i don't use photoshop nor clip studio paint, and i have found something similar in firealpaca and krita, would you consider making a video about those functions on those softwares?
For real, in my concept art class a girl kept asking our teacher the "secret" of art. And those who knew how to draw were like "Uhm, 30 years of career in the field maybe?" and she was like "No, I know, but I want to know THE secret of art", haha
Its always so strange(yet cool) to see artists you follow watch other artists that you'd never have thought they'd even know of. Mostly because the art mediums are completely different, but also- what are the odds!
This is a powerful technique that is great for illustrators and even for more "fine arts" focused artists. This separates value and color. You really want to practice multiple methods as there is no correct method. Some artists prefer using a painterly style with laying down paint and refining. This isn't wrong. Experiment and find your own process. However, this is a great way to create fast colored paintings. Any concept artist not using this gradient method will not be as productive as those that do.
My God, I've been studying anatomy for 8 months now and drew everything only in gray-scale. Not only do I no longer need to specifically retrain to draw in color, but all my drawings can be colored EASY-PEASY now - so that they are not just an intermediate learning stage, but can be completed. I just colorized one in 30 minutes in Krita - there is such a feature here too. OMG thanks
@@onewingedcat7172 I use "Analytical Figure Drawing" course by S. Michael Hampton, PROKO - Anatomy Course and Alexander Ryzhkin courses. And Goldfingers book "Human Anatomy for Artists". Also for faces (I started with portraits) I used advices of Angel Ganev. Now I will most likely add a course from Marс.
Hey Marc! I'd like to add in addition that Krita's 5.0 update also updated the gradient map engine. I use Krita for all my work and I'm really happy that I can use the gradient map process without much of any issues in Krita now as well. It's a little slower than photoshop in terms of performance but the results are virtually the same. Thanks once again for your updated perspectives on techniques you've been using and developing over the years. I find I can always learn something new or be reminded of something I've forgotten =)
Thanks for commenting this. I'd just scrolled down to see if there was any mention as to whether or not Krita had this before trying to find out online. Now all I need to do is update it.
Been using Krita for years. Best brush engine no contest, and it does it while being free. Aaron Blaise recently started posting his work, using Krita, and it'd be great to see another one of the big guys endorse it's viability.
I'm really proud about the fact that I can now understand much of the stuff Marc talks about. I draw from a year and half now, and when I started I watched his video understanding NOTHING. I never believed I could understand what a gradient is, or how to color with selection. He's been a great teacher.
This is the only way I color, really. I hate coloring by hand, and I usually get lazy in that process. BUT when I do it this way I don't lose focus and interest! Really helps!!
This is amazing. My mind was blown the moment he started selecting parts of the image to do different gradients.... damn. So simple, yet changes so much. Going to try that now.
I joked about it in a previous vid, but Marc really is getting closer to "I've been an art teacher longer than the age of universe, In this episode I will teach YOU the secret to Immortality!" Jokes on you though Marc. I already know the secret to Immortality... ...It's reference. He's been showing us the way all along.
I kept watching your coloring videos like countless times already, even working, I'm using it as background noise lmao. Ever since I started digital painting I directly used colors, but now I got hired and my client told me to change some color, it took like forever and there are too many things to change. But now I tried your coloring style. I can see how flexible it is. Thank you so much Marc!
I had discovered gradient maps a long time ago but thought it required way too much post-editing to make it worthwhile. But what you do AFTER gradient mapping is the answer I was looking for. Thank you Marc. Again you are extremely helpful and kind. I use Krita and it's gradient tool is much improved.
I'm new to art and still learning the basics... But this is awesome. Can't wait to use it some day. Just have to figure out how to actually draw characters first lol
I've been rewatching your videos along with Term 1 stuff. With your personality, and way of teaching; and production, I feel like your video content will be timeless. One day I'll tell my kids that Uncle Marc helped me get better at character creation/design.
This is an amazing technique, but I find it really hard and practically unusable for painting environments, especially landscapes . With so many color variations (with trees, bushes, flowers, clouds, sky, grass, water, etc) the gradient maps end up being a mess. But its a great technique for character painting and concept arts.
