Chopin - Nocturne in F minor, Op.55 No.1 - (Kawai RX-2 Piano)

  • This piece is the first of a set of two late nocturnes, published in 1844, only 5 years before Chopin’s death. I think this is a perfect example of the nocturne genre, being a somewhat sad, dark, melancholic piece, but with utmost beauty and lyricism.
    The structure is ABA’, but the ending A’ feels like a coda, with fast passages and a modulation to F major. The A section starts with a simple slow melody, that is repeated with some variations, and then it progresses to a contrasting B section that I perceive as an agitato (even though that is not written in the score). The main melody comes back once again, but then it changes into an accelerating cadenza that finishes off with a modulation in F Major. To me, that ending is a coda and it is really fun to play, but it was rather confusing and challenging to learn.
    I’ve been playing this piece since the beginning of the year, never feeling quite confident to do a recording. It is surprisingly difficult to play the slow A section well, with the proper phrasing of the melody and maintaining that slow, dolce, and sad character. I struggled with that a lot. Also, the left hand was challenging, to connect the pairs of bass and chords requires special phrasing in that hand as well. The middle section is just weird to play, with a very stretchy left hand and unusual harmonies. Then, the coda, the first part of it, doesn’t have a clear pattern and it was hard to memorize, but once it was in my muscle memory it wasn’t so hard to play on tempo. The final accelerating F major arpeggios are difficult because of the dynamics, having a crescendo followed by a diminuendo to pianissimo during a stretto.
    I worked on this piece for a long time and only now I have started to feel that I could give a somewhat convincing performance. I waited to make this recording right after my piano was tuned and voiced, so apart from my limitations as an amateur pianist, the sound was as good as it can be. I was surprised that my first take was really good, but then I recorded another two that were also good. None of the three takes were perfect, but each one was good in its own way. I couldn’t decide which one to use, so I just combined the best parts of each one into this recording. This was not really to mask my mistakes, as I could share any one of the three takes. I just wanted to share my best recording, and in this way, I think I can accomplish that.
    Anyway, this doesn't happen often, but I was pretty happy about this recording. I feel that this is really the best performance of this piece that I am able to do at this moment. I am also glad I can move on and start learning another piece. I might go for another nocturne.
    As always, I am happy to hear your thoughts and impressions about my performance in the comments, and feel free to ask me any questions. Also, let me know what is your favorite nocturne (mine is Op.27 No.1).
    Thank you!

    I’ll admit I rarely leave comments, but I had to come in and say that I just randomly stumbled upon your channel and this is the video that I first came across. I absolutely love Chopin as he’s easily my no.1 favorite composer. The way you played this nocturne is so mesmerizing and tells such a wonderful story. You’ve certainly inspired me to put this piece on my “to learn” list- I just recently got back into playing the piano after having not consistently played for many years due to college, but since I’ve graduated recently I have more free time to play again. Again, wonderful wonderful job; I hope I’ll be able to play this piece with as much feeling as you do !🤍🖤

      Thank you so much, Marissa! I am really happy that my performance was somehow inspirational to you. Four years ago I was in a similar situation, coming back to the piano after a very long break. I am so glad I decided to have the piano back in my life. I also love Chopin and his nocturnes in particular. I want to play all of them, eventually, and this nocturne seemed like a good pick at this point. But I must say that as I worked on it I discovered a lot of details and nuances that made this piece quite challenging. It took me several months to feel comfortable to record it, but then it was an absolute pleasure to play. I hope you get to enjoy learning and playing it even more than I did. If you get to record and share it, please let me know. I would love to hear it :)

    You play very well and your piano sounds great, Felipe! I just started to learn this piece (LH only), maybe a bit too soon as I have only been playing 2-3 years (I practice 2 hr/day) but I'll give it a try..

      Thank you very much! I really love this nocturne and I made an extra effort on it. Shaping the phrasing in the left-hand is key for making it sound good. The feedback from my teacher on that was very important.
      Good luck. I hope you have fun playing it 🙂

    Thank you for recording this beautiful piece, after listening to your recording I am on the lookout for an rx 2. For recording what is your setup

    • @FelipeCostaPiano
      @FelipeCostaPiano  2 года назад +1

      Thanks for your comment! The RX-2 is a really nice instrument, but it has been replaced by the GX line. I was lucky to find this old one, which is in excellent condition. I hope you find a nice one too.
      About my recording setup, I just use a pair of small capsule condenser mics (AKG P180), connected through an audio interface (Scarlett Focusrite 2i2). I don't know how to do post-recording mastering or mixing, so what you hear is the raw audio with just a little bit of reverb.

      @@FelipeCostaPianoThanks for the details on your setup. I think the raw audio sounds pretty good to me, I will look for the same setup on Amazon.

      @@shubray no problem. Actually, the microphones are AKG P170, not P180. They are not the best microphones for piano, but I was able to get them for a nice price and I have also used them to record other instruments (guitar, bass and drums) with good results.
