      @interstellar0001 4 года назад +26

@@Kingodthejungle That is actually a good question. When I started the class, I thought about that myself. But apparently, it is because it is what constituted the basis for the western civilizations we know today like Western Europe and North America. Here's what I got online:
"Western culture was influenced by many older civilizations of the ancient Near East, such as Phoenicia, Ancient Israel, Minoan Crete, Sumer, Babylonia, and also Ancient Egypt. It originated in the Mediterranean basin and its vicinity; Ancient Greece and Rome are often cited as its birthplaces."
I.e. I learn about the birth of how Europe and the Americas came to be, and it is traced back to ancient times in places like Athens. It is not exactly considered a western civilization today, but it greatly influenced the western world's upbringings.

Western civilisation is not well defined. Where Native Americans part of western civilization?
Western civilisation is supposed to mean Western European civilization from the 1500s to today.
Athenian political thought was the beginning, the roots, of modern European political thought and philosophy. That's where it was born. However ancient greeks lacked many other elements which are part of modern western civilization. This is normal. However it may disqualify Ancient Greece as part of western civilization.
Instead one may argue western civilization started with the Romans. Or with the fall of the Roman Empire. Or with the reniassance. Even with the enlightmenet.
At the end of the day, is there even one united western civilization?

1- Don't miss out on the beaches. We took a 30-45 min. tram ride to Alimos and the beach was terrific.

They're real soldiers and while filming the changing of the guard is ok on the Syntagma square, it is NOT ok to film them as they enter their HQ at the back of the building. We found that out while wandering around :) (dumb tourists, turn that off!)

My hair was standing on end it really was. It's even better when you learn how they actually built this absolute masterpiece. It's total genius to say the least. Even though I am a patriotic man and served 11 years in the army to do my bit, I left my heart in Athens and it will remain there. I love Greece so much I can't even explain in words. Congrats on your video my friend thanks for promoting our city. Just a heads-up about the bargaining from the point of view of an employee, indeed most of the shops overprice the merchandise but there are a lot of shops that don't. So when tourists walk up to the store and insist so much for extra discount its really frustrating for the employee that is not the owner. So my advice is first compare the prices from different stores and different regions (e.x plaka is way more expensive than monastiraki) and then bargain but be polite about it, don't do it all high and mighty. And please guys dont bargain for trivial things like magnets they cost like one euro while in other cities like Amsterdam they cost 5 euros. Hope you all visit, its worth it, cheers.

1)In Acropolis, wear stable shoes. It's really slippery.
    2) Don't just stay downtown. Go to the suburbs. They are really nice! Some examples are Chalandri, Agia Paraskevi, Glyfada and Kifissia.
    3) use the subway. It' really fast. And buses are reliable, but they are coming every 40 minutes and, most of the times, they are really crowded.

  • @singlaki

I cannot stress enough how you need to be careful of pickpockets on the public transportation. Sometimes they can act as a group ,one keeps your attention occupied while the other tries to steal from you.
A bottle of 0,5ltr of water costs 0,5€ in kiosks and cornerstores but if you buy them from a supermarket they could cost between 0,15-0,40€ . Never accept to pay more. If you have a reusable bottle you could definatly use it with tap water.
Coffee places like Starbucks and Coffee Island (both having locations in the center of Athens)will give you a glass of water for free without being a customer, just ask nicely.
Also sit down cafés usually bring you free tap water either a whole jug or a glass (free refill when asked) with any order.
We definitely don't plan to leave anyone thirsty 😁

Also if you want to see a less touristy but hip place that's not too far from the main parts, hike up Lycabettus hill. There's a fenicular if you don't feel like hiking it, but you get a nice panoramic view of the Athens basin from there, plus a restaurant and cafe if you want to enjoy the views more. Great for sunsets too.

What tourists don't do when they come to Athens, is to explore some of the greater suburban area. There are many things to see and do and be a bit more involved with the way locals live. Possibly find some very nice places to eat, some of the biggest shopping malls, great beatches to swim, some small luxury shops, local theaters and museums, street artists and many more. I know, five days or a week of staying isn't enough time to see it all, but in a slow day, taking the Electric Railway to Pireus or Kifisia and discover both its ends will surely reward you.

I have to admit you are quite informed about our country and judging from the rest of your videos you've visited a lot of places in Greece!
If you ever come back and want a change of scenery and historic content, make sure you visit the region of Epirus in the northern part of the country. The region is historically rich concerning the Ottoman occupation and a lot of sites played a key role during the early stages of the second world war and the invasion by the Italian forces. If you find yourself in Epirus make sure you spend at least a week in the area of Zagori. The scenery and small villages are truly magical!

I agree with this but it is best to visit Parthenon in the late afternoon where many of the cruise ship tourists have disappeared - it is crowded in the morning. Many main tourist sites are at walkable distance anyway

I am from Greece and I must say i agree with everything you stated in this video! The only thing I want to mention is for anyone visiting Greece during the spring/summer time, please wear sunscreen whenever you head outdoors and don't sit under the sun for long hours (especially from 1pm-4pm). Do make sure you have skincare products with you that can treat sunburns just in case!

    Great list!
Personally I find the tap water here to be perfectly fine and most people drink that at home and it is healthy. I think it might be a question of taste, I personally can't stand tap water in NYC for example.
Also they recently built a non-slip pathway on top of the Acropolis which helps prevent those nasty falls (I believe the climb up and the areas outside the pathway are still as they were before though), as well as a new elevator for those with mobility issues.

Thanks for the heads up on the non slip ground. That was death defying sometimes

Meh, tap water in Athens is not amazing, but it's okay to drink I guess. Something pretty similar happens with coastal Spanish cities, the quality of the water in Mediterranean areas is not the best

Really Hoping the Cruise we have in June 2021 from Athens does not cancel. We are staying at the St George Lycabettus Hotel that has a view of the Acropolis.

@@cholizgz9999 tap water in Athens is not of the best quality most of the other greek cities though have quite good tap water, especially in northern Greece , well in general if you can find a fountain definitely have some.

So agree with not driving in Athens central. Public transport is so easy )despite the language differences) and even walking is not such a schlepp as you find many interesting things around the most unexpected corners. Our hotel overlooked one of the main roads from Omonia square to Piraeus and I watched every day in amazement at how they avoided accidents despite the crazy driving!

Recommend the Temple of Poseidon. It's about 2 hours outside Athens. Is much less busy than Parthenon.
Can combine with a day at the beach))
