- With mechanical keyboards becoming more and more mainstream and the lines between what a gaming keyboard is becoming more and more blurred I decided to make a video to look into what exactly makes a gaming keyboard different from any other mechanical board and IF there is actually any benefit to be had to the hardcore gamer. Should you go Razer or Corsair? Ducky or DROP? What's better, a gaming keyboard or an enthusiast keyboard? The answer will be different for everyone based on your desired traits but which ever side of the fence you fall on this video should help you decide.

My keyboard has WASD lit up in a different colour by default. So gaming.
If it has RGB, it's High End gamer
I love the background lights where you get em
Its K those are phillips lights
Great video. Loved the history touch as well. I didn’t hear any mention of features like “N key rollover” or “ anti-ghosting.” Do all modern keyboards, as opposed to gaming branded keyboards specifically, have this baked in, or was that not mentioned? Thanks.
Still have the 2010 blackwidow with blue cherry mx switches. Still great, not faded or worn looking: just like new (Ordered small ducky now though) *2013 version apparantly
Gaming kb is what gets you into custom keyboards. That is what is for !
My mechanical keyboard journey started with k70, which I basically solely used for 2 years than tried cheap keyboard with clicky switches. And here is the moment I started to get into customs. Tried my first 60 percent anne pro 2 and started moding it. I failed to mod it unfortunately. But I didn't gave up and bought hotswap board. I used it for some time, but was really missing amazing software of anne pro 2 and bought secone one. And used it for some time. This was around the moment I got into real custom mech keyboad world and ordered my first high end mechanical keyboard - kbd67 mk ii. I was very pleased and surprize how good kb can be. Basically after that I became enthusiast and bought ton of switches and also drop alt because I wanted that super rgb and it was quite cheap (around 100 euros), why not ? XD
Kbd67mkii is... not high end. Lol
thx for the insight, keep it UP
The first mechanical keyboards branded as gaming are Steelseries I believe. 7g and 6g model around 2007/2008 :) (with cherry blacks)
Razer were always late and at a low at quality :)
i think they are very different and there is no perfect keyboard, everyone has different things they want or need, for example there are a lot of cool keyboards that doesn't have the numeric keyboard that i need, special macro keys or minor things like multimedia keys (that i actually think they are a cool and helpfull thing to have), but other things like switches, there are ligh and heavy ones, there are thin and thick ones, there are noisy and quiet switches, there is also ones that include wrist rest or bluethooth, even things like the lightsync and game effects, and well ther are non mechanical "gaming" keyboards too, but im sure that if you get one that fits what you need and want (even if its just having leds to look cool) is going to be better that a regular one

I would get any enthusiast keyboard over any gaming brand, any day.
Okay im early this time wtf
Second
There is a difference between a garbage office 5$ keyboard and a mechanical keyboard. But not as big of a difference as a good mouse and a shitty mouse!
21 yo, the reason why i like gaming keyboards is their aesthetics.
imo custom and ducky keyboards are really boring in term of looks.
Hana Song what gayming keyboard do u want? A better custom can be built, with definetly higher build quality, switch choice and stab quality.
RGB can be easily soldered in, and polycarb cases are way better then the trass rattly razers or corsairs.
P/S-Sorry Im ranting :p

I don't think a keyboard matters as much as the mouse does. I was on membrane for years in the early 2000 before finally buying an overpriced Razer keyboard in 2011
At the end of the day, real players can game on these old white logitech keyboards with the blue line ontop of it (At some point I think it was the most common keyboard to have),
and yet get almost same results to newer keyboards I would say... There is no really keyboard switch that is "meant for you", you just have to check em out and see what you like best.
In terms of gaming I don't think switches make any kind of a difference, the player is what determine if he gonna win or not. Ive recently bought a keyboard with blue switches
which im waiting for be delivered and currently using a keyboard with MX red switches... Honestly I don't believe it will make me much better at gaming, altho the overall feel
of the keyboard will be better for me.
honestly when it comes to gaming it doesn't unless you're a pro and need the fastest response time out there. typing is another story, certain switches can actually have effects on your wrist health if you type a ton
Ugh that's rough, buying a razer keyboard must've been your worst mistake

