The Swing-Wing is hands-down - and heads-up - the weirdest toy ever put on the American market. Still, for perspective, at the 1988 Olympic opening ceremony a troupe of Korean dancers swung just a headgear in time and unison. They were part of the cultural show.

The Polaroid Swinger ad featured a young Ali McGraw, and the theme song was sung by Barry Manilow. It was created by the famous agency Doyle Dane Bernbach, and shows up on most industry lists of the greatest ad campaigns of all time. They also created the "Think Small" ads for Volkswagen. The camera was also revolutionary in many ways. It was the first Polaroid with a molded plastic body (instead of the folding bellows design), and it had an amazingly modern user interface. Young people don't remember a time when you couldn't take pictures and view them instantly, but Polaroids were the only cameras in those days that could do that. They're called "Land cameras" after Edwin Land, founder of Polaroid, who created the chemistry, after his young daughter asked him why pictures he'd taken during a walk together would take so long before she could see them.
