety content and posts on social media (even social media that is tailored for idol/fan culture like bubble, universe, weverse, the age old fancafe and previously vlive) where they can appear relatable, in some parasocial fans eyes like a friend and these interactions bring them just enough to the fans level. Then when the kpop idols do photoshoots, magazine covers, promotions, mvs etc. they seem very unattainable because of the huge production value and effort that is put into the seemingly more "professional" side of the job.

LOVE THIS VIDEO!!!!!!! so interesting. i was also a teenager at the perfect time. was a 1d girly starting in 2012 and i was a huge 5h fan as i watched their rise. i did get really into blackpink in 2020 but theyre the only kpop group ive ever really listened to. i like their music because its very... basic pop lol. it has all the pop elements a pop girly like me loves.
i think now its really hard because of your point about labels not wanting to invest. i 100% think thats a major reason. they see individual artists have 1 song go viral on TT and think thats the new strategy for everything (bc that marketing is MOSTLY free... ish) but truly labels are not putting the money where it needs to be spent. even with 5h. they worked those girls like dogs. they had no down time, had cheap videos, cheap tours, cheap choreo and wardrobe. they worked those girls into the ground gave them no time off and then wondered why they fell apart lol.
im really curious about how much was invested into girl groups specifically (im sure historically boy bands get a lot more funding a lot more easily) in the 90s and 2000s. i know destinys child was managed by beyonces dad i think... but im curious about the funding behind spice girls, pussy cat dolls, TLC, girls generation, etc. did they get the funding like 1d did?
personally i love boys world and flo. im a zillennial so im 25 about to be 26, and ill admit boysworld is a bit young for me, but i still enjoy prob half of their discography. idek how old flo is because i think their music is more mature (R&B as a genre is more mature in my brain) but i do see flo succeeding in american "pop" spaces even tho their music isnt girly pop.
please keep making videos like this! also very interested into your job im not sure if youve done a video about it (and if youre able to with NDAs and such lol) but id love to know how you got into it and how its going. love your vids always!!!!! sending so much love to you

Agreed! Kpop also has all kinds of genres ranging from Pop, Hip Hop, RnB, EDM, Rock, Tropical House, Ballads, Classical, Traditional, etc. and there's definitely a lot of songs that have really catchy and genuinely good music and many diverse, interesting and unique groups, so I do think that there is something for everyone once they give the genre a proper chance, but unfortunately, a LOT of people refuse to give Kpop a try just because it's Kpop and also because it's in Korean and the idols look "too feminine" according to them smh.
Many of them also don't know that plenty of them write and produce their own music, choreograph, play instruments and have relatable and meaningful lyrics and story lines in their songs and absolutely care about the music.

It's interesting because most of your list about why western acts are declining can be said just as well about k-pop groups too. Though I do agree that part of the k-pop appeal is because their concepts are "new" to a western audience, K-pop does have their own formulas and concepts that get recycled and that are not necessarily "original" to anyone familiar with the genre.
In reference to BTS's popularity specifically, I recommend this video that addresses some of the various reasons why they are popular that the western world doesn't really understand or try to see: ruclips.net/video/LTO3m--LoqA/видео.html

I'd also like to add that whilst western groups are inevitably going to struggle to keep up with kpop, imitating the "new formula" won't necessarily work either, especially considering that kpop is a very vast industry and each group has its own journey. Kpop groups can also have an extremely short shelf-life, normally about 7 years. The few that last tend to be the ones whose members actually like each other (lmao), which seems almost silly, but if members don't get along, there's no motivation to stick around for each other, and it's disappointing for the fans too who naturally want the group to get along.

what i find interesting. is blackswan i don't think ANYMORE has ANYONE from Korea. they're an international group based in Korea promoting in Korea. so i think the up rise of international K-pop groups is in the works and EVERYONE now since K-pop has gotten so popular they want to take it there then what we can do in the west. thats just my take. not every company or underground company is going to take an international artist and promote them always because most of Korean fans are so racist and have xenophobic behavior towards their own race and its WILD. even when Korean groups like BTS go international and these top record labels take on these groups they know nothing what to do with them and promote them ALL wrong and do album sales all wrong etc. like the Monsta x scandal that happened with interscope in 2020 i think its safe to say western groups will never be what K-pop groups are. but i wish they were. only because with being a K-pop fans since before the mainstream popularity of BTS been a K-pop fan since 2013/2014 while also being a big one direction fan i wish western artist would take a look at what K-pop groups are doing outside of just making music like the content side of things because i'd love to see a artist like Ariana grande Lana del ray, lady gaga etc. post vlogs go on more variety shows and vlive livestreams (rip vlive it would prob be instagram lives or youtube lives now) because i feel like it would keep people interested in their work then seeing them post once a month and see your favorite artist go silent for years. like the influencer vibe is what i LOVE bout kpop artists because they're not tied down to just only being an artist or tied down to their failed makeup company. if you know what i mean. (if they go the makeup/skincare route) which alot of pop girlies are doing now ie ariana grande.

I’m a Kpop stan who came to this video. Kpop is very addicting, so many groups do different and unique concepts that haven’t been done before, the music isn’t just pop it’s a lot of genres and some genres in one song it’s super cool. For example BTS has so many genres it’s insane they do pop, rap, rock, r&b, Latin pop you name it they got it. Kpop is like a whole world it’s just one big thing that’s so dope and cool. It’s amazing what these idols do they’re so talented they can dance, sing, rap, produce and write their own songs, the choreography in Kpop is super intense and out of this world they train so hard it’s incredible. I don’t think western pop groups will ever be the same I’m sorry but Kpop will continue to grow like crazy, I mean a girl group called “NewJeans” just debuted 6 months ago and they have 2 song’s already that charted on the billboard hot 100 lol.

I think kpop is successful because they don’t just strictly stick to one genre like for example bts, they do hip hop, r&b, ballads, dance music, etc like they have many different styles that doesn’t limit them to a certain genre if that makes sense. As a directioner, I wish they would’ve let Zayn do r&b styles like even as a subunit with Liam would’ve ate.
