Have had this camera for 5 years and used it to make some videos, but believe it or not, I only cracked open the manual today because I was trying to understand the HDMI output and the audio/visual/digital output. I'm here because it's about time I actually start understanding the camera. Great sense of humour by the way!
Excellent! Migrating from the dark-ages of the Canon G2 to this Canon EOS M2 - I find this marvelous! Well presented, clear, concise, very good and appropriate images.
I just bought used canon eos m to replace my canon legria hf r606 and this video is just perfect to get the settings right. Thanks for an amazing tutorial.
I just bought this camera.. I was wondering if you are wandering around... what's the best setting for moving subjects (in terms of video). Thanks, learning a lot.
Hi ⚠️I have a question: I have a CANON EOS "M" and was looking for a wireless ttl / hss studio flash (not speedlight). I have seen the Visico 5 with trigger 818 TX or a Neewer vision 5 (which are practically the same). Can you tell me if it is compatible) or what should I look at in order to know what it should or should not have for compatibility? Thanks a lot
thank you for your good tutorial . can someone tell me please -- on which canon camera possible to do the TRIMMING AND EDITING RIGHT ON THE CAMERA , REAL TIME ON THE SPOT ? no one SHOW it on youtube !!!
I'm about 8 min into this video and already it's one of the greatest things out there. The part where he acts like the guy in the background is slapping him...jeez. I can't stop laughing and I'm supposed to be working. Oh yeah, this camera is great, too. I just got mine for around $170 with a lens, a strap, a cable, battery/charger and an instruction manual in Spanish (which I can't read) and I couldn't be happier. I love this camera..
It does NOT autofocus while filming. You'll have to set up your scene, focus the camera where you want the subject to be, then film. If you move while filming, the focus won't follow. Thanks for the question!! Good Luck.
Great tutorial, I'm considering to buy EOS M mainly for video purpose, but need to be sure whether this thing have manual audio control or not (to control the sound level), can you please confirm? Thank you.
Thanks for the comment!! Just wanted to let you know that I thumbed through your site and absolutely loved the 1956 Chevy Pickup in bright yellow!! What camera did you use to shoot that video?
Stairway To Video Editing for Beginners Thanks for the compliment! That was actually just shot on a Canon SX50 HS bridge camera. It's not the best camera out there for video but for a starter photography camera... it's just about perfect! That truck also belongs to a friend of mine. its quite the beast :) it was on the cover of the last LMC trucks catalog with some of my shots chosen :)
Hey, good video. I want to use my EOS M for live streaming, as well as video, so I want the HDMI signal to run continuously for at least two hours. I've been able to disable the 30 minute recording limit using Magic Lantern, but the LCD screen still shuts down after a maximum of 30 minutes and so does the HDMI out signal. There's no menu option to make it stay on continuously. have you heard of a solution to this problem?
Hi Jim. This was a very informative video! I have this camera and I cannot get the video to focus, especially when I film myself talking. I have the 22mm lens and the option to turn off the image stabilizer is not appearing on my menu. Any suggestions?
Thanks for the question. If you go to the 11:36 minute mark on the video, it talks about how to focus. Even the 22mm lens has that option. The camera will NOT focus automatically when you are using the video function. You have to focus the lens at the point where you will be standing manually, by turning the knurled part of the lens, then get into the scene and film. If you move around, the focus will be lost unless you stay in the same spot. As far as turning off "Image Stabilization," go to the 11:36 mark and check that out. At the 12:00 mark, I show how to shut off the Image Stabilization. I hope that helps. Good Luck!
John, Thanks for the question. I don't know the answer to your question for sure, but I would think that Canon would have left the menu settings similar to the original Canon M camera. Let me know if that's true once you start navigating your menu settings. Jim
Thanks a lot that's was a great video, your explanation is very well, iam happy because I can find how to set up in manual setting in my camera after waching your video (FYI I use Canon eos M3). once more time thankyou From Indonesia 🇮🇩🇮🇩🇮🇩
Larry, The 180 Degree Shutter Rule is at the 5:00 minute mark on the video. Watch it carefully and it explains what it is. It's basically what film makers have figure out as to what makes a good technical video in terms of how our eye sees motion. Thanks for the question!!
thanks so much for your video. I am recording with fluorescent lights, two big ones, while I am actively painting and then I time-lapse the video in post...I have some flickering. Wondering if these settings would still be good for my situation?