What I learned from this is many people in the comments can’t seem to understand that some people don’t want the “enthusiast” experience. We just want some cool lights with absolutely nothing to do out of the box. I got my Huntsman Elite and slapped some PBT keycaps on it and the thacking sound from the red switches that everyone seems to hate is one I actually love. I’m not dissing your enthusiast keyboards (which are your personal choice and preferences) so why you gotta diss my mass produced keyboard (my personal choice and preference)?
To be fair, the most common line you’ll hear in the enthusiast community is “It’s all preferences” so I don’t think anybody should judge you on that (unless you like clicky switches, then we can’t be friends, jk). Then again, it’s the internet
i bought my first high end keyboard recently and I agree with this video in that I am amazed by how much better keyboards have gotten in the last year or 2. Like I watched a lot of videos from gaming keyboards over the last 6 years they have really gotten a lot nicer recently
What keyboard did u end up getting?
Which one?
Even a lot of the pros use key switches that have good feel rather than performance. For instance, tfues ducky one 2 mini has brown switches. And his new 3500 dollar keyboard has cream switches. Just because you have a faster actuation point, it doesn’t really make you any better or perform better.
With out watching the video I'm going to say rattly stabs, crappy key caps and branding
Lmao exactly :D
And you find that in 98% of all pre-built mechanical keyboards. Only good pre-builts I know is the Ducky Mecha and Durgod Nebula
Coming from a razer Blackwidow elite to a 60% tofu with lubed tealios v 2s and gmk clipped and lubed stabs the difference is huge
@@jedimystic6201 what keycaps you got on that. I want the tealios, currently waiting on my holy pandas to come in
@@enzog1078 Maxkey sa foundation
Get a Keychron. Throw away your Razer. Change the switches and keycaps. Start getting into this shit. Build your own $300 boards. Waste a bunch of money on switches you end up not liking. Build another $500 board. This is fine.
are enthusiast keyboards macro? cid like to put arrow keys on h, j, k and L + FN. Is that possible? Do i need to edit the rom for that? Or maybe put Ctrl where Caps lock is too
I have a keyboard I really like, and was thinking about getting a supposedly better keyboard because it's labeled as a gaming keyboard... Thanks a lot for helping me realize I don't need to spend money on a new keyboard :)
first
I’ve been trying to find a good keyboard but I swear every review only talks about the look and sound they are all the same just different color and sizes
I got a red dragon 100% keyboard and mouse combo off of Amazon I think it was like $60 and I've been significantly better using it rather than a 2007 USB 2 sell keyboard that came with the old office pcs I'm pretty sure the order came with a rgb desk pad with a red dragon logo on it so far I would recommend
I still feel like the term “gaming switches” is a bit misleading seeing as how you can game on pretty much any switch. Sure some are better for gaming but it all comes down to preference:)
A "gaming switch" is just bad for typing :)
chrisserung lol true!
@@potion95 hello fellow xbox user one year later
@@medievaltrap7285 hello! ✌️
I tried many prebuilt keyboards. Currently I'm using a Varmilo VA88M but my favorite for gaming was Razer Blackwidow TE v2 with orange switches. The first I bought was terrible, the 2nd is awesome. Best switch for gaming for me. Typing was also satisfying on it. Keycaps and wobbling was acceptable but the switch feeling was just the best I ever tried for gaming. Unfortunately I sold it because I got mad at razer for their terrible quality control after getting other faulty products. Still regretting it. Couldn't get a better keyboard for gaming since then.
The reason I bought mechanical gaming keyboard are mainly for aesthetic and tactile typing feeling. But does it improve my gameplay? I don't think so. A good mouse is the peripheral that really improve my gameplay.
I use the old K95 with 18 G-keys specifically for CAD/CAM and other engineering applications. Having a 'block' of macro keys can be incredibly useful for view orientations and more. I am no PC gamer
I bought the steelseries apex 7 tkl because it was easy to find. And I just bought a ducky one 2 mecha mini because my countries store had a couple in stock. Keycaps on the apex aren't great but it is easy to use.
I don’t know ? Tell me
the only real problem with using non gaming keyboards for gaming is that many have pretty bad input delay and 125hz polling rate. So if you press a key and click right after, the click can get registered first so that something completely different happens from what you meant to do.
do enthusiast kb have FN keys for more combinations? Id like to use vim arrow keys on a 60% kb
and possibly ctrl where caps lock is at
Not true most custom keyboards actually have similar polling rates to gaming keyboards. It’s a common misconception and was debunked by hipyo tech when he was making those dog keyboards for some LoL player
used membrane for years just cheap stuff now I finally got a custom one feels nice and sounds nice to type on. linear switches is what I like on mine
The problem with iCUE is it crashes constantly. I loved my original K95 for years but now I dread having to relaunch the program any time I need to use it.
Is this on the latest version? Try update or roll back drivers
not for me i have icue works fine
What makes a gaming keyboard? Ugly fonts, abs keycaps, rattly stabilizers and sometimes not having a standard bottom row lol
Also...Simple asf switches, terrible build quality, rattly sounds, and overhype.

Great video, there are still some areas that aren't tailored to by the major companies the keyboard that I really want unfortunately hasn't been made yet; wireless, hotswapable full sized keyboard. And manually doing something like is doable however that wouldn't be cost or time effective unless you're a passionate enthusiast.
You can build a solid custom aluminium rgb hotswap keyboard for around $120 or $130 minimum and customise it the way you want. That's better than most of Razer and Corsair junk out there and is much more worth it! Also not very hard to put a keyboard together that has hotswap capability so there should be 0 excuses to do so. Pre-built wise the Ducky Mecha 60% and Durgod Nebula TKL are the best imo and under $120
Thats just wrong, a keyboard isnt like a computer that can really take advantage of switching parts here and there for better preformance, corsair and razer can make pretty good keyboards and should definitely be a reccomender for people who dont wanna go through the pain of getting all the individual parts and assembling them. So really if its good you should buy it
@@suck4599 Corsair and Razer keyboards are overpriced for what they are. Ducky and Durgod keyboards are better pre-builts and give you more options of size and are cheaper by far. Personally I will always buy a hotswap board because if there's any issue with a switch or stablilizer I can easily fix it, My last corsair keyboard the stabilizer popped out and I had to discard the keyboard. There's no "pain" in plugging in switches and putting key caps on and if anyone wanted to buy parts together then Glorious site has it all. You can build a hotswap keyboard on their website for $120 including everything
Your forget steelseries 7g and 6gv2?
i got ducky sf it met everything i wanted
