Answering viewers questions about breeding American Chinchilla vs New Zealand/Cal

- Although the New Zealand crosses are a considerably bigger animal we have not experienced the results we were looking for. The American Chinchilla still proves to be better yielding rabbits.

I subed just because the statment, "We are animals, and animals eat animals", thats what I tell people everytime the complain!
Facts is facts
@@JimsNBHomestead Agreed!
I breed New Zealand Whites and just purchased a trio of American Chinchilla's. What a difference in temperament. The AC are so chill compared to the NZW. I will be breeding in the fall and will be keeping back a lot of the AC for breeding next year. I just love them.

Great video, I remember my Uncle had rabbits, and all the white does ended up being bad mothers and would eat/kill their offspring. Yet, the brown/gray/black rabbits had large litters, and ended up keeping all the kits to maturity. Keep up the great information, and I do not know the breeds just colors of the rabbits when I was younger. Also, that was just what I remember, I would think any coat/breed of rabbit would make great does if selected correctly.
Sorry to hear that
Nice set up
it did does not work up here in the north of New Brunswick
Got recently a pair of Chinchilla rabbits. And I have older 1 NZ doe too. Bred both does. NZ brought up 5 kits, the Chinchilla lost 2 litters, and just had her 3rd one (still will see if they'll survive). So, the point is that the individual rabbit could be a good or bad mom, just don't assume that all does of some particular breed will have good mothering instincts.
Thank-you for sharing your opinion
I love visiting the rabbitry
Good information to know for those that don't have the means to experiment... I would personally opt for the AC's even though they take longer. I hear Rex's are awesome despite their medium size. Maybe try those if your next breeding attempt if the don't work out? I have a male if you want to stud and give it a try (I'm near KW).
A note on the activism: I also see where some people's intentions are coming from in that sense, but people have to realize that 90% of our culture eats meat... what a good way to do it in this case because it is essentially farm to table. That is personally why I want to get invested in a small scale rabbitry. I can't become a full vegetarian but if I can replace my chicken consumption with home raised rabbits that knocks out 4 days a week right there of factory farmed junk.
Thanks for your input
I raise rex, there basicaly the same story as the AC's, awsome mothers but take a little while to grow out but they have awsome temperments, decent size, and we butcherd our last litter at 13 weeks, so a little slower, but they are worth it.
@@brodystone I would have to agree. We were sold on 9 weeks grow out and big litters, no such luck
@@brodystone how much do the rexs weigh when they're ready? I've watched videos that say 5lbs.
@@allthingsmaloney5634 I butchered mine at about 4-1/2 ish at 13 weeks, but by week 15 they would have been 5
I want ac's it's a lot like you said looks caught my eye first. I like that they are big but not to big and from what I hear a lot they have good temperament. I got a niece that helps with my chickens. She will enjoy bunnies a lot I believe
they have great temperment and we haven't had any aggressive ones to date. They can be skittish so handling when very small helps
Sir do you still have AC?
Sadly No
I'm looking to breed giant chinchilla rabbits. Are you aware of the differences between the American chinchilla and giant chinchilla breeds. Do the giants grow faster?
American Chinchilla are not giants unless you cross them. They are a decent size and meat up nicely but to get a giant you have to cross them with a Flemish Giant
I bread Flemish Giants years ago. In comparison to medium sized breeds it takes much longer to get them to butchering condition. While you can harvest a good breed of medium sized rabbits at around ten weeks Giant Rabbits are heavier but kind of skinny at that age. You have too feed them longer and you need more cages - so they are not economical as pure meat rabbits. In addition I had the impression the Giants meat is more fibrous.
@@niviuk8335 I'm always leaning towards quantity
Our New Zealand X California are very fast growers indeed. They caught up passed the American Chinchilla Rabbit in the matter of a few weeks. I have not had the opportunity to cross a Flemish Giant with our American Chinchilla
I've read on meat groups NZ does are not nice. We are doing rex and giant chinchillas, only cuz I love this giant breed. Sweet as anything!! The rex have excellent meat and pelts but both breeds will not make weight by 8wks and we are ok with that. Better litters is best.
I thank you for your input, great comments
@@JimsNBHomestead I like this video for your comparison of your personal experience. ACs seem to be better for you. People around here seem to really like them too.
@@kidsplayrabbitry4930 I don't make things for the sake of a video. If I know something I will share it and try to stick to the facts. My experiences are my own but I gladly share them, you may experience different results.
Looking to get into American chinchilla rabbits do you have any for sale please get ahold of me. I'm here in Helena Montana if that's a concern.
If you can figure out how to ship I will do it
Hey Jim just wondering why you decided to raise rabbits instead of chickens?
We were not allowed to raise chickens in our subdivision back in Ayr Ontario. However we were able to operate our rabbitry right under their noses. We bred and sold quite a few rabbits. Here in New Brunswick in the area we are in most people mind their own business.
I have both! rabbits are quiet!
How many days until birth from conception?
28-33
Flemish giant is scares here in Nigeria..... What bred can be cross to get a giant breed..... I want to raise the for meat purpose.
Try NEW ZEALAND
Can you please show your farm?
If you go through the videos you will see a walk around on our new hobby farm.

These pets are rabbits, but you have heading indicating chinchilla? And referring to them as chinchilla.
The rabbits in the video are American Chinchilla breed. This breed of rabbit is named as such due to the fact their fur is very similar to the actual Chinchilla.
They don’t lol nz.. they look like American red eyes…
They have been crossed for meat production
I'd love to get some of those A.C. from you do you ship
