I have a huge amount of respect for the two of them. I appreciate the blunt honesty put into the lyrics and the fact that they're not backing down from what is morally right.
To everyone throwing salt: Macklemore has been in the game for over a decade in the underground scene in Seattle. I'm a Seattleite and heard about him as far back as 05 when a friend of mine sent me a song of his (The Town, great song btw) via Skype. He loves hip hop, respects the culture, and gives up props to the OGs. He had Sir Mix A Lot in his White Walls video, but Nicki Minaj sampled Mix A Lot's song for Anaconda and didn't even have him in the video for a little cameo (Sir Mix A Lot mentioned in his VladTV interview that he would have liked to have been in the video, so she may have not even asked him). Oh, and btw, I'm *Black* (East African). Please stfu, geezus.
I adore Macklemore and Ryan Lewis. They are fantastic and I really get inspired by them and their music. Going to their concert was one of the best things I've ever done.
I'm old. I never listened to his stuff before 2021. My son had posted "Otherside" to his FB page a few years back. When he died of fentanyl poisoning on 1 January 2021, I listened to all the clips he had posted. That one hit hard! The more I know about Mackelmore, the more I respect him.
I honestly thinks that it's sad how an artist like Macklemore would be one of the first artists who just was just pushed out of the hip hop mainstream or ridiculed for just being different. Macklemore was talking about shopping at thrift shops at a time where one of the biggest songs around that time was about Versace, was making songs about gay people in a time where no one else was doing that, and because he pulled the Impossible by beating 4 hip hop heavyweights in the best rap album category, we killed him for that, it's terrible. Now today with people complaining that everyone sounds the same, we had a rapper that was different from the norm and yet we pushed Macklemore away.
Macklemore...Ben...stay strong. I know he'll never ever see this but I've had similar struggles. I was on heroin and the downfall was fast and extreme. I fight every day...I have dreams about using still 7 yrs later. I didn't care if I died and didn't want medical attention if I did OD. I wish more rappers would be honest about this stuff and stop sensationalizing...because of the sensationalizing, my 15 yr old brother is an addict in full form...and we are afraid we cannot save him..
I'm not Macklemore, but I read it. I no, I don't know you, but I was so happy to read this & proud you kicked that shit..1 life saved! Not many can say that..heroin is one wicked ass drug to beat! Stay strong, you have 7 years behind you & that is an accomplishment! Hopefully your brother will look to you for strength & guidance! Don't give up on him! Sending prayers he will turn his life around soon, I can't even imagine what your going through, he's so young!
That was in 2014! Imagine now, 2016, after "Downtown" with Eric Nally! They were amazing then, but now after "Downtown"......I'm dead with addiction on that song! Great job Ben and Ryan. Smart minds. Credit to Eric Nally too, amazing voice. like if you know Eric Nally, if you don't search him up!!!!
Macklemore, you're a lovely human. I hope when you talk that you aren't just sort of saying the things that...I don't know...that make you SOUND lovely. It's something I've done myself so I'm not judging. I hope you take each day and experience it. I hope you look back when it's all over and say "I did OK." I hope you make mistakes and withhold from chastising yourself. I hope you continue to be you.
Was "unusual" the best choice of words for this anchor? It wasn't the usual topics wich means Mack's music is technically unusual but it has a befit ice connotation
Its great that a celebrity finally got IT right! The "it" being their public behaviors, their views on what's going on in the world (good & bad) how they handle fame, personal issues & short comings, etc. I can't stand when a celebrity condescends on us regular folk like they can relate to something they are totally clueless about. I'm tired of the ones that jump on any bandwagon thats getting attention so they can get noticed & some get some extra publicity (especially on social media)The ones that have raczor sharp focus to scrutinize everyone else's short comings but are completely blind to their own. The several that take every opportunity given to have their voice heard in support of whatever situation/charity thatspopular & getting everyone's attention. Celebrities that act like their famous for being on a reality show. Your not a star possessing talent that others don't have access to. Recording a sexual romp isn't the "talent"thats required to make you deserving of a Marilyn Monroe level of celebrity. you got lucky with a reality show, now stfu already. Celebrities that seem to feel that they are in a position to advise us on things such as religion, politics or civil duty vs just entertaining us with using their talent & art. Bryan Lewis & Macklemore found the right formula to relate to people, show they are down to earth & haven't let fame go to their heads, they support their beliefs but don't use every opportunity to do so, admit their imperfections & lend support to other who are still struggling. For this stuff and so much more. These guys are the definition of what a celebrity of the people should be like.
Ben, if you're reading me (sorry for my english ^^), let back your red pen and remember "Otherside". You impressed me by your personality and your ability to controver your difficulties and make it as a force. Please, please if you're reading me, don't let anything else than what defines you, driving your own way to the life your what to live ! When your acting in connection with what you want it happening in your life, everything go to this idea and it leans to a project. Listen "Otherside" en boucle, it made me have a revelation. I've seen my people's dreams die I've seen what they can be denied And "weeds not a drug" - that's denial Groundhog Day life repeat each time I've seen oxycontin take three lives I grew up with them, we used to chief dimes I've seen cocaine bring out the demons inside Cheatin' and lyin' Friendship cease, no peace in the mind Stealin' and takin' anything to fix the pieces inside Broken, hopeless, headed nowhere Only motivation for what the dealer's supplying That rush, that drug, that dope Those pills, that crumb, that roach Thinkin' I would never do that, not that drug and growing up nobody ever does Until your stuck, lookin' in the mirror like I can't believe what I've become Swore I was goin' to be someone And growing up everyone always does We sell our dreams and our potential To escape through that buzz Just keep me up, keep me up Hollywood here we come read again these lyrics… I cried on it each time ! It made me suffer but feel good and I sing every time, it make me happy. You make me happy. Eveeytime I listen to your music I dance and sing ! Love you
Love Macklemore, love the message behind his music, and love his personality. But can we all "Mackleless" this year? I mean until he releases new music, we can mackeless with this old one.
Everything he says I agree with besides the trayvon thing he's famous for going against the flow and it makes it that much more sad that he has to go with the crowd instead of thinking in his own
Anyone that can write Rhymes and he can write, has the ability to reach an audience through what they have gone through or believe in, but I dont believe a word he says. thats why I took the time to respectfully comment.
I wish it was real but still would suck that one video where he is detoxing from drugs in the video it's a hard thing to go threw wonder if he really was with drawing in the video
I don't think Mackelmore is preachy. He's a smart guy that believe's in equality. He should be screaming it from the rooftops.
you should scream it from the rooftops
Me to
I have a huge amount of respect for the two of them. I appreciate the blunt honesty put into the lyrics and the fact that they're not backing down from what is morally right.

I've seen my people's dreams die
I've seen what they can be denied
And "weeds not a drug" - that's denial
Groundhog Day life repeat each time
I've seen oxycontin take three lives
I grew up with them, we used to chief dimes
I've seen cocaine bring out the demons inside
Cheatin' and lyin'
Friendship cease, no peace in the mind
Stealin' and takin' anything to fix the pieces inside
Broken, hopeless, headed nowhere
Only motivation for what the dealer's supplying
That rush, that drug, that dope
Those pills, that crumb, that roach
Thinkin' I would never do that, not that drug

Until your stuck, lookin' in the mirror like I can't believe what I've become
Swore I was goin' to be someone
And growing up everyone always does
We sell our dreams and our potential
To escape through that buzz
Just keep me up, keep me up
