    About the album
    open.spotify.com/album/2dEkji...
The prolific MC, producer and musician Oddisee’s new album ‘The Iceberg’ is a plea for humanity to dig deeper in search of understanding and common ground. His third release in just 12 months, ‘The Iceberg’ is a distillation of stereotypical tropes in hip-hop and beyond, 12 tracks about money, sex, politics, race and religion that appear superficial until his multi-dimensional lyrics unfurl to expose the complexities of individuality and identity: how we see ourselves and how others see us. Deeply soulful, and shot through with jazz, Go-go, gospel, thick r&b and hard beats, the album is a timely, poetic statement. ‘The Iceberg’ is out now on Mello Music Group.
Lead single “Things” acts as a mission statement for the album, a deep dance groove with lightning-quick lyrics about “things” he’s going through. Says Oddisee, “"We all go through the trials & tribulations of life. Why is it we feel the need to individualize our shared experiences? If only we could see our concerns as others do, maybe they wouldn't be so serious."

Oddisee says, "I've always attempted to see polarizing issues from both sides. Being angry at the end result of a problem is the easiest thing to do. Having an understanding for why things are they way they are requires a level of sympathy I wish society possessed. If we tackle issues from the root, perhaps we as a people can be more effective in solving them. Giving context to how an officer would shoot an innocent person and showing how we're indoctrinated into our beliefs and biases could possibly inspire new methods to deal with them."

I remember listening to this when I was in my first year of college. It actually opened my eyes to the fact that we need to be more open and give people the benefit of the doubt, even if they attack you directly. It's easy to blame someone for their actions, yet almost no one sits down and tries to figure out why someone might act like that. No one is born evil.

    • @JacksonHansen-xc5kq

A person is neither good or bad by nature, he/she simply is, and if he/she wishes to continue being, may at times, fall back on more primal compulsions to do so. It's entire subjective. The world could do without such childish concepts as good/evil. The only fact in life is that there are no facts.

There's a lot of pretty smart stuff going on here. From the parallel between crystals and human development portrayed by the visuals, to the the stories of how different people started from a similar place and grew up to become vastly different portrayed in the lyrics, to the sonic development that the song undergoes. The song opens with synth chords and closes with a complex bass line which shows growth over time. I really like the message of this song. It reminds us that although we are shaped by our experiences and grow to become different people, we are all human.

It's the same sort of thinking that's caused the lack of change and innovation that the world needs.

He was grunge, I was fresh, we were young and we'd cuss along to rap and try to sneak up into punk clubs." Found this in my recommended and I couldn't be any more grateful. RUclips got it right again. I can so relate to this song. When I was younger, I had such a more open mind and the painful part is I remember how it felt to actually doubt peoples wrong intentions or mistakes because you looked with an open heart and positive mind but, as you got older, your friends that you were tight with did a 180 on you or 360 before you did and you didn't understand why. Resolutions came simple to you but as time passed you started to understand as well and realize with life it changes you and tests your beliefs, morals, and views. By this time your either depressed looking back on those blissful child hood memories you should've cherished more or strict/mean with your attitude if people don't come at you "right". Its sad really. I think true experience comes when all the hate after the love is gone and you find balance btw life and people. idk I'm still learning and I'm still young so I just hope every experience that comes to me I can learn/take in a positive way and do a 180 on it and make a change for the better. Life is too short to be bitter, angry, racist, depressed, stubborn, you have too much in your life too accomplish before you let that hold you back. Were so much greater than we think we are because life constantly tells us were not.

Lucky my best friend at the time was so much nicer than I was and got me to treat him better. Wisdom through understanding, or even through possessing the ability to show sympathy to those who cause suffering is a level of compassion that I believe our society lacks. Suffering begets suffering, and for someone as influential as Oddisee to possess and share this wisdom through such a medium is thought invoking. Props for giving him a space to express his message, props to him for using his abilities to help rather than hurt.

Justin Porter how much oddisee have you heard bro? Every single album, classic joints front to back. Classy, intellectual non-stop real music. I stand by my comment.

Justin Porter and he's self-produced, which you cant say about kendrick, and he's never used a ghost writer, which you can't say about kanye.

The whole album is amazing and seeing the views that Oddisee took and applied to life and broke it down speaks volumes. The video just puts a stamp on the inner workings of a man that thinks before he speaks. Salute to Eugene & Louise also.

storytelling is pure genious - perfectly fitting the aesthetic animation - beat is fire and i like how he changes up the kicks and his flow a lot. A true lyricist. You can tell he wants to help the world heal by understanding the circumstances that shape and corrupt who we become. only commenting to get this video more views. never stop creating bro!
