  • How to surf ; the art of rail game is an important lesson for surfers to know.
In this video, Kale & Ryan talk through the fine details of how & when to put your board on rail successfully, and with style.
There are certain sections of the wave where different rail turns are preferable, however pushing the boundaries often leads to fast & radical progression - hence our reference in this video to none other than JJF surfing at Margies in the 2017 contest.
We also talk about the old school but still wildly relevant roundhouse cutback, with a breakdown of Taylor Knox, arguably one of the best in the world at the manoeuvre, at lower trestles in California.
Do you prefer rail or going to the air? We're still not sure.... Let us know in the comments below & don't forget to subscribe to the channel!

So true. John John makes it look so easy and it really isn’t. I’m finally starting to progress into harder deeper turns and cutbacks, falling a lot but also pulling some solid maneuvers off. Good tips guys

Found out today that I’m really wasting speed points. Probably the advice I’ve most been able to find instant understanding through your tutorials so far. I think you should mention in one of your vids too that surfing is an addiction and you will rearrange your life for the waves. Haha

I watched most of it...did you mention your backfoot being over the fins? You're not going to do any of those turns without having your back foot over the fins.

Cheers for the videos lads they're awesome. Trying to visualise and apply the tips as a goofy footer can be a bit tricky though. Any chance of breaking down a backwards brother every now n then? Northern beaches rep!

Subscribed, great content fellas thanks. I wonder if you guys also consider fin options to assist with turns, tighter using an upright fin vs long using a fin with more rake)?. Do you guys play with this aspect ? Cheers

It can get pretty detailed for sure but we go on the general info and probably get sucked in to the branding as well!

I just find that I identify the section but when I get to it I don't have enough power or speed to bring it around, and yeah i look (and feel) lame. This is especially true on beachbreaks and less on reefs or pointbreaks.. I also don't have much core though and instead a big belly so does that hinder the radicality of movement? or is it just circumstantial? Comments appreciated :)

For me it feels like the board does not want to follow me I have a carver skate board and I can rip on that thing how different is it in the warter

practice your turn in a wall and then translate into skating. ( for strongr turns lift some heavy squats witha a bar)

I find it so much easier to get on rail and do good turn on my backhand. But when I go forehand, I look like a beginner that has just learnt to pop up out the back :( I dunno why I struggle so much on my forehand

There's rail surfing and then there is train surfing or subway surfing. The later two are illegal and extremely dangerous.
