- Though the source of Sam's Burt Reynolds costume has been a well known tidbit among Critters over the years, during the twitch broadcast of Campaign 3 Episode 25, I noticed many in the chat asking why Sam is wearing this particular costume. So I thought of making this video. A seven year long gag still continuing.

I have to commend Sam for the commitment to the bit, though I feel like growing out the mustache was more so he wouldn't have to put up with the fake ones both making it difficult to speak and, as in C2, falling off halfway through the episode. I do love these historical bits though.
If that was true, it would be the slowest lesson anyone has ever learned...
Growing a mustache is not a big deal, for next campaign he'll grow a monkey.
I just realized that if C3 goes on as long as C2 did or longer, Sam's going to be wearing all those shirts with his friends' faces on them again.

Well in C2 E27 he wore a Matt shirt and in C3 E 27 he still wore a Matt shirt just a new one. So in theory he could find new pictures of his friends to tease them with and i for one am all for it.

I don’t think it’s that. Evidence would show that he’s just a man who loves committing to unnecessary, long running bits and this is the most unnecessary and long running

I saw on tiktok, someone realised that Sam is wearing the same outfit each week as he did in Campaign 2. The man is a long-term genius lol

He did the same thing in C2 for C1. He wore his Matt shirts on the same episodes, costumes, yada yada.

It's actually an older gag than that, if I remember correctly. Scanlan had called himself Burt Reynolds way back in their home game as well, and that campaign 1 episode is just the first instance where Sam introduced that idea to the Critters xD
The amount of subtle long play bits and gags that Sam has done over the years are ridiculous. From a 70 ish episode arc to turn Vex into a "witch", to an episode in campaign 2 where he wears 4 shirts in one episode so that he catches up with a "different shirt every episode". Even wearing a green screen shirt in one of the early episodes of campaign 2, because he wasn't present in the equivalent episode of campaign 1. Dude's got an incredible mind for long plays.
Actually, we heard about the pre-stream gag at, I think, 2 con panels before this. Sam being Sam recognized the crowd reaction and you could see the gears working in his head up on stage. The 1st time was the same panel where Ashley let it slip that Pike had a crush and Sam heard about Suude for the 1st time. Again, you could see Sam looking down and processing these bits of info.
I think Burt Reynolds’s was talked about even before that, possibly on one of the streaming chats they did after one of the first few episode. It was mentioned I think in passing.
@@Ginric99 Yeah, the little AMA style chats when they 1st got the stream up. Or when there was some sort of tech issue. Or when 1 or more of them was randomly hanging out at the studio. Burt Reynolds, esq, The Carpet, Grog getting his heart ripped out by the lich, and Pike's death were all bits sprinkled around in those days. That 1st con panel outside of the actual con was when we heard a lot of details (in the right order, no less) about much of the pre-stream campaign.
I don't think it was SDCC. It was relatively local, that I know.

@@Javid_74 Yeah, we didn't have channels like Critical Scope and Critical Lore at the beginning, but Critical Scope caught pretty much everything, even backtracking links.
The 1st con they did as a cast was close enough that they drove down after the Thurs session for a Sat eve outdoor stage AMA. I want to say SDCC, but something is flagging that. I've never been big on con culture. Is there a big one in LA or Burbank? GenCon LA had shut down long before, so I'm not sure what was going about 8 years ago.
Either way, I watched it on YT, originally.
That last scene, I watched it just the other day and did not even process this was happening. It was just Sam being Sam. The Moustache and outfit did not even faze me anymore 😂
Agreed. When he dresses like a raksasha / tiger is always hilarious, but his weird sh*t is just normal now.
So here's what's bad: I've watched everything. I knew this gag. I watched this episode. Did not once question the Burt Reynolds getup or think about the gag. 😅

CritRoleStats has galleries of his outfits from each season. They don't line up perfectly, but they line up enough I'm really worried for how his brain works
@@clivevii2231 he's making an exception for special events such as Halloween and live shows and also he has clearly lost a few shirts over the years(instead wearing shirts with texts like "Missing" and "Error 404: Shirt not found") but he's mostly sticking to the schedule. I'm very excited for the second half of 2023 which should be the time he's gonna wear his outfits from some live shows again
i love that no matter how big of a company theyve become, they still fuck around at the table, keeps the show grounded

Sams commitment to almost any bit is my favourite character trait.
As someone who just listened to most eps. Seeing that sam is in his smokey and the bandit outfit in the ep where he desperately want a vehicle chase makes everything more clear.
The fact that 2 campaigns in a row he wore that costume right before a big tragedy is INSANE. That outfit is cursed. If it happened in c1 I don't know about it

Sam is quite superstitious. Additionally, that's why he was wearing a tux recently as well. C2, they had just moved into their new study iirc, the last episode w/Molly. Same time this campaign, he wore the tux again to match up with C2. There's a lot of other smaller examples but I don't remember them all. It's interesting to say the least.

Coming here after LoVM Episode 11 to point out that they referenced this when they were fighting the dragon. Also I only saw this video for the first time on Thursday night, and then caught the reference Friday morning because of it.

I'm not sure why it took 25 episodes for people to notice this? He did this in campaign 2 as well. Go back to campaign 1 or 2 and you'll see what he's going to wear next week. The reason he started wearing shirts with everyone's faces on them in C2 is that he didn't have some of the shirts from C1 any more. The only real exceptions were the holloween episodes (the other halloween episodes, of course)

Campaign 2 was copying campaign 1, sometimes even down to setting alarms to take off his jacket at the same time as he did in C1.
One day, I hope I commit to a bit the way Sam commits to a bit.
I think Scanlan's Burt Reynolds bit pre-dated the stream.
The wiki page links Q&A following C1x04 (ruclips.net/video/kGxiZNbjwGI/видео.html ) where Liam describes the first occurrence of Sam's Burt Reynolds + finger mustache, during pre-stream play, to talk their way into a tower. Sam rolled a nat20 when Matt was thinking there's no way it would work; it became legendary.
That's why the main cast were falling over with laughter the instant it happened in C1x19, including Liam and Marisha's laughs being audible from off-camera. And Mary Elizabeth, who perhaps had heard the story, or just found it super funny.

I've always figured he was getting Smokey and the Bandit confused with Every Which Way But Loose, but BJ & the Bear works, too. lol

Since we talk about how certain things regardint the cast came to be ... how did the whole "Talisien is immortal" stuff began? (aside from the obvious fact he´s immortal ofc so we can leave this part behind). Did he do or say something before his Critical Role time that made people jump on this waggon?
It's mostly the fact that he has both done everything and knows everyone. Plus he looks timeless honestly

Question, is there a method behind the madness, a particular occurrence that dictates he dress this way each time? Or is just a wild and random occurrence that he chooses to do this? Cause in campaign 2 he mentioned something about the reason he did “at this time” was the same as the last time.
Unless he can't due to a live show or Halloween, or other circumstances, he tries to wear the same outfit that he wore in campaign 1 for that specific episode. For example, whatever outfit he wore for Campton 1 episode 12, he also would wear for campaign 2 episode 12, and campaign 3 episode 12. It's a very long running bit, that is totally just a Sam thing. Hopefully that made sense.

That is more or less why, yes. He was absent in c1e5, so in c2e5 he wore a "greenscreen" shirt. He was dead on for like 20 episodes, but between themed eps and various other interruptions they don't all line up perfectly.
Wait, so how exactly does it line up? He wore the Burt Reynolds costumes in episode 30 of campaign 1, but episode 25 of campaigns 2 and 3? Is it supposed to line up by episode number and that's just a discrepancy, or does it match up to something else?