This feature doesn't seem to exist in the mobile version of photoshop, however, I noticed that you can achieve a similar effect by putting a "Levels" or "Curves" adjustment layer on top of the shadows layer. It's not as flexible as a gradient map, but at least you can have some colour gradients along your shadows.
Mans getting more and more creative with the intros❤️😂.. Tho medibang paint pro may not have gradient maps when i'am painting in greyscale method I get a little bit creative with what i only have, put the greyscale shading in multiply then apply my base colors under it then add another layer with dodge or overlay for final touches..I might use my photoshop again cuz of this feature😂 Thanks again for the helpful classes my dudes❤️❤️ early
Amazing class! I always wanted to do grayscale to color but I never found a good way. Thank you so much for the free gradients! You’re a lifesaver ♥️💙 love you Marc
owww i love you so so much! yesterday I was stalking all your youtube channel locking for your last class with gradient maps ahahaha and now I see this! I really really thank you
Another big brain move would be to shade each section on a separate layer, then you won’t need the lasso tool. 😎 Thank you for this video, I miss Photoshop now that I’ve watched it. I do like Procreate tho, but I can see how some things are just better on Photoshop.
What I love about this is that while it works well on its own, you can then go in with a more traditional approach once you're happy with your final gradient selections and paint over sections yourself!
I am really enjoying your these tutorials and techniques you use. I am a self taught artist and after waste about 2 3 years taking advice from artist tutorials that didn't really teach me much but to copy, your tutorials and what you said is so true. Now having to re-learn gesture and form then line art has just made the process more easier
I'm not really a fan of gradient map coloring because I don't know how to use the tool very well. The eyedropper tool has been faithful to a good extent. Thanks for another video Marc! I like learning more things. 🙂
I can't explain how grateful I am with this video!! Sometimes I used the gradient map, but in the wrong way but you explained really well and some things that I didn't notice before!! When I finished the video I rush to my program and tried the tip hehe TYSM
thank you so much for expanding on your last gradient maps video!!! some info was glossed over in the sped up painting footage & this really clarified any questions i had!
Wow never knew this and I use masked and gradients on the time especially in After Effects. Tri-tone but masking elements in AE works the same but haven't used it in this way. Thanks for the insight 💫
Hi Marc, Im not a professional painter, but now I learn these lessons for a.. oh, you know. Hope one day to join your Artschool as a student. Very inspiring materials! Always waiting for more.
Yep back to gradient maps for me lol Been trying different methods to go from greyscale to color for the hell of it these last few weeks. While they've been fun, it's too time consuming. Thanks for this!
This is the best video I’ve seen on color. I’m beyond grateful for this shared information. It’s given me a renewed confidence that I CAN do digital art. Now I just need to buy a new computer since my last one died on me for the second time. I promise to sign up for some classes once I get my tools in order.
Thanks so much for this video. I usually keep up more with your videos but I've been very busy lately thanks to how your videos have helped me grow! I already start my work in greyscale, but I've always done the coloring using overlay, multiply and add layers. I'm excited to try this out soon.
Always wonderful and always helpful art class every week. Some of the classes recently, weirdly enough have been on things that I'm struggling at. While also giving new techniques to make it easier. Thanks Marc and great job as always.
Oh this is big brain energy. It's so interesting hearing about it from a professional point of view. I might not use this so much when I make art on my own time, but at work this stuff would be such a time saver if you make stuff for other people who could change their minds about something constantly
My secret technique is... not so secret anymore. Oh well hope it helps.

it's no secret anymore but you changed my life! Thank you so much prof! ^o^
Marc's biggest art secret is how long he's been a professional artist now
What do you mean? We all know he's been a pro for [REDACTED] years now

Heyo Dollightful, how's the hubby n baby?
If you don't mind, teach us how to paint with good cell shading and rendering, Marc! :)
yes i need a cell sahding tutorial
What is cell shading anyway ?
@@OrdinaryPersonah I think it is like this hard flat shading which gives a non-photorealistic look (according to what l got from google)
@@aliciasam5239 basically. cell shading is the type of shading frequently used in cartoons and anime
YES PLEASE! Maybe for next week's class?

And here I thought shading on a multiply layer over flats was efficient. This is much more dynamic than I was expecting.
Marc: "you wish you had these gradients as a starting point"

Marc's timing is impeccable! I was just thinking about learning gradient maps.
I don't think I have ever learned more in a single art tutorial. My mind is blown
