    Things to never cheap out on:
    1. Motorcycle helmet
    2. Safety Glasses
    3. Bullet Proof Glass
    4. Anal Lubricant

      @@ReySChaseythinking like that is why there were so many bad expensive helmets in the the past.
      They do the tests or they dont. Alot of past expensive helmets were bad. Some cheap helmets are fine. It does not ake too much thought to realize a 400 dollar price tag does not keep a manufacture from making garbage. We are talking about helmets designed to break on impact. You could take a normal helmet and cover it with pool noodles and it might out perform most helmets with the extra cushion.
      It was silly slogans and badly designed expensive helmet and a few good outliers.
      All to say the 10 dollar helmet for a 10 dollar head campaign made many 10 dollar helmets cost alot more than 10 dollars. The cheap helmets eventually got better and many expensive helmets stagnated or were never good to begin with.

    When I heard you were testing a cheap vs expensive helmet I was sorta hoping you were going to use a $100 helmet vs a $600. See if the premium price is really worth it for safety. I think I already know the answer but it would be cool to see.

    • @Pr3st0ne
      @Pr3st0ne 7 лет назад +331

      Yeah, I want to know about a low-range helmet you would find in a shop, not some sketchy scam helmet nobody would consider safe.
      Everybody always tells me how a helmet is the one thing you shouldn't cheap out on, but when I ask, everyone tells me a 400$ helmet isn't really safer, it just has more features.

      Very true.
      There is also the fact that an expensive, comfortable helmet with great noise reduction/comfy padding/waterproofing etc. reduces rider fatigue and a tired rider is a less safe rider.

    • @FortNine
      @FortNine  7 лет назад +489

      That's a good idea! To be honest, I don't think we'd see an appreciable difference. Of course it depends on the models we choose, but I know a couple $100 helmets that scored 4/5 or 5/5 on SHARP safety ratings. Similarly, I know some $600+ helmets that scored 3/5 or less. The safety/price relationship gets really random above $150ish. You're paying for less weight and more features past that point. ~RF9

      A lot of what you get at that upper level is "nice to haves." They are typically lighter and fit better. More sound proofing. Better venting.
      And Snell helmets seem to cost more. I guess that's because Snell actually tests, whereas DOT appears to be simply a standard.

      Arturs Lejins even if he would’ve hit the $300 helmets visor, it might’ve detatched, but would NEVER shatter. The cheap visor shattered and is very brittle, hence why the gun left such a big hole. More expensive visors don’t shatter. Just a note ........... DOT does not mean its been tested. Its a design certification and there is no guarantee that Chinese made DOT helmet was manufactured in accordance (same for US or European manufacture) but I would trust US or Euro manufacturers more. At $30 (or slightly more) you get what you pay for and that's probably "cut corners" in quality

    This is a knockoff helmet, not a cheap helmet, genuine cheap helmets will be safe, up to standard, expensive helmets will be better than the standard they need to reach, probably. This was sold to you in China no doubt (not all Chinese items are poor quality/knockoffs), a cheap helmet bought in the US if laws are similar to the UK, will still be subject to the same testing as expensive helmets and need to meet a minimum standard in order to legally be sold.

    • @magicoddeffect
      @magicoddeffect 5 лет назад +1

      He also did a video on how utterly crap the US DOT standards are...helmets sold in the US, even with that "certification", are not exactly guaranteed to be safe.
      DOT standards let manufacturers self-report their test results. With no internal oversight.
      Yes, really.
