During Jeff Lynne's ELO 2019 Tour, many reviews agreed in saying they are the best live Classic Rock Band in the world still touring and Jeff Lynne is a Music Genius( From Forbes Magazine and the Washington Post). ELO is in the Rock Hall of Fame. Lynne is on the Hollywood Walk Of Fame and Birmingham Walk OF Fame. Jeff Lynne’s ELO won the Best Classic Rock Band plus Lynne won the best Songwriter award ( ASCAP ) in 2019 for his fantastic contribution over the years. In October of 2020, Jeff Lynne has been made an officer of The Order Of The British Empire for his extraordinary contribution to music. He previously has received three Ivor Novello Awards, which celebrate songwriters and composers, including the award for outstanding services to British music. He created the best Super Group of all time with his best friend George Harrison, The Traveling Wilburys. I am Japanese. I was 14 years old when I discovered this song. I felt something unfathomably fascinating, but I had no friends around me who understood it. Decades later, I have listened to many different genres of music, but even listening to it again now, the mysterious charm of this song has not faded at all. However, I sometimes wonder how I would have approached it if I had mixed it with live orchestration.
Hi. I am South-American. My case is very similar to yours because the first time I watched that video on TV I was 13 years-old and I was fascinated with the music and the video…. I began to love all those “exotic”, mysterious and beautiful women, wow!
Hi there. If you're referring to the song 'Secret Messages' I don't think it has a particular meaning except what you wish it to be. For myself I take it as a relationship between me and a lover and what it may hold both now and in the future as in the line "There's danger ahead" etc. Try listening and putting your own spin on it 😀

Like others I have to agree, but for myself EVERY ELO album is so. Just because a particular album didn't have a Top 20 or so hit song on doesn't mean it wasn't and good! For me the one exception and I'm sure people will disagree is "On The Third Day" although the concept is still brilliant and I love listening to be the tracks 😀.

1983 on #mymusicalroadto50 Electric Light Orchestra - Secret Messages Since getting “Out of the Blue” and “Discovery” and managing to acquire most of their back catalogue during this time, I’d got “Time” from my sister for my ninth birthday, so I was ready when this album was released in ‘83. I was never keen on the singles they released post Xanadu though, and much preferred the album tracks. Ok so this was eventually released as a single, but when I bought it in Woolworths they’d only released “Rock and Roll is King” which I didn’t really like at all. So upon putting the needle down and hearing this track it felt like my faith in the band had been restored. I like this one a lot.
Jeff !...Secret Messages-a brilliant sound melodic song for all time ! Just so you know - You and the Electric Light Orchestra-Have been loved in Russia since the 70s....!
Jeff Lynn was known for liking to put subliminal messages in his music. This song came out about the same time there was a panic over subliminal messages. People fearing it would feed satanic or or bad things in childrens heads. Hearing the words for this song, I feel he is trolling the people that were pushing censering this music. I have been a fan of ELO since the 70s. If you listen to the lyrics, you will see A lot of ELO's music is very tongue and cheek. I always liked this song and video. Plus the womwn (even though in typical 80's music video attire) are hot.

Wow, 37 years ago!....look how young they all were...A delightful gem, 1983's Secret Messages album. Jeff Lynne (Lead Vocals/Guitar), Richard Tandy (Keyboards), Bev Bevan (Drums), Kelly Groucutt (Cello) and Mik Kaminski (Violin). This was pretty much the last of Kelly and Mik, they barely hung in there until the end leaving ELO as a trio for the rest of their run. Reportedly album and ticket sales were slow for the "Time' tour and this marked the beginning of the end of ELO. Contractually, Jeff and the boys coughed up one more album, Balance of Power in 1986. This album was delightful but received very little promotion from CBS. At this point they all just wanted out. Secret Messages is outstanding and has plenty of pop rock hooks to keep you busy for 47 minutes. And, it did receive a boost in sales when the Coffee Growers Cooperative used the track "Hold On Tight" to blitz radio and TV by advertising the benefits of drinking coffee with this blaring in the background! ! Balance of Power on the other hand delivered a few superb tracks full of the usual Jeff riffs but the strings were all but gone throughout the album. You can tell the minute the stylus hits the vinyl that this thing was slapped together with drum machines and duct tape. The single "Calling America' was ELO's last gasp that peaked at an impressive No. 18 (not bad for a band that's wheels were about to fall off) on the Billboard singles chart and had an accompanying MTV video that was tragically, barely rotated. No fault to Jeff, he wanted to grow and experiment, and for the next 37 years he continued to awe and delight the world with nothing but brilliance. If you like The Electric Light Orchestra, you may like the solo albums that a few of it's members released over the years. Richard Tandy got together with Dave Morgan and released the LP 'Earthrise' in 1986, Kelly Groucutt released "Kelly' in 1982 (Which is quite good and features several ELO alums) and Mik Kaminski released 'No Cause For Alarm' under the name 'Violinski' in 1979. I own all all of these and they stand on their own merit very well. Here is the news.....S!

