  • Dillon Gabriel was 18/21 passing with no interceptions (1 fumble) on Saturday in another sloppy win against Boise State. The Oregon quarterback does not need to be replaced--but he does need to be better.
    On today's episode of Locked On Ducks, Spencer answers some of the most pressing questions from Oregon fans. How fixable are Oregon's issues that reared their head on Saturday? 10:50
    Spencer ends the show talking about the many positives that were, believe it or not, on display on Saturday night. Positive steps have to continue to be taken to get a convincing win over Oregon State this week in Corvallis. 23:07

    In the absence of answers from the coaching staff we're forced to make a narrative based on what we do know to explain the poor execution. Judging by watching the games live, looking at film after the games and the PFF grades it is absolutely clear that the biggest problem right now is the O-line. The line WAS able to execute at a high level in the bowl game without JPJ so his loss can't be the entire explanation.
    A major change that the staff introduced in the Spring and Fall camp was to split the starters onto two practice fields to get more even reps to build depth with the backups. That decision was driven by the playoff format that will absolutely reward the teams that can replace injured starters with minimal drop-off. Most positions in football are about 80% individual performance and 20% team effort but O-line play is the opposite. I think the decision to divide the O-line starters was a mistake and we are seeing a talented O-line that can't sync with itself or their QB. Additionally those O-line starters had divided attention from the coaching staff so hard to notice details that have a huge impact in games were getting missed.
    Unfortunately it's going to take time for the O-line to get it together and that task is made harder by the stress of poor play AND the start of classes where the NCAA limits how much time the players can have with coaches. A final point here is that Dan has never been successful at eliminating non-essential penalties but the high level play has masked that problem in all but the biggest games.
    The idea of splitting up the O-line and constantly rotating positions was identified by Adrian Klemm in a 2022 media interview as a bad idea but one he was overruled on by Dan. I think this is unfortunately a learning moment for Dan where he discovers a detail about offenses that he might have never understood as a defensive coach and therefore couldn't adequately account for in the plan. I would think Stein would have a better appreciation for cohesive line play but then again perhaps not. Terry is a young coach and I think maybe he understands it but wasn't able to get the decision reversed or the experience needed to creatively work through the challenge of building cohesion without consistent play time as a unit.
    This is all conjecture on my part formed from what little I do know so I absolutely could be wrong. I would love to see Geoff Schwartz or another qualified O-line expert do some film breakdown here and explain in detail exactly what we are seeing. I have definitely recalibrated my expectations for the season and now my enjoyment of the games is tied to seeing development and progress of their play. They played better as a team against Boise and I hope to see another step taken against OSU before the bye. I really don't see how they can button all this up before the Ohio St. game and Chip DOES know what he's looking at so we may get blasted at home in front of the national spotlight giving rocket fuel to Oregon haters for years to come.

    DG isn’t playing bad. He’s been a bright spot honestly. Not perfect but no QB is, not even on Bo Nix level but he was the most accurate qb ever so… I think us Oregon fans got a bit spoiled last year with the perfection of Bo.

      lol bo threw 91% of his passes 6 yards or fewer. He’s not an accurate thrower he literally didn’t have to throw past the line of scrimmage, my nephew can do that it’s not hard . Why do you think he missed 70% of his throws on Sunday ? Because you can’t play behind the line of scrimmage in the nfl it’s way to fast and he would have gotten picked off none stop …oh wait they did try that ..he did get picked off twice and they decided he was going to be a run first quarterback like a peewee football team

    I grow weary of the showboating and individual celebrations bordering on taunting. It almost cost us this game and I believe it will cost the Ducks in the future if it continues. Reminds me of past teams with blue chip talent that failed to remain humble and focus on team and not themselves individually and elaborate touchdown dances. It's disrespectful to focus on one individual's performance vs the teams.

    Oregon State fan and alum here. I am biased but I still see Oregon winning this Saturday. As soon as Oregon State released their schedule many months ago, I predicted their only loss being to Oregon. That predictions still stands. I believe they beat everyone on their regular season schedule, except for Oregon. That includes Washington State, Cal, Purdue, and last but not least, Boise State. I also do believe that an 11-1 season for Oregon State lands them in spot in the 12-team CFB playoffs. My prediction for the game is Oregon winning 28-21. I’ll be in Corvallis for the game

    I'm most concerned about the coaching. Stein's play calling, particularly with how he tries to incorporate TEs, is bewildering and pedestrian. Terry is worrisome. And it all rolls up to Lanning- particularly the lack of discipline in his team, and how he seems okay with it. Surprisingly Lupoi has been solid as DC, and great as always at recruiting.

    Thought DG was really good through 3 quarters. On time, accurate throws, and was clearly a lot less gun shy. He took a bad sack early in the game, but the other 3 were not his fault. The fumble wasn’t really his fault either, the oline just consistently let him down play after play. He was not good in the 4th and seemed a little nervous again, those two missed throws were brutal. Overall a pretty polarizing game from him, but generally he looked way better

    O-Line problems of this magnitude do not seem to be happening at other "Top Ten" teams. So what is it? Oregon recruted players that peaked in highschool and are not able to compete at a higher level OR do we have a O-Line coaching problem? It's not comfortable to have to ask these questions but the answers could be the reason that Oregon Offensive Line is sub par.

