- Just my two cents on the 7th gen GT-S and 2ZZ-GE engines and some of Scotty Kilmers comments on his video.
I love the 7th gen, and the 2ZZ-GE. I own one. Does that give me some bias, I'm sure. But I'm pretty realistic, and understand that nothing is perfect, and to ask for such is silly. I'll take and work with the few flaws of the 2ZZ-GE that are present. The rewards for myself are exponentially greater.
This build for me is to simply evoke an emotion in myself. The 2ZZ-GE is the heart of that emotion, and it's not going anywhere for me!
If you asked me about any generation Celica, I'm gonna tell you that I love it. I think they all have their ups and downs, and are all worth love. They're a load of fun, and they look great doing it. RWD, AWD, FWD it simply doesn't matter.

Love my 7th gen 2zz, I got 260k original style drives like anew runner, I race all the time on fun night fridays and I slam gears, been trying to tear it up cuz I have a fully built one for it, but it hasn't let me down yet..... Scotty you needs a naps
I love my 7th gen GTS. Thanks for supporting Sir
Of course! Thank you so much for the support in return sir! I know you have a choice in who you can watch, and I appreciate you spending some of your time with me.
Now I want Arizona ice tea
GETCHU ONE!
Lol bro ok that's funny
Scotty Doesn't Know!
Rebuild 100K Detroit crusty 2ZZ and 6spd trans from Celica GTS. Rebuilt all bolt-to-bolt with Toyota parts and Toyota LSD! Now in my 01 MR2/S and it is FUN!
It is smooth at low RPM....and ROWDY when it kicks in lift (VTEC mode bro....LOL).
Don't tell Scotty, Scotty doesn't know, Scotty Doesn't know......lol!

That video of Scotty's just made me stop watching his channel. The 2ZZ can take plenty of beating as long as you service it regularly, which isn't exactly rocket science.
Same TBH. I realize now he's just making clickbait titles to try and say relevant.
Amen brotha
Done 40k km in mine, on the limiter most days. Run it on top dollar oil change every 5k. 200km on motor now. Defiantly the way it's cared for and driven. Brought a second one that I drove 100km into my 350km trip home and it shit itself first time I changed down to pass someone. I have a RunX Z and a Allex.
They'll go forever if you're kind to them. Not a ton goes super bad on them.
Love my 2ZZGE
I love mine too! I love the sound it has.
Love the raw sound and how the 2ZZ comes to life at 6200 rpm as it hits lift before screaming to redline! It's an experience more pronounced and a bit richer/deeper sounding than a v-tec of the same era.
Imo of course.....😁
Couldn't agree more!
Love the 2zz in my Lotus! Have a Sector 111 oil pan.
Bought a 02 for 3 grand with 100k on her and driven hard for another 60K with absolutely no issues. I love my GTS and my 30 plus MPG.
aye i have a 2zz-ge it blew up. i put another one in. scotty doesnt know
ive got a 2zzge onoriginal engine with 283k miles still running strong
We love to hear it!
Awesome! Got and vids/pics of your car and its odometer? How did you usually drive it? Hard all the time? Or just here and there? Any engine mods or kept it stock?
@@pinal151 it was stock and i drove the shit out of it haha! Spun a bearing though because i took her out racing on old oil. New engine is 85k miles and you best believe that oil stays fresh haha
@@SluGhR_VZ lol awesome! Did you do the oil pan upgrade or the oil pump gear oil upgrade on the new one or the old one?
@@pinal151 nah man i just had to get back on the road asap, is my only car and where im from walking isn't very easy to do
Just dont miss shift down over revving the 2zzge. Run a big risk of blowing oil pump then the head gasket as its weak. Other than that it's a hard revving powerful motor if driven right an serviced properly.
So I recently acquired a 2000 gts project. This car has been in my life a long time and has had substantial neglect the past decade. I have 240k on the odometer and I have personally seen no oil on the dip stick a dozen times. The original timing chain was replaced at 190k because it jumped time. At 220k when I got it I replaced the original clutch and all 4 wheel bearings. The car was never warmed up before use and now has low compression (158-160 on each cylinder) and will need a rebuild soon. It’s still reliable and I go on 2+ hour drives regularly and have definitely bounced the limiter. I have no problem doing a full restoration after seeing the abuse this car has taken with enthusiasm. Scotty can shut up and stick to the rudimentary engines he understands.
Running an '04 2zz. Odometer stopped at 299,999. My records show approximately 320k currently and it runs like a clock. Leaking oil is all.
Timing chain cover gasket most likely.
That's amazing!
@@FWDFanatic ruclips.net/video/8KCMj75rJ1g/видео.html apparently there's a guide or gasket within the timing chain that can also leak, bc you might fix the timing chain leak and run into another one.
I’m planning on a matrix xrs 6speed when I part out my rusty tj wrangler, has big rot holes in body, YOU KNOW? I’ve seen them around 3kish, seems like a good deal for a fun reliable car yOU KNOW? But seriously I liked the video, It seems like you were talking with no script so I understand. I’ve heard there’s a 9000rpm Ecu you can get, and also that the 2000 model celica has a higher lift high rpm cam than later years. I’ve also heard the earlier cars had 8200rpm limiter and that it was lowered in later years. Also heard there’s a few rocker arm bolts maybe it was that can be problematic. And also the oil pump and unbaffled oil pan, I think it would be a cool video to talk about some the problems more indepth and solutions, upgrades, oil pump, oil pan, etc
Sorry, for some reason this ended up in my spam folder? But I love the Matrix/Corolla XRS models as well! They're solid cars!
I have 6 speed Xrs anything I can do to just keep it in good condition…I over rev sometimes
@@miguelfitness8308To eliminate over-rev:
Spend more time looking at the tach and less time looking at where you're going.