@@classicrockfan8034 He was determined to get out of his birthplace city of Birmingham to fill his ambitions, and he surely did just that, and much more than he ever anticipated; I love all his music.
I'm pretty sure he called it that because the band is officially called now. Electric Light Orchestra released the song, but he saw Jeff Lynne's ELO perform it.
TOTALLY AGREE WITH YOU ANOTHER LEGEND ONE OF THE BEST BANDS EVER TO EVOLVE I THINK YOU'RE AMAZING 🥰 MR LYNNE AS YOU SAY NO AIRES AND GRACES HAS NEVER FORGOTTEN WHERE HE CAME FROM XXX ❤️🦋🌈
This album along with “Time” are both heavily under appreciated. They are masterpieces and belong in the same conversations with any artist works of the 70s or 80s.
"Time" was never underappreciated. After it, I feel like they started becoming pure pop music. Maybe Secret Messages was under-appreciated, but it's not on the same level with Time or Eldorado, for example. Solid but not too great. The worst album is Discovery IMHO. Pretty boring except for the last song.
@theflyingwing not going to even pretend to understand the many subtleties in ELOs music or videos, but as a longtime audio engineer and music artist myself I would say that in 1983 these guys were very advanced in their utilization of electronics and effects within the music and the ability to communicate ever so softly with it. This song has stuck with me ever since I first heard it when I was back in High school in the 80's, don't think I realized the depth of the song until now. Cheers!
DOn't you think the production is rather thin and horrible? I imagine how this song would sound if it was produced the way he did Out of The Blue. Meaty with the bass jumping out and drums sounding great. It would be far better wouldn't it?
Jeff Lynne and ELO were ahead of their time. In the '80s the idea of the planet Saturn as a broadcasting station was, well, kooky and crazy, but today many people, for instance, David Icke speaking at Wembley two months ago, are talking about the Saturn-Moon matrix. The pyramid is ubiquitous now - in music videos for starters. My secret message to Jeff - you said you would tour the US in 2015 - please come to the Washington DC area, we love you here. Thanks for posting.
"The song begins with strange effects and a backmasked voice (saying "welcome to the show")... followed by a burst of morse code spelling out E.L.O..." how genius is that :)
The 1980s were the 'Golden Age of Music Videos'! [:-)] They were fun back then. Then in the 1990s & since got too 'serious'. Same year 'Return of the Jedi' was released! A great era. I was a teenager.
This is a special LP edition of Secret Messages. The album version included a short Prologue plus a longer ending which merged into the beginning of Loser Gone Wild. It's still good though! =-D
Have always loved this song. As a songwriter vocal arranger and producer ; Lynne is endlessly fascinating in the way that he can create a visual component with a palette of notes and sounds.

