  • Painter Tod Lychkoff moved to 810 E. 3rd St. in 1987 and maintained a loft on the 4th floor until 2009. In his more than two decades in Downtown Los Angeles, Lychkoff was a prolific member of a community of artists that transformed a sleepy industrial quarter of the city into a vibrant and rapidly growing Arts District. His paintings and scratchboard drawings reflect the beauty, as well as the danger and despair, of an urban existence.
Lychkoff and his wife, Catherine Lugo-Lychkoff, now live in Long Beach, but for a few years after leaving the 3rd Street loft, he occupied a gallery/workspace on 4th Street, where he created his large-scale paintings and interacted with passersby. Lychkoff was interviewed at the American Hotel in February 2014 for “Tales of the American,” a documentary feature about the Downtown L.A. Arts District, Al’s Bar and the American Hotel.
Filmmakers Pamela Wilson and Stephen Seemayer interviewed more than a hundred artists, musicians, writers and others who lived, worked and partied in and around the American Hotel. They are periodically releasing (in alphabetical order) edited versions of these interviews on this channel.