Beef up your brakes and cut back on downshifting.
Hi I just recently bought a celica t sport not gonna track it or anything might get the lift kick in a few times but that's about it don't money shift never plan too got a nice tight gear box anyway what's bugging me is the oil pump issue what normally causes that from I've heard it is mainly money shifting but anything else that could potentially cause that
Oil starvation on hard 1G+ corners, mostly rights IIRC. $500 Moroso Oil pan with proper baffles and a 6qt capacity should make that problem not a problem. The oil pump gear explodes because either it's spun too fast (money shift) or starved of oil. You can do an upgraded oil pump gear too for added safety.
I got an 01 celica gts 6spd 2zzge. Floor it from 1st to 6th. Never broke down. 199km now and still screams. Just do Regular maintenance and you’ll be fine
100% my dude. It's really a pretty solid engine if you take care of a few things, and generally treat it right.
Would you still recommend doing the oil pan swap and if yes which oil pan
moroso forsure
Indeed Moroso. I''ts $500 but it's nearly fool proof.
2ZZ GE is a great engine
I'm looking for a 2zz to swap into my 94' celica GT. Does anyone know how difficult this process is or if it's even a good idea.
The 2zz will feel a lot more gutless at low RPM's vs the 5SFE. It's got 50 more HP, but about 30 less TQ. It's not a popular swap idea, as it'll need custom motor mounts, harness, the c60 trans, ecu ETC. But we do see them swapped into 90's Corolla's and other small cars of the era, so I don't see why not. Def just more work.
IMO a good candidate for you to make some more power would be to find a 3SG(t)E head and a few other bits, and make a 2.2L 5SG(t)E. It's been done a lot by mk2 MR2 guys to make big power, but even if you have modest goals, you can get a little more oomph out of it.
@@FWDFanatic what would be the best way to get more top end power from the 5sfe your right about the the low end torque but after like 4400 rpm theres just nothing there. Like what you were saying I'm just looking for more of modest power nothing that I want to take to the drag strip or nothing just something with a bit more power but that I can still rely on.
@@avo6939 a decent intake, 4-1 header, and a free flowing exhaust should help free up some top end. From my understanding, 4-2-1 headers will offer more mid range, while the 4-1 headers will give more high end.
Wind out 1st and 2nd off a stoplight, along side a Japanese I-4 sportbike [Yamaha], and you will know why.
if you're not really a car guy (i only know to drive, and pump gas, not much else) and just want a reliable car that could go long distances, and always run with little maintenance, are these cars good for that? I'm not planning on modding the car, or racing, or pushing the car very hard. I drive the speed limit, the fastest the car will probably ever go is 100-120. Question is are the 99-06 celicas good for that?
I like the look of the Celicas but i don't want a headache. I've been looking at Scotty videos because I plan to buy the a used car in the next few weeks and his videos pop up, seems to know what hes talking about. But for a guy like me, safe driver, do i have anything to worry about?
They make awesome Daily Drivers. I dailied mine for 3 years. It got solid gas milage when you keep your foot out of it, but even with a little bit of fun here and there I was still averaging around 30mpg. The 00-02 GT models are notorious for burning oil so I personally would avoid those unless you get super lucky and get one of the few that doesn't burn oil. The 03+ GT models don't usually show the problem. Any year GT-S are not oil burners, but the timing chain cover gasket will probably need to be replaced on 00-02 models. 03+ in both trims had a nicer black interior but command a higher price. The automatic GT-S is slow. I say manual all the way unless you do a lot of really heavy city traffic.
Thoughts on 05-06 corolla xrs
Very solid cars, although they're the same engine/transmission. You can get a refreshed ECU from R9K Tuned and it'll really open up the potential of the Corolla's. I would love to own one, and I know several other people who own and love theirs as well. I think the Celica looks better, but the Corolla has more sleeper look to it. I think the Celica aftermarket is probably larger than that for the Corolla as well.
@@FWDFanatic 2006 cXRS owner here. def a sleeper with the 2zz in the corolla.
There is also Matrix XRS with the same engine and transmission.
Are 2zz compatible to fwd xr matrix?
Can i swap my 1zz with 2zz and keep fwd, or is 2zz only compatible with rwd trans?
You can swap a 2zz for your 1zz and the trans should mate up. However, the 6 speed manual transmission mated to the 2zz is the ideal option for it. The 5 speed manual and 4 speed automatics don't stay in lift between shifts, so you can't really get all the potential out of it.
But yes, you can mate you 5 speed or auto to a 2zz.
Honda engines are driven hard, many way past their red line, and no wide spread catastrophic over rev failures due to money shifts (mis shifts).
The almost always only common thing to go on a Honda engines that is driven hard are piston rings. When they do even when driven hard at least into the several hundred thousands of miles.
I'd love to see a video of your car not having any issues after a 1st to 2nd to 1st video when you've redlined the car in 2nd. We don't lose our rings, we lose our oil pump gear. It's fairly important part, but lots of Money shift videos with hondas blowing their shit up by money shifting. There's also about 5 billion more hondas than Celicas with VVL.
Also MONEY SHIFT HONDA is the 5th suggested when you type in money shift in the search bar.
Scotty is tool, He just did a vid about a 2zz corolla and raved about the motor
Of course he did lol.
Did he make them cheaper for us
r9k from pr makin alot of parts for them
Yeah, they've really ramped up their production of parts, and it's really great to see a company producing performance parts at a good price for the 2zz.
@@FWDFanatic yea in Jamaica 🇯🇲 Barbados 🇧🇧 n antigua 🇦🇬 have alot of 2zz runnin