      I think that you may be on to something. I was first team Center for two years at a high school that had 4,200 students. I was on an All-Star team and won plenty of awards. When I got to the university level of football, players were bigger, stronger, quicker, faster and had equal to or better skills than me. I had to work extremely hard in order to compete, get better and be able to play on Saturdays. I saw plenty of players that were great in high school not be able to do what was necessary to compete at a higher level or the skills that helped them succeed in high school didn't translate to a higher level of competition. Some of what you talk about may be happening in the case of Oregon's O-Line.

    Nick Saban put in the QB that played the best , if one was struggling he changed them out at halftime , and were talking about future NFL QB's . Gabriel has the best receivers in college football, he has bad pocket presence, he is two out of eight on passes over 30 yards , he is to short . If he is not willing to run then Give Donte Moore a shot. At least for one half . Competition breeds good play .

    • @PThorpe11
      @PThorpe11 8 дней назад

      The problem is the culture that Saban built is different than the one that Dan has built. I hate to say it, but Saban's players always responded well to being yelled at or being benched. I don't know if I can say the same for Dan's team, as I'm just not sold on if these players are as mentally tough as Saban's players. In short, what I'm saying is, benching Gabriel could kill his confidence and if Dante comes in and doesn't play well, it could kill his confidence too. It's a fine line to tread.

    Not sure why the coaches don’t do more play action and get Gabriel out of the pocket more. Seems like something to start trying. Give him the dual threat option and get him comfortable. That pocket collapsing is getting old. Ya he’s short but that isn’t the problem when you have stunts and edge rushers constantly in your face because the o line can’t figure it out

  • @cruzkoward5093
    @cruzkoward5093 8 дней назад +1

    I was at the game and I feel like the biggest issue is playing clean football! 75 penalty yards and two turnovers is insane. Poncho is obviously the starter at C. This why playing clean is the biggest issue. The 3rd qtr Boise State had 1 first down and then after Shout the stadium was electric and we were driving down field to put away the game then Herbert fumbled on a bubble screen! Jeanty breaks loose next play after that crazy momentum swing! Then pickard snaps the ball early leading to a Gabriel fumble. The mood in the stadium before Herbert fumbled was that the game was about to be put away but we just shot ourselves in the foot. That’s the biggest issue. The defense played quite well and James would’ve had more yards had we not have the dumb penalties we had, the numbers don’t show the full story. Felt like the Texas tech game but I walked away from that game feeling okay bc this all fixable and can be fixed quickly. The only main concern I have is if Lanning isn’t set on having poncho play center full time because the offense played significantly better with him at the helm. Everything else is silly mistakes like last year which we also corrected then we went on a roll. I have the confidence that we’ll put it all together!

    DG had a perfect long pass to Stewart at the start of the game for a Td. He missed the one to Holden pretty bad in the 4th, but the one he missed to Stewart in the 4th was right off of his finger tips. Almost look like Stewart coulda dove to catch it, laid out for it so to speak. But long bombs aren’t high percentage plays, so that’s why it’s weird that half the fan base wants to throw deep balls all game long. The O-line & DG needs to settle in and get on the same page, get this damn run game going. It’ll open up more shots down the field, but it’s gotta start with the run game. We need to be more physical, the play calling needs to be called that way as well. I think Jonathan Stewart & Kenyon Barner summed it up the best on their Friday podcast, “the o-line has to put their nutz up on the table”… 😂😂

    Dillon Gabriel absolutely is not the issue. I think at the end of this weeks game, we finally found the O Line combo we are going to stick with. They put Poncho in at center and we were able to start moving the ball on the ground again. If we clean up the O line play, and maybe get some better playcalling on offense and clean up the penalties I think we will be good. The Defense is a serious bright spot for this team. Playing really well especially in the secondary. really impressed with the secondary this year.

    Regarding Herbert's fumble - it's hard to fault that because that was a text-book tackle made by the BS defender: helmet on the ball at full speed coming in. A lot of TE's lose that ball, not just Patrick. Regarding Gabriel's fumble, after the bad snap he did try to make the 1st down (and looks like he did) but never got full control of the ball before running forward. That was a mistake because it was 2nd down, not 3rd. The 2nd fumble was worse than the 1st even tho the 1st resulted in an immediate score by BS.

