MP was part of DT's soul. He is some kind of pure drummer like Phil Collins. More musical (and more entertaining) than technical - but nonetheless technical. You know what I mean? Sorry for my English and I hope I made my point clear, the difference between MP and MM now. greetings from Germany!
Saw them live more than a decade ago in london. Glad to witness Portnoy drum skills! Petrucci Rudess and Myung talent beyond! This is the Beethoven of 20th Century!
C'mon guys, let's just stop the eternal debate about which kind of guitarist is better? The Lil' Wayne's or the John Petrucci's? They both have their own unique styles and are just as good in their own... yeah :|
Mahavishnu orchestra, but you might be right,Myung is defintwely better then the mhavishnu orchestra bass player, and petrucci is cleanr then mcluaghlin, but drummers are bare minimum equal, and violin player for mahavishnu is a total freak, both are absolute masters though regardless if one likes them"musiclly/style wise" or not.I would say Billy cobham is better drummer overall then Portnoy, though at that elite level theres little to argue over there all freaks lol.
I love the concentrated look of DT when performing live, no extra flashy bullshit, it show's their focus on producing their sound, which is incredible!
Personally I don't mind "flashy bullshit" considering they're providing a show for the viewers. But I don't expect everyone to give a show because songs very in difficulty. This song probably takes all of their focus for how technical it is.
@@Legnica148I remember this period well. He really was peaking on several levels during this tour and around this time. Check out the Toronto 2004 vids. In the name of god ending solo. Lie solo live. All impeccable, and better than on the album. I think Octavarium (the song, mostly) really brought it all together. That ending solo and entire section is among the most beautiful things they have ever written. Then they stopped renewing themselves imo, and it all became quite repetitive. No wonder Portnoy wanted them to take a break around that time...
Watching this in 2020 for the millionth time. My God, such beautiful chemistry they had. It never tires neither gets old. This is Dream Theater for me.
Every time I listen to this song I imagine someone went back in time and gave a mission assignment to a classical composer, and said, "Here's the instruments they use in the future. Write something for them" and then this random classical composer sends this back.
For Live DVDs, they get overdubbed and produced before they are released. That's why it sounds like the studio. I would love to hear what it actually sounded like live.
This tour/album was the Pinnacle of the old Dream Theater from I&W onwards. With the following album they became a different band IMO. Many people like different phases of DT. This for me was the absolute best phase for them. Pure musicianship and zero gimmicks.
I'm a man who has basic knowledge of music, so I encourage anyone to correct me if I'm wrong here, but I love how this song gives moments for each member to shine. Petrucci of course is a God in his own right, Myung lays down the lower melody keeping things rolling, Ruddess just effortlessly goes off on appagios like they're easy to do, and then Portnoy provides not only a beat but also a harmony/counter melody in his percussion. And it's easy listening when each thought flows into each other and hearing how each movement slowly morphs into another. This song just helps me relax and allows me to close my eyes and go into my happy place.
The best of Dream theater in one song, magic flow and drum patterns switch, beautiful solo ad Bridge, great melody and a lot of joy coming from all of the band. MASTERPIECE ❤️
I envy the feelings of the band members at the end of the song. They first looked at each other with the smile of success on their faces, then looked at the audience to see the satisfaction on their faces.
10:10 oh my holy fucking god this is it, the outro!!! when the consciousness is streaming massively. They must have been missing the moment when they lookad at each other and realized how amazing they were, and such a wondurful music they have played. Im getting in tears but we've got to move on.
There is not a single band on the planet that is so technically tuned as Dream Theater in their prime. Just look at this performance - sheer perfect execution to one of the toughest songs to pull off.
Ahh I remember this concert was my first intro to dream theater and I was hooked. Back in the days of RUclips when you could find the whole thing uploaded.
I was waiting, thank u my friend!! Flawless, pinnacle technical ability aside….the quality of sound and mix of the four instruments is among best I’ve personally ever heard! Great ear sir!
I feel super happy 😄🤪🥳 listening to the old Dream Theater... and listening to Stream of Consciousness... oh God... It is kind of another dimension 🤯. No words can describe such a feeling. Maybe blessed, but for sure... I dont know.
Speechless...just totally speechless...11min DTorgasm...wtf I have been listening to for the past 42 years that I discovered DT only now:)) that's true shame on me:)
This concert is definitely the peak of fashion for every member of the band.
Hahaha
Jajajaja what a badass but true comment. Love it.
Lol agreed, except maybe Labrie. Always been a dapper motherfucker, love how he dressed in the early 90's
so true man
Portnoy was the heart of Dream Theater.
Also I like it more when Myung played on the Yamaha.
Aaaa Portnoy, I miss you so much. Your drum sound is unique.
yeah man same i miss portnoy to
Portnoy's drums always sound unique, his musicality overshadows his technical skills, which are by themselves astonishing.
I agreee

Simple the true...
3:55 when John puts his leg like that, you know something crazy shit is gonna happen
Some of the best camera work I have ever seen in a concert.
DutchPs3Gamers The best I think is the metallica seattle 89 live
No like festival de viña del mar ....chile ....vomit....😤
DutchPs3Gamers actually Portnoy produced it later... Because each instrument had a camera cover...
Mike portnoy was the director for video for the budokan concert.
It's the Budokon, that's why.
4:14 That sweep was so good all my floors are clean
It's impossible to copy this frase, years and years of study kkkk
even selling your soul won't do. trust me, i've tried it
It is even more amazing that the timing in this song is faster/slightly faster than the studio version...and he still eats that sweep alive
Greatest comment i read in my life
Suk Dufai Petrucci used sweep... It's very effective...
Another Epic Classic of LaBrie´s vocal!
Good point. They do better without him
What's your fuckin' problem with him?
Haha hahahahaha you made my day... Hahahaha
Haha hahahahaha you made my day... Hahahaha
HAHAHA
Myung's bass has such a solid thick sound in this concert
Yeah man, too often the bassist is drowned out, but it's really distinct in this 👌🏼
@@HammerBlow500 Steve harriss sound always cuts through in live concerts he is the soul of iron maiden
because there isnt a second guitarist and they are playing with a good volume balance.
I would pay a stupid amount of money to watch these 4 guys play instrumentals for a couple hours!
Specially if they promise labrie is not going to sing
How stupid are we talking? I can make a few calls

what you are watching right here, ladies and gentlemen, is the best instrumental players of all time
+Ion Tudor Bernaz You've never seen Lil Wayne then? :D
Ion Tudor Bernaz Yeah, Petrucci can shred, but he doesn't have the feel of Lil Wayne. He makes those two notes sound more than 10000.

Shane McCoy agreed. Would prefer this love of perfection and accuracy over flashy bullshit any day
Some people hate DT because of that I dont get it
It's because of the audience. They are just standing there hearing and looking 👀
@@LuthienRF are you expecting people to mosh or headbang to dream theater? i have tried it, its hard .

6:31 I can't stop watching that fill
It's awesome Mike Portnoy The Kraken!!!!
The fact that Portnoy is rushing makes the solo at 4:01 even more impressive. Probably the some of the fastest and most accurate JP has ever played.
It's fucking crazy how clean he played this, live, at this tempo. Peak Petrucci for sure.

John Myung outdoes himself...
The lyrics for the song are so much better than The Dance of Eternity!
But nothing compared to LaBrie's vocal performance!!
But Overture 1928 lyrics beat all
What about erotomania the lyrics are mind blowing

Couldn’t agree more! A perfect live mix!
