  • A ball travelling horizontally at 10m/s strikes and sticks to the tip of a 3kg rod which is 2m long and initially hanging from rest. The rod is connected to a frictionless pin.
As the ball strikes the rod, the rod and ball swing upward.
In this problem we will calculate the angular velocity of the rod and ball immediately after the collision, the maximum height to which the center of mass of the system will rise, as well as the maximum angle from vertical to which the rod and ball will swing.
This problem is centered around the Conservation of Angular Momentum, which separates it from the more common version of this problem which is centered around a Simple Pendulum and the Conservation of Linear Momentum.
This problem commonly comes up in Introductory college physics as well as AP Physics C Mechanics. It also appears on the JEE and A Levels

I've gone through dozens of videos to help explain this kind of problem and this is the first one that made me understand what what happening conceptually, thanks so much!!