Jeff Lynne is one of the most versatile musicians ever, this is why he is considered by his peers to be among the greatest. He didn't stick to one style of music because, after decades, it gets boring. Jeff has done progressive Rock, Symphonic Rock - Pop, New wave, and Disco.
Everything he does turns to gold. He even flirted with Country music. From 1972 to 1986 (During 14 years) Jeff Lynne's Electric Light Orchestra has had more top 40 hits than any other group in the world... 51 years later they still play in sold-out Arenas, festivals and Stadiums.
The Legends in the Music Industry call Jeff Lynne the best overall Musician ever and a Producer Extraordinaire. Jeff Lynne has written and produced many hit songs for music legends like George Harrison, Roy Orbison, Tom Petty, Joe Walsh, Brian Wilson, Paul McCartney, Ringo Starr, Bryan Adams, Aerosmith, Del Shannon, the Everly Brothers, The Beatles, and so many others...
@@classicrockfan8034 He was determined to get out of his birthplace city of Birmingham to fill his ambitions, and he surely did just that, and much more than he ever anticipated; I love all his music.
I guess you know him personally
I love this song
Hauntingly beautiful song -- Jeff Lynne is a truly towering talent.
Great song! Says a 16-years old male from Finland.
Torilla tavataan.
Age is merely a number :) Electric Light Orchestra is for everyone :D
Your great country gave birth to Nightwish, respect!
a male what?
ELO, is one of the best 👍👍👍😘😘😘❤️❤️❤️
qué tremenda canción Dios mío...Elo es de los mejores grupos de todos los tiempos
Music of my childhood ! I'll never forget ❤️
It was wonderful to hear this song played live last night by Jeff Lynne's ELO - what a treat!
I bet it was fantastic :) Shame I can't really go to any of the concerts :/
Wish they'd played this last week at Wembley....love it!
I'm pretty sure he called it that because the band is officially called now. Electric Light Orchestra released the song, but he saw Jeff Lynne's ELO perform it.
Eloissulpergenialband
Supgreatsong
One of the best songs ever!!
Masterpiece!
I haven't heard this one for LONG time...but it still sounds as good now as it did then! Good ol' ELO!!
Brilliant!
There's no mistaking the Genius of Jeff Lynne , the lyrics, the music, got it all..endless longing in his songs...
ELO. They might make few top 10 bands lists, but they will always make mine.
We are lucky to hear those message.
Samuel Morse would agree....
tbe only messages I get are from my stupid friends on texts on my mobile!!!
Jeff is pure genius !!!
Wow...I've tried to drum this fast...can't...how does Bev keep it up, I wonder? Needs terrific energy ! Impressive indeed!
The '80"s gave us so much good music. I have not been impressed much since by what I've heard. Call me nostalgic.
Agree 100%
In my opinion Secret Messages is the worst ELO album but it's still a amazing album. I do agree about Time that album was just amazing.
Впервые послушала. прилипла. Это шикарно!!!!!
First listened to ELO on 1976. Still enjoy them today. Never get sick of them!
Électric Light Orchestra, for ever and ever. ❤
Still listening to ELO in 2021
Oh yes 😊
I love Electrical Light Orchestra!!!!!.
This sound is still in my ears for all the years
I love the speedy rhythm. It's a well produced song. An absolute pop classic.
This is a superb song,
À écouter sans modération, les cheveux au vent, sur le Highway qui longe la mer, ... indescriptible ♥️✨
ELO por siempre Saludos de Chile amigo

Jeff Lynne and ELO were ahead of their time. In the '80s the idea of the planet Saturn as a broadcasting station was, well, kooky and crazy, but today many people, for instance, David Icke speaking at Wembley two months ago, are talking about the Saturn-Moon matrix. The pyramid is ubiquitous now - in music videos for starters. My secret message to Jeff - you said you would tour the US in 2015 - please come to the Washington DC area, we love you here. Thanks for posting.
"The song begins with strange effects and a backmasked voice (saying "welcome to the show")... followed by a burst of morse code spelling out E.L.O..." how genius is that :)
seriously?
Budi Rahardjo yep! You can hear it on the album version here ruclips.net/video/lUm73eO8Km0/видео.html
The best secret is always in plain sight! Anyway, I love this band.
@@rahard Yes.Morse code, an electrical signal can be broadcasted either way.0 or1.
A 0 or 1, isn't new to anything.
great song, off a great album by a great band! never get tired of these guys. thanks jeff- still listening!
The 1980s were the 'Golden Age of Music Videos'! [:-)] They were fun back then. Then in the 1990s & since got too 'serious'. Same year 'Return of the Jedi' was released! A great era. I was a teenager.
I listened to this album a lot when I was in my early teens and also in my early 30's. Great double album.
Best Music ever from the 70s and 80s ELO
This is a special LP edition of Secret Messages. The album version included a short Prologue plus a longer ending which merged into the beginning of Loser Gone Wild. It's still good though! =-D
The bass line from 3:15-3:28 is ear candy... I love this song!
Awesome Bass all the way through 😀 R.I.P. Kelly Groucutt. 😞
I love that bass line
@@bridiemaloney4422 Unfortunately, it wasn't Kelly playing on it.
Have always loved this song. As a songwriter vocal arranger and producer ; Lynne is endlessly fascinating in the way that he can create a visual component with a palette of notes and sounds.
Casey Moo Yes it is staggering how he does that. You have hit the nail on the head Casey