I kinda feel as if he was talking about DG, and how his long ball is wild, and it a very low percentage pass for DG. Also when he does get long passes, its alot of slant routes that go to the house. Another thing, when Oregon was backed up deep in their own side. They ran it on 3rd & 16. Why was this? They had just been stopped 2 prior plays. Also, this thing about DG not playing like he should because its his first year, is a scape goat reason. Anyone who says this is saying Will Stein's offence is so difficult that any first year QB aint going to be that good. That isn't it. The truth is, Bo Nix sat down with Dan & Will and told them he does better when he is able to change the play on his own discretion. They don't trust DG to do that. Also, Bo was able to gett the ball out quickly with accuracy. The last thing i want to say is even with oklahoma going into the SEC and having one of the tuffèst schedules in the nation, they chose to go with an unproven red shirt freshman who through 5 interceptions in bowl game, over Dylan Gabriel. Why? I was asking myself his when i heard Dylan tell the story of being called into coaches office to be told he should enter the portal cause they were going with Jackson. When i watched DG in spring game, i came out of that game thinking DG wasn't that good, but i chalked it up to this being him getting familiar with his wr and playbook. You look at his game now, and its exactly the same as it was in spring. You can say what u want, but i speak a lot of truth.

      So 41 for 49 and 18 for 21 isn't good enough for you. I could see if it was the intangibles like picking up blitzes or moving in the pocket but his throws and QB play is fine. It's not awesome, but good enough to win. Pick something else than DG because there are way more things performing less than fine, then circle back on this.

      @jimsomerville3924 ok, I'm saying I hear you. So he needed to go 21 for 21 over 300 yards for him to be ok in your eyes. Or hit those two but not others. Some QBs excel in "the moment," and some don't. Hell, Bo didn't when it mattered. He couldn't do it. All I'm saying is what if he is who he is, a 18 for 21 QB who will miss a pass or two. I think you want him to be who he is showing you he isn't. But you don't want to accept who he is, and who he is, is someone this team should win a lot of games with. How about this alone. Show me a QB in the top 10 that had better completion percent, who had more touchdowns, and more yards all in one. I'm genuinely curious of your response.

    I just amazed that no one is giving Idaho and Boise State any credit. They are both good football teams and will probably bode end up leading their conference. Oregon State is also no pushover. If we are looking for someone to blame let's talk about the Offensive Coordinator. Split the back out wide, put the tight end in the pattern, leave five down linemen to block six rushers on a safety blitz and not expect a sack? And then do the same thing three or four more times without a change and expect a different result?

    Boise fan here. What I see is a qb with talent as long as he stays in the box. Also someone in the coaching staff at OR needs to be let go. After your week one scare it was all about how the coaching staff will turn this around and smash Boise state. Boise was able to make the necessary changes from week one to almost get an upset at OR. I didn’t see much of a change with OR this week. Boise let Georgia Southern score 45 point on them last week but was able to hold OR offense to just 23 points. As a top 10 team that shouldn’t happen. Either Boise is way better than they are given credit for or OR is very much screwed this season.

    I am leaning a little towards the play-calling being too conservative at times and too cute at others (the Ferguson play was a good example of that). Once the offensive line plays a clean game we’ll find out if the play calling is as bad as it has looked at times.
    We have thoroughbreds throughout, as long as the line does their job we should be making the defense scared shitless of the long ball.

    I agree, DG can play better. We are comparing him to BN and he is in his first year and I also agree he may not be able to read where the pressure is coming from. Typically it is the center’s job to help him and he is not getting much help from the OL. DL said they are mixing and matching players on the OL and going to the film to see who can be the 5, 6 or 7 guys in the rotation. Back to DG, his completion percentage is 85%, yes he did over throw open receivers, he is accurate! So when the protection improves I’m confident he will hit the receivers! The D is good, need to be more consistent, I’m cautiously optimistic, we need to play better if we want to meet the expectations and goals this team has. The big issue is the OL, it will be difficult to develop a National Championship OL in season.

    Dillion is part of the problem. While he is talented I will explain why. Look back at last years Bo highlights and you will see Bo was under pressure but he knew how to rotate the O line block to pick up blitz. Plus Bo could step up in the pocket and make the throws. Dillion is too short to step up and make the throws. The other issue is he is left handed. Thus the strong side of the offense flips from last year with a right handed Bo. This all the blocking is opposite. In addition and maybe the bigger issue is the O line foot work to protect the Left handed QB. You have the same Right and Left tackles who are struggling with foot work to support the LH QB and flipping of the strong side of the formation. Everyone is missing how big of an issue this is. OLine can’t adjust in 3 months

Will he get better? Sure, but the way to compensate for a bad o-line is a dual-threat QB, you know, like Moga. I'm not saying replace DG right now, but give Moga some time in the game. I only need to read the title to know I don't agree with your assessment. Dillon Gabriel is talented for sure, but right now he is one of the problems, and if he can come in sync with the rest of the offense that will be the biggest improvement we can see in the short term. Communication between the O-Line & QB is lacking. Understanding & cohesion take actual game time to happen. I believe he is experienced enough to know how to accomplish that, but that weakness is giving the opponent confidence, and belief in their victory. They already have the motivation, Oregon State could be another tough one. The transfer portal players take time to fit, and QB is the hardest. DG does not have command of the offense yet. The defenses smell that, and that can make a weak defense formidable.