Thanks for the question. So first, what country are you in? The reason I ask is that in the USA those fluorescent tubes are flickering at 60Hz while in Europe they are flickering at 50 Hz. Next question for you: How many FPS or Frames Per Second do you have the camera set for. 24fps? Or 30fps?, etc
There are a lot more knowledgeable people out there than myself, concerning time lapse, so I'm attaching the following URL for you to digest. A lot of times flickering can be caused by an "automatic setting" you may have on your camera; Like auto white balance, etc. www.learntimelapse.com/time-lapse-exposure-avoiding-flicker-and-dragging-shutter/
thanks so much for taking the time. By following your directions and the rules for the florescent lighting and the shutter speed, the flickering is gone. Now though I am testing to adjust it so it's a bit more sharp and the white balance is where I want it. It's too blue on the florescent light setting for white balance. I was told to use auto but I see that you are saying it can cause the flickering too, so I will have to test. Thanks again and I will look at the link.
Thanks a lot for this awesome walk through, I just bought my EOS M and new to manual video, my only question is I heard if you record at 24 fps your family stop should be at 1/50 how do you set that up on eos m?
I think what you are referring to is Shutter Speed. So, if you are shooting at 24 frames per second (fps) you'll want to change your shutter speed to around 1/50th of a second. I explain it around the 5:00 minute mark in the video. It's called the 180 Degree Shutter Rule. Thanks for the question and for watching my video!! Jim
+Stairway To Video Editing for Beginners i would love to see a tutorial on this camera on shooting raw with magic lantern, there are tons of video test on RUclips but not even one tutorial about the set up
I just got the Canon EOS M5 to shoot videos but I need to use the remote app. Everytime I press the button, it takes a picture vs a video of me even tho I have the setting in video mode. How can I use my Canon app and record videos on my M5?
Very enjoyable tutorial. Apart from learning how to use the camera properly it was so funny to watch this guy is hilarious we watched it a second time with friends. Was looking for other tutorials to do with this camera as we just bought it but no luck. Thanks.
i want to shoot t 60 frames per second but every time i do it, it crops my videos when i post them on youtube how did you make yours fit the whole screen
I don't know if this will help you or not, but it may be the way you are saving your file in your editing software. Check out this quick information from RUclips: support.google.com/youtube/answer/6375112 I hope this helps.
How many hours of continuous video can I shoot without the EOS M shutting off or dividing up the files. On occasion (not that often), I need to shoot about 2 hours of video.
Hi Jim, is there a special program you use to edit your videos and is there a way to hook the camera straight up to the computer so you do not have to remove the memory card? when I try to view my videos on the computer its slow and distorted. I appreciate any feedback you could give on solving this issue.
thank you very much, i film with a M10 and is a little frustrating i dont know how to use it, im gonna change the setting on the camera to see if it works, do you know how to make the background blurry with the M10?
Glam By Lala To do that you need a certain lens. I recommend a low f stop. So anything under f 2.0. Also make sure to move your subject away from the background. Eg don't stamd against a wall. Step away to get the subject solely in focus. You can get great vintage lenses for under 100. Look for portrait lensess too so 50mm 35mm and upwards. Try to get primes they are sharper. Hope this helps
Hey man, I'm really trying to learn film making and i want to make videos and films.. my question is, does a mic connected to a sound recorder make a better quality sound?? Should I buy a sound recorder for my mic or plug it directly into my eos m? When I record with my 100 dollar mic I can still hear annoying background noises.
Yeah, The EU controversially decided to classify high-end digital cameras as video recorders, which attached a customs duty of 5-12% for digital cameras imported into Europe. Things like this make me understand why Brits want to leave them.

I think the main issue with the EOS M videos are the moires that can also be seen in this video. Any way to get rid of them?

The only way that I know to get rid of "Moire" is to slightly keep your subject out of focus.
